I have the vinyl LP that the Numan/Sharpe song "Change Your Mind" is on. If you ever see this thing for sale, don't bother. I consider it to be one the worst albums I have ever purchased. Performances by Pino Paladino and Tessa Niles aren't enough to make up for Sharpe's lobotomized EZ listening/soul style. Gary apears on only the one track -- buy the single. It will spare you the horrific slaughtering of Bryan Ferry's "Remix/Remake/Remodel." To say the least, the LP did not whet my appetite for hearing Shakatak. ----------------------------------------------------------- Gregor Torrence greg@image.com (Attention Internet users: do not use your mailer's reply. Just like Paul's copy, my copy lists Dark Mountain, The Hauntings, In A Glasshouse, and Hanoi on both the case and the CD itself, but instead there are only the original 9 tracks. All are extended except U Got The Look. I haven't listened to the CD enough times to have a truly informed opinion, but after two listens, I'd say that Cry, I Wonder, and Love Isolation are pretty good. Generator is fair as was Poison. Machine And Soul, The Skin Game, and Emotion (the song that just won't go away) have been remixed so many times before this that I was rather unimpressed with these versions. Me! I have no idea whether these are new songs from Vicious or rereleases of Berserker, Fury and Strange Charm singles we were promised way back. Any further info would be appreciated. About the only really positive thing I'll say about it is that, in the shops I saw it in at least, it's selling at single CD price despite being a double disc (in a slim-line case). I didn't get a change to note down the track listing but there were no real surprises - the only "new" track is the 1993 remix of "Cars". As for the rumours regarding alternative, previously unavailable versions of tracks, I saw no evidence of this. It seemed like a pretty typical, although comprehensive (a *lot* of tracks - looks like 20+ on each disc) hits collection. A quick sneak inside the pack showed that a fair number of tracks were listed as "single A-side" and so forth, rather than by the album they came from, so it's possible there may be a single mix or two in there, but I can't confirm this. It should be easy to spot due to the earth-shatteringly dull cover - dark blue with _The Best Of Gary Numan_ on it, a couple of coloured bars and a difficult-to-see "dotted" rendition of Gary in slightly darker blue. Oh well, if nothing else it's probably the definitive collection. Anyone want to hazard a guess as to the reason for its release? I find it a little suspicious that it coincides with Beggars Banquet deleting all the previous 2-on-1 discs. Could it be that in future this disc is the only Numan release the BB catalogue will contain and that this compilation provides a way for BB to keep Numan's best available while only actually having to have one disc by him in their catalogue? It seems rather unfair treatment for one of the artists that made the label's name. Well, I can't comment on the NY (*) version of "Escape" or the Yen cover of "Down In The Park" since I haven't heard either but their (only) album _Air_ isn't really similar to Numan's sound at all. Looking through the (copious) credits and acknowledgements on the back of the disc, although Numan goes get a namecheck (and from what I remember of the group's bio he was *very* important in getting them a break) their sound is more closely related to another band they mention, namely Freur. I'd place the sound of _Air_ somewhere between that group and a toned-down, more musically talented (but equally sample-happy) Sigue Sigue Sputnik. Generally a fun group, it's a shame they never really amounted to much - they were dropped by IRS after just one album and although the newsletter they sent me a year or two back indicated that they were hopeful of getting a new deal, the lack of new product from them probably indicates they've gone back to their day jobs. A shame since I consider _Air_ considerably fresher (argh) than anything Numan has done since _Berserker_. Cue request from Derek for a European copy of _Air_ on CD :-) (*) For those who haven't read Dave's discog - NY = Numan/Yen. -- Al Crawford - awrc@dcs.ed.ac.uk Department Of Computer Science, The University of Edinburgh Rm 1410, JCMB, Kings Buildings, Mayfield Rd, EDINBURGH, EH9 3JZ, Scotland Tel: +44 (0) 31 650 5165 Fax: +44 (0) 31 667 7209 ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
