Well, it's such a rare event that I thought you'd better know... A week ago last Saturday, Gary turned up in "new power" mode on the late night show "In Bed with MeDinner"; He did two numbers on the show (complete with band)... one which I didn't know and a rather loud kick ass version of "Are Friends Electric". Boy, does Gary look like one psychotic bunny now... I like it. (He said arranging tickets for the live concert at the Hammersmith Apollo (That is the Odeon BTW, it just got took over, in case you think Gary is playing a different venue when he plays London at the end of tours)... just 15 minutes walk from this workstation B) ) Dj ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 2 May 94 12:36:21 BST From: Al Crawford Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #77 To: Gary Numan > And of course the link to Strange from Numan would be Chris > Payne, who wrote (co-wrote?) Fade To Grey, a Visage hit, and played > with Visage. I'd have thought a more direct link would have been Billy Currie. Payne was never a Visage member - he was only ever credited with co-writing "Fade To Grey" and didn't perform with the group. Currie, on the other hand, was a long-time Visage member and has a Numan link through The Touring Principle tour, during which he was part of Gary's band (it's his keyboard pyrotechnics that you can hear throughout Living Ornaments '79). -- Al Crawford - awrc@dcs.ed.ac.uk Department Of Computer Science, The University of Edinburgh Rm 1410, JCMB, Kings Buildings, Mayfield Rd, EDINBURGH, EH9 3JZ, Scotland Tel: +44 (0) 31 650 5165 Fax: +44 (0) 31 667 7209 ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 3 May 1994 11:06:17 +0100 (BST) From: Ian Palmer Subject: Hating Steve Strange To: numan@cs.uwp.edu > Steven is a reference to Steve Strange, one of the more visible > leaders of the New Romantic movement in the UK in the early 80's, and > singer for Visage (and, later, Strange Cruise). I honestly don't know where > the personal animosity toward Strange came from, but I always had a > suspicion Steve might have been bitchy about Numan in the press or > something. I think his animosity may stem from the 'Fade to Grey' single. My memory may be failing a bit now, but I seem to remember when it came out that GN said that Chris Payne had written the main riff of 'FtG' while on they where on tour in '79. Billy Currie was also playing keyboards on the same tour and 'borrowed' the tune. The next thing that happens is FtG is released (Currie was involved in Visage), and possibly this upset CP and GN. All this may of course be completely wrong, but I'm sure some of it is factual. -Ian IJP Loving you was like loving the dead ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 7 May 1994 17:28:33 -0600 From: bhammond@diana.cair.du.edu (BRIAN D. Really nothing too new to report excpet that it was mentioned that the atmospheric album was to released in June and that most of the instrumental music for it has now been recorded. Where this information came from in unkown Given all the delays in this album, I'll believe it when I see it. The club is also selling copies of The Shadowman video for those who'd like a copy. But as I read and the more I got into Gary Numan, the more questions I developed. So I figured now would be a good time get some answers. First, however, I'll give a rundown of my history pertaining to my obcession with Gary Numan's music. It was the summer of 1990 and I was driving with my (now) exgirlfriend listening to the local pop radio station, when suddenly I heard a song that totally perked my ears. Being a huge DEVO fan I was convinced that it was some wierd (woops) DEVO song that I have never heard, but as the song went on I realized that this was no DEVO song and that I had to find out who the hell sang it. As usual the DJ did not say who's song it was so I quickly (I shit you not) pulled the car over to the nearest public phone, called up the station and found out that the song was none other than "Cars" by some guy I had never heard of named Gary Numan. Being sort of trapped in a small town at that time I could not get to a decent record store and thus could find no evidence that this Gary Numan had anything out...I thought this guy was just a one hit wonder (like the Vapors). It wasn't until a year later when I was going out with a female who worked at a pretty decent record store that I came across "Gary Numan....The Collection" Great stuff, but was this all he had out? I still could find nothing more. Then, in the fall of 1993 I went to chicago and found "I Assasin" and "The Pleasure Principal" and "Telekon" on tape.....I nearly shit when I saw that this Gary Numan actually had 3 tapes out! It was then that I really started digging for other possible stuff and since the fall of 1993 I have been able to obtain this selection: Telekon Pleasure Principal I Assasin The Plan Replica The Fury Dance The Skin Mechanic White Noise The Two Sides of Gary Numan New Anger Machine and Soul Outland RadioHeart (an interview picture disk) I apologize for not putting them in any order, but I have a hard time keeping in my mind what came when because I basically bought them all at the same time....Unfortunately I haven't been following him since '79 which seems to be the prevalent trend. Knowing the selection I have to hear from, I have these questions to ask. There seems to be 3 major "Musical Era's" Gary goes through...The Punkish Plan and Replica's....The heavy synth Pleasure Principle/telekon etc. and the newest stuff which I have no name for (except for maybe "notsogood") My first question is in what album did he start doing the stuff thats on The Fury/Outland etc.?\ Question 2) Is there an Ftp site or something that I can get a discography? question 3) Is there generally a greater amount of gary stuff that can be obtained in the UK? Question 4) Has anyone ever done a Gary Numan cover without G.N on vocals? >>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>> Thanks in advance for any answered questions and sorry for the long posting.....In a month or so (After really listening to all his stuff) I will post a top 20.
