I will let you know when the task is completed. As of today, still no word from the UK about Ghost :( Derek ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. It has been popping up all over the place including here in San Diego (my dealer called me yesterday). So, those of you who are not getting it via me/my brother/the UK Fan Club can get it quite easily and earlier than those of us who are. Needless to say I am not overly happy with this situation. Beryl never clearly stated it would be a general release. It would have been nice if the Fan Club orders were filled before the general release to the public. In future I will extract a clear statement from Beryl or Tony as to whether other NUMA releases are going to be Fan Club only or generally available. Also, I will not take orders or money for other releases until the discs are in Beryl's hands unless they are very limited editions that require pre-ordering. I apologise to all who ordered Ghost through me as it seems I have been holding your money hostage for months. I hope the discs come through soon. At least it seems as though the CDs via me will be cheaper than what one can get in the US or UK (quoted prices range from $30 to $40 and #16 to #18). Here are a few comments from others: >From mikeehli@cie.uoregon.edu Tue Oct 13 15:32:29 1992 From: mikeehli@cie.uoregon.edu (Mike Ehli) Subject: Re: Ghost CD sighting I purchased my copy of Ghost today (10/13/92 in Eugene, Oregon for those interested in such gory details) for $29.95. This is from a decent-sized independent store...they're the only ones in town who do any significant import business, but their prices have always been good in spite of that monopoly. (It also helps to be a regular customer; they put in a standing order for new Numan material for me, and I didn't even ask them to....) Hope this helps. --Mike >From mathew@mantis.co.uk Wed Oct 14 03:44:24 1992 Subject: Re: Ghost CD sighting From: mathew Two shops in Cambridge have it as well. #17.99 in HMV, a bit cheaper in Parrot Records. mathew >From schabtac@stout.atd.ucar.EDU Wed Oct 14 21:06:33 1992 From: schabtac@stout.atd.ucar.EDU (Adam Schabtach) Subject: Re: Ghost CD sighting I found it in a store here (Boulder, CO) for $33--so even after sales tax, it would be cheaper to buy it there, I think. You have now been added to the Gary Numan mailing list. Please send an introduction message to the mailing-list. In this message, please let us know who you are, who some of your favorite artists are, how long you have listened to Gary Numan. Let us know if you play any instruments or anything else that might come to mind. Complete archives and a discography, information can be obtained via anonymous FTP from ftp.uwp.edu (131.210.1.4). If you can't FTP, it is also available via email-request from datta@cs.uwp.edu. Since the spring of 1991 Derek Langford has been distributing a pseudo- monthly electronic newsletter called "Numanews" to interested parties. The purpose of the newsletter was to keep fans of Gary Numan on the net informed of releases, tours etc. but it grew into a central point for discussion of any subject concerning Gary and his music. The newsletter seemed necessary due to the limited availability of some of his albums and the lack of publicity in the USA. With Derek having personal contact with Gary's parents and membership in the UK-resident only Gary Numan Fan Club (run by his mother) he has a prime source of information that he thought he should share. Since the 25th September 1992 Numanews has operated as a moderated mailing list sent out weekly in digest form. To make changes to your address e-mail numan-request@cs.uwp.edu To contribute something, mail your message to: numan@cs.uwp.edu Mail sent to this address will be automatically forwarded to the moderator for approval. If important information (new release, developments at NUMA etc) arises, it will be sent out as a Numanewsflash bypassing the Digest and reaching you as quickly as possible. A description of suitable subjects for the mailing list is given below. CHARTER FOR NUMANEWS - the Gary Numan mailing list --------------------------------------------------- This list is for the purpose of the acquisition and dissemination of info about Gary Numan. Suitable material should have some connection with Gary or his music. This includes info on new releases, concerts, reviews, sightings of Numan collectibles, sale of or requests for Numan items, reports of radio play, interviews, discussion of available releases, critiques of past releases, Numan trivia, other Numan Fan organisations/publications, musical influences, musical influencees, artists with some connection to Gary Numan (collaborators, others on his NUMA label, past backing band members etc): basically anything that can be seen to have relevance to the group. Discussion of other 80's synth artists should be left for other mailing lists/newsgroups if no relation to Gary is an integral part of the contribution. --------------------------------------------------------------------------- Please reply to this message to test the mail path. In your reply, please include your full name (for the member list file). Please reply to numan-request or the sender of this mail, do not send the test message to the list, please DO, however, send an intro message to the list as well. Digest: Each week, all of the messages that were sent to numan@cs.uwp.edu are collected together, sorted by subject line & date, then mailed out to all of the members of the digest list. When you reply to the digest, you mail to numan@cs.uwp.edu. (Please change the subject to match that of the topic you wish to discuss.) The digest goes out in the small hours of Sunday morning. PLEASE NOTE: If your site bounces mail for a period of two weeks, I will automatically suspend your subscription. Not too much to pass on that hasn't been mentioned already here but -according to NME's Indie LPs chart for 19.8.92, _Machine And Soul_ had gone from 22 down to 13. Not bad. -the sample about 8 seconds of silence on the album is from John Cage an innovative artist who had many theories of music that were generally ignored. In the 1950s, he released his "song of silence" which was just that.In