Apparently the fan club wasn't able to sell all of the original pressing, and those left over were passed to Gary's usual Uk distrubutors, Pinnacle. However, according to a friend of mine who works in a local record shop (and GN fan club member), the Pinnacle rep has told him that they still have some in stock. With no guarentees anyone interested may want to try writing to :- Liam Newman, Spillers Records, 36, The Hayes, Cardiff, Cymru. UK. I've been working on a Numan WWW homepage for quite some time. If you would like to help (notably in producing lyrics for the page, scanning album covers, or writing some text [see below]) please let me know. My goal is to make the page a showcase of HTML non-interactive abilities. (I can't make it interactive due to the site that I will be storing the page on) So far, I've got the current discography entered and expanded into an MS-Access database, and I'm writing a program to convert from the database to automatically generated HTML pages. THINGS I'D LIKE TO GET FROM ANYONE WILLING TO HELP -------------------------------------------------- First things first: ALL CONTRIBUTORS GET NOTHING BUT CREDIT ON THE PAGE. o LYRICS - EMail me for a list of lyrics that I _have_. Anything not on the list needs to be typed in, or no more lyrics will be available. The bulk of the lyrics are from cs.uwp.edu, although they have been substantially reformatted to look "normal" in many cases (some were "stylistically" written, and needed to be "normalized"). o SCANS - I have over 40 Numan CDs, and originally was going to scan every CD cover. After discovering that Kinko's was going to charge over $150 for this service, I backed off of the idea. I've since given all of my covers to a friend to scan, but I'm dubious as to whether or not he'll come through. So, I am making a plea to the Internet Numan community - if you can send 96dpi GIF, JPG, TGA, BMP, PCX, IFF or RAS images to my mailbox, I'd really appreciate it. o SOUNDS - If anyone would like to provide .wav or .au snippets of songs or albums, they would also be greatly appreciated. Currently, there are no plans to include this on the first cut of the page, but if I receive any files, they will appear. Note that for copyright reasons, you should NOT send me a whole song. If you do, I will be forced to edit it. o TEXT - Anyone interested in combining some of the liner notes into a >newish< summary of Gary Numan's career, please do so, and send it. o REVIEWS - Songs or Albums: I don't have time to scour the net for song or album reviews -- or even time to collect all of the various reviews from this list. However, if anyone would like to put the list together (or even review an album themselves), I'd be more than happy to include them in the home page. Partial or complete text of album reviews from the printed media would be appreciated as well. o FAN CLUB INFO - Since I am not a member of any GN Fan club, even though I've written the New York and London fan clubs numerous times asking what I should do to become a fan club member, I'd appreciate any member wiriting up some information on how to get in the fanclub. I consistently receieve no reply from the fan club every time I drop them a line (even with a SASE). The current plan is to include the information that I have garnered from this list, although, I fully plan to include a disclaimer recounting my own horrid experience. o RELATED ARTISTS - Anyone who has the discography and who is an adventurous netsurfer is welcome to track down any net sites for related artists. If you want to do this and don't have the list, I'll be happy to provide the list. ==== Anyone with other ideas is welcome to send them my way. Sorry for not announcing this sooner, but, I've been delayed by current projects and workload. I am from London originally and came over to New York two years ago, bringing over my major collection of UK records and CD collection. I constantly kept looking for Numan items, but with no joy. I travel back every year to London to the Hammersmith Apollo for the concert (and to see my parents!) and was amazed to see some new music, the excellent album Sacrifice! Which I immediately bought, and I have now seen it in HMV here in Manhattan. I Introduce Myself To You To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello people, I would just like to introduce myself- I'm Ashley Pomeroy, born in 1976, a student at Plymouth University, Male, Caucasian. Too early to remember Numan's early period of fame, but late enough to view his work purely as music, and not a chart phenonenon. I am heavily into electronic music, from Jean Michel Jarre and Tangerine Dream to Enya and Philip Glass. I own a variety of synthesizers, old and new, and compose vast MIDI sequences as a hobby. I have been listening to Numan's music avidly since the late Eighties, when I saw a segment of 'Down In The Park' from one of his early tours on telly (It was part of a video being reviewed, entitled 'Punk and After'). The set was fantastic, and the music was incredible- a vast wall of synthesized sound, totally unlike anything I had heard before. I was utterly amazed, needless to say, and bought up as many of Gary's albums as I could find. In my vision, Gary Numan had a creative peak in 1979, and songs like 'Down in the Park', 'The Machman' and 'Complex' are genuine bona fide classics. I think that his later career has been pretty variable- I liked 'Outland' (although it wasn't very Numan-ish), I hated 'Machine and Soul'. My first impressions of 'Sacrifice' are that it is very good indeed, especially 'The Seed of a Lie'. Okay, that's it, there's nothing here but us. