BUT IF I GREW UP WHERE PEOPLE WHERE KILLING EACH OTHER IN THE NAME OF THE SAME GOD, I GUESS I'D BE A LITTLE UPSET TOO. I DISAGREE WITH YOU ON YOUR RATING OF 'MY DYING MACHINE', THOUGH IT WAS A LITTLE WEAK ON 'BERSERKER', THE REMIX ON THE DOMESTIC REALSE OF 'NEW ANGER' ALBUM WAS ALMOST AS GOOD AS THE REMIX OF 'CHANGE YOUR MIND'! AND JUST WHEN YOU THINK HE HAS GOTTEN AWAY FROM THE SYNTH HE DOES A GREAT INSTURMENTAL ON 'MACHINE AND SOUL'! JIMI I DREAM OF WIRES....... (Jimi, do you mean one of the intrumental's on the M + S singles as there are none on the album - Derek) ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 2 Apr 93 21:33:53 PST From: dlangs%sunstroke@sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Album ratings - Charles Savoie To: numanews@cs.uwp.edu >From chuckies@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca Sun Mar 28 11:00:16 1993 From: chuckies@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (Charles J Savoie) Date: Sun, 28 Mar 93 14:00:04 EST > So I got to thinking how would I rank Gary's studio albums. Here is my > first stab. Here are my picks: Album: Fave track: 1. Replicas Are 'Friends' Electric? 2. Tubeway Army My Love is a Liquid 3. The Pleasure Principle Films 4. Telekon Telekon [bows head in shame] -----love/like border-------- 5. Dance Crash 6. I, Assassin We Take Mystery to Bed 7. Warriors Warriors 8. [All the rest!] The favourite tracks for the first four albums I just picked sort of tongue-in-cheek, since I thoroughly enjoy almost every song on these albums. But to be fair, I haven't any other albums of Gary's. I'm too afraid to buy them given the serious decline from Telekon to Warriors. Also to be noted: the version of "Everyday I Die" from Living Ornaments is perhaps my favourite of Gary's songs. You're sure to get a bunch of replies to this one! Here's my ranking, but a few caveats: (a) a lot of the ranks could shift easily. This ranking is the "most usual" one for me. (b) as Derek pointed out, a couple of stunning songs will go far in saving an album. I've tried, however, to base my rankings on how I feel about the whole album. Here goes: 1. Replicas 2. The Pleasure Principle 3. Telekon 4. Tubeway Army 5. Dance 6. Metal Rhythm 7. Berserker 8. I, Assassin 9. Warriors 10. The Plan 11. The Fury 12. Strange Charm 13. Outland 14. This album was not put out by the same group that recorded "Just Can't Get Enough". It's even quite different from "Black Celebration". And even though I LOVE "BC", I'm glad that they haven't made that album again. Whereas Vince Clarke has made the same album again and again..... I like Vinny Clarke's stuff, but I like Depeche's more. Rather than wishing that Gary would make "Replicas" again, we should be glad that he is TRYING to do something different. One of the problems is that he is stuck on the same lyrical theme, and that he uses those damn female vocal samples TOO MUCH! I really believe that he can make GREAT albums still, but he's only making great songs on mediocre albums. Plus he seems to be trying to hard to be accepted by the radio-public. What made him so popular in the first place was his individualality. He should trust himself more to express HIMSELF again, and see what might follow. Not to be picky, but that movie "Point of Interest" was made in '92. I nearly fell off of my couch when I flipped on to HBO right in the middle of "New Anger". I just hadn't gotten around to posting it yet. That's 2 whole songs from "New Anger/Metal Rythum" that have made it onto movies! I can't wait for "Berserker"!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Adios Ameobas !
