The Ultravox fanzine had nothing to do with the first live Ultravox on Windsong, but they're currently pressing to have a second one released :-) Al -- Al Crawford - awrc@dcs.ed.ac.uk Department Of Computer Science, The University of Edinburgh Rm 1410, JCMB, Kings Buildings, Mayfield Rd, EDINBURGH, EH9 3JZ, Scotland Tel: +44 (0) 31 650 5165 Fax: +44 (0) 31 667 7209 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1993 21:57:57 -0500 From: David Datta Subject: Lyrics To: numan Okay, I got several mails about this... The case lists all the songs from the original Machine And Soul album plus most of the B-side songs of that time as well. The actual CD, however, when cued up, only contains the original 9 songs and none of the B-sides. So, be prepared to be disapointed. He did say all the songs were remixes except for U Got The Look. He hadn't listened to it enough times yet to form an opinion though. Me! The Gary Numan North American Fan Club. I sent a letter there that was returned. I recently read here that the club has started back up. I would be very enthusiastic about joining it, can anyone send me info? 2. Ordering information what is the best way to go about ordering Gary Numan CD's and tapes (and albumns, even...)? I am interested in getting titles that I don't have. (I am particularly interested in getting a copy of 'Automatic' as well as a copy of 'The Other Side...') 3. Gary on Video I have URGH: A Music War with 'Down in the Park' live. I am trying to order 'Berserker' VHS through a video retailer near me. Can anyone point me in the direction of other Numan video stuff? 4. Lyrics on FTP I would be more than happy to contribute to the lyrics if someone would tell me how to do it. 5. Yen How does this group sound? I know that they seem to be very involved with Numan and I'd look into getting their stuff if it was similar to Numan's sound in any of Gary's various stages. I'm looking into going as the Blue/White 'Berserker' Gary Numan at an upcoming Halloween party. My hair is a bit too short for it, but if it grows long enough to be able to hold a color I will probably go for it. Where I am going to find blue lipstick, I don't know... Cars (E Reg) 3.35 I'm astonished - a dance remix of an early 80s hit (well, late 70s if you want to be strictly accurate) that doesn't suck! This well-filled CD single contains no fewer than seven versions of Numan's classic "Cars" - the original, two remixes by Zeus B. Held that originally appeared back in 1987 and a further four new remixes by Charles Pierre and Francis Usmar of Native Soul. As seems to be the norm these days, the reason for the appearance of the remixed single is the imminent arrival of a new compilation. "Cars" is taken from _The Best Of Gary Numan 1978-1983_, a double CD that's due out in the UK on the 13th September. Only one of these mixes will appear on that disc however - the "'93 Sprint" mix. This mix adds quite a lot to the original track but, unlike so many dance mixes, *doesn't* remove an equal large chunk of the original. The end result is a rather good track that's easily identifiable as a version of "Cars" (Numan's vocal survives intact) yet features a contemporary beat and is liberally splashed with various electronic bleeps and burbles. Very nicely done indeed and one of the least offensive dance remixes I've heard in a long time. The "Multivalve" mix takes the remixing process a little further - the speed of the track is slowed considerably (half speed?) and most of the original instrumentation (as well as the tune) disappears, resulting in a slow, trancy dance track. Ordinarily, meting out this sort of treatment to a track would have me foaming at the mouth but, for some perverse reason, it works this time. I think it all boils down to the clever use of Numan's original vocal track which has been cut up and inserted in such a way as to neatly fit the slower tempo of the remix. Of course, no "Cars" CD single would be complete without the original version, and that's what comes next. No need to comment on this, it's still the classic Numan track it always was and somehow its presence amongst all these remixes seems to have rejuvenated it - it's just not as dated sounding as it used to be. The "Endurance" mix is rather less endearing than either of the remixes that have appeared so far. It's essentially similar to the "'93 Sprint" mix but now has a *long* and rather annoying intro which adds little to the track. The final new mix is the "Top Gear" mix - a longer, instrumental version of the "'93 Sprint' mix. The single is rounded off by the two Zeus B. Held mixes originally released to accompany the _Exhibition_ compilation back in 1987. Dating as they do from a time when remixes were generally subtler and *didn't* rely largely on adding a trendy beat and/or replacing large chunks of the track with the fruits of a big-name producers ego, the changes here are relatively minor by modern standards. There's a car noise added here and there, and some deft juggling of the vocals but all of this is done within the framework and feel of the original song rather than by using the original track as musical tinsel to decorate an otherwise anonymous dance track. Numan fans will probably find most of the mixes here quite palatable and the disc also provides a cheaper source of those 1987 mixes than anything else currently available. Recommended.
