I have never heard that song since, although I remember it fairly | clearly; it sounded like Fury-era stuff, with the clanky kind of metal | bass and female vox. Does anyone know what the story is with this song? | Is it available anywhere? It sounds like you're referring to "Change Your Mind," which I believe someone pointed out is by Gary Numan and Bill Sharpe. It's available on both the 2CD and 2LP set "Exhibition." Hello, all! My name is Sunil Shah, nick-name Linus... (yes, yes, don't tell me: Linus is Sunil backwards :-) I'm 26, and studying Engineering Physics at Chalmers, Gothenburg, Sweden. You know, Gary Numan is not particularly well known in Sweden, so its great to hear all the info you people offer! When I was, say 15, I used to listen to Radio Luxemburg :-) Well, didn't we all! Hm, no we didn't, if we're in the US. Anyway, all of Europe used to listen to RTL, which was a good source for new music. (RTL left the medium-wave band recently) That's where I heard *Music for Chameleons* the first time. *WOW* was all I could say, when I was able to speak again :-) I heard *Ghosts* by Japan at about the same time, invoking the same mind-numbing, goose- pimpling reaction... So, since then I've been hooked onto most of Numan's music: "I, Assassin", "Warriors", "Berserker", Down in the Park, Airlane, etc. etc. being my absolute favourites. I'm planning on catching up, with later releases, though I know I prefer the "fuller" sound of his previous Dr+Bass+Kb+Vo settings. Nowadays, I listen - a lot - to "experimental" rock such as Yes and Genesis, and quite a bit of Jazz. I mean, besides GN, of course! I play the drums, used to play classical guitar. And talking of drumming... One thing that I find quite unusual is the finger-snaps on "The 1930's Rust". >>> Why on earth are the finger snaps on ONE and THREE of the beat? Wouldn't that song be twice as cool (excuse me :-) if they were on 2 & 4, like traditional jazz and rock? Actually, never ever heard that before! Wish we could have more of Pino Paladino :-) BTW, isn't Chris Slade (Dr on "I, Assassin") with Manfred Mann? Well, that's it for now... Linus++; PS. Make me 5 Berserker CD:s while you're at it :-) DS. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 1994 20:42:45 -0500 (EST) From: Court William Harson Subject: Intro To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all! This is my introductory message. I am a 22-year-old video production student in NYC. Although I was but a youngster when I first heard Gary, I recently rediscovered him, and in doing so perhaps sparked some sort of a revival... One night early last summer, a friend and I took a tape of "Cars" (the only thing we had at the time) and cruised through the streets of Allentown, Pennsylvania after midnight. The windows in my car were down and my stereo played nothing but "Cars." We approached as many pedestrians as possible, slinking by them so that they could not help but hear the beautiful sounds coming from my car. The following morning, we went to the local import CD shop to see what Numan they had (we were hooked) and they had at least three CDs. When I returned later that day, all three were sold and I thought perhaps my night ride may have had something to do with this coincidence. In any case, I have since become a much bigger fan. And when I stumbled on this digest, my first question, and forgive my ignorance, is to ask what Gary is up to now. -A friend called Five ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 18 Jan 94 22:35:02 MST From: Joe.Lindstrom%f551.n5500.z201@cpubbs.cuug.ab.ca (Joe Lindstrom) Subject: Introduction To: numan@cs.uwp.edu At long, long last, I'm finally "connected" to Numanews! For the past year or so, a friend of mine who has internet access at the University of Calgary has been forwarding me copies of the digest on an infrequent basis. I've found them to be a GOLD MINE of information on my favorite artist. But, having no internet access myself, I could not participant and was reliant on Sam for my "feed". That recently changed. A local sysop, in a FidoNet-style network I'm involved in called MetroNet, has cooked up his own gateway. My first issue of the digest gave him some headaches, but otherwise we've got functional email and newsgroups. Anyways, a bit about myself. I'm a part-time cab driver and full-time student at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. I'm studying..... ok, please don't throw any bricks at me.... broadcasting. Majoring in radio. Yes, I'm gonna be one of those jerkoffs who won't play Gary's stuff. :-) But hey, before you warm up the tar, remember that jocks don't get to pick their playlist: it's the program directors you wanna target. :-) I have been running my own BBS here in Calgary since 1986. The system's name is "The Telekon/2 BBS" (the /2 refers to the use of the OS/2 operating system here), and my handle is "The Liquid Engineer". Thought you might like that. :-) I've been a Numanoid (the term I've always used is "Numaniac") since 1980. As with most of us, "Cars" was my first exposure... I was just getting into listening to music on the radio at that time, and missed out on AFE and other pre-Cars releases. I picked up a copy of The Pleasure Principle because I loved the one song... and then started to really play the rest of the album a lot. Enter... Mom. She and I hadn't been "in touch" much at that point, so she decided to do something nice for me. She picked up on my interest, and bought me two tickets to see Gary Numan perform live at the Max Bell Arena here in Calgary, Alberta (this was 1980, during the Living Ornaments Tour). The concert blew my socks off. Calgary had NEVER seen anything at all like it. I and everybody there, my mother included, REALLY enjoyed the spectacle. So who cared that it got a bad review the next day? I did, and that's when I think I knew I was hooked. For Christmas that year, I got "Replicas" and "Telekon", and the addiction had taken firm hold. :-) Finding his stuff has, since "Warriors", been very difficult here in Calgary. A local record store (called "The Record Store", may as well give 'em a plug, as they're wonderful!) has done a heroic job in tracking down some of this stuff. Because of them, I have CD copies of "The Fury" (outstanding album!) and "Strange Charm" (nearly as good). In fact, other than some of the "rare tracks", I've got pretty much everything on CD with the exception of "Berserker" ("Isolate" helps, but I still want the original!) But unlike some of you, I'm not prone to picking apart the albums. I either enjoy 'em or I don't. Ok, like most of you, "Outland" isn't my favorite, but it HAS its charms and I *DO* stick it in the CD player from time to time (my fave tracks are "Outland" and "From Russia Infected"), as I do with all of my Numan collection. Unlike, apparently, *MOST* of you, I absolutely love "Machine + Soul". As you all know, Numan's albums are "an acquired taste", and I usually need a few plays before I really get off on one. M+S was the first, and only, Numan album I loved from the very first play. Hell, I even don't mind "U Got The Look"! So let me shake you up just a bit. I'm going to rank my albums in descending order. I'll list only those ones I've got on CD (ruling out Living Ornaments, for example, which I've still got on vinyl). I think you'll find I tend to disagree with "the established wisdom" here... but maybe a few of you might agree. The Pleasure Principle (still the best!) Machine + Soul (sorry, but I love it!) Telekon (sure to stir up an argument) The Fury The Skin Mechanic (live) Replicas The Plan Strange Charm Outland New Anger Warriors Tubeway Army I, Assassin Dance Peel Sessions (live) (Not included: "Selection", "Exhibition", "The Collection") Feel free to agree or disagree. You might even change my mind. But c'mon gang: we're here because we're fans, not critics. I don't mind some constructive criticism, but I've seen a lot of the other kind and it doesn't do anyone any good at all. Let's just enjoy the music. Now I'm wondering if that LP is available as a CD. If so, > where can I pick one up? Don't bother. Gary only participates on the one song. The rest of the album is really awful. I'd rate it 0 out of 10. All there is that is worth getting is the "Change Your Mind" singles -- The 7" and 12" versions. I got my copy of the LP as a $3 cut-out, and I still felt ripped off. -- Gregor ----------------------------------------------------------- Gregor Torrence greg@image.com (Attention Internet users: do not use your mailer's reply.
