I have paraphrased what is in the newsletter below as typing it all in would be far too time consuming. Please do not use any of this as direct quotes. Gary Writes: ------------ The new album will not be ready for the tour because Beggar's Banquet asked me to promote the "Cars" remix and also it would interfere with the promotional campaign for the new "Best of" compilation. I have decided to go with the BB album and save my own work for the new year. It gives me more time to work on it and make it sound even better than it does now, and, with wanting to do a longer live set with more of the older songs, it made good sense to use this tour to promote an album of older songs rather than new ones. I have been interviewed by well over 30 regional radio stations. countless local newspapers, Vox magazine, Q magazine, Auto Express, Replay and featured in many more. Local TV has also been good although I was disappointed not to get on the "Big Breakfast" as that would have helped a lot. Satellite TV has been rerunning early "Top of The Pops" and have shown both "Cars" and "Are Friends' Electric?". The Chart Show also showed "Cars". Whether the single does well or not which depends on Radio 1 which in turn does not fill me with confidence, my profile has been raised significantly over the last few months. Even though I flew up to Derby and performed for the Radio 1 Road Show they still didn't play the single which was very sad. I am pleased with all the work BB have done on the remix. Packaging was extremely good. I had a brilliant day at Silverstone (racing circuit) for the promo, meeting Formula 1 drivers and watching them practice. The airshow season has gone well but with fewer shows due to the recession. Normally I spend about 100 hours per year in the Harvard but this year I've done only 35 which means I have been spending a lot more time in the studio as I promised I would. The "Radial Pair" Video is looking amazing. It's taking a long time to finish due to my own lack of experience in making documentaries. They are very different from pop promos. The convention was a great success. I enjoyed it more than last year - I was not buried under a sea of people like last time. Thanks to Frank and Pete for organising it. Band line up for the tour looks like it will be: John Webb on keyboards, sax and bass; Kipper on guitar; T. J. Davies on vocals, ?? on drums and Ade Orange on keyboards. The light show is big- time again: moving parts, doorways, scanners, gantries etc. It will be at least as good as the Fury tour, if not better. I plan to have 2 hours of material prepared. Charles and Francis have made a new version of AFE? I have redone the vocal and played the guitars again so this is not a remix. It is still undecided when and where the single will come out but it may be soon after the tour. I may even do this version live. I don't know about Kipper's version. It's been out of my hands and wasn't my project to start with. I hope it gets released as it is too good to waste. Finally, I am going to go on a racing driver's course at Silverstone. You start off on Formula Ford like the one I sponsored in the early 80s. The only problem I am going to have if I buy my own car and start to race is finding time to do that, air displays and write albums. I hope to see you all on the tour, Bye Bye, Gary Fan Club News - Beryl Writes: ----------------------------- I know this is the latest newsletter yet and I don't know why I have had so few complaints. You are a very tolerant lot. It must be because it happens all the time and you've got used to it. >From now on you'll get 3 newsletters all separately, one by the end of April, another by the end of August and one before Christmas. We have enjoyed many Fan Club competition days so far this year. Gary really enjoys these and so do I, meeting new people or saying hello again, which is more often the case. The new remix of Cars was out Aug 23rd, with the new double CD set from BB on Sept 20th. The entire BB catalogue will be reissued on CD in 5 2 CD sets between October and December. Gary's plans for this year have not worked out quite right. As the time approached for the completion of the new album he was not too happy with the way it was going. For release prior to the tour it would have to be finished by late July/early August. With the "Cars" release and with major label interest in the new album things began to get complicated. On top of this Gary needed to write the music for the Radial Pair Video. It was decided that Gary would co-operate with Graham and Steve at BB to promote "Cars". The work on the "Radial Pair" video is going well now and should be well worth the wait. I know you will be disappointed that new album has been put back but he insists that it has to be right . I am sorry for the delay with the "Machine and Soul" extended mix CDs. I can honestly say that when we advertise these items to the Fan Club we honestly believe to be able to get them to you within the time stated. We usually fail by a week or two, or three, or four..... I can only say we do try and if you don't like the wait maybe you should order it a month or so after we advertise. After another clanger on the "Machine and Soul" Extended Mixes CD we expect to have the full 13 track versions ready by Sept 21st. We are withdrawing all the stock of 9 track versions from Pinnacle but you can keep them if you want. We will of course replace them free of charge if you want. I would like to mention a couple of things relevant to the convention and particularly buying and selling of items. Some records were being sold at very high prices which are still available from the Fan Club either at shop prices or even less on older stock. Of course, rare records are worth whatever someone is prepared to pay for them. We encourage a variety of stalls at the convention to give you an opportunity to buy or swap rare items. At the Fan Club stall we try to come up with unique items like Gary's hand written lyrics, artwork etc plus Numa Records releases, posters, T-shirts, mugs etc. I would like to know if you receive any sales offers posted to you from other than the Fan Club. We are the only official fan club. Please let me know the details of any offers of Gary related material. I have decided to do a complete U-turn from what I said in the last newsletter about overseas fans. I will now run the overseas fan club direct from P.O. Box 14, Staines, Middlesex TW19 5AU, UK. As the numbers grow I will look out for someone