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 12 Jan 1995 14:47:07 -0500 From: MidgeUre@aol.com Subject: Medical symbol To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Last issue dlangs asked: >>Does anyone know, or would anyone like to speculate what the meaning of the medical symbol is in the graphics for "Sacrifice"?<< Well, despite being a known these days as a meducal symbol, this symbol actually has Biblical origins. Derek has said that he really doesn't have time to do it himself (right, Derek?), but if there's no-one else out there who really wants to do it, I suppose I could compile the list. In any case, it would be a collaborative effort between as many members of this list as possible (with the help of people who aren't on it), because I certainly don't have the answers to the questions. What it would require, at a minimum, would be: * Basic biographic information about Gary * Information and addresses for the Numan mailing list, Numa Records, fan clubs, and related organisations * Gary's musical history * Discography; chart listings * Listing of musicians Gary's worked with, and of related bands * Explanation of selected song lyrics (this could be difficult, mind you) * Facts about Gary (his aircraft, his hair transplant, his Macintosh, etc) * Information about past and future tours, and future musical plans If anyone's interested in providing information about the above, let me know. Please don't write to me on CompuServe unless you're fairly serious--it costs me quite a bit of money to receive Internet mail, but if you have something for me send it there. You can always use the Humboldt University address for mass mailings, unimportant mail, etc. Also... SEAN SMITH: Tell 'em about the old Apple ][ game "Tubeway." That would be one for the FAQ list! I was checking out CD's at the 2nd Time Around music store in Tacoma, WA, and came across OUTLAND. Someone had tampered with the price tag (really, it wasn't me)... it looked like they had possibly switched price tags... all I know is there's a perfectly good copy of OUTLAND for $2.99!!! So I walk up to the counter and says to the guy, "I gotta question for ya... what's the deal with this?" A cold sweat is breaking across my brow. He looks at the price, "Did you get it back there?" Indicating the 7.99/9.99 section. I says "Yes." He says "It's 7.99" of course... I thinks that is a steal, but I'm feeling a little rowdy... "..It looks like the sticker says twoooooo ninety-nine..." He looks at it a bit longer so then I says "I tell you what, let's strike a bargain and I'll get it for 5.99" He agrees. So I quickly make the exchange, and calmly, but somewhat swiftly exit the store... with a major steal of course! So chalk one up for the gipper folks, a rare moment in Numan buyer/seller history. -pablo ------------------------------------------------------------+--------------- + | + pablob@coopext.cahe.wsu.edu \|/ work: (206) 273-5911 fax: (206) 273-5914 <<<+-=|+|=-+>>> Confederated Tribes of the Chehalis Nation /|\ WSU Cooperative Extension, EIRP Telecommunications + | + ____________________________________________________________+_______________ ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 19 Jan 1995 16:35:14 -0800 (PST) From: david c carroll Subject: recent acquisitions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu while visiting my folks in Santa Fe, New Mexico, over the holidays, i had the opportunity to record shop in nearby Albuquerque (Page One books & records). not only did i find INEXPENSIVE copies of the Dream Corrosion and Sacrifice CDs (US$19.50 and US$15.60, respectively), but i was also quite fortunate to come across the Dream Corrosion vinyl triple-album for only US$20. but that's not even the best part. the vinyl album was, apparently, AUTOGRAPHED by Mr. Numan himself! right on the front in glorious ball-point pen. this made me wonder, how did a shop like that, which doesn't exactly cater to the import-vinyl-record-enthusiast, obtain an autographed copy of a Gary Numan album? a friend came up with the idea that perhaps Gary signs a number of items which are slated to be shipped stateside, and where those autographed items are then sent is anyone's guess. the luck of the draw. does anyone have any ideas about this? also spotted at the Page One store in Albuquerque: The Fury CD (used) for US$18, plus Isolate and other recent CD compilations. i was startled to find so many Numan goods in a place like Albuquerque, while i'm lucky to spot such items here in Seattle. perhaps it's because i've got more competition from other fans and collectors in this area. -- dave ''' david c carroll C-OO "big science. hallelujah" 3415 NE 57th St \ Seattle WA 98105 USA - carrolld@afsc.noaa.gov ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 15 Jan 1995 13:11:18 -0500 From: HossTNR@aol.com Subject: Sacrifice?
