Gary started the 2 hour set with new UK single "A Question Of Faith", easily one of his best songs of all time. The set list ws interesting...He played most of the new LP, and aprt from the new stuff, and "The Hunter" from Berserker, all the material was from 1981 or before... Some of the surprise tracks he played were Mean Street Praying To The Aliens Replicas Do You Need The Service ? Im An Agent Listen To The Sirens Friends Everyday I Die The Dream Police Jo The Waiter (which will no doubt get huge applause when he plays at the Gay night at the LA2 on the 12th November!, which Ill tell you all about next week) There was a funny moment when Gary strapped on his guitar, the lights went down, and there was silence for about 30 seconds...the lights came back up and Gary laughed and saidf "Sorry, it's me to start this one, I was waiting for someone else to start", before launching into "Friends" A nice touch, 10 years after Paul Gardiner's death was the inclusion of "Stormtrooper In Drag" which Gary dedicated to him. There were 2 surprise omissions - no "Cars" and no "We Are Glass" (Thank God! - I hate that song, I was expecting him to end with it as usual...instead the closing song was "I'm An Agent") Gary seemed in quite a perky mood (but Gary, please don't wear your own T-shirt on stage - it's just not right !!), he didn't say much but seemed happy. The band were fine - the guitarist was terrible tho - looked like he'd just stepped from a dodgy '80s glam rock band...he's obviously studied his musical scales, and guitar posing a lot! The only other points to make are that the show was much improved without wailing, screeching women, but although the mix was spot on, the whole thing could have been louder. So finally Id say, it was a great gig, and even the ridiculous guitar player didnt spoil it for me (tho he came close!) Great choice of songs, and lets hope we can hear more old ones at the LA2 show next week ! Glad to see he's basically ignored his didgy late 80's, early '90's phase in favour of the spanking new and very old stuff. Fantastic! ------------------------------ Date: 9 Nov 94 18:04:48 EST From: "Kay Teel" Subject: Help! Sacrifice and DC needed To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Okay, I give up. I've combed NYC for Sacrifice and Dream Corrosion and have found zilch. (I'm a bit surprised, because HMV used to have quite a Numan selection. Perhaps someone bought them all up...) Anyway, if anyone out there is willing to do me a BIG favor and procure a copy of each for me, I will not only be very grateful, but I will of course pay for the CDs and postage & handling! Kind souls, please e-mail me with details. Interestingly enough I have just read a review (can't recall which UK monthly music mag it was in) but it got a rating of 6/10 which, for those of you that know Gary's current relationship with the music press over here, must surely rate as some sort of triumph. When does this album ship in the UK? I must buy it! - Joeo - ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 09 Nov 94 09:18:32 EST From: thx1138@angus.mystery.com (Scott Abfalter) Subject: Sacrafice, Dream Corrosion & The Plan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu As far as Gary Numan fandom goes this weekend has been one of the most exciting I have had ever. Now you all know how difficult it is to find his music at times. We have all hunted for titles to no avail. I go into a record shop (Off the Record in Royal Oak, MI USA) and there in the N's is a section for Gary Numan just FILLED with his stuff. I stood there is shock for a moment then started leafing thru. Yes! 'Sacrafice' is there. I find myself elated, this is what I was looking for. Wait... what's this? Dream Corrosion? Here I am? And a whole slew of his older albumns in double CD's. I could not believe it. Never had I seen such a complete set of his work in one place! Oh, it was far from complete but it was a good chunk. So I bought Sacrafice. By the time I walked to the car I had convinced myself to go back in and get Dream Corrosion. What the hell, I figure. As long as I am blowing the budget I'll get Replica's/The Plan. My wife knows how it is with me and Numan music so she was very understanding! On to more comments: 'Sacrafice' Wow! It took about 1/2 a listen to make this my favorite albumn, which is odd for me because it usually takes a few listens before I even _like_ an albumn (I used to hate Dance...) [listen to me, the last of the vinal buyers, I can't stop saying albumn...] The lyrics were much better. Gone for the most part are the annoying backround vocals (I have always hated them with a passion , they have ruined many a Numan song for me. And sometimes I wondered if Gary was singing backround for them....) A Question of Faith is just incredible. This title goes a long, long way towards confirming my faith in Gary Numan. My hat is off to the man, he has made an excellent CD. (The author applauds...) Please, UK readers, let me know how the CD is received over there. As we all do, I'd like to see Gary get some of the recognition he so much deserves and Sacrafice is certainly good enough to get it for him. 