I have no idea what language Connie Filapello is speaking on Boys Like Me, but it sounds a little bit like Italian to me. Welcome to Numannews Mr. Johnson. Telekon was my first Numan album too and remains my favourite overall. Me! She was the press agent for the band Japan. According to an old "Smash Hits" (UK mag.) clipping about this very same topic, she is saying, "I am hassled too, I have my own problems, etc etc." In This Wreckage, the Japanese at the end is transcribed "wakareyoo." It means "I will leave." Notice that Gary adds a (stylistic?) extra syllable at the beginning of the word when he sings it. --Kay Teel teelk@elmer1.bobst.nyu.edu AND FINALLY FROM OUR RESIDENT JAPANESE SPEAKER: >From kurisuto@chopin.udel.edu Sun Jan 10 07:34:24 1993 Date: Sun, 10 Jan 1993 10:16:17 -0500 (EST) From: "Sean J. Crist" Subject: Japanese word in This Wreckage I know the answer to that one. Actually, it was that word that turned me on to studying Japanese; I studied it for three years and then lived in Japan for a year, where I sent back CD's for some of you. Life works in strange ways, especially where Gary Numan's music is involved. Gary doesn't quite pronounce the word right; it should be pronounced /wakareo/, not /wuakaleu/ as he pronounces it (Japanese doesn't distinguish r from l, so /wakaleo/ is ok as a translitaration as well). The first of the four symbols is a Chinese character which means 'separate'; the verb /wakareru/ means 'to separate', and the other three symbols are the grammatical ending giving the meaning 'let's separate' (this is male speakers' Japanese; a woman would have said /wakaremasho/). The best translation of the phrase is probably 'farewell (forever)', said when you don't expect to ever see the listener again. Now, a question for you all: what do you think This Wreckage is about? I have some ideas, but the lyrics, as usual, are a bit cryptic. This song is one of Gary's best, IMO. \/ __ __ _\_ Kurisuto (Sean Crist) --- | | \ / Department of Linguistics _| ,| ,| ----- University of Delaware _| ,| ,| [_] kurisuto@chopin.udel.edu | | | [_] Discl: I speak for myself. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 14 Jan 93 21:12:10 PST From: dlangs%sunstroke@sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: correction and some trivia To: numanews@cs.uwp.edu >From awrc@dcs.edinburgh.ac.uk Mon Jan 11 06:04:28 1993 Date: Mon, 11 Jan 93 14:00:22 GMT From: Al Crawford > From bhammond@zephyr.cair.du.edu Tue Dec 29 17:48:49 1992 > Date: Tue, 29 Dec 1992 18:47:20 -0700 > From: "BRIAN D. Blancmange did the big firework in 1986 or thereabouts - "One Day, One Time" is in fact the first solo single by Neil Arthur, ex-Blancmange lead singer. OK, I suppose it's about time I supplied something genuinely *new* for the list, so it's time for a bit of Numan trivia. I hope I haven't mentioned it before. Here in the UK we get a rather good topical/humourous news quiz on BBC2 called "Have I Got News For You". Two regular team captains (Paul Merton and Ian Hislop) are each joined by a special guest (ranging from comedians through newspaper editors through Chairmen of the Conservative Party) and answer questions on the news events of the previous week, or just on news in general. It's the sort of thing that, alas, will never be able to make the jump to US TV in the same manner as "Whose Line Is It Anyway" has because it's too UK-specific and some of the things they say would result in the network screening it being sued out of existence within a week. One of their rounds each week is an "Odd One Out" round in which each team member is shown four photographs, one of which is the odd one out. Odd things have been happening though - twice within the last three weeks of the show's run, one G. Numan Esq has appeared as one of the four photos they've got to choose from. There've been a few jokes at Numan's expense (Ian Hislop: "That Numan one's the odd one out because I've never heard of him." and "Gary Numan? Who's he?") but Gary's not been the odd-one out on either occasion. In the first case, Numan ("he's the leader of a popular beat-combo" says host Angus Deayton) was one of the three non-odd ones because they all owned planes, in the second case Numan was non-odd (even?) because he was one of the three who own guns. Yeah, I know, it's not very interesting, but it's a bit weird seeing Gary's face popping up on a news quiz. I'm Charles Savoie, and I'm mostly into info and nostalgia on Gary's early stuff, like pre-1983. I also enjoy programming, playing old crusty synthesizers (Juno-106, Poly-61, MS-20), and music from the likes of Ministry, Skinny Puppy, The Sisters of Mercy, Kraftwerk, The B-52's, Front 242, Severed Heads, Ultravox, and Depeche Mode (yes, I admit it) to name a few... I'm *desperately* looking for any video footage of Gary from '78-'84, especially concert videos and the like. Does anyone have anything to share on how I could possibly obtain videos of this stuff (NTSC, VHS) through mail order or other means? I'm also interested in the Asylum CD set, and old rarer stuff from Gary. How could I order or find this? Thanks for any info. My music is a blending of all of those groups and I go undr the name "Legion Of Decency". But when asked my favourite artist or biggest influence, it's Numan! I like the early stuff as well as the later stuff. I'm dying to get "Berserker" on cd. I have Asylum 1 and 2 but not 3. I DO have the original box set of "Living Ornaments" and I'm happy about that! actually I have almost everything on either Vynal or cd. I'm just saving up to finish off my colletion. I haven't got the new album yet, but I do have both Machine and Soul singles. i can be reached on GEnie as King1 (Legion). My computer is an Atari Mega 4.
