If you want to hear the song in many of it's reincarnations this CD is for you. We have 7 mixes altogether: the original, 'E' Reg Model, Motorway Mix and 4 others including the '93 sprint mix that will be on the new "The Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983" compilation which hits stores in the UK Tuesday. The new mixes are not as awful as they could have been considering that they all have added a 90s feel, and most noticably on 3 of the remixes the predictable and overexposed 90s dance style. Still, as remixes go they are relatively subtle and do not destroy the original song. I wouldn't say I like them but they are not completely dismissable. In all you have over 32 minutes of "Cars' in various forms. I still like the Zues B. Held mixes from 1987. The new mixes do not improve the songs the way those did. The only mix of Cars that is missing from this CD EP is the 'E' Reg extended model which can be found with it's the Motorway Mix and regular 'E' Reg 7" mix on the Warriors disc of Asylum vol 2. The 7" 'E' Reg Model mix is also to be found on Asylum. I am hoping Al Crawford may get a full review to the Digest as he is a far better reviewer than I and is more up to date on the 90s scene. It has seemingly peeked at number 57 in the UK charts so it may disappear shortly or copies may get dumped in the US due to it being Gary's only chart success in the USA. Derek Derek H. This new compilation is a 2 CD set with a rumoured 30+ tracks. Now, the big question will be "how will it differ from "Exhibition"? I have heard from one source that it contains at least two new versions and also from a second source that it is mostly new or alternate versions. Hopefully the mystery will be solved next week. I'll pass on the details as I get them. It does contain the '93 Sprint mix from the Cars EP. I hope it is not a completely redundant release and contains extended mixes of the I, Assassin and Warriors singles at least. Machine and Soul extended mixes ------------------------------- is apparently going to be widely available. Two east coast sources have said their loical importer expects to get it in stock soon. This release, originally going to be UK Fan Club only, contains all the M+S songs in extended form (yet another remix of Emotion? :( ) except for U Got the Look plus the b-sides from the CD singles for the album. Because of the expected general availability I will not be acquiring it directly from the Fan club for those interested as I originally expected to do. Vicious ------- No news about Gary's new studio album. I failed to contact Beryl Webb this week but will try again next week to firm up details. Derek Derek H. At my last enquiry it was about 95K in size. It can be obtained via ftp or by a kindly worded request to Dave Datta (datta@cs.uwp.edu). I don't think there is any need to post extensive, yet incomplete, discographies to the Digest when this resource is available. Comments and opinions about each album are welcomed though. Just thought I'd mention this even though I no longer moderate the Digest. I hate to see people waste time and bandwidth on things that have already been done and are available to all who want the info. Derek Derek H. Bradley was correcting and adding items to a discography which he said had been posted some months ago. In fact, I cross-posted that very incomplete list from alt.cyberpunk earlier this summer for the sole purpose of our reading enjoyment of the comments found in it. It was certainly in no way meant as a discography. Anyone wanting to add items to a Numan discography are quite welcome to do so, but they should work from the file compiled by Dave Data, available via ftp from . I won't post it here, as it is almost 110kbytes long. If you can't get it via ftp, ask and I'll e-mail it to you. However, this site is a goldmine of musical data, so everyone with the ability should ftp to it. >This list was posted to the list a few months ago. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu regarding the very informative list of numan releases, i would just like to make one comment/question: "gary numan: the collection". i bought a two cd set titled "Exhibition", with older songs that were left off the beggars banquet combination of two numan albums to one cd. (tubeway army/dance; replicas/the plan; pleasure principle/warriors; telekon/i,assasin).. well, that's not exclusively what was on exhibition, there are some doubles. but thats what abounds in the us, anyway. b.sorter ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 8 Sep 93 17:22:57 PDT From: metlay@netcom.com (metlay) Subject: Hard to Find GN CDs for sale To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Numanews Mailing List) Anyone who wants a copy of the Receiver Records CD THE OTHER SIDE OF GARY NUMAN or an original copy of the Numa CD of STRANGE CHARM (yes, I found a SECOND copy, if you can believe it! HAMMOND) Subject: Interesting Possibility To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I just read an interesting article in the latest issue of _Goldmine_ which holds some hope for us Numanoids. As we are all aware, many of the John Peel recordings have been slowly appearing on vinyl and CD on the Strange Fruit label. Now, it looks like another label, Windsong, has been given the rights to release all the live recordings done for BBC1. This includes live material done for the "In Concert" series, the "Transcription" series, and for the TV show, "The Old Grey Whistle Test." To the best of my knowledge, Numan has played live in all three cases. He had his famous appearance on OGWT back in 1978. In 1980 he played live for the "In Concert" series (this concert has been widely bootlegged on the LP called "Transcript" which features a horrible "review" on the back of the sleeve). In 1983, Numan played live for the "Transcription" series. This last one is the hardest one to find and would be, to the best of my knowledge, the only non-bootlegged live recordings from the "Warriors" tour. The woman who is in charge of these releases said she is highly influenced by fan mail and listens seriously to the concerns of fans in deciding which artist to release next. Sadly, however, there was no address with the article. Perhaps one of the UK members of this list might know what it is? Me! HAMMOND) Subject: New Cars Single To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I finally got my copy of the new Cars single yesterday on CD. I'll defer making any in-depth reviews of it to those who are much better at it than I. For now I'll just give the track listings and my overall impressions. 1 Cars '93 Sprint -- this version is pretty good. A tastefully done update of the song. More danceable than the original. 2 Cars Multivalve -- this version has an incessant house beat in it that at first amused and later annoyed me a little. Ok not great. 3 Cars "Classic" -- the original 1979 version. 4 Cars Endurance -- the longest track. Not too bad, although the beginning was pretty odd. Nothing too write home about though. 5 Cars To Gear -- an instrumental version which bores either becasue it is borring or because by now you've had to listen to five mixes of the same song. Had some nice touches. 6 Cars Motorway -- Samer version from the 1987 Cars 12" and Asylum 2 disc 4. 7 Cars E Reg -- Same version from 1987. Good remix but redundant. Cars '93 Sprint is going to appear on the Best Of Gary Numan 1978-1983 comp CD set due out next week. The packaging was very slick and clever although I wish it had been in a jewel case instead of one of those "enviromentally correct" cardboard sleeves. The single is also available on 7" poster sleeve; 7" shape disc, and 12" single. Does anyone know if there are 12" picture disc or casingles as well? Me! I could be full of it, but this is a good excuse to tell people about the comics, which are fun. -- mike metlay * atomic city * box 81175 pgh pa 15217-0675 * metlay@netcom.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- "Wow, now my hand's all sticky!
