The idea is to let him know that we like his new direction and to encourage him not to wander off into dance/funk again. My hope is that many of you will support what I have said enough to want to be co-signers. If anyone has any suggestion to improve it (it could be greatly improved with time) please email me. If you would like your name to be added to the bottom, please let me know. I won't be sending it off till the new year so there's no immediate hurry. I suspect many will be out of touch till then anyway. Happy holidays to all, Derek ------------------------------------------------------------------------- Dear Gary, We wish to congratulate you on your latest album, "SACRIFICE". Most of us are fans from your early days and have worried about your musical direction over the last 5 years but this album to us represents a spectacular return to form. Not only have you restored our faith but you have made us impatient for new releases. We can't wait to hear the extended mixes version of the album that we understand is in process. Not only is this album a collection of strong songs it is ordered in a masterful way that makes it your most coherent album in ages. Every song has unmistakeable Numan signatures, the chord progressions, synth usage, lyrics - elements that seemed missing or had gone astray on the last two albums. In particular we are impressed by the more serious style, the use of dark, haunting synthesizer sounds, the elimination of distracting female backing vocals and the dismissal of the idea to make music that might get radio play. This album stands out on its own and we think that word of mouth should make it a relative success. If this is what ignoring the BBC does for your music, we implore you to keep ignoring them. Your new approach and attitude have clearly re-energized your music. We hope it will bring back respect from serious music critics, if there are any. As far as we are concerned, you are back! We look forward to you exploring this vein in the future. Keep up the good work and thanks for restoring our faith! I just wanted to say that I hope that Gary Numan does come over to North America to play. Although I hope it would be in Canada, it seems more likely for him to play in the States. New York would be good compromise for the east coast (I live in Toronto), but what about the west coast? Anyway, two dates might work better, even for Numan. Don't forget us Canadian fans! \ Keith J. My selfish suggestion is MontreaI. Gary always had a good response in Montreal, for shows and airplay. HAMMOND" Subject: Numan Cover To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Paul Mayer alerted me to a rather obscure group (at least I beleive they are obscure or I've been out of it for too long) mentioned in the latest issue of AP (Alternative Press) Magazine (January 1995), who have just released a an EP with a cover of "My Shadow In Vain" on the B-side. Below is the copy from the magazine: JACK 'O' NUTS La Horne EP Low-fidelity bedroom recording from these miscreants that will appeal to people who use words like "onanistic" in regular conversation. The b-side is an impeccably raw cover of Gary Numan's "My Shadow In Vain" that totally validates Mr. Numan's stature in the underground. It is also the same song from which the Knack stole the bass line to write "My Sharona." Go, Jack 'O' Nuts, go! (Figurehead, 924 Sligh Blvd., Orlando FL 32806) Me! I suppose I was a little hasty in my assessment of the lack of interest in getting Gary over here to do a show for the stateside faithful. There are people out there who would travel great distances to see Gary play. To my friend from DC, I'm originally from DC and would gladly make an extra trip home to go see Gary. Anyhow I'm taking the suggestion of our friend in the UK and I'm writing the fan club. I will keep posting about the topic here in order to drum up more interest. Perhaps we could coordinate with this US fan club I heard something about once. If anyone has any information about that, please post it. If we could get a coordinated effort going it would be helpful. We need to find all the Numan fans in North America who would be willing to travel to see Gary play. Perhaps groups of people in the same city could travel together and save cash. Please post a note to me if you are interested in seeing Gary in the US, as I do not want to clog up the newsletter with a constant barrage of "noise, noise" on this topic. 'Listen to my voice. We are gathered here today to speak of things we have to do, and the friends we have to call...' Simon ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 14 Dec 1994 00:03:57 -0500 From: MidgeUre@aol.com Subject: Sacrifice Symbol To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The symbol on the cover of Sacrifice is known as a caduceus. Its historical origin is that it was the symbol associated with the god Hermes. I don't think Gary's too big into ancient mythology, but it does have another context which relates a bit more to the album. The symbol is also associated (without the wings) with a Biblical story. The story goes (any help from Biblical scholars would be appreciated here) that Moses and his followers were suffering from an outbreak of poisonous snakes (as some kind of punishment form God, I believe). The people prayed for relief and God instructed Moses to make a rod intertwined with a serpent. Anyone who looked upon the serpent/rod thing would be healed of the poison. This is how the symbol became associated with the medical field, I believe. This kind of fits in with the heavily religious tilt of the album. I'm only recalling this from Sunday school, so if I'm off the mark let me know. Also, does anyone have the official lyrics for Pray Like God and Whisper of Truth? These songs are amazing, even better than the ones on Sacrifice and that's saying something.
