Although I am quite annoyed at not being able to obtain a copy of this album, which is one of my personal faves, on CD, I don't think bootlegging it is the answer. And as was noted, this is not really representative of what a fan club should be. However, if Gary is aware of this forum then he should realize there is a great demand out here for BERSERKER. I only hope he will answer our calls. I have not bought SACRIFICE, or anything since STRANGE CHARM for that matter. I did listen to METAL RHYTHM and was not much impressed. However, I would argue that BERSERKER, THE FURY and STRANGE CHARM are one hell of a trilogy. Just my thoughts. Love on ya! BDC ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 1995 14:04:19 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: 1995 UK Gary Numan Fan Club Yearbook To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Each year the UK Fan Club puts out a glossy Yearbook that recaps the previous year. This years looks particularly good with some nice colour photos and silver type on black, a la Sacrifice. The front cover has Gary in his "Sacrifice" leathers doing what Al Crawford described as his Donald (or was it Daffy) Duck facial expression like on the cover of "Ghost". Most of the photos inside are good pictures: Gary in a Harvard, Beryl beside Gary's Corvette, the Sacrifice photoshoot, Gary in ocncert, Gary sitting on an upturned dustbin (?), pcitures from backstage, Gary on his bike, Gary karting, in his studio, with his girlfriend, and with the McClaren from the Cars EP shoot. 1994 Diary by Beryl Webb ------------------------ January - worked with fans in studio, went to Silverstone to see Formula 1 car testing, did a lot of Karting. February - made a rare trip into London for an after tour get together with the band, mixed the DC live tapes, more fans in the studio, worked on the new album. March - put together DC video with Nicky Robson, came together quickly but had a few problems synching voice with footage due to equipment inaccuracies, the end product was very pleasing. Celebrated his 36th birthday, co-wrote an article for Air Display, recorded 3 songs for TV show "In Bed with Me Dinner" including the new song "Scar". April - More karting including a 3 hour endurance race (Gary's team was 5th out of 16), Beryl got a new puppy, Gary wrote Love and Napalm. New album needed to be finished by August to be in time for the planned November tour. Like A Refugee was released and Gary promoted it as best as he could but he wanted to distance himslef from the song as much as possible as it was very unrepresentative of Gary's own music that he was working on but he did not want to upset any chances of the song's success or the people who asked him to sing on it. It was very delicate and he was glad when it was over. NuFederation was created after consulting with people in the publishing industry. This gives him complete control over graphics for records and Fan Club materials and makes the process more efficient. He does all his own work for records, T-shirts, programmes, backstage passes, newsletters and yearbooks. Gary also wrote 3 pieces for a TV advert for a French perfume company at the request of a London Advertising company. One of the pieces became Deadliner. May - Radial Pair prepped routine for display season. For the 1994 season Gary had to fly a friends Harvard as his was undergoing maintenance. Designed cover for DC video, took part in Norwich Car Rally which nearly ended in disaster due to a split fuel line, saw Toyah at the London Marquee and worked more on Sacrifice. June - more airshows, received a Trophy for the Radial Pair's display, more karting. A major drive by Tony and Gary with Pinnacle to improve Numa's efficiency which seems to be working. DC album and EP artwork finalised and sent to printers, Gary designed newsletter 42/43. Workload now very heavy. July - more karting, air displays, one with his brother John, final vocals for Sacrifice, arrival of Nogbad the Bad (cat). Wrote article for Air Display International. August - DC released, Sacrifice mixed and completed. Artwork for Sac and AQoF finalised. Gary shopped for clothes and did a photo session with Charlie Best for it. Bad weather affected two air displays, one of which made him miss the Numan Convention in London much to everyone's, including Gary's, disappointment. Sac was cut on the 30th, redesigned and compiled the Radial Pair Soundtrack CD, setting up Salvation Records in the process. September - flying trip to Southport near Blackpool, and more displays. Newsletter 44 completed, more kart racing. Gary flew two fans in the Harvard at Duxford. Gary drove in a charity karting race for Beggars Banquet who won. Designed tour itinerary and programme. October - radio tour to promote new single, rehearsals fro tour. Kipper introduced Gary to motorbikes and a whole new passion sprung to life. One last display at Dusxford. Feedback on album and single from fans was exceptional. November - Tour