She said that Berserker will no longer be available on CD, ever. Needless to say I am very disappointed and empathise with those who were waiting for the next pressing that the UK Fan Club originally promised later this year. When I next speak to Beryl I will voice my and "your" disappointment and argue that it should be re-pressed and released generally, it being Gary's only studio album that had not seen general UK release on CD and is one of his most loved albums. I wish I knew why this one has not been picked up by Pinnacle for general distribution when Ghost and White Noise have. So, those of you who have them, guard them carefully and treat them with care. If recordable CD technology ever becomes affordable and I get a unit I'll take requests for copies but until then I just have to say I'm sorry. I wish NUMA were more reliable. They often miss their deadlines and fall short on their promises. Derek Derek H. Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Dept. of Biology, Tel. work +1 619 594 2885 San Diego State Univ. First I told her why I had been out of touch for so long; that my 20 month old is dying of cancer. She was shocked and expressed her sympathy and told me that she knew exactly what we have been going through because she was only given 6 months to live some 2 years ago due to a rare form of cancer. This explains all the references to her being quite ill this past two years and why the UK Fan Club has been on the erratic side now and then. Knowing this now makes me feel a little more understanding of things and regret for being openly critical of her and the UK Fan Club in the past. Machine and Soul Extended mixes CD ---------------------------------- The error has been realised. She had distributed some 2000 copies via the UKFC before it was found. The inital copies distributed by Pinnacle also were wrong. The booklet, back and CD itself all list 13 tracks but only the 9 album tracks are on this CD. Correct discs are now available. She had copies at the UKFC HQ. She had offered to exchange them for those that obtained them from her but many were holding on to the erroneous CDs, perhaps viewing them as collectors items not that I would expect anyone to pay anything extra for such CDs. So, the inital copies in the shops may be the older 9 track CDs. Later arrivals will be the proper full length discs. You may have to pop the CD into a player to distinguish the two although the matrix number should be different. The short CDs have been offically withdrawn. Berserker CDs ------------- Beryl said not to give up hope. The reason why no more are expected to be pressed this year was that they didn't have time to get everything organised for it and they want to wait for the number of orders to approach the minimum number they can press i.e. 500. She also thinks that Pinnacle would pick it up as a general release if they were to press another run for the Fan Club. To speed things up I would suggest that those of you who are new to the list and/or have yet to obtain copies of this CD, should email me and tell me how many copies you would buy if it were to become available again. If we can help reach the threshold for repressing then it may be here sooner rather than later. For those new to the list, the Berserker CD was available for a brief while only via the UK Fan Club. I had over 35 copies sent to fans in the USA, Canada and Australia in June '92 who were in touch with me via this Digest. That was the only way people could get it then unless they knew another member of the UK Fan Club for which you have to have a UK mailing address. The CD contained the cassette version of the album with many of the tracks appearing in extended form. It's cost approximately $US24 including p & p from the UK to your address. I would imagine that it would be about the same or even less in the future unless the Pound reverses its downward trend against the $US. Other rereleases ---------------- They still intend to rerelease Strange Charm on CD as well as The Fury but so many projects are ongoing at the moment that these will have to wait. Beryl said in a previous conversation that the extended mixes would be used for a future Fury CD release. The projects that are holding up everything else ------------------------------------------------ Gary has 4 albums on the go at the moment. In addition to his new studio album the ballad album, originally promised for June, an album of instrumentals, and another of atmospheric music are all in process. They have just finished a video of Gary's flying put to music specially composed for the video which is titled "The Radial Pair". The UK tour is only a few weeks away and they are expecting to have a video made of the concert material. Apparently Gary is going to perform a lot of older songs. I said it would be nice to hear new interpretations of songs he rarely performs live instead of yet more versions of Cars, I Die, You Die, We are Glass etc. Gary has just finished vol 11 & 12 of Images - the autobiography discs. These volumes will be pressed on CD and be available through the UK FC. Despite saying these are the first vols to appear on CD some have already done so. Whether these are bootlegs or not I do not know. Anyone? The new Beggar's Banquet CDs ---------------------------- Gary had just finished a promotion for the Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983. And the Cars Sprint '93 from the EP has been played on the radio more this past week although I thought it peaked at number 57 in the UK chart a couple of weeks ago. The new 2CD sets of the BB albums replicate the Asylum sets so there's nothing new on them. Apparently Gary feels they are a rip off. However, as pointed out by Al Crawford, for those who missed Asylum or couldn't afford it these sets should provide wider access to all the Asylum material and at a reasonable price. The sets are being priced as if they were single discs in the UK. The pairing of the albums is the same as 2 on 1 CDs which is unfortunate but might make BB more money in the long run. Paul Mayer informs me the Best of set has virtually the same