To: numan@cs.uwp.edu hey numanoids! okay, so, 8 people have sent me notice that they were interested in buying berserker, and often they were interested in buying more than one copy. are there any folks left out there who haven't mailed in yet? i'd love to show beryl that at least our list has great interest in it... given that that disc apparently made the top ten "please re-press on CD" list (see below), i'd think there must be others out there as well! please mail to me if you haven't mailed to me yet and, again, if you HAVE THE SLIGHTEST FLICKER OF INTEREST IN SEEING _BERSERKER_ ON CD AGAIN. thanks! here's that article: -- >From gajarsky@pilot.njin.net Fri Oct 21 10:21:44 EDT 1994 Article: 4422 of rec.music.info Subject: INFO: SURVEY RESULTS - 1980's songs on cd. Date: 20 Oct 1994 23:29:42 -0600 Several weeks ago, Consumable Online sent out a poll across the Internet to determine what singles and albums, you would most like to see released on CD. We've tried to eliminate choices which are available on U.S. compilations, although it's impossible to attain 100% accuracy. [snip] In addition, Men Without Hats notched two of our most requested albums. One is for their never-issued greatest hits; the other for the scarce _Rhythm of Youth_, which had a pressing of only a few hundred discs (in Europe) and commands prices of $150-$350, when they change hands. MCA is planning on reissuing this disc in early 1995, so fans might take note of that. However, without further ado, here are the top ten requested albums, in order: Soundtrack, Ferris Bueller's Day Off (never issued) Men Without Hats, Greatest Hits (never issued) Men Without Hats, Rhythm of Youth Hooters, Amore (Antenna, 1983) Wire Train, In A Chamber (415 Music/Columbia) Ebn-Ozn, Feeling Cavalier Duran Duran, 12" Mixes/B Sides (never issued) >>>> Gary Numan - Berserker (Numa, 1984) Pet Shop Boys, 12" Mixes/B Sides (never issued) Endgames, Building Beauty -- let me hear your interest, numanoids! thanks again. -gts/uwiz ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Oct 1994 16:48:44 -0700 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: From last week...... When I spoke with Beryl about this many moons ago (before they announced there would not be a repressing) she said they needed 500 potential sales. There's no way you'll get that from this group. I assume she came up well short on the 500 from the UK Fan Club and it was that that caused the repressing to be shelved. If I had known that the Berserker CD would have a limited availability I would have obtained more when I initally acquired them for people on the list. 20/20 hindsight etc...... >considering writeable CD and dat... What I am hoping is that an independent label will pick up the rights and reissue it. Bob Gajarksy, who distributes an alternative music newsletter, recently requested suggestions for 80s albums that people would like to see on CD so that he could give the list to Carl Caprioglio, head of Oglio Records, whom he was planning to interview. I suspect many of us responded because Berserker was #8 on the list. I am sure Gary would like to see his Numa material issued in the USA and a commercial release would make Berserker available to all those who missed the very restricted initial CD release. If this came about, I would expect Oglio to put b-sides on as well as they have done with other reissues. This would make it attractive to those who have the original CD release. One can only dream about it at this point but at least Oglio knows about the desire to have it released. Date: Tue, 11 Oct 1994 11:08:17 -0600 From: "BRIAN D. Tower Records had it for $16.49, Lou's Records in Encinitas CA had it for $16.99, Blockbuster Music had it for $17.99, all a lot less than the $24 you quoted. Even CD Europe, our less than trustworthy net source had it for under $18. Got my copy a couple of Days ago - certainly a compilation of two halves. (although made > me a little wary because of all the dark, negative images) I've heard people argue that 'Jo the Waiter' is about a woman, since it's spelled 'Jo' not 'Joe'. This strikes me as ridiculous; if so, the song should be called 'Jo the Waitress'. If it were just this one song I might agree there is a degree of ambiguity, but consider 'Friends', 'Didn't I say I'm not one of you', etc. > I was glad to find out that Gary is due to play at the G.A.Y. nightclub at > the LA2 in November - I'll be there and Im so glad to know that all his > gay-friendly early lyrics were more than just words... It sounds like it's something he's not consistant about. Think of 'The Rhythm of the Evening'- "These boys of passion are nothing more than faggots." --Sean ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 16 Oct 1994 14:36:47 -0400 From: MidgeUre@aol.com Subject: Scar To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Having just recently acquired a copy of the song "Scar", I thought I'd put my two cents in about it. The lyrics were posted on the last digest, so I'll not repeat them here. Well...the first thing that hit me when I listened to the song was, "Where are the synthesizers?"! That's right, aside from the traditional lilting synthesizer intro and a nominal background portion, this song is almost entirely done without keyboards. It's driven by a blaring electric-guitar and, more surprisingly, a predominant *acoustic* drum kit! (How long has it been, anyway?) The sound of the piece is, dare I say, much more "alternative", as opposed to the dance/pop sound we've gotten over the last few years. Not really being into alternative music too much, I can't really make an accurate comparison to a well-known group, but it struck me that it sounds much like some stuff I've heard by the Sisters of Mercy. I'm almost afraid to see what his new image is going to be for this album, he's already into the leather mode, seems like he'll have to bump it up another notch for this style of music ("Gary Numan dog-collars only 5 pounds, step right up!"). Now, do I like the song? Well, not yet. And that's a good sign, since nothing I ever like on the first couple of listens ends up pleasing me for very long. As you can tell by the lyrics, it's definately a Numan song, full of Numanouns like "opinion", "miracle", "nostalgia", "ghost", "friend", "corruption", "emotion", etc. (Somebody should compile a list of these babies.) I personally don't mind Gary's constant use of these lyrics, but if you do, your eyes will roll at "Scar". BTW, someone asked last issue if "Dream Corrosion" was available at US stores. In the midwest, the discount electronics/appliance store Best Buy is carrying it. I've spotted it at a couple of Chicagoland locations. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Does anyone have the definitive scoop on what 'This Wreckage' is about? I've always taken it as a kind of declaration of athiesm, but it's hard to interpret. I remember when I first found out that 'Mean Street' was the name of a band that had kicked Gary out early in his career. Suddenly that song was crystal clear. I had always liked it, but now I knew what the events were that he was writing about. I wish I could have a similar revelation about 'This Wreckage'; this has always been one of my favorite songs by Gary. --Sean ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 21 Oct 1994 13:00:40 -0600 From: "BRIAN D. HAMMOND" Subject: The "A Question Of Faith" CD single To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Paul Mayer got his copy of the "A Question Of Faith" CD single today. So much for Beryl's message that the single and album had been delayed two weeks. I only heard a brief snippet of each song over the phone, so I'll save the review until next week when my copy should arrive (Wednesday I hope). I will say this, however, my initial reaction is positive! Track listing: A Question Of Faith (Agnositc Edit) 3.45 Play Like God 6.55 Whisper Of Truth 4.21 A Question Of Faith (Devout Edit) 8.43 Track 3 is a ballad in the style of "Whisper" and "Love Isolation" sans the fmeale vocals. "Play Like God" has lots of guitars. The single itself does have a dark feel but still retains some dance elements so don't expect the Sisters of Mercy here. Me!