time. Set went down very well. Another tour to remember. After, Gary got his Corvette back with a new black paint job, bought a Yamaha Virago bike, took lessons at CC Motorcycle training Centre in Wealstone, and on Dec 1 passed his test. December - gave a talk about his flying adventures. Overall it weas a busy year, very rewarding fro us all. Gary returned to form with a remarkable new album and record sales began to improve. We thank you all. Speed ----- Gary writes about his passion for speed but he is aware that it is a killer. Nearly everybody thinks they are much better at driving than they really are. Often innocent bystanders are the victims. Gary relates a story that happened many years ago. He was hurtling down country roads in his Ferrarri (sic) averagig about 100mph. he came around a corner, barely incontrol only to find an old man, out for a walk crossing the road ahead. He was immediately overwhelmed by terror and the realisation of his own lack of ability. The car skidded, smoke came from the tires. He missed the man and every other obstruction but only by luck. He got out and apologised. The man was a war veteran and had survived terrible moments. "What a tragedy it would have been to have had his life end on a beautiful English morning by an arrogant idiot with more money than sense". Since then Gary has rarely done anything that he believes to be wreckless. People have warned him about motorcycling - another dangerous thing to add to his list. But he knows he's not a lunatic or stupid. It is not just the speed but the machinery that attracts him. He does not consider low level acrobatics wreckless. Knowing he can control the machines also is a thrill for him. Controlling the power of things that can go fast is the best of all. Karting is not too fast, powerboat racing though outrageously exciting was very expensive, display flying is what he knows most about but biking has opened up a new world of challenges. He will always be fascinated with machines. He's not one to hang around nightclubs and talk about art and music. He needs challenges. Some find it with climbing mountains, pot-holing or other thinks that make people question their sanity. For Gary it is machines. He appreciates the concern for his welfare but it's his nature to strap himslf into or onto or around things that go quickly. A last piece from Gary (quoted as written) ---------------------- 1994 was a good year for me. In my opinion, an opinion which I'm pleased to see is shared by many of you, Sacrifice was the best album I've done for a long time, perhaps the best ever. To write something like that after so many disappointments and setbacks was a great relief for me. I honestly wasn't sure I knew how to do it anymore. I had forgotten so many things and it seemed to me that I had been wandering around for the last few years with no real idea of where I was going or what I was looking for. To say I was lost is to speak far too lightly of something that nearly wrecked my career. At the beginning of '95 [should have been '94] I was desperate, and now as '96 [should be '95] begins to unfold, I feel more confident than I have done in quite some time. I may never see the success again that I have enjoyed in the past, but then again, that could have been just a taster of what's to come. All I know is that I am proud of the work I'm doing, I'm very happy you liked Sacrifice so much, I hope you like what's coming in the future and, whatever happens, I thank you with all my heart for staying with me this far. Before I start, I'd like to make 2 points. 1) I was really looking forward to this, as I liked the new album. 2) "Magic" is one of my favorite tracks, it has the same effect that "Friday I'm in Love" by the Cure did. ANYWAY.....so's I run (literally) down to my music store, grab "Absolution", plunk down my $10.99+, then run back to listen to it. And this is what I thought. "Absolution" I feel I'm ina minority but I loved the song, very simple, very repetitive. The percusssion sounds better, his voice is fine and I'm a happy camper. I think this song beats "The Seed of a Lie" and wish it was on the album. Ok, so here is where it gets annoying. "Magic" "Trick(ed) Mix". A perfect name of the mix because this is exactly how i felt when i realized i paid for this. It's a waste, there is noting new or improvisational by way of new musical tangents on this song. Frankly, I prefer the original and could care less about this mix. "Magic" (Extended) I had some hopes but gain, the extended version has little merit to add to the original. Actually, I find a lot of his "extended versions" really dont cut it and end up hurting the song (ex. The Hunter, I Can't Stop, Your Fascination, Emotion, etc) while really only a few hit (We Take Mystery (on that promo 12"), Berserker). In conclusion, if you haven't bought the new single yet, then you have a choice. "Absolution" is a good track, but is it worth the full price of a CD single? Honestly, I wished