To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Before I go on I would like to say I still love this album and think it is one of his best ever. I would also say that it is his most listenable album at this time. However, I have come to realize it may have had an unpleasant side effect on me. Hypothesis: Numans's "Sacrifice" album may contribute to depression and self esteem mental health problems. Last fall and over the holidays I went through a personal crisis. I was depressed, very unproductive with respect to my Ph.D. work and highly stressed by financial worries. I almost gave up on my Ph.D. I listened to "Sacrfice" a lot because it seemed to sum up how I felt. It hit a chord in me that was dominating my outlook. Little seemed to matter, I felt vulnerable (I was still mourning the loss of my son in November 1993 to cancer) even scared at times, not knowing how I was going to get out of the rut in which I found myself. The album played a big role in taking what positive energy I felt I had. It was something to which I could relate. Luckily, things have changed and I am persuing my Ph.D. work with more vigour than for many months and my outlook is much better. I do think that "Sacrifice" played a part in keeping me down. Not only did it take up too much of my time (writing reviews, discsussing it with others etc) but it maintained a frame of mind due to it's content. Has anyone else experienced anything like this? I'm sure that I will put on this CD anytime I feel down and want to wallow in it. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. There's over 40 of us. I've listed the people below so if you find you are not here after already emailing me, I must have missed you, or if you still want to be added, email me ASAP as I will be sending it off next week. In response to Simon Bone's criticism of my implicit criticism of Gary's previous 3 albums, I feel that the support of so many indicates that what I said is not out of line. I think two people have commented about the negativity of criticizing his previous few albums, which is a small minority. Still I respect your opinions. I personally have listened to Sacrifice many more times already than I have to Machine & Soul, Outland and even Metal Rhythm which I do like. This tells me it is a much better album. There is nothing bad about it. I think the support for the letter indicates that many others think so too. Please don't feel I am trying to alienate you because I am not. As was indicated by the poll of our fave albums many months ago, people have different likes and dislikes. There is diversity within this group. I hope Gary won't take the implicit criticism too hard, rather, I hope he will view it as justification for his new direction and attitude which is what I am trying to cultivate by heaping the well-deserved praise upon Sacrifice. This message is directed primarily at the three individuals who have sent me $10 cheques for a copy of the Gary Numan MuchMusic special. A really strange set of circumstances has led to your not receiving those tapes, which in fact were created and left with someone to be mailed. They never were and seem to have been lost (along with the pinhead who took the tapes AND the postage money). Furthermore, due to a disk crash here... while I have the NAMES of the three individuals, I have neither their email addresses nor their snailmail addresses. I need these three people to email me with a mailing address so that I can make good (albeit *VERY* late) on my promise. They know who they are - to avoid any possibility of fraud I'll refrain from naming them here. Once I've got your address I'll make a new tape (with the music special and maybe a couple of other goodies on it) and mail it out to you right away. I will also include an AUDIO tape containing, among other things, a little something I produced at school (I'm a radio production major at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology) - it's an installment of our regular half-hour show called "Music Magazine". I've done three of them - the first one sucked rather badly but the next two netted me an "A" for each of 'em. The featured musicians are Enya and Gary Numan. I think you'll enjoy 'em both (especially the latter). I'd like to thank Derek Langsford for selling me that Numan interview disc some time back - it was *INVALUABLE* in the creation of this show, as I sampled quite a number of interview clips from it (some of which I had to use the tone-generator to "bleep" a couple of naughty words out of). This tape is a freeby to help compensate, in a small way, for the incredible delay in getting these videotapes out to those people who sent me money in good faith. I did not ever intend to rip you off, intentionally or unintentionally (it was definitely the latter) and I sincerely hope that you call off any hitmen that you've hired to rub me out. :-) I'm no longer making videotape copies available. I've been assured that making them available does not, at least under Canadian law, violate copyright (it falls under "fair use"), especially considering that I'm not taking a profit and I'm including the whole show as broadcast, WITH the commercials, but I haven't asked MuchMusic for their permission and I get the feeling that they'd want a piece of the action if I did. :-) HOWEVER, the copyright for the Numan Music Magazine audio tape (with Enya on the flipside) belongs to the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology, and I've got a signed release form sitting right in front of me that says I *CAN* make copies of it for anyone I like so long as it's not for profit. I estimate $5 will cover the cost of the tape (Type II Chrome) plus shipping very well. That's $5 Canadian by the way - anyone from the US should note this well, as cheques made out on American banks in American funds really annoy my bank (which likes to take 30 days to cash 'em). Included on the two music specials: Numan - "Cars '93 Sprint", "I Dream Of Wires" (Robert Palmer's version), "My Breathing" (from Strange Charm), and "New Anger", plus several audio clips of Gary. Enya - "Orinoco Flow", "The Celts", "Aldebaran", "Caribbean Blue", "Book Of Days", and "Storms In Africa". No interview clips available to me for this one, but some nice instrumental tracks running underneath the announcer. By the way, the announcer for both specials is yours truly. As an announcer, I leave something to be desired... but at least the production is first rate (if I do say so myself). :-) If you are indeed interested (and still trust me to deliver the goods - if you're concerned, wait until the three individuals I've spoken of confirm here that they've actually RECEIVED those goods), please get your order in before the end of March. I graduate near the end of April and will likely be leaving town sometime around then (or possibly earlier - many of us in this program get job offers before graduation) and don't want anyone to send $5 to an address that I no longer live at. Once I've landed a job somewhere I'll renew the offer with a new address. In the meantime, until March 31st, I'm at: Joe Lindstrom 16 Falbury Bay N.E. Calgary, AB T3J 1H6 (Remember, that's $5 in *CANADIAN* funds... for you Americans, that's... what, about 25 cents?) I was never aware there were so many people who loved Numan as much as I . I've been fanatically following him for 16 years . I was at the tender age of 8 when Cars hit the airwaves and I've never been the same . It sounded like music for aliens . I loved it ! I was fortunate enough to have a mom who was a DJ at the time so she encouraged my fascination with him . In fact , she already owned a copy of 'The Pleasure Principle' when I asked her about him ! Then I saw him perform live on SNL and my fate was sealed . Doomed to be ridiculed by countless headbangers throughout my childhood for liking "fag music" ! Well , fortunately I never gave in to these idiots who most likely are in prison by now and I became.............a NUMANOID !!!!!!! Chicago has been kind to my Numan collection and I would rather die than give it up . And as for Sacrifice , welcome back Gary ! I had tears in my eyes when I listened to it for the first time . I hope to make new Numanoid friends here. Scorbie ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 21 Feb 1995 15:40:51 GMT From: lssmith@genvax.glam.ac.uk (LEON SMITH:GLAMORGAN UNI.) Subject: New Single, etc. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings everyone, I've just heard the details of the new single so I thought I'd pass them along. The release date is 13/3/95, but thats UK only (no shocks there). The single is to be a double 'A' side Magic/Absolution. The formats planned are:-12", 12" picture disc, CD single and picture CD. For me the most interesting thing is that Magic is not the version from Sacrifice, nor the version from the forthcoming extended mixes album, but has been totally re-recorded. Gary sold off all his equipment just before Christmas (anyone else out there in the UK fan club will have had the flier advertising the gear). He then totally re-equipped himself. He discovered that his new synths could do some really groovy things that the old ones couldn't, thus the re-recording. The extended mix album's due about March, followed by the live ep and lp in April. Can't wait! Leon. P.S. Absolution is a totally new track. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Leon Smith "Makes Cambodia look like Kansas" Learning Resources Centre University of Glamorgan. lssmith@glam.ac.uk ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 24 Feb 1995 09:02:32 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: new single? Paul spoke to Brian and me several times last fall and seemed very genuine. However, Paul moved towards the latter part of the year and nobody has heard from him since. His phone number is no longer in service and he has not replied to any of our letters. Some people I know have sent him money for Numan Fan Club items and have received nothing even though the cheques were cashed. I wrote to Beryl Webb in mid January requesting knowledge of Paul's whereabouts and whether she thought that things were still in order. To date I have had no reply. I will endeavour to call Beryl next week but for now I suggest that you not send anything to Paul Bosanko. If it seems clear that Paul has fled the coup we can then start thinking about persuing him via the post office for mail fraud. I am requesting that his name and phone number be removed from the Digest credits. If anyone knows anything abot Paul's whereabouts or has had recent contact with him (since Jan 1) please email me. I'll keep you updated. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Dept. of Biology Tel.
