There seems to be a lot of people out there who haven't really liked a Numan album in eight years. Now let me go out on a limb here and risk offending everyone on the mailing list. Have you really liked any albums by anyone in the last eight years? I have no idea what the ages of people around here are, but it seems to me that somewhere between the ages of 18 and 22 most people seem to get their taste in music stuck on what ever was in style when they were that age. Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to be insulting. I'm just suggesting that you conisder your own receptiveness to new music when you evaluate it. Is your music collection full of 8-10 year old recordings, or by at least by artists who have been around that long? The occasional mention of John Foxx/Ultravox, Depeche Mode or Kate Bush makes me think that is the case with many of us. (BTW those are three artists I like a lot too.) In trivia news, the grammy award winning Eric Clapton album _Unplugged_ features Tessa Niles on back up vocals. Keep an eye out for MTV to repeat the TV show if you want to see what she looks like. More trivia: recently while driving down Barbur Blvd in Portland Oregon I found myself following a black pick-up truck with hand applied letters accross the back bumper reading "G A R Y N U M A N." Anyone we know? What was five letter word at the top center? I had to turn left before I could read it. Whilst browsing my local independent music store this weekend, bemoaning the fact that while there were lots of CDs I wanted to buy I didn't have anything to buy them *with* the guy in the store (who's familiar with my musical (lack of) taste) spoiled my day completely by telling me that there were some John Foxx CDs scheduled for release "within the month". It's a fair assumption, given that they were promised by Virgin some time ago, that these are the long-awaited CD reissues of the first three John Foxx albums _Metamatic_, _The Garden_ and _The Golden Section_. At the moment, that's all the info I have but Foxxfans can rest assured that I'll pass on any other info I might find out and (of course) purchase and review the discs when they're released. I'm hoping (praying?) that Virgin will have taken advantage of the switch of medium to pad the discs out to 70 minutes or so with B-sides, non-album tracks etc. I'll leave the usual spiel on why John Foxx CDs might be of interest to Numanoids to Derek. I am sure Al will give us full reviews as sson as he gets them which will likely be the release date. For those of you new to the Digest and unfamiliar with the Foxx, he came onto the scene as a solo artist after he left Ultravox at about the same time as Gary. Although not achieving the same success as Gary his music, especially from his first album Metamatic, has been very influential in synth music of the 80s and 90s. So far we have only had his fourth album "In Mysterious Ways" (now deleted) and the recent compilation "Assembly" on CD. The first three and hopefully a reissue of the fourth with extra tracks will be most welcome to a lot of people I'm sure. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 13 Apr 93 16:02:28 PDT From: dlangs%sunstroke@sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Machine&Soul To: numanews@cs.uwp.edu >From tinytina@wam.umd.edu Sun Apr 11 17:26:13 1993 Date: Sun, 11 Apr 1993 20:25:40 -0400 From: Tina Marie LeMarier Subject: Machine&Soul I got M&S last week and have so far enjoyed it. I especially like "Skin Game". I kind of even like the "Janet Jackson" stuff. "I Wonder" is done very well and I could even hear a song like that being played in the U.S. Overall I like the production but would like to hear fewer screaming women. I think that as a whole the album "works", even if we'd like it to sound differently. The engineering is much better than "Outland" and has more bass to it. I was struck by the total reliance on keys and guitar, and not a sax in sight! Call me ever the optimist, but I really think that he's going to make an album that equals "The Fury"(which I happen to LOVE!). He just seems...torn between styles, and goals. (?) He just needs me as a collaberator! Shane King ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
