So I'll try and cover as many as I can remember. List for Berserker CDs ---------------------- Really there isn't one. Berserker CDs were available via myself from the UK Fan Club for a very limited time only. After the pressing run ran out I started a list for those wanting it but only got one or two responses. The Fan Club has said they will not be making another pressing run (booo) so we'll have to hope an independent reissue label picks it up. I'm sure the news will get to the Digest very quickly if that happens. I Die; You Die -------------- Did someone ask what album this originally came from? Well there is not an easy answer. It was not on any UK studio album LP, but it did appear on the cassette release of Telekon. I believe it was on the US LP release of Telekon. It was a big surprise for both this and We Are Glass to be missing from the subsequent LP. Still, it reached number 1 in the UK album chart in Sept 1980. > Date: Sat, 7 May 1994 17:28:33 -0600 > From: bhammond@diana.cair.du.edu (BRIAN D. Club address is: > NAGNFC > 165 Enfield Center Rd, East. > Thaca, NY > 14850 - 9280 USA I assume that should be Ithaca. I would advise people who might be tempted to get a copy of Shadowman from Jim Napier to wait a while and certainly not send any money. I know for certain that he does not have a stereo dub and also this is not an officially sanctioned source for the video. Jim is leaping before he looks, I'm afraid. > Date: Thu, 5 May 94 22:52:02 EDT > From: Genetic.Phlegm@um.cc.umich.edu > Subject: Questions > > There seems to be 3 major "Musical Era's" Gary goes through...The > Punkish Plan and Replica's....The heavy synth Pleasure Principle/telekon etc. > and the newest stuff which I have no name for (except for maybe "notsogood") > My first question is in what album did he start doing the stuff thats > on The Fury/Outland etc.?\ Gary's music changed from album to album in his earlier years but it has not done so since the mid 80s. Many think the beginning of the phase you ask about was Berserker, his 1984 album. It was on this album he started using programmed rhythms. I personally like this album a lot. The Fury was a big let down in 1985. It took the programming further (The Wave Team) and was very sterile compared to previous work. Strange Charm (1986) was a mixed album with some of the flaws of the Fury continued. Metal Rhythm ( New Anger outside the UK) was a shift toward guitar. This was his first album fro IRS records. The second album for them, Outland, saw Gary pushed to a more dancey sound by the Record company, so the story goes. The break up with IRS allowed Gary to do his own thing again. However, Machine and Soul is not too far removed from Outland although it is a distinct improvement. Hope that helps. > Question 2) Is there an Ftp site or something that I can get a discography? Yes, ftp cs.uwp.edu and search for the public/music/discographies/n/numan entry (it may be a slightly different pathway than this). The file is over 95K so be warned. > question 3) Is there generally a greater amount of gary stuff that can > be obtained in the UK? Of course. Gary has no current US recording or distribution deal. His albums have all been released in teh Uk either on Beggars Banquet, Numa Some independent labels have released compilations like Collection and The Other Side of Gary Numan. A decent import store should be able to get hold of any currently available title. > Question 4) Has anyone ever done a Gary Numan cover without G.N on vocals? Yes. Someone had a list. Mainly covers of Cars. I know the Judybats did one! > Date: Sun, 1 May 1994 16:19:50 -0400 (EDT) > From: bubble sorter > Subject: scar, you say? > To: numan@cs.uwp.edu > > a new studio album by gary numan? to be released before november? > is it going to make it to the states? i'd really like to know > more about this... It probably will get to US stores that stock imports :-) Gary is apparently negotiating with a British independent label. The next album could be on that label. It is definitely due to be released before his November Uk Tour. That about does it. Bye for now, Derek ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. HAMMOND) Subject: Dadadrek..... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I never thought I'd ever be saying this, but I can't wait for Numan to release Vicious..err....Scar...err....Whatever. After this latest of collaborative efforts, anything Numan does by himself *has* to sound better. I got my copies (the single appears as two volumes) on 14 May 1994 and have played them twice in that time. I'll defer on the detailed review to those who write them better than I and just provide that fact ma'am.... Volume 1: Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) radio version 3.54 Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) extended version 5.35 Like A refugee (I Won't Cry) acoustic version 4.53 volume 2: Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) radio mix 3.54 Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) pandemonium mix 4.37 Like A Refugee (I Won't Cry) instrumental mix 5.25 Machine And Soul (live) 7.00 I thought there was something strikingly familiar with this blatant attempt at a "top 40" sound but couldn't quite place it until I looked at the "credits" and saw the reason why. This song was written and produced by Hugh and David Nicholson-- that dynamic duo of Radio Heart fame (yes, they are the ones responsible for all those memorable songs from that great album). I wonder if Dadadang is as contrived as Radio Heart was... This song is dull and the lyrics insipidly stupid (the repetitive Sha na na might be the Nicholson bros. idea of a song hook, for me its the sign of a vacuous mind) If there's a difference between the "radio version" and the "radio mix", please point it out to me. My only thought when I saw the "extended version" was "oh goody..." Strangely, only the acoustic version had any appeal for me although it could have been that I had been brainwashed by this track. The Pandemonium mix was so wild, it made me want to smash up my place like in college...god what a rebellious mix (saracasm). Just like the Radio Heart instrumental mix, this instrumental mix really only means everything is the same (including the backing vocalists) sans Numan himself. Lastly, the Machine And Soul track was uninspiring and not worth the effort after suffering through the rest. Numan graces the cover of both these volumes creating the impression that it's a Numan single. I laugh and cry at the poor fools who buy this thinking that's the case here. Avoid this. Me! Unlike the 2on1 CD's that | BB released some time ago, *ALL* of the original tracks are included. I'm curious, which tracks are missing on the 2 in 1's? They seem pretty complete to me; i.e. all the album tracks I had on vinyl are on them. I'd like them to release Living Ornaments on CD, though. The Living Ornaments version of "Everyday I Die" is the most glaring omission, for me, on the 2-in-1's. To my great joy and surprise, I found all 4 2-in-1 sets at HMV here in Montreal. Needless to say, I bought them all. If you think 80$ for 4 CDs is good, try 115$ for 8. (Cdn, taxes included.) The only extra track you mentioned which is not on the 2 in 1's is: | We Take Mystery (To Bed) - Extended Version And frankly, I think I'll live without it. :-) Charles -- ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 17 May 1994 01:42:46 -0400 From: Erik Scott Ferlanti Subject: Record collection for sale To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I'm posting this for a friend a mine, He has a *humongous* Numan collection on vinyl.
