I have been a Numan fan since June 1979 when I first heard 'Are 'Friends' Electric ?'. I have collected Numan recordings since that time, and go to see him live as often as finances allow (i.e. not often enough !). My other favourite bands are Nine Inch Nails, Bauhaus, Bowie, KMFDM, Killing Joke, Klute and The Sisters of Mercy. My favourite Numan albums are :- Replicas Dance Outland Sacrifice Favourite track is probably Jo the Waiter, though this changes fairly regularly. I saw Gary twice on the tour just completed (Hammersmith Apollo and Bristol Bierkellar), and it was the weirdest set I've heard him play. Tracks were ] either from the new album (any release Stateside?) or prior to 1984. A whole decade went missing. Still 'Listen to the Sirens' was excellent live, and 'Cars' was due to be rested, it probably should have been dropped some time ago. -ht.) Thanks for adding me to this list. When I first came to know about it I was really surprised as I couldn't imagine that such a list exists about an artist who's got virtually no airplay on the TV and radio stations I know. Here in Austria (I'm a student at the University of Technics in Vienna, Austria) it's especially the Austrian radio and TV stations and some satellite TV and radio stations (I'm watching MTV quite often and just one time, I guess it was in June, they played the 'Cars' video during 'Greatest Hits'). About myself: I'm 21 years old and, as I've mentioned before I'm a student (I'm studying Informatics in the 5th term). I got my email-address at the University some weeks ago (in other words I'm what you're calling a newbie). I've always been a fan of new wave music as it represents my childhood and in my opinion it's actually Gary Numan, who stands more than anyone else for the spirit of this music (although the changes he's made in his recent albums). As a fact, I've got to say, that I really know his entire work only for about half a year. I always loved songs like 'Are Friends Electric' and once there was the time when I simply got to know who wrote music like this. Since then I've been a big fan of Gary. Due to this, I've unfortunately never been to a concert of him. If you know if his 'Sacrifice'-Tour (I hope there is one) leads him somewhere to Austria, it would be great if you let me know. I've got quite a lot of favourite artists as I'm interested in many different kinds of music. My favourite genres are, as mentioned, New Wave but also Synthesizer/New Age, Industrial, Gothic, partly Heavy Metal, and 70's music. So some more of my favourite artists/groups are: Joy Division, Human League, Kraftwerk, Tangerine Dream, Vangelis, Jean-Michel Jarre, The Cure, Ministry, Front 242, Das Ich, Godflesh, Faith No More, Queen, Pink Floyd, Supertramp,..... I know, this doesn't seem to fit together, but these (and of course Gary Numan) are all favourites of me (each one in its own way). As I've always been strongly interested in music and making music, I'm playing piano and keyboards since 1984. Although I got piano lessons only from 1984 'til 1988, I'm still having big fun playing it myself and I guess it works even better today than it did then. These are things I got to tell you about me for the moment. Thanks once more for being added to the list. My name is ALEX CAVIEDES, and I'm working on my LLM (Masters in Law) at the University of Saarbruecken in Germany. I was really into "Pleasure Principle" (which my brother and I worship) and "Telekon", but since moving to the US we fell out of touch and have been scared to try anything new, as noone knows anything about GN besides that he "did that cars song". My favourite bands are Rush, Marillion, Big Country, ELO, and (strangely) the Cult. I used to play piano until I moved to the US in 1980, but am now limited to rudimentary chords and doodling on an out of tune acoustic guitar. Please feel free to fill me in as to his Bio and what directions his music has since taken as I am an amateur fan, but nevertheless full of enthusiasm. As requested: I became _aware_ that I was a Numan fan in 1981 after the Down in the Park video (live version) was played on MTV. I was first blown away by the stage, then the music, then by the fact that it was Gary Numan (the Cars guy?!?!). A friend and I bought and listened to the albums incessantly up through I, Assassin, when we were privileged enough to see that tour in a small New Jersey club right outside of Philadelphia. It was one of the best concerts I've seen. Having played Drums and Keyboards professionally since high school, my influences were mostly centered around the so-called _progressive_ bands such as Genesis, Yes, ELP, Jethro Tull, etc. After listening to several Numan albums, my tastes quickly widened. I have since found bands such as New Order, The Pet Shop Boys, and other synth/dance pop more toward my liking. I must confess that I do not enjoy Gary's new stuff as much as those Living Ornaments days, but I continue to buy the CD's each time they come to our local music stores. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- All comments/opinions in this message are solely those of the sender, and do not necessarily reflect the views of the employer. ------------------------------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 23 Nov 1994 15:27:42 +0100 (CET) From: alca@stud.uni-sb.de (Alexander Caviedes) Subject: Pleas. Princ. CD? To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Several times I have tried to order the out of print "Pleasure Principle" CD from the US - the most I ever got was that it should be possible to attain in Germany. Now I'm studying in Germany and the local chain has been trying to get the CD as an import from the US (go figure). All I know is that I love this album, and if anyone knows of any way I (or my bro' who lives in Gainesville, FL) can get a copy without having to steal (I will however beg, but borrowing isn't enough), I would be more than grateful and will sing your praises all over Internet (if that makes you happy). LeRoy) Subject: Sacrifice To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Writing to toss in my several cents for the Sacrifice CD. I couldn't even get my local CD store to acknowledge its existence, but then I went there and it was just sitting in the bin. So ... who knows? Anyway, I finally got it and have been able to listen to it on a good system and I must agree that it's the best since Warriors. And the cover art is equally good. Previous Numan covers have been a bit cheesy. This one is very nice. Simon asked me what I thought of it and what the "deal" with it was. So here's a deal.... It's good. All the instrumentation (well, most) is by Gary, which seems to make the songs a bit more introspective and less frenetic. I think that the dancenuman songs of recent years (last decade) have been because it's just plain more fun to play them live and more gratifying to see the audience bounce around. However, I've felt since New Anger that Gary was thinking about a soundtrack here and there. Sacrifice starts out with one of Gary's grumbly voiced sci-fi things. Introspective, dramatic -- I would have added some more high-end sounds into this, and the whole album, actually. The only thing about this album is that it is a real woofer heavy work. This isn't bad and the solid use if it is dramatic, but it sort of left half of the spectrum open and empty. The rest of the album goes from dancy and to not dancy -- but the dancable songs are very well done and have none of the TJ Davies / Tessa Niles screeching in the background (which is worth the $28 purchase price right there). One thing is that recent albums have had the word "God" in them a lot in a variety of ways. Does anyone have a clue as to what Gary's actual stance on religion is? A few years back I would have sworn he wasn't too big on the whole Jesus thing, but now I'm not so sure. He only says the word Hero once. Buy it now. ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
