HAMMOND) Subject: Generator To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Well, on Wednesday, I finally got my copy of Generator's cover of Are 'Friends' Electric? in the mail. I'll save the reviews to those who are able to write them far better than I. I will say it is quite a different version than the original. Overall, I give it a 6.5 or 7 out of 10. The CD contains the following tracks: Are Friends Electric (Radio Mix) Are Friends Electric (Eccentric Mix) Bring Back The Love Going Home. The last two tracks are all Generator and have nothing to do with Numan at all. In fact, IMHO, those two non-Numan tracks give "Remix Remake Remodel" a strong challenge of being the all time worst non-Numan songs to appear on a Numan related release. In Are Friends Electric, Numan reprises the speaking parts of the original version. This is actually him redoing those parts and not a splice from the original cut. I was told by ABCD Records that the Da Da Dang singles of "Like A Refugee" (there will be two singles much like Machine & Soul were released as) will available late next week. They also have copies of a Berserker video on videodisc. They are selling the videodisc for $75.00 and videocassette copies of it for $20.00. Me! I will admit it is out of place on this album after 'Child with the Ghost' but still... 3) Sleep By Windows -Weird lyrics faintly resonating of S&M? speeds up at the end in a nice instrumental 4) She's Got Claws -The first 7" I ever bought and it was 3 years ago Sax and Mick Karn I think my fave part is when he sing those "Here on the floor" lines followed by a few keyboard notes 5) Nightlife -say what you want, the lyrics on -Automatic- may be redundant but Sharpe gives them a different sound I especailly like Voices and I'm on Automatic 6) Tracks almost three minutes of pure joy to listen to His live versions are equally as powerful 7) Call Out the Dogs I first gotthis on Skin Mechanic and it had an incredible effect on em me "These young boys just make me laugh" Sad but true words from a forgotten pioneer in 1985 8) Heart I admit, ok, I like Outland. Well, that's if I don't listen to 'Dance' or something like that first. The album isn't bad unless it's compared with his early classics This tune is what I like to listen to when I'm down Also, Outland, if I'm correct, made UK#39\ the last album to do so well was The Fury (UK#24) 9) Warriors -Bass, Bass, Bass 10) My Breathing A fantastic instrumental opening when I first heard this song, I was sure Strange Charm was going to be a classic however, then came Unknown and Hostile but 11) Strange Charm I like it, ok it's repetitive but after having to listento five minutes of awful backing vox on I Can't Stop this was a welcome respite 12) We Take Mystery (To Bed) nothing I can say will be new 13) War Games/ War Songs I didn't know who Vera Lynn was! But does anyone know who Steven is? (was) 14) She Cries the sound, the sound "She Cries like I do" anyone know allthe words to this? I also think the opening really sets the mood for this what is interesting to me is that it seems like Gary did all the instrumentation for this song 15) Crash Same example save for Roger Taylor on drums. 16) A Subway Called You The lyrics do it for me on this one. 17) Confession Don't slash my tires or take my hubcaps (well someone already took the hubcaps) This song was blasted by The Stud Brothers in Melody Maker but I don't think they listened to it Again, if you listen to somehting like Crash then this well of course Confession seems crappy but if not, well, I like it 18) Devious (The New Anger Version) Okay, the female vox should be scrapped or at least toned down for this song but my early idea what the song was about ie Gary once dated a girl who ended up in a girlie mag seemed to funny to me in light ofmy situation at the timne 19) We Need It Again, very repetitive and probably very annoying for some but for me, it works The Pleasure Skin is another example 20) Empty Bed, Empty Heart a simple song with decent lyrics 21) Replicas Ok the whole album save for The machman 22)Only A Downstat just heard itrecently wished it was on Replicas 23) Face to Face/ Films/The Rhthym of the Evening/Faces/Puppets ok im a weak person sorry about all the add-ons M ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
