To: numan@cs.uwp.edu This is for all of the people who have, or will express and interest in the Numan collection that I'm handling. I *am* getting all of your letters, and I'm not ignoring them, but I'm not going to be able to resond for about a week and a half as I am going home, and my folks don't have a computer. (but the do have running water now, so the computer is next!) The sale is first come first serve. I'm guessing that no-one is going to bid on the whole thing, so the pieces will be sold on a first serve basis. Make your specific requests and I'll get back to you on them. Please bear with me, I need this vacation!!!! Hi Derek! (I know that I still owe you a tape. You really will get it!) Shane ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 17 Aug 1994 18:51:21 -0600 From: "BRIAN D. HAMMOND" Subject: Dream Corrosion (The Live EP) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu For me, the sign of a good live album is determined by how interesting the songs on it have been interpreted. Albums that simply attempt to replicate the studio versions without adding anything new are a waste of money. At times the interpretation can be weak as well, as in _The Skin Mechanic_ which replaced interesting with loud bursts of noise. When I heard that Numan was going to be releasing yet another live album this year my initial thought was, "Yippee, another version of "We Are Glass" (to be read with sarcasam. To all of those here who have labelled me as one of those grumpy "Numan hasn't done anything good in 10 years" types (an unfair accusation), hopefully you will pleased to know that I do approve of this live EP. It satisfies three immediate concerns: (1) "Emotion" isn't on it. Yes, it's true Toto, it really isn't. (2) the interpretations vary but by and large are good. (3) the songs themselves are fresh ones that have not been played live on all the other live albums. In fact those songs are: Noise Noise.................4.00 I'm An Agent.................3.54 It Must Have Been Years......4.20 Jo The Waiter................2.48 TPT..........16.01 Noise Noise: This comes across very well. The synths and guitars combined to form a rather meanacing sound and Numan's vocals sound genuinely angry. This was a great version that was quite different from the studio one. Good track. It Must Have Been Year: This one tried to play more closely to the original but not at quite the same pace. It was a little slower than the studio version but this was understandable given that Numan was trying to play a punky song from 1978 at the age of 36. The backing vocals was okay, but thnakfully Kipper's guitar solo complemented the song instead of upstaging it like his playing usually does. I'm An Agent: This one starts out with a dance beat that bears no resemblance to the studio version. The transition from this dance beat to the actual song at the beginning and end was a little awkward, but not horrible. The Telekon sounding synths was wonderful. Not the best track on here, but not bad either. Jo The Waiter: Tied with Noise Noise for the best on the EP. For those who wanted to hear a "Numan Unplugged" this will be the closest you'll get. The first stanze of the song is just Numan and his guitar. The audience participation was pretty neat too and gave the song a fun feel to it. Not bad. The packaging was pretty good with some decent pictures and relevant info. on who played what during the tour. If the actual full LP is going to feature rarely played live tracks like these on it, my somewhat weak interest in it will increase dramatically. The only negatives on this CD are: (1) sound quality is far inferior to that of _White Noise_. It's okay but not outstanding. (2) A minor gripe here is that each song is faded down and up rather than throwing some connecting crowd noise in. I like the continous sound better as it makes it sound like a complete concert and if I want to record one track, I can fade down the crowd on my own. I do recommend this CD. Not great but pretty darn good. Me! I Disconnect From You ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 16 Aug 1994 18:48:44 -0700 From: bensonj@teleport.com (J. LeRoy) Subject: Dream Corrosion EP To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Looks like Gary was reading the list and sent some of us a treat. The best thing for me is the version of Jo the Waiter, which I listened to over my lunch hour and it filled me with joy for the rest of the afternoon. Well mixed, well produced, this EP has: Noise Noise It Must Have Been Years I'm an Agent Jo the Waiter all live from the '93 Dream Corrosion tour. It's a Numa release (CD25). I got it for $8.99 here in Portland. The audience seemed equally happy to hear Jo the Waiter, incidentally. All four songs done well. Someone noted that the Dream Corrosion video was out. Was this just in England or has it been spotted in the states. I would be happy to own a copy of it. And what's "Nufederation"? ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 19 Aug 94 22:03:44 EDT From: MeadB@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #92 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Please remove MeadB from the Digest mailing list ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 Aug 94 19:29:14 EDT From: MidgeUre@aol.com Subject: More complaining To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi again folks, First off let me apologize to Cory Nyberg. Last issue I misquoted him saying: >Last issue someone wrote in and said that they considered >"Outland" to be "sub-par" in one sentence, then in the very next sentence >declared that they had never listened to it! As a fellow AOL member brought to my attention, I misunderstood him. What he said was that he never listens to it. A bit different, so please forgive me. But it does bring me to a new point in my personal (and somewhat lonely) quest to make the world believe that Gary Numan is still an excellent artist. I would probably be agreeing with people like Cory right now in saying that I didn't like "Outland" if I had stopped listenening to it after 1 or 2 listenings. The fact is, I hated most of it on first listen. But over the years I have learned that almost all of my favorite music I pretty much hated on first listening. Songs that appeal to me right away generally don't have a lasting effect. It's probably a fuction of the "catch" - if they're catchy you like them right away but they wear thin real fast (i.e. most top 40 songs that you loved but can't even remember now). On the other hand, if they slowly grow on you and you work at really 'listening' to them, they tend to stay with you much longer. That's my theory anyway. So I urge you folks that gagged upon first hearing the Janet Jacksonesque strains of "Soul Protection" and "Confession" to pull out that dusty "Outland" disc (if you didn't get $2.50 for it at the cd exchange yet) and take a new listen to "My World Storm", "Dream Killer", "Heart" and "Whispers". In fact take 3 or 4 listens to them. Then you can put it back and either say, "Hey, this is alright after all" or "What a waste, that guy that recommended this is an idiot". At least I know you tried. Now for something completely different...since I'm new around here I don't know if this has been mentioned before, but...there are a couple of excellent sources for both domestic U.S. and import cd's on the Internet. The domestic online resource is called "The Compact Disc Connection" and can be reached by Telnetting to "cdconnection.com". The import version (which deals with mainly Japan, Holland and Germany it seems) is similarly reached by Telnetting to "cdeurope.com". You can search their entire catalog online, I've found prices to be quite reasonable and they accept Visa and Mastercard. I recently ordered "Dream Corrosion" double cd as well as "Dream Corrosion Live" cd single from them. (BTW, I am not affiliated with the company at all, just a satisfied customer). I can't complain though since I didn't post either. It's nice to see more new members. I do have to respond to Dave Carlson. He said last week that I said Outland was sub-par and in the very next sentence said that I had never listened to it. Maybe I was not as clear as I could have been. I HAVE listened to Outland, probably 40 or 50 times when it first came out back in '91. I was never that impressed with it, but being a Numan fan played the hell out of it anyway, since new product is becoming more and more scarce. What I meant was that when I feel the urge to listen to Numan I rarely (read: Never) listen to Outland. It's not that it is new, rather that I think he went in a direction that I don't particularly enjoy. Some one said that it was Numan meets Prince meets Janet Jackson and I thought that was a very apt observation. I don't want every one to think I am "flaming" back, I just want to set the record straight. No hard feelings, Dave? Some one a few weeks ago mentioned a recent concert film that has been released in England but needed to be transferred to NTSC for everyone here in USA. I can't do the transferring but would be extremely interested in obtaining a copy. No Dream Corrosion here in L.A. this weekend. Will try next. Later. The sleeve is in pretty good condition, only very slight scuffs at the extremities, certainly not showing its age - seventeen years! The vinyl seems virtually unplayed - thanks to one of those high quality plastic lined inner sleeves. The reason I mention it is that it's the first copy I've seen for less than about 50 pounds in the UK. Is anybody out there interested? I can pick it up and mail it on for sale or trade. FYI, this is a very limited edition of the first NUMAN LP - as TUBEWAY ARMY - in a completely different GF sleeve on BLUE VINYL. Of course, someone else may have spotted it by the time I get back ...
