To: numan@cs.uwp.edu now, with the musical portion of berserker in hand, i ask my next question, which always makes my numan listening experience more complete: are there any lyrics for the songs on 'berserker' available? i don't find them in the ftp.uwp.edu numan archive, so i fear there may not be... but i can't understand quite everything that gets said. does some numanoid out there have access to these? thanks! greatly enjoying the 'berserker' mix of 'my dying machine' (whatever made them remix it for 'new anger'??), -gts/uwiz (Greg Samson, punkboy@u.washington.edu) ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 4 Sep 93 23:13:38 PDT From: dlangs%sunstroke@sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Cars EP/new compilation/Vicious/UK CDs To: numan@cs.uwp.edu New Cars EP ----------- The new Cars EP released last week in the UK has most of the previously released versions (album, Motorway and 'E' Reg Model) plus some newly mixed ones on it for a total of 7 mixes. It comes in a digipak but it looks quite slick and is amusingly annotated. I saw copies here in San Diego at Tower for $8.99 but the checkout line was too long for me to wait in. With luck Al Crawford may have a review in this very Digest. New Compilation --------------- I have been getting confusing comments about the new compilation which is due 13th September in the UK. It seems to be titled "Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983" Word from a non-net fan, John, stated that that it is a 30+ song 2 CD set of alternative versions of BB era material. Another source said it contained at least two new versions of old songs. We shall find out soon. Gary mentioned releasing alternative versions in one of last years UK Fan Club newsletters. Some new/old Gary - what most people want I would imagine. Something too similar to "Exhibition" would seem redundant unless it was a pure singles album on one CD for the greatest hits collectors. Many releases in the UK have been very similar to others of late e.g Greatest Hits of The Police, The Jam, and compilations of Howard Jones and China Crisis have all come out with there having been an almost equivalent album already available. Perhaps this will be another one. "Vicious" rumours ----------------- Also, John told me that word on Gary's new material for the Vicious album sounds like a throwback to The Pleasure Principle. Material can be heard on the UK access-only Numan Music phone line. Added to other rumours that it sounds like Dance/I, Assassin era work we can either expect an unexpected return to sounds of old or believe that these rumours are way off base if he is continuing with his current trajectory. With luck it will be released before Gary's Oct/Nov tour UK catalogue culled ------------------- Beggars Banquet have deleted Gary's two albums on 1 CDs in the UK. As the Asylum sets are also deleted if you haven't got them yet I would hurry up and do so before Gary's album CDs are gone forever. I have seen many copies of these UK discs at local Tower Records stores. Remember the Telekon/I, Assassin CD is the only place you can find the original vinyl/cassette version of We Take Mystery (to Bed) i.e. the 6.12 version as opposed to the extended mix or single edit. I will try to call Beryl Webb next week to get updated info on NUMA releases. Bye for now, Derek Derek H. I've corrected a few errors I saw and added the things in my collection that weren't on the original list. Anyone else want to fill in the records that are still missing from this? "Tubeway Army: Featuring Gary Numan (first albumn)" The Tubeway Army obviously could not afford expensive synthesers yet, so this one use more traditional insturments. Very New Wave and not yet refined. "Replicas" (1979) Still very New Wave, but with a bigger budget. Obviously very scifi influenced. "The Pleasure Priciple" (1979) His big US release (Cars was a #1 hit for a bit). More of his >Numan/Machine style of music. "Living Ornaments" (1980: Live Double Albumn) These are live versions of his early Numan/Machine style of music. "Telekon" (1980) This albumn had a little more emotion that his previous music and contained some of his best songs. "Dance" (1981) Critics got on his case about being all synthesiser oriented (back then it was a bad thing I guess) so he started using more traditional instruments for this slow albumn. Not a lot of energy but more complex than previous music. "I, Assassin" (1982) Continuing on with experiments with traditional instruments, this one uses >a lot of bass. Music for Chameleons was an excellent song. "Berserker" (1985) Now he has gone through another change in style. Abandoning the slow music with more traditional instuments, he is back to synthisiser music again. He as added backup vocals to augment his rather monotonal singing style. This started the trend to which his music has followed since. Quite a bit more pop than before. It should be noted that at this point Gary Numan decided that he would look a whole lot better if he was paper-white with blue hair, blue lips and blue eyeliner. Looks a lot cooler that it sounds. This seemed to last a few years before he (apparently) got sick of it. "Change Your Mind" (1985: 45 LP) You will probably have a hard time finding this, which is too bad. I really wish these two made an actual albumn together because this song is one of my favorites. It was a Polydor records promotional realease. The