he put "Play Like God" and "Whisper of Truth" on this single b/c they are really good songs too. But with the "extended" versions of "Magic" instead I felt short-changed. M ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 1995 20:26:01 -0700 (MST) From: "BRIAN D. HAMMOND" Subject: A Few More Thoughts To: numan@cs.uwp.edu "Absolution" struck me as a decent but somewhat forgettable song. I liked the chorus part and the emphasis on synthesizers also made a positive impact. I'll need to listen to this song a few more times before I form a stronger opnion but it definitely has the potential to grow on me tremndously. The big question is whether it will be able to overcome a somewhat forgettable overall sound. If nothing else, I far prefer this type of moody piece as a single release than the stuff like "Machine & Soul" with its dance-house emphasis. I hope that the next single Numa releases (whether another _Sacrifice_ variant or not) seeks to use a different beat and percussion section-this one is getting old. The "Magic (trick mix)" is okay but nothing great. I would have prefered a genuine B-side song like "Play Like God" was than a mildly remixed version. Besides the different intro/outro, the song has a more pronouced beat and more echo chamber on the vocals. This won't become an addiction. The "Magic (extended mix)" isn't daring enough. I feel Numan could have gotten more radical in this one and created a great track. Instead, it does the predictable things Numan remixes always do. Despite the predictability, I'm still salivating over the iminent release of the extended mixes CD which will contain the extended version of "The Seed Of A Lie" (already out on 7" single with the _Sacrifice_ LP) which is absolutely BEAUTIFUL!! I'm only moderately up on the Erland rating system, but I'd give this a tepid +1 with the potential to go higher if "Absolution" does grow on me. As for Numa Records Year 1: This was only released on vinyl and was the only LP ever released by Numa that featured artists other than Numan. By 1985, the label was already in financial distress and thus no "Numa Records Year 2" was ever released. There were plans to release an LP by the group "Hohokam" called 7 Deadly Sins, but this got cancelled after financial problems and a dispute between Numan and the group (too bad, IMO, "Hohokam" and "Grey Parade" actually had potential). Numa's last non-Numan single release was in 1986 and was, I believe, from a guy called Lee Munro who wrote a song called "I've Got A Pair Of Stereo Headphones" (although I could be wrong on this last point). All Numa releases were done in the standard format of 7" and 12" single. Numan's releases, of course, also had all the fun variations of coloured vinyl, picture discs, 10" singles, etc... Hope this helps. Me! I Disconnect From You ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 27 Mar 95 12:02:04 -0800 From: Gordon Van Huizen Subject: Berserker on DAT To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) I happen to have a SV-3700 DAT deck, a CD player with digital outputs, AND Berserker on CD (thanks Derek!). I'd like to discuss the legalities and moralties of the copying though before going ahead with making a copy. How does NUMA feel about this? Gordon ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 31 Mar 1995 15:11:30 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Bootlegs - the Numa perspective To: numan@cs.uwp.edu With the UK Fan Club packet there was a note about bootlegs. This comes in response to a bootleg CD and video of last year's tour. John Stubblefield, a phone contact without email in Pennsylvania, called me to say he found a copy of the CD. It seems fairly well done with one typo "Stormtrooper in Prag". It is over 77 mins long taking 17 songs from Gary's Manchester show. Please not that Numa will be releasing the full show on two CDs this spring with better sound quality. The piece written provides insight into how Numa have reacted to this bootleg but perhaps not to how they might react to the suggested plan of copying Berserker CDs. Bootlegs (typed word for word) -------- In the past we have always turned a blind eye to the various bootleg records and video's we have become aware of. We believe in many ways a reasonably healthy bootleg scene is good for an artist. However, we do take exception when people appear to get a little greedy and go too far, especially when it's Gary's fans that are doing it. We have been monitoring for some time the activities of a couple of people and would like to point out to you all the likely consequences of what these people are doing. First of all, they are ripping you off badly. We know what these things cost to manufacture and these so called fans are charging you many many times what it costs them. Secondly, we may have to take steps to protect Gary while he is touring from these illegal recordings. This could mean searching evrybody as they enter the hall and a ban on all cameras. It must