I've gotten very tired of people saying, "Gary Numan? Didn't he do that song, 'Short People'?" ( And then there's that other question, "What else did he do besides 'Cars'?") "Like A Refugee"--I think the song and the arrangement are pleasant but banal, in grand old pop tradition. Not especially interesting, but not bad (though personally I think the lyrics are pretty terrible). But I was impressed with the quality of the vocals. Numan's been singing largely in a semi-chant for so long (barring some live stuff, which is, IMO, generally the best feature of the live stuff) it's refreshing to hear some melody with his voice. --Ziggy Blum ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 5 Aug 1994 12:37:09 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Answers to last week's questions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A.J. Aranyosi asks: >Unfortunately, I never found Strange Charm >or Berserker on CD (which, after hearing other peoples' wish lists, >doesn't surprise me). I've collected a number of rare 12" singles, CD >singles, etc., but I since stopped buying LPs, so I never found a copy >of Berserker in any format (anyone know where I can get one?). Strange Charm had a brief CD release back in 1987 and has been scarce ever since. It pops up now and then in used stores or, as last happened, in cut-out bins at Sam Goodey stores (no idea where they got them). The Berserker CD was a UK Fan Club only release back in 1992. Until it sees general release you have little chance of ever finding one. As for vinyl or cassette, I think the UK club still has copies but getting them will be impossible until the official non-UK links to the UK club are set up. That is in process still. The vinyl still may be available in specialty stores. >Questions: I found 2 different copies of the Exhibition 2-CD set. One >of them, which I picked up in Canada, has "Change Your Mind", "No More >Lies", and "Voices" on it -- the other one (which says 'Made In England' >on the spine) doesn't. Why are there 2 versions of this collection? The Canadian version was released by Polygram, the UK by Beggars Banquet. I assume that the Sharpe and Numan tracks were included due to the big success of Change Your Mind in Canada. >Second, I just picked up a copy of "Here I Am", but it doesn't have any >release dates for any of the songs. I'm wondering about the songs "In A >Glass House", "Here I Am", "She Cries", "We Need It", and "London >Times". When were these released, and in association with what album >(if any)? In a Glass House was a b-side to the Emotion single. London Times was a track from the rare Radio Heart project, Here I Am and She Cries were b-sides to the My Dying Machine 12" (Berserker era) and We Need It was the b-side to Your Fascination (Fury era). >Comments: Like a Refugee: Is there a video for this song? A video was shot in Bergamo, Italy with Gary but I don't think it is available commercially. Cory Nyberg <73024.2004@compuserve.com> asks: >I do have a question. I heard talk about Berserker on CD but that it might >not have been around very long. True?? I would love to have that on CD. As stated above it was a very limited release and did not appear in the stores. Some of are lucky enough to have it but I had to go to the UK to get them from Gary's mother (I didn't go just for them though ;-) Unless Numa repress the CD it'll require an independent label picking up the rights and reissuing it for it to become easily obtained. That's it. Derek ----------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. What songs are included and what are the sources? I'm something of a Numan completist but if there's not much new I'll probably wait to buy it until I can get a really good deal on it. The only regular studio album I lack on cd is "Berserker." "J. I believe the original question was asking if the new BB releases have better sound quality than the Japanese "Asylum" disks. (Correct me if I'm wrong.) At this point I'd be happy for sound quality as good as the Asylum disks since I don't know if I'll ever find the one I don't have. :( Doug ------------------------------ Date: 31 Jul 94 16:51:30 EDT From: Cory Nyberg <73024.2004@compuserve.com> Subject: Numan list post To: Hello again, I think I got the name thing figured out on CompuServe so my name should appear as Cory Nyberg. Now, on to my post. There was a question of anyone having videos. I have the Berserker tour video, New Man Numan Best of video, and Micro Music the Wembley concert all on tape. The quality is ok, not as good as normal NTSC releases but good enough to watch. I would be willing to make copies (I have 2 VCR's) for anyone desiring one. I would only ask for enough green to cover the cost of a tape and mailing. Email me or post if you want one. Anyway, many people seem to be chiming in with which albums they like the best. I have to say the last few (Outland and Machine + Soul specifically) have been subpar. I never listen to Outland. Machine + Soul is OK but the sound or the songs are just off somehow. My favorites are, in order: Berserker, The Fury, Metal Rhythm (New Anger for the amateurs), Warriors and then the rest of the old stuff. One of the major crimes of this century is not releasing Berserker on CD, or at least my not having it :-) I just bought Here I Am and that damn Emotion song will not die. I do like the fact that they put some B-sides on there especially We Need It (from the Your Fascination single). This is one of my favorite B's. Why London Town and not Radio Heart or All Accross the Nation? London Town is good, but I'm rather fond of Radio Heart. I hate people who go on and on so I will close. It is really great to recieve this stuff week after week and good to know there are still some fans out there. I thought I was alone.