the 1980s he continued his avante garde work with artists like Laurie Anderson. He died in Septmeber at age 75. -Too Unlimited who had the hit in the UK with the song "The Magic Friend" with samples from "Aree 'Friend' Electric? now have a domestic release of their album called _Get Ready_ which contains this hit. It is on the Critique Label. -To those here who whish to participate, 20 Ocotber was declared last year to be the official "request Gary Numan Day" to radio stations. The 2nd annual event is upcoming and the more who participate the better. Me! UK shop price seems to be somewhat higher than you'd pay in the fan club, ranging from #17-#18 or so. It's a double CD, first disc's 10 tracks, the second one's 9 (same as the album release?) It's in one of those slimline double CD cases, so it looks to all intents and purposes like a single CD. Next up, there's a new UK music mag out dedicated to "technology in music". Annoyingly enough, I've forgotten the title, but the first issue does feature an interview with Gary, subtitled "How Does He Do It?". How does he do what? Sound the same album after album? I dunno. There's an inset photo of Numan on the cover (top right) so it should be relatively easy to spot. Third up, a new Numan compilation CD. It's on the Document label and is called _Gary Numan_. Well, strictly speaking it's _Document Series Presents Gary Numan_. 15 tracks from the 1978-1983 period, encompassing singles, album tracks and B-sides. Sorry, can't rememember much about the track listing other than that it included "The Tick-Tock Man". Looks as cheap as its low budget price suggests from the outside, but the booklet (which I sneaked a look at) is rather nice - it's skimpy but has a neat montage of tour passes, clippings etc (anyone familiar with the booklet on The Icicle Work's "Numb" will know the sort of thing I mean) plus a brief biography. The Numan comp seems something of an odd-one out, the other discs in this series I saw were by The Edgar Broughton Band and The Groundhogs :-) Al -- Al Crawford - awrc@dcs.ed.ac.uk Department Of Computer Science, The University of Edinburgh Rm 1410, JCMB, Kings Buildings, Mayfield Rd, EDINBURGH, EH9 3JZ, Scotland Tel: +44 (0) 31 650 5165 Fax: +44 (0) 31 667 7209 ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 16 Oct 92 10:53:27 PDT From: dlangs%sunstroke@sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Singles (from I, Assassin and Warriors) To: numanews@cs.uwp.edu >From bhammond@zephyr.cair.du.edu Mon Oct 12 12:33:19 1992 From: "BRIAN D. HAMMOND" Subject: Singles I'll try to tackle the question about the singles We Take Mystery [To Bed], Music For Chameleons, Sister Surprise, Warriors..... First to the I, Assassin singles: White Boys And Heroes--If you want all the versions of this on CD, you're going to have to wait still. There is the single (i.e. edited version) on the Exhibition CDs. The Asylum 2 disc has the album/12" single version on it. Still missing, however, is the USA 12" DJ promo version which runs for over 8 minutes. Music For Chameleons--The edited (single) version can be found on the Exhibition CDs, the Selection CD, and the Collection CD. The album version can be found on the appropriate Asylum 2 CD and the BB double album CD of Telekon/I, Assassin. Still yet to be blessed by the wonders of digital audio, however, is the 12" single (extended version) which runs for about 40 seconds longer. Until this finally appears on CD, I'd hold onto the vinyl as this version sports a nice keyboard part that accounts for most of those 40 seconds. We Take Mystery [To Bed]--The edited (single) version appears on Exhibition CDs and the LP version on the BB double album CD of Telekon/I, Assassin. Asylum 2 has the 12" extended version only. As far as I know, if you have the above three CDs, then you have all the versions of this song on CD. Sister Surpise--This single is curious. The 12" single version which starts out and sounds different from the LP verion is described on the vinyl as the (extended version) yet it only runs for about 5:30 whereas the LP verion with the long beginning runs for 8:30. In anycase, the shorter 12" single version can be found on the Exhibition CDs. The longer LP version can be found on both the Asylum 2 disc and the BB double album CD of The Pleasure Principle/Warriors. I beleive this song in all it's versions is thus captured on digital audio. Warriors--The single (edit) version appears on the Exhibition CDs. The longer LP version which is identical to the 12" single version appears on the Asylum 2 disc and the BB double album CD of The Pleasure Principle/ Warriors. Again, this song is covered completely by CD technology. Me! I Disconnect From You ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 17 Oct 92 21:58:53 PDT From: dlangs%sunstroke@sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Three Gary Numan CDs released this week? To: numanews@cs.uwp.edu Alot of us have seen Ghost in stores in the UK and USA now. I inspected a copy locally myself and found the slim 2 CD jewel case rather nifty though it was a tad difficult to get the discs off the spindles. I'm sure I'll get the hang of it when my copy arrives in the mail. Al Crawford has already mentioned the "Document Series presents Gary Numan", apparently a 15 track compilation of singles, b-sides and album tracks from the 1978-83 BB years. Sounds like a redundant release after Asylum. The third possibility is what I have seen referred to as "The Other Side of Gary Numan". My dealer had a copy but before I knew about it another keen fan had snapped it up. All I know is that it has apparently has 14 tracks, is on Receiver Records and is a b-sides compilation. Now, what might this be? I would guess it is a compilation of the BB b-sides i.e. not worth it if you already have Asylum 1 and 2 or you are a completist. My only knowledge of Receiver Records is an X-Ray Spex CD which sounded bloody awful (an early live performance which must have been recorded on a Walkman or something). I doubt if it is what we would want most of all - a collection of the pre-IRS NUMA b-sides. Any information would be appreciated but I will probably be able to tell you myself by the middle of next week.
