I was still snoozing in bed at the time but my ears perked up automatically. This must mean that someone at NPR must have at least one Numan CD as I don't think "Complex" is on any compilation. I am often surprised and pleased that NPR uses some of my favourite artists for these interludes. Earlier this week I heard some OMD. I always thought NPR was tasteful :-) Derek ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Sharpe was working on "Famous Faces", an album where he worked with all sorts of different folk. It was for this album that he worked with Gary on "Change Your Mind". The rest of the album was other folks with Mr Sharpe. "Change Your Mind" was a successful single, tbe only one, from the Famous Faces project and a few years later, Numan and Sharpe got together again to work on the "Automatic" album, which is a rather good album IMO, and it's all Sharpe and Numan all the way through, with remixes of "Change Your Mind" and a interestingly different sound and feel. I don't buy too much stuff anymore ($ is tight) but I have much of his older material up through "White Noise." I've seen him twice (1980 in Ann Arbor and 1983 in Detroit) and thought he was great. I'm heavily into Tangerine Dream and Ozric Tentacles in addition to Gary 'God' Numan. I am Chris Schumann, 28 college grad living in Madison, WI, USA. (Where GN himself played twice before I bought records!) I am an electrical engineer, and a big-time music buff. I own about 375 CDs and 250 LPs, including almost everything by GN I've ever seen. A little discography: The Plan (LP) The Plan Vol I (EP) Tubeway Army Replicas The Plan Vol III (EP) The Pleasure Principle Telekon Living Ornaments Dance I, Assassin New Man Numan Warriors Warriors (12" single) Berserker Berserker (12") My Dying Machine (12") White Noise Change Your Mind (12") Your Fascination (12") The Fury Miracles (12") I Can't Stop (10") I Can't Stop (12" Picture disc) This is Love (12") Strange Charm Londom Times (12") Radio Heart (US 12") Radio Heart (12" picture disc) Ghost Cars '88 (12") New Anger (7") Metal Rhythm (uk LP, us CD) The Collection The Skin Mechanic Outland Heart (cd5 single) Isolate Machine+Soul Machine+Soul 1 (cd5) Machine+Soul 2 (cd5) The Skin Game (cd5) Cars 1993 (cd5) BTW, The Fury CD was the first CD I ever bought. Thanks to all who responded. For those of you who are new to the Digest I'd like to let you know that this is an ideal place to help fellow fans complete their Numan music collection. If you see a CD of any import Numan material, especially The Fury and Strange Charm, let the digest know and you will likely get enquiries. US releases of Outland and New Anger are comon and probably of little interest. Second, welcome to our new subscribers. It's getting increasingly international which is excellent. Third: > From: chuckies@binkley.cs.mcgill.ca (Charles J Savoie) > > It sounds like you're referring to "Change Your Mind," which I > believe someone pointed out is by Gary Numan and Bill Sharpe. > It's available on both the 2CD and 2LP set "Exhibition." > > Charles This is only true for the Canadian release on Polydor. I know the initial CD runs duplicated Cars instead of having the original and E'Reg model mixes. The European releases had no Sharpe & Numan Tracks. Fourth: Joe Lindstrom lists gary's album in order of preference > The Pleasure Principle (still the best!) > Machine + Soul (sorry, but I love it!) > Telekon (sure to stir up an argument) > The Fury > The Skin Mechanic (live) > Replicas > The Plan > Strange Charm > Outland > New Anger > Warriors > Tubeway Army > I, Assassin > Dance > Peel Sessions (live) I posted my list sometime last year. 1. Berserker (some of us are lucky enough to have this on CD :) 2. Dance (Wow we really disagree on this one - lots of fans *love* this one) 3. The Pleasure Principle (agreed) 4. Replicas (agreed) 5. Warriors (you rank this and I, Assassin much lower, I think he was still 6. I, Assassin being very creative on these albums) 7. Metal Rhythm (almost agree) 8. Telekon (I'm a detractor but I know many *love* this one too) 9. The Fury (sorry, the first signs of a rut IMO) 10. Machine and Soul (it's better than Outland but.......) 11. Strange Charm (almost agree) 12. Tubeway Army (agree) 13. Outland (ranking this above Dance, I, Assassin and Warriors? very brave :) 14. The Plan (OK, it's raw but I still don't like it) > (Not included: "Selection", "Exhibition", "The Collection") There's also "The Other Side of Gary Numan" which has two unique-to-CD tracks on it. > Feel free to agree or disagree. You might even change my mind. But c'mon > gang: we're here because we're fans, not critics. I don't mind some > constructive criticism, but I've seen a lot of the other kind and it doesn't > do anyone any good at all. Let's just enjoy the music. I think people are just disappointed that Gary is not breaking new ground and making distinctive music of his former calibre. Most artists hit some sort of ceiling. It just seems difficult for Numan fans to accept especially when each new album gives hints of what could be a wonderful return to musical genius. Greg is referring to the Bill Sharpe album I think. The Sharpe and Numan album "Automatic" had Gary do vocals on every track. It has it's moments but is very slick dance pop rather than typical Numan. Most of the songs are not terribly memorable. "Automatic" was on CD but has been deleted for over a year now. It is getting very difficult to find. OK, that's it. Derek ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. To: NUMAN@CS.UWP.EDU, OMD@CS.UWP.EDU Dear List(s), This is going out to the NUMAN and OMD lists by way of introduction: I'm Edmund Chattoe, a 28 year old PHD student in economics at the University of Oxford. I got into NEW WAVE recording it off the radio onto reel to reel tape! (My family was kinda lo-fi!) Things have improved a lot since then and I'm currently listening to the new double CD NUMAN reissues with extra tracks and watching my CRUSH video! I like all sorts of other electronic and new wave too, including relatively obscure stuff like THE VAPORS, the MINNY POPS and MARTHA AND THE MUFFINS. (Also like the odd "new" group like MOMUS and JESUS JONES.) I'm posting my discographies of OMD/NUMAN to Dave Datta as they were compiled more or less independently of his. The union should be interesting! When I'm not listening to music or writing my thesis I read the sort of new wave people who go with the music: WILLIAM GIBSON, J G BALLARD, MARTIN AMIS. I guess that just about does it, Edmund "There was a young lady from Crewe, whose limericks stopped at line two ..." "There was an old man from Verdun ..." ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
