I didn't intend to insult anyone with my "moral high horse" comment . As for Mathew telling me to" go away" and read another section , I will . Derek mentioned this is causing animosity in the digest and I don't want to be responsible for that . My stance on it is this - If they won't re-issue it but an arrangement with Numa can be made for us to go ahead with royalty payments to them , then so be it . If nothing happens , I'll do it "privately" for myself . I certainly don't want this issue to harm relations between Derek and Beryl . The info from this digest is invaluable so I will push no more ..... On another note-(to Derek) are the Shadowman and Dream Corrosion videos going to be made available to us at all or are we on our own ? And , does anyone own a copy of the extremely rare "I DIE:YOU DIE" alt. version from the video . That version is so much better than the 'regular' and as far as I know only 6 copies were ever made ! Scorbie@aol.com Oh yeah , about This Wreckage. A Japanese friend told me Woo KaDay Oooh ( how he pronounced it , very quickly) means "let's break up" or "let's break it up ". We have paid royalties to Gary and a big heap of cash to the record company as well. It is my humble opinion that a CD-R version made from someone else's CD is fair use for those of us who do own the recording in another format. But the key point here is I WANT ONE AND CAN'T BUY IT! If it were available here, I'd gladly pay for the CD. I would also not hesitate to borrow someone's CD and record my own copy, but alas, that option is not available to me. Let's not forget that selling used software (music) also deprives the artist of royalties for every time it changes hands. Then again, the previous owner no longer has lisence to enjoy that music. The issues are many, varied, and very complex, and will not be solved by us. So Derek, many thanks to you for egging on Beryl et. al. about a re-release, and to Numa and/or Gary: Here's my money! Sell me a copy! Alright, I'm throwing myself into this debate (only because I never knew there was one); what's wrong with 'Heart'? I love this song. For so long, every subsequent release of albums since 'Berserker' has gone into a decline. Metal Rythm only partially resparked my interest in new Numan material so when Outland was released I hesitated. Then I saw the 'Heart' video, and I was blown away. I bought the album and sold it a week later; it was trash (sorry, Gary). I didn't bother to pick up Machine + Soul. It was only reviews of Sacrifice that encouraged me to try again. And I'm glad I did. 'Heart' is a beautiful song which has IMHO one of the best endings he's ever done. Probably 'cause I could relate to it. On another note. Is it true that there other Numan fans out there who like Joh Foxx/ Dead Can Dance/ King Crimson/ Camel/ Steve Hackett? Per your request a bit about me. My name is Scott David Aniolowski, and I've been a fan of Gary's music since about 1981. To my knowledge I have just about everything he's done on vinyl and CD. It's pretty tough to find much Numan material here (in the Buffalo, NY area), but I frequently visit Toronto, where I usually buy the stuff. I am a professional chef by day and a writer by night (I am also an editor and agent). With Gary's permission, I wrote a short story based on much of his music. The story will be published this August. The story is titled "I Dream of Wires" (eh?) and will be in the anthology "Made in Goatswood" - a book of horror stories. This anthology is in homage to Ramsey Campbell, and includes stories by Campbell, A.A. Attanasio, Richard Lupoff, Don Burleson and others. I was also the editor of this anthology, and am very proud of it. I am very thankful that Gary was kind enough to give me permission to do this. Oops.. I meant do the story, of course. I'm VERY new to the internet, so I don't quite have my e-legs yet! Anyway, I think Gary's music is amazing, and I'll never tire of it or his unique talent. My name is DONALD PEDDER, and I live in AUSTRALIA. I am a new (2-3 weeks) "surfer" and was overjoyed to find info on Gary!!! There's not much of it about "down here". About me :- I have been into NUMAN since 1980 when I was 16. People said to me at the time that I would "outgrow" this obsession, but I knew better - and I proved them wrong! 15 years later and still going strong. I went to the first NUMAN concert in SYDNEY and was blown away. Haven't seen anything as good since. And part of the reason for that is that GARY has never come back here again on a concert tour. I'd love to see him "live" again. The thing that I like about GARY specifically, and SYNTHESIZERS in general, is the great VARIETY. They say variety is the spice of life, and that's reflected in my music collection. A bit of this, and a bit of that, and a LOT of this stuff which is all so different (like you know who). My favourite song is BERSERKER (LOVE that "powerful" stuff - HEAVY PLASTIC?), and my favourite album is I,ASSASSIN (probably - they're all great). OTHER favourite artists are - KIM WILDE (not so much lately),TOYAH,DEPECHE MODE,OMD,PROPAGANDA. Australian favourites (which you probably 'aint heard of) are DEF FX (definitely "heavy plastic"),ICEHOUSE,PSEUDO ECHO. Unfortunatley a number of these artists 'aint "producing" no more (as you may have noticed). Bring back the good ol' days (and DON'T "RETIRE",GARY!). I have a few keyboards (the main one is a DX-7),a drum machine, and a 4-track, but I never really have the time to do proper demos (or for that matter to REALLY learn how to program the DX-7). I used to do shift work, and after losing my job I decided to go to UNIVERSITY (not having done so straight after High School) - I'm in my second year of a B.Sc in computers - and neither environment is particularly conducive to having spare time, or being "wide awake" when you do! The stuff I have done is (naturally) reminiscent of NUMAN - not