be obvious to everyone that if this bootlegging continues it would have a quite serious effect (sic) on how Gary tours in the future and in our own future plans through the Fan Club. Gary is already thinking of closing down Salvation records, which was intended to supply the Fan Club only with rare and special releases, as many of these bootlegs are undermining our own plans and intentions. These bootleggers are doing nobody any favours but themselves and we would ask all of you to let us know of any bootleg products that you may become aware of. One other aspect of all this is the fact attempts were made on the last two tours to film and record Gary at the hotels after the concerts. This is a massive invasion of privacy and, considering Gary's extremely open invitation to all fans to spend time with him and the band after every show, is a serious betrayal of his trust. It would be a great shameif we had to stop people from coming back, or staying in, the same hotels as the band. We rae not against bootlegs. We are keen to see and allow, even encourage at times, a good bootleg scene around Gary, but we are against fans turning it from a collectors hobby into a business. Please help us. ---------- Until we know what plans Numa have for the future of Berserker I think nothong should be done. If there are no plans to rerelease Berserker on CD then maybe with the agreement of Numa, some copies could be made. I cannot support any attempt to make counterfeit CDs without the explicit, written approval of Numan Music Ltd and Numa Records. I have been trying to contact Beryl about the future of Berserker this week without success up to the time of my mailing this. I will let you know when I do speak with her. I was under the impression that it generally wasn't practical to make fewer than 500 or so copies of a CD, but I don't know anything about the duplicating technology here. If it _is_ in fact possible to economically make copies on such a small scale, I think this would be a good project for us to undertake as a group. Someone (Derek?) could negotiate an agreement with Numa; someone else could duplicate the disks; and someone (I might volunteer) could duplicate the booklet, assemble the CD/booklet/jewel cases, and handle the mailing/payment of the disks and the currency conversion to pay Numa. The details would need to be worked out, of course, but if this can be done, it would be excellent for everyone involved. I can't see why Numa would object, since it would simply mean extra money for them with no effort exerted. \/ __ __ _\_ --Sean Crist (kurisuto@unagi.cis.upenn.edu) --- | | \ / For a free copy of the Bill of Rights, finger _| ,| ,| ----- this account. _| ,| ,| [_] Q: What do Standard Oil, AT&T, and Microsoft have in | | | [_] common? In fact, since it generates interest, it can only help promote people in buying what IS still in print. #2: Showing respect for the artist. Well, I would think that any real artist wants his work enjoyed. If it comes down to not hearing his music or hearing an illegal copy, don't you think he would rather have someone listen to it? Of course the better option is to buy it, but if it isn't for sale then the choice comes down to illegal or none. I'd show respect for GN by getting the illegal copy, respect showing in that I'd break the law (albiet a loosely enforced one) in order to hear unavailable music from him. I'm really torn on this one. I can't even find the %@*%$ thing on vinyl, let alone disc, so I've not even heard it at all. I'd buy a counterfeit if the price was right but I'd feel really guilty about doing so, especiall with an artist like Numan, who has really cared about his fans (unlike MANY other artists). I would also then purchase the real thing IF it ever sees a general release. A few things I thought of while readeing the other posts about a potential unauthorised pressing: First, ONLY offer it as an "up front" kind of deal, take orders and then only make that number. Second, sell it at cost ONLY, and make absolutely NO PROFIT. Third, strongly encourage everyone who buys a copy to purchase the legitimate one if it sees a wide release Fourth, but most essential, TRY to get Numa/Numan's ok before doing anything like this. If Numa has no intention of making this elusive album readily available, they may go for an idea like this. Fifth, make the packaging atractive, at least up to the standards of a "real" Numa release. Well, that's about it. Like I said I'm really at odds with myself over this, and I hope that Numa will come to their senses and just release the damn thing. Bradley Beving bbeving@subrec.mn.org ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 30 Mar 1995 17:25:25 -0600 (CST) From: Martin Wagner Subject: Thoughts: "Absolution" and more To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Bought "Absolution." Though I don't find it as strong a song as really anything on Sacrifice, the mood of the song is consistent and the simple appraoch to the