GARY NUMAN DIGEST V1 #115 I'm A NUMANOID, and I don't care who knows it! Letter to Gary about Sacrifice II missing messages from vol 1 issue #113 ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sat, 28 Jan 1995 23:30:16 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: ADMINISTRIVIA To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello all, Digest problems --------------- I am hoping the problems we have had with the digest in recent weeks will soon come to and end. I informed Dave Datta of the problems and with luck they will be fixed. For the record, #111 did not appear when scheduled but was inserted into the middle of #112. #113 was cut short by certain gateways, and #114 was inserted into #115 after appearing the previous week. All issues are available via ftp from cs.uwp.edu in the pub/music/lists/ numan/digest directory (hope I have that right). I have posted the missing messages from #113 in this week's digest. A Reminder ---------- Please remember to email numan-request@cs.uwp.edu to change addresses or unsubscribe etc rather than sending it to the list. Dave does not always read the digest and thus may not get the message. UK Fan Club ----------- A couple of us are investigating the situation with Paul Bosanko who was chosen to run the North American branch of the official Gary Numan Fan Club. If any of you have heard from him recently please email me. I would advise not sending any orders or money to him unless you have recently had mail or spoken with him until it is clear what the situation is. That's about it for administrivia apart from personally welcoming all the recent new subscribers. I suspect we may be over 100 strong by now. And thanks to those taking on various tasks (i.e. the Berserker CD tally and preferred North American concert city, the Numan www home page). Great job! Oh, and Go Chargers! (although by the time many of you read this I expect then to have had their buts kicked :-). Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. I myself obtained an autographed copy of this album from my local record store, but the autograph was in black marker. Several weeks later I purchased another at a record convention and it was autographed in ball-point pen. The dealer told me that he was told that Gary had only signed 500 of these albums, but there are some that are not. Patton To: David Datta Subject: Re: I added you to the Numan mailing list Thank you for adding me to the Numan mailing list!!!!! My name is Joel Patton and I have been listening to Gary since I first saw him on Saturday Night Live (79?) Ever since then he has been the most important musician in my life. I have a collection of nearly 120 records, CD's, and video's. I find it difficult at times to put into words what his music means to me, I find it to almost be an "addiction". When I find something of his that I do not have (new or old) I seem to smile for at least a week. I wonder if other Numan Fans feel as I do, in that it is a virtual "quest" to try to find anything by Gary. Fortunately, there is a very cooperative music store where I live that understands my "need." I was also wondering if there have been any, or if there are any new releases other than "A Question of Faith" and "Sacrifice?" I am surprised that he only had one single for this album. He had 7 DIFFERENT singles for Machine and Soul, so did I miss something from Sacrifice? Again, thank you for adding me to the list, I am really looking foward to this experience. Joel Patton. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 24 Jan 1995 16:06:23 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Letter to Gary about Sacrifice II To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Sorry this is so late - I've had a very busy few weeks and I'm afraid that will continue for many months to come. Several people responded to my letter, the majority adding their name, but some had reasonable comments which I have taken on board and incorporated into the letter. I have eliminated the outright criticism of the last few albums in favour of just complementing "Sacrifice". The criticism is now implicit and towards the end for the letter, I hope the changes will make more of you sign on. It would be nice to have a majority of subscribers add their names. At the moment I know I am far short of that figure. So please, if you agree with what I have written below, please email me at dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu and put LETTER as the subject. Let's let Gary know he's back on the right track! Derek Here's the letter: Dear Gary, We wish to heartily congratulate you on your latest album, "SACRIFICE". Not only does this album bring together some of your strongest material ever, but it has been put together and ordered in a masterful way that makes it your most captivating album in a long time. Every song has unmistakeable Numan signatures: the chord progressions, synth usage, lyrics and vocals, that show your artistic strengths to their maximum. You have made us impatient for new releases. We can't wait to hear the extended mixes version of the album that we understand is in progress. In particular we are impressed by the more serious style and the use of dark, haunting synthesizer sounds. The elimination of female backing vocals has opened up the songs and fully exposed the Numan elements that are the reasons we enjoy your music. If this album is the result of dismissing the idea to make music that might get radio play, we urge you to continue doing so. This album stands out on its own and we think that word of mouth should make it a relative success. Your new approach and attitude have clearly re-energized your music. We hope it will bring back respect from serious music critics, if there are any. As far as we are concerned, you are back! Most of us are fans from your early days and many of us have been concerned with your musical direction over the last 5 years. This album represents a spectacular return to form and has dispelled those doubts. "Sacrifice" has surpassed our expectations. We look forward to the extended version of the album and your next album with great anticipation. Keep up the good work and thanks for restoring our faith! This is Trevor once again, giving the update on the Numan concert poll. Chicago:10 Boston:5 Wshington DC:5 SanFrancisco:4 New York City:4 These cities are far and away the favorites. Once again where are you from and to where would you be able to travel to see Gary play? Post to luket@yvax.byu.edu... By the way, there has been no response to my letter to the UK fan club ( big surprise ). Why don't we all write them to tell them we want Gary to come see us? Write to: Gary Numan Fan Club PO BOX 14 Staines, Middlesex TW19 5AU It's one thing for us to have our own poll, quite another for each of us to write to Gary individually. Personally I believe that the latter option will have more influence in the end. They may not respond to me personally, but when the mail starts to pile up, they'll have a more difficult time dismissing us. Don't you agree?