because I'm "copying" - but because that's the sort of stuff I like. APART from music I'm into - PORSCHE's,competitive driving,Grid-Iron (Go 49ERS "6 in '96"),comedy....basically, having a good time. my e-mail address is dpedder@extro.ucc.su.OZ.AU looking forward experiencing the ultimate fans of the ultimate artist on the ultimate media. My name is Robert Eggleston, and live in Ashford Middx in the UK (Gary went to school here!) I have been a Gary Numan fan since 1979, I first got into his music when I saw him in a save the children concert at Wembley Arena on an old black and white TV! I have been to each tour since 1982 and finally got round to joining the Fan Club this year. Other music I like - The Cure, Sisters of Mercy, Fields of the Nephilm, Talking Heads, The Pixies, Oasis. If anyone wants a chat send E-Mail to my CompuServe address 10025,760. I got Numan's latest single today - Absolution, It's a slow "grower" type song. Subject: Late look at Sacrifice and Questions To: 'numanews' As a new subscriber, I must say I find the digest extremely interesting, informative, and refreshingly entertaining. On the whole, the newsletter has a nice conversational tone and a wide variety of topics. I look forward to it every week. This past Saturday, I finally got a copy of Sacrifice. Truly the most profound recording I've heard in quite a while (and I hear A LOT). By using a consistant and dominant beat throughout the album, Gary has produced a work of strong, oppresive mood and conscious totality. The synth sounds are subtle and from a limited palette, yet , vocally, he's never had more range.. None of the tracks stray far from the album's overall style and, thankfully, none seem liked they were rushed. In the past Gary has either tried to sound futuristic (very succesfully done early on) or ultrahip/sexy (the strange and uninspiring past eight years). With Sacrifice, for the first time, Gary sounds MODERN. And it sounds great. He's finally comfortable with the world around him (yet not quite sure about himself). The other day as Scar was playing , I saw some skaters outside and the music seemed to fit. Sacrifice is an excellent album. But then, you already know that. Oh, I've got a few questions maybe someone can answer: 1) This was probably mentioned before, but where are the three live tracks on Here I Am from? Are they off Dream Corrosion? Who chose/chooses the tracks for the Receiver compilations? 2) A few weeks ago, Derek mentioned a photo of Gary and his girlfriend. Who is she? I always thought Gary was gay. If not, then I've been misreading (or misinterpreting) his lyrics. 3) Where does Gary live these days? Where are Outland Studios located? Well, that's all for now, dean. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 19 Apr 1995 12:44:08 -0500 (CDT) From: "George A. I am a 36-year-old retail manager and musician who has lived here for 10 years, being raised in a small town in West Virginia (to which I will not return, thank you very much...;) ) Like a lot of stateside fans, I first became aware of Gary Numan through the PLEASURE PRINCIPLE album. Though my tastes in music range from Emmylou Harris to Black Sabbath, Gary has been my favorite artist ever since. His sense of drama and darkness has always held me spellbound, and I have spent considerable time and money finding his music here. I think I have just about every official release from here and abroad in either vinyl or CD form. After being slightly disappointed by some of his recent releases, I was floored by SACRIFICE, and cannot manage to get it out of my CD player in either the car or my house. Trent Reznor could learn an awful lot about dramatic tension from Gary, in my humble opinion. Like I said, my tastes run very wide musically, but other favorites include Robert Palmer (who covered "I Dream of Wires" and co-wrote and performed "Style Kills" with Gary), Golden Earring, T. Rex and Adam Ant ("Vive le Rock" phase especially!). I play bass, keys and guitar and work on original material on a four-track at home. I am very interested in rumors that Beggars Banquet is due to re-release some Numan material in the States this summer. I am particularly interested in procuring CD copies of "Berserker" and "The Fury" and am wondering if anyone has copies they can part with. Is it also true that these two discs were also released in "extended" versions like MACHINE AND SOUL and SACRIFICE were? Gimme! I guess that's it for introduction. The Internet has opened a lot of doors for me, just as Gary's music has stretched my musical boundaries. Imagine my surprise when I found that the two could come together like this! Thank you very much for this newsletter. And to Gary...if you're ever coming to Florida, let me know. Thanks again....... You really sound as if you've almost got Beryl convinced. Now I'd like to throw another wrench into the machine and ask if you can't try to get her to persuade Gary to include B-sides on the new pressings. You can take the angle of "You'd REALLY sell a lot of copies then!" if you like. :) Frankly I'd like to hear "Berserker" include "Empty Bed Empty Heart," "Here Am I," the remix of "My Dying Machine" that appeared on "New Anger," and anything else I might have forgotten. Same goes for "The Fury" and "Strange Charm." To get "We Need it," "Anthem," "The Fear," "This Ship Comes Apart," "Puppets" and "No Shelter" on "The Fury" and "Survival," "Faces," and "Time to Die" on "Strange Charm" would be awesome! In other, Numa should redo its catalog titles the same way Beggars Banquet did theirs, with complete non-LP bonus tracks. Gary must have approved that for BB to have done it; I cannot imagine why he wouldn't approve the same thing for re-releases on his OWN label. What does everyone else think of this? Derek, do you think--once Beryl has said Numa has green-lighted the re-releases--that this would be a good idea to bring up?