writing helps focus your concentration on the atmospherics more. That low-frequency keyboard riff does envelop you in something very nearly gothic. The "Magic" remixes, sadly, did little for me. I think Gary needs to have outside parties do his remixes. As the songwriter, he's probably a bit too close to the material to come at it from an utterly left-field direction. I qould point out Zeus B. Held's remix of "Cars" as a good example of a classic tune given honest-to-god new life. So I don't know if I'll bother buying "Sacrifice Extended," simply because all it will probably be is "Sacrifice with Longer Running Times." If some good non-LP material is included I'll consider it, but with that screwup on M+S Extended, I'm wary, and besides, I have "Absolution," "Play Like God," and "Whisper of Truth" (which is a much better ballad IMO and deserved single release far more than "Absolution"). To conclude, I'm against some of us pressing quickie CDs of "Berserker" off DAT. Numa should do a legit re-release. Derek mentioned re-releases of "The Fury" and "Strange Charm" (hey, Derek, try to persuade Beryl to get Gary to add B-sides to the new versions!), so perhaps "Berserker" could be repressed at the same time. I'm utterly lacking in any pertinent details, but I know that Gary was a participant in some sort of effort in the UK years ago to make it impossible/more difficult/more criminal to record music off of the radio. This probably isn't much of a concern to him these days considering the amount of air time he gets (sadly enough), but I think his attitude on that topic is probably still representative of his attitude toward unauthorized reproduction in general. I suspect it would piss Numa off pretty badly, actually, and that the chances of getting them to agree to it are probably nil. Of course, if they did agree, I'd have no objection whatever -- I just think it highly unlikely... Ciao! It was over too quickly. The choice of songs seemed very popular which was a massive relief. There were no major problems at all, apart from my catching a flu bug. Having a few people see the sound check for each show was a big success and will be continued in the future. He was sorry he didn't get to meet all those who were selected - there was too much reprogramming and interviews. The support band let him down at the last minute, through no fault of their own, and it was too late to line up anyone else so he played a longer set and started earlier. Comments suggested that was the right thing to do. He's passed my motorcycle licence test and can be seen wobbling around on a gleaming, chrome infested "chopper" style motorbike. >From Beryl ---------- She enjoyed the tour and is looking forward to the next one. Q. Will there be a 7" for AQoF? A. will be released to FC members only in near future. Q. What tracks will be included on unplugged album? A. Don't know at thsi stage. LIke to see a good mixture of old and new. I may just record a small acoustic gig. I still have a lot of thinking to do on it. Q. How's book coming along? A. Not done anything on it since starting to rehearse for the tour. Hope to get back to it after Christmas and have it ready for the 96 album. Q. Having given a talk about your flying exploits, would you ever give a talk about your music to fans? A. I ws very nervous at first doing that talk but it went well. I've never considered talking about my music. Doing it would depend on the level of interest. I'd be happy to do it though. Q. You've not been busy with flying lately. Is it because you are busy with other things or have your feelings changed? A. A bit of both. Because I was enjoying my work more than I have for many years it took my mind off flying for most of the second half of '94. I didn't enjoy the display season much at all this year. Some people got on my nerves, the flying seemed tame and for many other reasons it was more grief than fun. Maybe I am becoming a bit jaded. I am considering easing back in '95, maybe skipping a season altogether. Hog Man! -------- There's an article that I am not going to parapshrase abou;gary's new enthusiasm for motorbiking. This is a personal description of the London Hammersmith Apollo show on Nov 5, 1994. The main points are that the set list was refreshing including Mean Street, Listen to the Sirens, friends, Everyday I Die, The Dream Police and Jo the Waiter, Stormtrooper in Drag, Replicas and Praying to the Aliens. The Sacrifice tracks came over even more darker and menacing live, Deadliner, Bleed and Love and Napalm in particular. AFE did not have a long intro and was much closer to the original than has been heard for a long time. Other highlights were Do you Need the Service and The Hunter. I Dream of Wires, I Die You Die, Remind Me to Smile and Noise Noise, the new live favourite, filled out the set. Miscellaneous ------------- There are photos of Gary performing, with his bike, with the British Ladies armwrestling champion, and with his plane. That's it.