DJ that gave it to me informed me that Polydor said no albumn would be forthcoming. "The Fury" (1985) More in the trend of 'Berserker'. The lyrics seems to be tending more toward his problems with fame and such than the earlier scifi influences. Much more complex than his earlier music. "Tubeway Army: 1978/1979" (1985: collection of unreleased songs) These were songs that were considered for 'The Pleasure Principle' and 'Telekon' but didn't make it. Albums was clear blue for some unknown reason. There were at least three other LP 45's like this with various unreleased Numan songs but I failed to buy them when I had the chance. "White Noise" (1985: Live Double Albumn) This is a live concert where he plays some of his older music as well as some of his newer songs. "Gary Numan: The Collection" This is mostly his older Numan/Machine style here. Apparently this was from a series of collections of innovative musicians. I was very unhappy with it as something was done wrong when it was mastered and the songs all sounded very tinny compared to actual releases. "The Skin Game" (1989: Live Convert) Gary Numan's first US release in quite a while. These songs are found on older albumns, but many of them had only been on imports before. "New Anger" (1989) He followed 'The Skin Game' with an albumn of new songs. He seems to be building up more energy and emotion. The songs are faster paced and the vocals a bit angry. "Outland" (1991) This is his newest US release (that I am aware of). In this he has discovered digital sampling but uses it very tastefully (taking from 'Blade Runner', 'The Terminator' and 'Predator' Can you see the pattern?) There is actaully a political song on this tape 'Russia Infected' that talks about western influence in what was then the USSR. I'd recommend getting this for a taste of his newer style music as it's his most complex to date. "Isolate" (1992: taken from Berserker, The Fury and Strange Charm) This was a teaser record. They took songs from three other albumns and made one full albumn (going as far as to place pictures of the other three on the back). "Machine and Soul" (1992) I picked this up in England on a bussiness trip. It is not as complex as 'Outland' and follows more in the tradition of 'Berserker' and 'The Fury'. His rendition of 'U Got the Look' is not as good as Prince, and I do not even like Prince. The rest of the albumn is much better. "Strange Charm" (198?) I have a copied tape of this albumn (I'd buy it if I could find it) and have no liner notes for it. The following is an update/addition list to the above: "Living Ornaments" was first released as a 2 LP boxed set with an insert listing the dates of the tours (Pleasure Principle and Telekon) and a seperate order form for purchasing tour merchandise. "Strange Charm" - Numa Records I005 (C)1986 Track Listing: My Breathing, The Sleeproom, New Thing From London Town, I Can't Stop, Strange Charm, The Need, This Is Love "New Thing From London Town"/"Time To Die" 12" Picture Disc (C)1986 I believe that "The Skin Game" as listed above should actually be called "The Skin Mechanic". At least that is what my copy is called. "Numan Tubeway Army Vol.I" 12" ep on yellow vinyl. Tracks are: That's Too Bad, Oh, Didn't I Say, Do You Need The Service, Bombers, O.D.Receiver, Blue Eyes "Numan Tubeway Army Vol.II" 12" ep on red vinyl. Tracks are: Fadeout 1930, The Crazies, Only A Downstat, We Have A Technical "Numan Tubeway Army Vol.III" 12" ep on blue vinyl. Tracks are: The Monday Troop, Crime Of Passion, The Life Machine, A Game Called Echo, Random, Oceans The three volumes were also released together on a cassette. "Metal Rhythm" (C)1988 Illegal Records Tracks are: This Is Emotion, Hunger, New Anger, Devious, America, Voix, Respect, Young Heart, Cold Metal Rhythm, Don't Call My Name. The cover of this album is similar (if not the same) as "New Anger". I don't have a copy of New Anger, but from what I've seen in stores, it's the same photo. Are the tracks the same, and if so why the 2 different titles? "Ghost" Yet another live album, (really a double album) this one from the 1987 tour. HAMMOND) Subject: I Was Afraid Of This To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I have to strongly disagree with Richard's interpretation of my comments in last week's digest. I was simply implying that with Jim not letting anyone know why the Fanzine had stopped suddenlly, I couldn't in good conscience suggest anyone join the club. I felt an extra element of responsibility in this matter since, as many of you know, I have been a strong advocate of the NAGNFC for a long time on this base. I too feel that the effort and overall work Jim puts into the club is remarkable and commenadable. I was never implying that Jim is out to take adavantage of members, simply that until I knew what was going on, joining it wouldn't be wise becasue anything could have happened. Paul Mayer mentioned that he was told once that the tinkling sound which starts and finishes off the excellent B-side song _She Cries_ was actually recorded during the Dance sessions in 1981. This was new to us both and I was wondering if anyone here might know if this is true or not. Me! This time it's a pulsating rave-style remix. It's actually not as bad as that description makes it sound. They were playing it in several of the record shops in Cambridge on Saturday... mathew ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
