We'd appreciate you taking the time to read this message and respond to the request for input. It would seem that the number of subscribers to the Gary Numan Digest has expanded considerably this summer. So much so that the weekly digests are now quite healthy. As a result and as we approach the second anniversary of the GND perhaps it is a good time to look to the future. But first, some history.... This list had its origins back when the Asylum sets from Japan were released. in the spring of 1990. Dave Datta posted about them to rec.music.misc. First, I was excited to see a post about Gary Numan but also to hear of a comprehensive release of Gary's Beggar's Banquet catalogue on CD, especially after the relative disappointment of the UK 2 albums on 1 CD with omissions releases. That got me thinking about the unreleased Numa albums at that time - Berserker, White Noise and Ghost. After consulting with Dave I put out a general request for electronic co-signers of a letter that I was sending to Tony Webb, Gary's father and business manager for Numa. I think I got close to 30 names. The list of email addresses became an alias file on my account that I used to inform the co-signers of what Tony said in reply. I also started to use the list for informing people of news, releases etc. Soon I became the distributor of "Numanews" - an electronic newsletter devoted to the discussion of Gary. It came out approximately monthly unless there was something newsworthy to distribute. With the help of Paul Green's "Noise Noise" cassette fanzine and eventually direct phone calls to Beryl Webb (Gary's mother who runs the UK Fan Club), "Numanews" became what I think was the best source of info on Gary on the Internet. In the spring of 1992, I found the work involved in editing messages and putting them together becoming too much. After discussion with the subscribers we went to automation with me acting as moderator and Dave Datta handling the subcription requests and operation of the software. The Gary Numan Digest was born. Things went well until May of 1993 when I was forced to give up my moderator's post due to my first born son's diagnosis with what proved to be a fatal brain cancer. In the summer of 1993 the Gary Numan Digest became a fully automated, unmoderated concern. And I think it has worked very well. The future..... Despite its success a weekly digest has its problems. It takes a long time to get questions answered and makes a discussion or conversation difficult. Subscribers may forget to respond or feel reluctant to do so. I suspect a weekly format discourages posts. For these reasons and also, according to Dave, for easier operation, we could have the Digest transformed into a new format. The possibilites: 1. A daily digest. This would operate like the weekly digest but would come out daily rather than weekly. You would receive one Digest email each day. Advantages: Quicker response times to questions, quicker dissemination of info, more incentive to post, increased likelihood of genuine discussion. Disadvatages: creates one more email for everyone to deal with each day, there may not be enough traffic to warrant this. 2. A reflector. Each post is reflected from the cs.uwp.edu site to all subscribers to the list. This means everyone would get the post almost immediately but you would receive an email for every post. Many other mailing lists operate in this fashion. Advantages: Immediate dissemination of info, potentially very quick response times, easy to ask quick questions, discussions can take place quite easily. Disadvantages : some people are not allowed to subscribe to reflector lists, if traffic becomes heavy mailbox gets flooded with messages, there's a tendency for traffic to deteriorate into personal replies that are more suited to email than general distribution (has happened on most reflector lists I have ever subscribed to). It may be possible to do one or the other so that you could subscribe to either a daily digest or reflector which ever you prefer or are allowed to receive. A third possibility..... This would have to be done by someone else - a newsgroup - alt.music.numan This has all of the advantages of the aforementioned set-ups and few of the drawbacks. You could choose whether to subscribe or read the newsgroup and nothing is foisted upon you or your email account. It would require someone with the knowledge and access to do this though (i.e. be a sysadmin or have a sysadmin who would allow their machine to be the node that distributes the group to the Usenet). I don't think we have enough support to satisfy the requirements for a fully fledged newsgroup i.e rec.music.numan. I realise this could be a problem for some like those on aol where news feed is less than consistant or for those who do not have a newsserver. So, how do we proceed? I am willing to act as