from that country to run their own branch. In the meantime, any overseas fans are welcome to rejoin the fan club direct. To the many people who have written to me on this matter, I can only say "OK, you were right!" Beryl Gary's Questions ---------------- Q. The B-side's to "Love Needs No Disguise" and "Sister Surprise" are the same yet are titled "Face to Face" and "Letters" respectively. Why was that done? A. The cut was done while I was on tour. The cutter made a mistake and cut the wrong track from the tape. By the time is was noticed the records were being pressed. Q. Is the "Tubeway Days" poster the one with lots of Garys on the underground? A. Yes. Q. There are a lot of odd tracks on the Numa label. Is there a plan to release them on a compilation like the "Year 1" compilation? A. Not really. Q. Have you any plans to release "The Fury" and "Strange Charm" on CD? A. They were both available on CD format upon original release. They are going to be available through the Fan Club in the near future. Q. Is the camcorder recording of the Blackburn concert on the Emotion Tour going to become available? A. Almost definitely. Along with the next tour and possibly even a copy of the Outland Tour. Q. Would you consider releasing a soundtrack of your concert intros over the years? i.e. Skin Mechanic, Berserker tour etc. A. As they come from existing songs, mainly b-sides, it seems a bit of a rip-off to put out an album like that, however if enough people would like an album like that then we will do one. Q. Will the images series be continued and if so on CD? A. The next images will be available quite soon and will be on CD only. We will be reissuing the previous images on CD as well. Q. How much preproduction do you do on the albums before actually recording them. A. Not a great deal. As I have a 24 track studio in my house I can work even the demos directly onto the 24 track machine. Q. How do you write your songs these days? Is it synths and drum machine or guitar? A. I don't have a drum machine. I write mainly on synth and samplers although I am using guitar more and more these days. Q. Are you finding the recession is affecting you just like most other people at the moment? A. Very much so. We see it in concert sales, merchandising, and record sales. Not just my own product either but across the whole industry. Q. Who is your latest favourite in the music industry? A. Jesus Jones, Sisters of Mercy, Faith No More and Stone Temple Pilots. Q. Is your father still managing your career? A. Yes, the whole family is involved one way or another. Q. Do you still own the Corvette? A. Yes, but it is being worked on at the moment after standing for a while because of my everyday cars being sponsored for many years. Q. Can you feel more at ease these days and go out without being recognised? A. Not that much to be honest. It's a bit calmer now, but I'm still recognised all the time. Q. Have you recently been tempted to live abroad? A. No I like it here. Q. Do you ever think that you will do a world tour again? A. I hope so, but it depends on getting a major record deal and having products available in the different countries. Q. Is the next tour going to Europe? A. No. Q. Whatever happened to the Atmosphere albums? A. They're still going to happen. All these things have to be written and recorded which takes a great deal of time. Not only that, but you cannot release too many things too close to each other or else it becomes difficult for people to afford them all. We have to try to be sensible with our release schedule and workload for the fan's sake as well as my own. Competition Events ------------------ Georgina Anderson describes the organisation that goes into the competitions and prize day events. From preparing the competition phone line questions to arranging venues and publicity for the prize events. I'll spare you the details as it is of negligible importance to those of us who can't even access the Competition line phone number. 1993 Numan Convention --------------------- Written by Francis Drake. Regents Palace Hotel, London,2pm, 21st August, 1993 organised by Pete 'n' Frank (Peter Gilbert & Francis Drake). Set up began at 8am. Stalls were set up by Beggar's Banquet, The Fan Club, T-shirt stands, artwork stands, photodisplays, Records and tapes etc. Peter Gilbert had a photo exhibition of Gary from the very early days to present including the the very first photo session of Gary in that park bench pose for the first interview with City Magazine. There were two video rooms and an all day bar open much to the relief of many. At 4.30 it was Gary's Question Time. Gary entered to the sound of "Airlane".. Despite nervousness at first, Gary soon relaxed, chatty and happy to answer all questions. Gary was sometimes blunt with honesty and there were many funny moments. After a couple hours break there was a second Q & A session followed by a Numan Disco during which Gary talked with fans, signed autographs and albums and had photos taken with some of the fans. The Disco went on till late. A brilliant day, everyone was really friendly and lots said it was better than last year's. Gary made it a special day by being really patient. he really gave of himself - we must have worn him out. I don't know of another pop star who would put themselves out as much as Gary did. There are various photos of Gary throughout at Silverstone, at the Cars promo shoot, the convention, at competition prize day events, and with his plane (of course). The End ------------ Derek here. This new of Beryl opening up the UK Fan Club to overseas members is very welcome. It should give all non-UK fans the a chance to get all NUMA new and merchandise. I will wait to see if I can relinquish my obligations. As for having a branch of the club in the USA and whether I would take that upon myself will depend on a lot of things which I would have to discuss with Beryl personally. I wonder how Jim Napier feels about the situation? - Brian? Beryl told me on the phone the BB releases are the same as the "Asylum" releases. The inclusion of the Living Ornaments material on 2 CDs may explain why the number of extra tracks per disc is different. The 3CD set from Receiver sounds promising. Might we see the "Berserker"tracks in non-extended form? Maybe a lot of b-sides? I am curious to see how this will work with the Numa rerelases of "The Fury" and "Strange Charm". We'll find out the answers to all these questions sometime. I'm pooped, Have a good week, Derek Derek H.
