To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello! I have been reading the past few issues and this will be my first contribution. I want to say first that I find this information extremely valuable. I am especially grateful to Derek for listing the known Numan CDs. I regret that I don't have as many of the CDs as I've had access to, but sometimes food n rent are more important :/ Anyways, I have a CD single that Derek did not mention. It came out the same time as the Asylum CDs, and although I wanted to purchase them all at the time, I couldn't, so I bought this Japanese 3" CD single that was available. It has the same silver graphics as the Asylum CDs. It is called 'Exhibition' and has 5 songs: Cars (E 'Reg' Model) We Take Mystery to Bed I'm an Agent Complex Trois Gymnopedies (1st Movement) all in a wrap around sleeve, with a lyric sheet that also mentions the track listings of the 3 Asylum CDs. I have not seen this for sale anywhere else, so I am definitely glad I purchased it, although I *still* need to get Asylum 2. The other item is the mention of the 'All Across the Nation' single. Derek has it listed as a Holland album. I remember seeing it for sale by someone in Chicago when it first came out.. anyways, I have the CD single of 'All Across the Nation' in a black sleeve, but nowhere does it mention country of origin. I know there is a 12" single that has a black cover, and one with a blue cover. I wonder if the CD single also has a blue cover version. Anyways, thanks so much for all the info. -Jim ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 13 Mar 1995 14:05:05 -0800 (PST) From: Velocity-9 Subject: Berserker news To: numan@cs.uwp.edu so far i've got 41 people who have mailed me about interest in at least one copy of berserker. however, one of those people has access to a writeable CD unit. Fernandes asked me in email: >What about "Change Your Mind" with Bill Sharpe circa 1985? My response (edited to hide my awful typos and sentence contstruction): Being CD discography I didn't include it because "Change Your Mind" never got a CD single issue much to my annoyance. The Canadian version of "Exhibition" contains "No More Lies" and "Change your Mind". In contrast "I'm on Automatic" and "No More Lies" did have CD single releases in Europe. Adrian responded: >Well, the 12" version of Change Your Mind is available on a compilation >in Canada called "Hardest Hits, Volume II". Change Your Mind was a big hit in Canada which may explain Adrian's interest plus its availability on "Exhibition" and the presence of the 12" mix on a various artists hits compilation. I wish they had included the 12" on the "Automatic" CD. The other 12" are there but not this one - the bigger prize IMO. Sigh. I'm a sophomore at West Chester University in West Chester. My family's home is in Allentown, PA, but I rarely get there. My older brother turned me on to Gary's music around 1985 when he repeatedly played his then favorite tapes: Replicas, Telekon, and (you know) the Pleasure Principle. It took me awhile to appreciate them, but when it finally hit me I became a devoted fan. Strange, considering I had no idea what Gary did since 1980 or who was in his band or even what Gary looked like (other than the tiny stills on Atco's cassette releases). Eventually my brother found New Anger and I almost gave up on Gary. But, for some reason my fondness for that album slowly grew and, over the years I have enjoyed everything Gary has done (when I can find a copy). Currently I'm music director at the campus radio station here and get to listen to tons of new music. Unfortunately we're not serviced by Numa. Other than that, I'm an Art Major and would like to be a painter. I live off campus and, other than Gary, enjoy listening to Pere Ubu, Pavement, Bowie, London Suede, and a dozen other groups. My favorite Gary tune is "I'm an Agent." ------------------------------ Date: 15 Mar 95 01:15:38 -0800 From: Joe.Lindstrom@telekon2.cambo.cuug.ab.ca (Joe Lindstrom) Subject: I WANT SACRIFICE!! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Howdy! Can anyone find me a copy of Sacrifice? What I'm looking for is someone who *KNOWS* they can get an extra copy to email me. Once they hear back from me, they would then go out and buy it, wait for my payment to arrive in the mail, then mail it to me. My local record stores are running into a total brick wall in their repeated attempts to import a copy for me. And these guys are VERY good - I've only seen them fail on "Asylum 1", which as it turned out was no longer available anyways. The same was true of "Asylum 2" at the time and they STILL managed to dig me up a copy of that one! But they can't get Sacrifice for love or money. And that's got me SERIOUSLY choked. I'd even be happy to get the single "A Question Of Faith", but alas, that one's not even in the computer listings. Oh, and if anyone's willing to work a reverse deal (I buy the disc and wait for you to send loot), my supplier has an extra copy of the 7-track Cars CD single, featuring 7 different versions of Cars: "'93 Sprint", "Multivalve", "Classic" (original), "Endurance", "Top Gear", "Motorway", and "E. Reg" (regular not extended). This one, I think, has the distinction of having the TOTALLY COOLEST Numan CD cover art I've ever seen. :-) $11.99CDN is the pricetag. Oh, and speaking of the Sprint Mix... ...we held a CTSR Radio "Retro Rave" last weekend, featuring '70's and '80's music. A good time was had by all... until they played the Sprint Mix. TOTALLY cleared the floor. The DJ was quite embarrassed... as was I, since I had pestered him all night to play the thing. :-) On the other hand, a few local nightclubs that play "house" music are *REALLY* giving this single a lot of play, and the floor is PACKED with dancers when it comes up. I'm 29 years old and work at the Harvard School of Public Health in Boston, Mass. I first heard Gary Numan when I was in high school, in about 1981 - whatever year Replicas was released. I loved Replicas tremendously, and soon found an import copy of the self-titled release, and bought the subsequent releases Pleasure Principle, Telekon and Dance. After Dance my musical tastes and Gary's offerings diverged for about 10 years, while I went for a punkier, heavier sound. Then, about two years ago, I rediscovered Gary Numan's music, and remain a fan. I saw Gary Numan in 1983(?) on his Teletour in St. Paul, Minnesota. I was still in high school at the time, and I really awe-struck by the concert. Gary was great, the stage was incredible, and the sound was fabulous. I took about 30 photographs, which, sadly, I have lost in the intervening years. My current musical interests are quite varied: Gary (of course), Nina Hagen, Motorhead, Shellac, Nine Inch Nails, various Foetus/Clint Ruin/Jim Thirwell creations, SPK, Severed Heads, Metallica, etc. etc. I'm looking forward to lots of news about Gary Numan, and I bet this will spur me to purchase more of his recordings. If anyone feels strongly about recommending something to me, you can email me at bbrustma@episun1.harvard.edu. A bit about myself - I've been listening to Gary since his Saturday Night Live appearance (I think what caught my attention was the subtitles during "Praying to the Aliens"...). I've been buying his albums/CDs since then, although recently it's been hard to find much besides an occasional import live CD. Some of my other favorite artists include Cheap Trick, the Beatles, the Cars, Ultravox, Kiss, and other odds & ends. I play guitar, as well as limited keyboards and bass guitar. Some of my favorite sounds on Gary's albums include: - the (fretless) bass playing on almost all of them, particularly Pino Palladino, Mick Karn, and Joe Hubbard. - Jess Lidyard - check out the drum fills on "Check It" -- whatever happened to him after Dance? - the octave synth riff at the beginning of "Metal" - Gary's rhythm guitar on The Plan, First Album, etc. - well, I'll quit before I've listed every instrument on every song. I'll leave with a couple of questions (it's not a trivia quiz, since I don't know the answers): 1. What's Gary singing (in Japanese?) in This Wreckage? 2. In "Are 'Friends' Electric?", he sings "...about little girls and S.U.'s". What are S.U.'s? Thank you, Craig Stenseth ------------------------------ Date: 15 Mar 95 01:15:22 -0800 From: Joe.Lindstrom@telekon2.cambo.cuug.ab.ca (Joe Lindstrom) Subject: Nine Inch Nails to cover Gary Numan To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Howdy! This is kind of a neat story. In the radio broadcasting course I'm taking, there are two students who have a *VERY* strong passion for a particular artist. We're unwavering, and we're also constantly picking on each other over their choice of artist. One of them is me, and my artist is, of course, Gary Numan. The other is Craig Harris. His artist is Nine Inch Nails (aka Trent Reznor) Imagine our mutual TOTAL SURPRISE today when we learned that Nine Inch Nails has recorded a cover of an old Numan tune. The song is "Metal", which was specifically significant to me as I use the handle "The Liquid Engineer" on various local bulletin boards. I can't offer you much more information than this. We learned about it in the April 1995 edition of "Details" magazine, which has a cover story on Mr. Reznor. Apparently, the interviewer arrived at Reznor's studio for the interview and INTERRUPTED Reznor's recording session, during which he was recording "'Metal', an old Gary Numan song". That's the sum total of the info I've got. You can pick up the mag if you like but you won't likely learn anything more, including whether or not Reznor plans to release this as a single or as part of an upcoming album release. So anyways, Craig and I agreed to temporarily bury the hatchet (in all seriousness, this has been a VERY friendly little competition between us). I played "Metal" for him in one of the audio studios, then he played a few NIN tunes. We then shared our views on the types of work each artist does. Our conclusion is that this cover is likely going to be QUITE different from the Numan original, likely with a lot of Reznor-original material as well as a faster tempo. We both agree on one thing - we're VERY cautiously optimistic. Apparently, Mr. Reznor has a proven GOOD track record with the various covers he's done - they've always been obscure works (but he apparently is sure not to pick obscure ORIGINAL ARTISTS, which is, I guess, a compliment to Gary) to avoid the "instant comparison" syndrome. He always strives to ADD TO the original and to adopt it as his own, rather than simply trying to see if he can perform the same song better (and quite frankly, I can't see ANYONE outdoing Gary on this song). Nine Inch Nails' fans are a bit more numerous than Gary's and every bit as loyal as we are. But the musical styles are quite a bit different. This is going to be a very interesting marriage between us and the NIN fans - but I'm hoping for the best. The aim was to offer constructive advice, emphasising how much the new album, direction and approach were liked while making the point that the previous two albums were not as well received by what I perceive to be a majority of his fans. The support of 50 people in this group backed this up. I mentioned to Beryl in my cover letter that some people did not sign because of the implicit criticism >From my cover letter: "I have also included the letter that has been co-signed by 50 people from the computer group I started congratulating Gary on "Sacrifice". It is our hope that you can forward or give the letter to Gary. There is some implicit criticism of his previous albums which reflects the views of those signing. I hope Gary doesn't take it badly. What we are trying to say is that Gary's new direction is just so good and satisfying it makes "Outland" and Machine & Soul" pale in comparison. We want to encourage his newfound creativity and confirm that his new approach to his music is supported by an overwhelming majority of his fans. Some in the group would not sign the letter because they only wanted to praise the new album without saying anything about his previous 2. I think people respect Gary's decision to make "Outland" and "Machine and Soul" sound like they did but they have been among their least favourite Numan albums. In contrast, "Sacrifice" is one of everyone's favourites." I may have overdid it by saying "Sacrifice" is one of everyone's favourites. There was some controversy between Gary and IRS Records with "Outland". There are rumours that IRS sent it back to Gary 4 times for remixing until they were happy. Beryl said it was IRS's idea to make it dancey against Gary's wishes. While Gary thought "Machine & Soul" was a pretty good album upon completion the last UK Fan Club newsletter of last year quoted Gary as saying that the new album was a result of him going back to doing what he thinks he does best and ignoring the idea of making music that might get radio play. Together this information would indicate that, in retrospect, Gary is not completely happy with either album. And that is why there has been a dramatic change with "Sacrifice". I think our letter may just be in agreement with how Gary feels, and as a result he might not take the letter's implicit criticism as badly as you would suggest. I'll report back if I hear how Gary responded to our letter. Apparently, after doing this, he was offered an opportunity to work as a production assistant for Columbia/Sony in Japan and had just one afternoon to tie up his affairs before getting on a plane. He called because he was back in California for two weeks before returning to Japan for another few months. He had asked his roommate to take care of anything Numan related that came in but apparently he had not done so, hence the lack of response. Paul says he cannot manage the Numan FC business long distance from Japan but will try and resolve any outstanding business between him, Beryl Webb and the 3 or 4 people for whom he was obtaining merchandise. I advised him to call Beryl as there seems to be some discrepencies between what she told me and what Paul said. I hope to hear about that outcome next week.
