(i was the one who kept whining about not knowing who beryl was.) i am an eighteen year old synthesis major at the berklee college of music, in boston, massachusetts, USA, and gary numan is my personal jesus. or, he was up till machine plus soul; i've never heard berserker. presently he shares the position with thomas "golden age of wireless era" dolby, and a few others. anyhow, thanks for listening, and hope to hear something soon-- erin ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Apr 1994 19:17:38 -0700 (PDT) From: Koenig Fuerio Subject: Introduction To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan list) Hi. My name is Andrew, I'm an undergrad at Johns Hopkins and/or USC, soon to be a grad student in linguistics at USC. And here comes more information that you could possibly want to know about me: I've been listening to Gary Numan since "Cars" came out (I'm sure that's a pretty common response), when I was around 10 or so. The first album I bought of his was Pleasure Principle. After he stopped getting airplay in America, and coincidentally I started getting into punk (early-mid 80's), I stopped following him. I was quite surprised to see a new album of his in 1988, and I was even more surprised to find that it was better than I Assassin (the last album I'd bought, about six years before maybe?). I immediately went out and looked to see what I'd missed, and I was pretty started to see how much music he'd released, and that all of it had been totally ignored by alternative radio in both LA and Baltimore (although I requested "New Anger" and "Devious" from KROQ enough times that they eventually played them a few times to shut me up). When I first got into Gary Numan, my favorite band, no question, was Devo. Over the next few years, in addition to Gary Numan, I got pretty heavily into Fad Gadget, OMD, Romeo Void, the Waitresses, and X. At the moment, I listen to a lot of early new-wave synth, but also to a lot of music of other styles (gothic, industrial dance, techno/rave, punk, Japanoise/Euronoise/industrial, etc.) I'd say my favorite bands at the moment are Gary Numan, Fad Gadget, Skinny Puppy, Sisters of Mercy, Nine Inch Nails, Pavement, Hole, Nephilim, Devo, Rancid, Einsturzende Neubauten, Aphex Twin, Orb, Sonic Youth, They Might Be Giants, and Babyland. At least their CDs and records seem to be playing more than others'.... When I was younger, I wanted to play with synths--mostly because of Gary Numan and Fad Gadget. However, I ended up picking up the guitar instead and doing guitar and vocals with a few bad punk bands. I finally got into playing keyboards around the turn of the decade and now play mostly dark and angry industrial stuff. My favorite Numan song is "Down in the Park." I also love "Are Friend Electric?" and "I Die You Die." I'm sure this is a pretty cliched selection (especially since all three appear on Selection, come to think of it), but there you have it. ___________ ______________________________________________________________ / payn@ \ "Let an artist show you how to bring a curse down on Satan" \ / scf.usc.edu / --Hilt / \____________/_____________________________________________________________/ ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 24 Apr 1994 22:02:37 -0600 From: bkoen@crl.com (Bryan Koen) Subject: Introduction To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi, my name is Bryan Koen. I am 24 yrs old. I have been listening to Gary seriously since about 1987. I have subscribed to this list previously, and have finally gotten a reliable connection to the NET. Other musical interests include really anything early 80s, classic rock, and well as the new "alternative" stuff, to jazz, to new age. Pretty much if is musical, I like it. I play piano and keyboard (hence why I like Gary and synth music). I think I chewed up enough band-width so I'll close. Thanks, Bryan Koen ---- .sig what's that? March 28th "Are Friends' Electric?" by Generator 5th April "Like A Refugee" Gary and Da Da Dang 25th April And guess what Gary's next solo releases are going to be? Live E.P (Hammersmith Apollo 1993) 23rd May Live Album (Hammersmith Apollo 1993) 27th June Another live album to add to our collection. Seems like we get two studio albums for every live one - rather a high ratio IMO. The live album apparently will be about 2 hours on 2 CDs containing the complete set for the "Dream Corrosion" Tour during which Gary debuted his new "power" style. The tour promoted the Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983 release in the UK and many older songs were played. The new studio album (running title "Scar" I believe) will be out before the 1994 tour which will be in November. Dates are being booked at the moment. So that's about it. Derek P.S thank you to those who sent congrats messages on the birth of Trevyn. He's being a difficult baby - the dreaded colic. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I am still looking for this album on CD. I know it's been long out of print. I've exploited every lead, but always seem to just miss the boat. I am ready willing and able to pay *CASH* for this CD to complete my collection. What would it take to get you to part with yours? (I know that Numa plans to rerelease an extended mixes CD "real soon now", and while I will purchase that, I want the original mixes, too). -- Ronald Cole E-mail: ronald@netcom.com OPTX International zippy@ecst.csuchico.edu "The Bill Of Rights -- Void Where Prohibited By Law" ------------------------------ Date: 25 Apr 94 13:52:58 EST From: "Kay Teel" Subject: War Songs To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Reply to Mark Darmofal: > 13) War Games/ War Songs > I didn't know who Vera Lynn was! > But does anyone know who Steven is? (was) I think Vera Lynn was a singer in the 30's/40's who was sort of a pin-up or romantic idol for British soldiers during WWII. Makes sense in the context of the song, anyway. Steven is a reference to Steve Strange, one of the more visible leaders of the New Romantic movement in the UK in the early 80's, and singer for Visage (and, later, Strange Cruise). Numan hated Strange for some reason, and had no kind words for the New Romantics in general. There are other references to this in songs from the same era. (I think in Rhythm of the Evening??) I honestly don't know where the personal animosity toward Strange came from, but I always had a suspicion Steve might have been bitchy about Numan in the press or something. As for New Romanticism: well, looking back now, I can't blame Gary for putting it down. It was a fad, and a pretty silly one at that! But the first Visage LP, IMO, is great, and there are a few New Romantic singles that I consider classics. (Angel Face by Shock, e.g.) And of course the link to Strange from Numan would be Chris Payne, who wrote (co-wrote?) Fade To Grey, a Visage hit, and played with Visage. --Kay Teel teelk@elmer1.bobst.nyu.edu p.s./Anyone know whatever happened to Steve Strange? After the truly dreadful Strange Cruise album, he seems to have thankfully given up music, but anyone know what became of him? ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
