If Gary's ever going to hang this letter up on his wall, it shouldn't contain jabs about his other work. As it is, it could be read as a back-handed compliment (although I know this is not at all the intent). Simply praising the hell out of Sacrifice will do, because the elements we don't like aren't in it anyway, and the fact that we think it's an outstanding album will tell him all he needs to know about what we prefer in his music. Take this out, and I'll be happy to join the roster. I've had this magazine since the late 80's, found it a local import/resale store. It contains interviews, pictures, discography, ads for Numan concerts, singles and the like. If I remember correctly I paid about twenty dollars for it at the time. It is 64 pages and is about Numan from the start till about the time of Warriors. Even though the discography at the end goes up to White Noise which is 1985. Now I do have some questions that I hope somebody can answer for me. On the back it says it is number 198 of 1000 copies. My question is does anyone else have this number copy also? Does anyone know if this book has any value? (no I'm not selling it just would like to know) There was a book mentioned in Exhibition, called Decade. Was this ever published and if so is it still available? If anyone out there could email me any replys I'd appreciate it. I was asked to provide some information about myself since I've been recently added to the list. 23 years old. Musician. Atlanta, Georgia. Gary Numan's music was my first introduction to synthesizers, and I've loved them ever since. I play keyboards and drums - mostly in a band called MONTAGE here in Atlanta. We've just finished the best demo ever created by a non-signed band, in my opinion! Anyone in the record business? I'd love to hook up with some people interested in making good music for people like me who love modern, danceable quality electronically-influenced music. I can't be the only one who would love to hear some good '80s stuff live! Anyone in the Atlanta area interested in starting a band? My other musical interest include Duran Duran, Yello, Thomas Dolby (probably now my number one musical influence), Devo, Art Of Noise, Seal, Depeche Mode, Nitzer Ebb, A-ha and Prince. Lately, I've rediscovered Numan as nostalgia (bought the White Noise double CD), but didn't realize there was still news. Does he still tour the U.S? Can it be?? I'd love to know what's going on! Thanks for adding me to the list! ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Feb 1995 09:13:12 -0800 (PST) From: atomic@netcom.com (atomic city) Subject: Machine + Soul Extended: The Next Iteration To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Numanews Mailing List) I just received a copy of Machine + Soul Extended from a fellow Numan list member; it turned out to be one of the bad ones. Let me describe what exactly I got, so that others can recognize this fault AND so I can learn if my disc is somehow different from other 'bad' discs.... The CD catalog number is CDX1009. It hs the same front and back cover photos as the original release, with the word "EXTENDED" added in small type under the title, and the 13 song titles listed on the back in neat, proper order rather than scattered about. The booklet is a 2x2panel foldout with a big photo of Gary on the inside and the same credits and thank-you message as before, but no lyrics. The CD itself lists all 13 tracks, with the extended lengths for the original nine and the regular lengths for the additional four. In other words, it is impossible to tell tht there is ANYTHING wrong by looking at the CD booklet, the jewelcase, or even at the CD itself. This is where I was mistaken earlier; I had thought that the CD silkscreening reflected the real track selection. The only way to see that anything is amiss is to actually put the CD in a player; it shows nine tracks and a total length of just over an hour. The bad CD has the extended mixes of all nine M+S tracks (they're very nice, BTW), but the four new tracks are missing. To repeat, there is no way that I know of to visually ascertain the condition of this disc; one MUST put the CD in a player and look at the total number of tracks. I am assuming this disc was sold to me in good faith by someone who didn't know any better, and I'm keeping it as a curiosity. I would, however, very much like to get my hands on a copy of the disc with all 13 tracks on it, if anyone knows where I can find one. After this experience, I am very leery of mailordering the disc, as I doubt the companies are willing to check them before shipment. As an amusing footnote, when I discovered the error my initial reaction was one of extreme disappointment and anger. My wife (who likes M+S and Sacrifice, referring to them (and anything before 1983) as "the Numan I can stomach") gave me 'the look' and said, "Whatcha gonna do, are you gonna break down and cry?" This had the effect of restoring both my sense of perspective and my good humor. my mirrors tarnished with 'no-help', mike -- mike metlay * atomic city * box 81175 pgh pa 15217-0675 * atomic@netcom.com --------------------------------------------------------------------------- "EMUSIC-L is for 'why is what and where does it fit in cosmologic sequences of electronic transcedence' no matter how often we digress."
