I saw a copy of the recently released Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983 from Beggars Banquet. Upon initial release it was thought to be virtually identical to Exhibition from 1988. However, there are a few differences. Instead of one or two tracks being different out of the 34 or 35 I think there is actually 5. Also, it includes the original mix of Cars as well as the '93 Sprint version from the Cars EP. The booklet *is* identical to that from Exhibition except for the cover. I just wanted to clarify this after the initial comments made about this compilation when it was released. If someone has the Telekon/I, Assassin 2CD set could you please tell us about the new song - "This House is Cold". A review would be nice. Also, my original sighting if the Best of set at $45 was a Japanese pressing. So the high price is not just store mark-up on the UK discs as I had originally thought. ( this is in no particular order ) Down In The Park.... I actually think that the best version of this is on "Living Ornaments", (it also happens to be on the soundtrack to "Urgh, a music War", which is worth seeing just for that song alone. Films....I agree with the wall of sound description. But again, I may like the 'L.O.' version better. I think the the "Pleasure Priciple" stuff sounds "Bigger" live, but I heard "Living Ornaments" before "PP". Replicas.... I know that I'm in the minority here, but I love the cold, droney sound of this track. Cry The Clock Said.... Again I have to side with Derek on this. I was SO bummed when this wasn't on the original CD release. I've sampled drums from this song. A Subway Called You.... This has such a visual quality to it. I think of this song often when waitng for a subway at night. Stories.... I have an amazing video in mind for this song. I wish that I could film it, you'd love it. (guess which album of his is probably my favourite) Music For Chameleons.... The music and lyrics really grab me on this one. Did you know that he wrote this while flying over America (actually I think it was Kansas)? He was flying a twin engine and they were slightly out of sync. ( Resonating, it happens when you have two tone which are very close in pitch, it creates a beating sound ) Anyway, the resonance was making a beat that he wrote the melody to while he was flying. I always thought that this one sounded like flying. Plus I really like the production of this song, the keys, bass and drums all sound great. I have a neat way that I'd present this live. The Iceman Comes.... I guess that this one king of reaches back to the "I Assasin" and "Dance" sound. (that's kind, not king) Here Am I.... Long, depressing, what is there not to love? Empty Bed, Empty Heart.... Depressing, and could have been written by me if I were more talented. This is New Love.... Great sounds, great music, and Gary's soft, big voice. Cold Warning.... See "This is New Love" Call Out the Dogs.... (extended version) I love the "Blade Runner" samples and extra lyrics on the long version. I Still Remember.... Boy is he good at depressing songs. I have a good video in ming for this one, too. My Breathing.... This song gets my blood pumping. I wish that I had 'Strange Charm on CD just for this song. Hunger.... I was so bummed out when this wasn't on "New Anger". Skin Game.... the first time I heard this Iwas as excited as the first time I heard 'My Breathing'. It's a very unique song. It made want to echo every boring bass line I ever wrote to give it new life. Plus the snare rythum is inspired! I Wonder.... I thought that this could actually have been a hit in the US. Again, depressing as hell, and beautifully so. The Aircrash Bureau.... Dense orchestration of this song is beautiful. (oops, I forgot a "the" at the beginning of this line" Remind Me To Smile.... I'm a sucker for songs with CR78 drums (that is the machine that he used extensively on "Telekon" and "Dance". We Are Glass.... Once I figured out how to play this one I was hooked. I even have played this one live. There are many others that I probably like as much, especially some of the b-sides. The B-sides from "Berserker" are all uniformly amazing, and the B's from "Dance" are also great. Many of his ballads are straight out my own experiences, so I always love those. I guess that I'm generally a pretty depressed guy :) ! Oh yah, I also like "Cars", but I took that as generally assumed. I do a great version of "Metal" which goes straight into "Cars", with a neat link between the two. I wouldn't bother with a serious recording of any of the Numan songs I do, they are all pretty faithful to the originals and would not really add anything to the songs. Was this post long enough? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Apparently in Goldmine there are references to a new 3 CD Gary Numan compilation from Japan. Anyone have details? I tend not to trust the accuracy of rumours that often get printed in Goldmine. What might this be? The possiblilites: 1. A misprint with this being the Japanese release of the 2 CD Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983 2. A new best of compilation which would seem redundant unless it contains Numa catalogue material. The person who related the rumour said it was referred to as a "Best of". 3. A Japanese release of the three rare-on-cd Numa albums Berserker, The Fury and Strange Charm. My hope is for 3 but my gut says it is probably 1. If you know anything further let us all know in next week's digest. Following is the results of the Numan Top Twenty poll up to March 21 1994. This poll is ongoing: if you want to get your two-bits worth in here, send your list to me in e-mail. I'm also seriously thinking about a "Worst-20 poll", if you've got one of those lists then feel free to send it along also. Participants so far include: Joe Lindstrom Kay Teel Duane Bennett (submitted top-25, I chopped the last five) Derek Langsford (didn't rank them) I've given each song nominated one point. In the comments below each song, I'll note which versions were preferred and whether or not the song was a "top-5" pick by any of the nominators (if Derek wants to let me know what his "top 5" picks are, I'll add this info to the list). Some of the results were rather surprising, considering that I had thought I was in the minority in terms of really liking both Gary's older and newer material. The winner was no surprise: "Down In The Park" is simply a fantastic song. I also expected to see "Cars" and "Films" right up there, but was a bit surprised that all three voters who nominated "Cars" also preferred the "E Reg" remix. But the big surprise was Strange Charm's "My Breathing" and Machine + Soul's "The Skin Game", which each garnered three votes also. In fact, had this been a top-25 list, "My Breathing" would have received a fourth vote from myself. Also of interest was the strong showing of the Metal Rhythm (or New Anger if you bought it on this side of the Atlantic) album, with nominations from all four voters, even Derek Langsford. The balance of the voting pretty much fell to expectations: highest concentration of votes landed on songs from the earlier albums. However, it should also be noted that all fourteen studio albums had at least one nomination. Additionally, the three live albums that I know about (Living Ornaments, Live White Noise, Skin Mechanic) all garnered nods for "best performance" at least once. It looks like as a group (albeit a small one so far), we do tend to love Numan at ALL of his various career stages.