collator of responses. Things you might want to think about include: - should we change the format at all? - are there any formats you could not receive? - if it does change, what would be best for you? Please email me with your thoughts. Use "digest future" as the subject so I can keep all responses in a separate file. I'll summarize to the Digest in a couple of weeks. Then we can see better if there's any point in changing things. *PLEASE* do not send your response to the Digest i.e. don't just hit "r" to reply - you'll have to mail me personally. After I have summarized people's thoughts we can discuss things openly in the Digest. Any proposed changes will be put to a vote. Remember direct your comments to me at dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu with the subject line "digest future". Can any >one track down the first releases of either of these songs? I have "I Don't Believe" as the B-side of "New Anger" on a 7" 45 that came in a rather nice fold-open poster/cover (I'm a total sucker for such things) on Illegal Records label. I can hunt it up for more information if anyone wants it (I'm somewhat in disorder at the moment). I like Metal Rhythm, especially "Respect" and "Hunger," but occasionally I think "I Don't Believe" would really have added a nice touch to the album--it's a very catchy tune. I'd also like to know the origin of "Shame," though. Ziggy Blum ------------------------------------- "I've connections with God. What do you need?" --G. It originally appeared in 1991 only on limited pressing red vinyl 7" singles. It was the B-side to Heart. (2) I Don't Believe originally appeared as one of the B-sides to the New Anger single. The original CD single was one of those cardboard sleeved types and is now quite hard to find. It is a great song, better than the A-side IMO. (3) I saw Speed last week. Cars 93 Sprint is not in the movie. There are two soundtracks out for the film. One is simply the movie score. The other features a few songs that did appear in the movie plus a few others that were included because they were "Inspired by the Motion Pictured." On this soudtrack version Cars 93 Sprint does indeed appear. This is available in both CD and MC. (4) Terry, I believe you misunderstood me when I said Scar and Vicious were out. I did not mean they had been released, I was refering to the fact that Numan's next album (whenver it comes out), has gone through a number of name changes. First it was to be called Vicious, then Scar. Now it appears it will be called Sacrifice. When I said Vicious and Scar were out, I meant they were no longer working titles for his next album. Me! Since then it has been rereleased twice in remixed form back in 1987 to promote the "Exhibition" compilation and in 1993 to promote the "Best of Gary Numan 1978-1983" release. Unfortuntely neither remix enjoyed the success of the original mix. I remember back in 1979 there being a controversy in the UK about hits being hyped to number 1 without actually selling the number of records they had reportedly sold. "Cars" was one of the records cited. Anyone know further details? I'm now 22, have my math degree, computer tech job at a hospital in Victoria, BC, Canada. In university I spent a year as music director of CFUV the campus radio station, following up on my then- enthusiasm for "alternative" music, emphasis on metal and hardcore. I now play clarinet in a band, Mexican Power Authority, very experimental, sort of grindcore/freejazz/punk/big rock. In the interest of natural diversity I brought my Numan allegiance into the fold and suggested we either cover Cars, or The Machmen. The other guys knew Cars so we're presently polishing that one up, with me playing the main synth parts on the clarinet, through a phaser aspect of my Zoom 9000 digital effects box. Being the age I am I was not exposed to any Numan in his golden years of 79-80, I have only discovered these albums as of the last three years along with other 70's- 80's favourites like Devo. I thought I heard a rumour that Gary had been putting out tunes since those days on an obscure label, and as I was combing the net looking for more clues I hit upon this list. I'd deeply appreciate a copy of a complete Numan discography so's I can set about collecting it all! Looking forward to further enlightenment. That's David Torn, Mick Karn, and Terry Bozzio. In the little blurb it said: Terry Bozzio (Missing Persons), Mick Karn (Japan, Gary Numan)... Didn't mention Dali's Car or his solo stuff or the myriad of other people that he's worked with. So I thought I would mention it. Not earth shattering, just refreshing. Incidentally, the concert was incredible. Karn, Torn, and Bozzio and ungodly talented people. Songs would end and the audience would generally say, "Wow." Then applaud. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