track selection as Exhibition except for the Cars sprint '93 version and Please Push No More. The I, Assassin and Warriors singles are all represented in the same form as on Exhibition. One reason to be hesitant about the packaging of the October release BB discs is that the booklet for the Best of set has the same inner pages as Exhibition. Only the cover is different. Paul confirmed that a 2CD set of Living Ornaments 79 and 80 is part of the planned releases. This may be a more convenient way to have the concerts than on Asylum where the live material is spread accross 2 CDs, however I do like the way that Asylum vol 3 sounds like one 70+ minute concert. The new studio album -------------------- Beryl had to go answer her family line just as I started to ask about the new album (her mother had just come out of hospital). Not surprisingly, the new album does not have a release date, and it certainly won't be October. In fact, even the title is now in flux, hence my lack of reference to "Vicious". My guess would be early next year or even Spring as Gary will be touring in Oct/Nov. I am also wondering if the tour will become "The Best of" Tour to promote the BB sets. --------------------- That was it. There is some cause for disappointment with the hold up on the new album but also hope that there will be a lot of new material coming next year and of the genres that have been hoped for by many fans -atmospheric and instrumental work. And there's reason to expect all the NUMA albums to be available on CD sometime in the future. Derek Derek H. As far as I know, all of these items are now impossible to find. 1) Yen's only full length album, 'Air', as released in 1990 on CD by IRS Records in Canada (Cat. No. X2-13051). Tracks as follows: Talk To Me Religion Living On An Island Escape Crocodile Tear All Over London Adrenalin Unbelievable Millionaires Why Can't I Air Billie Holiday's Shoes (not on the tape release) As far as I can tell from the credits, Numan is not featured on any songs, but his name is in the liner notes, as is Freur, as noted by another digest subscriber. Only one copy is available. 2) The first Yen single released in Canada from the album 'Air', the song 'Talk To Me (Single Mix)', on cassingle, with b-side 'Air (On A Shoestring)' on IRS Records (Cat. No. 4JM-13804). I have three factory sealed copies of this item. Write to me if you're in the least bit interested, and we can then discuss an interesting trade. As mentioned in my conversation with Beryl we have almost come to the end of the road with our little boy. It has been a long 4.5 months since his brain tumour was diagnosed. We have had moments of hope and more of despair. He has had so many complications culminating 7 weeks ago in significant brain damage after "corrective surgery". We brought him home two weeks ago after the latest scans showed his cancer to have spread throughout his spine, back to his brain and out to his bones. It is likely that his body is riddled with the stuff and the chemotherapy hasn't even slowed down its progress. Jory went back into a coma this past Thursday and it is unlikely he will last much longer. He is almost completely unresponsive to external stimuli. At least he seems calm and peaceful. I'll let you know when he passes away. We already miss him. I have no idea whether these are new songs from Vicious > or rereleases of Berserker, Fury and Strange Charm singles we were > promised way back. > > Any further info would be appreciated. This could get very expensive for > the completist aaarrrghh! Nope, it's not true (unless this is a *different* rumour) but it *is* half of the truth. The "truth" is that Beggars Banquet are planning a *massive* re-release campaign, putting out *all* Gary's albums on that label as 2CD sets - no more of this cramming two albums onto a single disc and leaving off songs. In fact, the re-released 2CD sets will include bonus tracks. Sound familiar? Yep, as far as I can tell, the BB re-releases will be Asylums 1 & 2 split into 4 double CD sets. I've not been able to confirm if there is/isn't a re-release of _Living Ornaments_ yet though. Info on this is apparently contained in the sleeve notes of _The Best Of Gary Numan 1978-1983_ and the new issue of Record Collector has the sets listed as being due for an October release. The best bit's still to come though - the price. As far as I can tell, although these are double CD sets they're being released as single CDs (presumably in the same slimline case as the compilation). So these re-releases should make it possible, if you search around, to pick up all eight albums for less than #45 (in the UK, anyway). This compares favourably with even the cheapest prices I've seen listed for the Asylum sets - I picked mine up for #35 a throw, which is about the cheapest I've seen them here in the UK, and even the lowest US price seems to be about $45 a set. So anyone who has been planning to buy the first two Asylum boxes might want to consider the new re-releases instead. Interesting to note that this does tie in with other rumours that are circulating about Beggars Banquet being about to go under. "Sell the biggest hits in the back catalogue really cheaply" does have an air of "we need money, *really* badly" about it, but the end result (lots of Numan, cheap) seems well worth it. Can you say "annoying"? This makes no sense as the original sets were based on limited play time on 1 CD I thought. This way, to get the better (IMO) later 6 albums you will have to buy all 4 2CD sets. I think I will pass these up as they are seemingly just a retread of Asylum 1 & 2 but without being chronological in order. Paul Mayer, who called me with this info, also confirmed that Living Ornaments will be released in this form as well which may be an improvement over Asylum 3. So, Charles, you may not have to get Asylum 3 if you just want the music. The UK release will cover it completely. I do like the way the two releases were merged together on Asylum 3 so it almost sounds like one 70+ minute concert. Asylum 1 & 2 may still remain as the definitive Gary Numan studio album release.