'Dream Corrosion' Some very good live performances here (and some poor one, his heart certainly was not in You Are In My Vision...) Someone else mentioned Noise Noise earlier. What an unbelievable performance! I always kinda liked the song before. Now I can't stop listening to it. 'Replica's/The Plan' I have never seen The Plan before so I had to pick this up. I was not to into The Plan too much, but I only listened to it once. The Monday Troop is a nice little gem though. Running out of time. Could go on for hours. I am a happy fan! This is IMHO his best effort in a long time, probably since _Strange Charm_. The bad news was that the CD was $40 Canadian! Even though this was a great CD, and the exchange rate would've brought it to about $28, I'd really like to avoid paying that much if it's possible. So the question is: Is it possible to order the CD from Numa records directly? This might get Gary more of the $ anyway, which would be cool? -or- Is there somewhere else someone might recommend ordering it from -or- Would one of you nice chaps in the UK be able to get it and be interested in trading for something over here, new or rare? I suppose this could apply to those in the US who could get it cheaper as well?.. My email address is: jrmcclus@magnus.acs.ohio-state.edu Thanks! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Firstly, I think Sacrifice is one of Garys best for a long long time, and it has tracks which may well get airplay. (For me a big surprise was going into the shops and hearing the drum line and not recognising it as Numan... and going up to the counter and saying "What.." then some vocals came in and I said "I'll take it".... the man behind the counter took the CD off the player and another chap behind the counter dashed off to find the tape because he wanted to hear the rest of it....).... It is a very directed album. The drum lines are there as a driving force behind which old and new Numan sounds creep out. Even where there are backing vocals, they are handled with restraint and the lyrical content has widened out with some new imagery. Bad things? The two dreadful photos of Gary on the inside of the CD cover leaflet.... the rest of it is fine, but those two pictures... well they just ain't good.... Favourite Tracks? I can't pick one out; they all have great touches on them. "Walk in my Soul" does stand out for the emotion finally perculating back into the vocals and because of the positive lyrics about love rather than the "shit the bitch screwed me" kinda theme he'd been recycling.... Basically a great little album.... ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 7 Nov 94 18:28:25 PST From: jakubec@mprgate.mpr.ca (Trent J Jakubec) Subject: Sacrifice Still Forthcoming in Vancouver To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings: It is interesting to hear all the reviews coming through, as it has raised my interest in getting this album. I checked again with Zulu Records here in Vancouver, BC, Canada; but they have yet to receive the album. I sadly have to wait at least another week to hear this album. If anyone else has actually received it here I would like to know. They have a copy of DC (at ~Can$40) and the single, but I have been away and am not sure when these arrived in relation to the rest of you. I will review it as soon as I get a chance to hear it. HAMMOND" Subject: The Sacrifice LP To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Just got my copy of _Sacrifice_ LP the other day. The free 7" single was pretty good but nothing to get too excited about. Apparantly, Numa was unable to fit "The Seed Of A Lie" on the LP so they included the album version on side A of the 7" single. The B side has a longer version of the same song which clocks in at 7:07. It is my belief that when "the extended Sacrifice" CD is finally released (I can't wait!), this longer version will be on it. This is only a strong hunch so if you don't want to miss out on anything, you might want to pick up the LP with it's free 7" single. Me!
