As if he were mining the rich seam he found with 'Seed of a Lie' (which reminded me vaguely of Bruce Springsteen's 'Streets of Philadelphia'). It's possibly the only Numan song I actually sing aloud to annoy my friends (who have no taste). The extended mixes were pleasant, if a bit dull, and, all in all, if Gary can keep this level of invention up good things are going to happen. ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 30 Apr 95 06:15:00 UTC From: king1@genie.geis.com Subject: Absolution problem To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Does anybody else have the same problem with their 'Absolution' discs? Brad (#119) asked about "Electric Shadows Vol. 1" numbering. I also have it, but my copy has NO NUMBER AT ALL. a bit sus' this situation. actually I have a Q. was there ever a vol.2 (or more). 2. Craig Stenseth (#123) asked about the line "little deals and S.U.s" from AFE (he actually thought it was "little girls", but we all know Gary can be hard to understand - my signoff is what I THINK GARY is saying in CRY THE CLOCK SAID - given I live in SYDNEY, it's close enough for me. PLEASE COME BACK GARY). From Numan's Biography :- "... was a comment on his turbulent relationship at the time with SU WATHAN, the press girl at Beggars Banquet. 'It was a line that fitted, made sense to me, and sounded OK in the context of the song', says GARY." further on that subject (SU):- "In the early days SU WATHAN was extremely close to GARY ........ A Motoring organisation had offered him a ride around BRANDS HATCH in a celebrity-packed occassion, and they had accepted it on his behalf, thinkibg he would love it. SU had the pleasure of telling GARY ...... But he flew off the handle with anger - because they had accepted an engagement for him without telling him." this biog. is probably news to a lot of you so here are the details (good luck in tracking it down - it's 13 years old). the cover photo is GARY a la "Dance". GARY NUMAN - The Authorised Biography by RAY COLEMAN c. 1982 ISBN 0-283-98876-2 SIDGWICK & JACKSON Ltd. 1 Tavistock Chambers Bloomsbury Way London WC1A 2SG and whilst on AFE - 3. This wasn't a Q, but a statement which I believe to be wrong. I don't have the reference but someone mentioned that AFE was a "gay" song. I don't think so! I think there is some mis-interpretation of lyrics here. "Friend" is always in quotes because they are not real (a la BLADE RUNNER - they APPEAR to be real , but are not) hence the whole point to the song - "Are 'Friends' Electric?". There is the obvious mention of the "man outside" and people MAY have thought that he is the 'friend'. I think that if this was the case then it would've been "There's a 'friend' outside...". NOWHERE in the song is there any mention of gender in reference to the 'friend' (who was in the hallway - NOT outside). IN FACT, as far as can be ascertained from the lyrics 'friends' may actually be androgynous. This would make sense. If you were using robots to "service" people , then you could just make them capable of serving both sexes. Given that I'm not gay, then maybe a gay person may pick up on some expression (in the song that is used by the gay community) that I haven't, but given that GARY isn't gay then this is unlikely. 4. Last I heard (a long time ago) GARY was an ATHIEST (spelling?), and given that his references to GOD are usually less than flattering I wouldn't envision that this has changed. "when GOD heard your prayer he said I am not your friend" is such a POWERFUL lyric when you think about it! Imagine if you were religious (and down) and even GOD didn't want to know you! regards, DONALD PEDDER. never gonna "slide out of SYDNEY and...never go back" ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Apr 1995 10:08:50 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Answers to Dean Kotz's Questions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Last week "Kotz, Dean C." asked: > Oh, I've got a few questions maybe someone can answer: > 1) This was probably mentioned before, but where are the three live tracks > on Here I Am from? Are they off Dream Corrosion? Who chose/chooses the > tracks for the Receiver compilations? No, the live tracks are not off the DC album. They are either from the Isolate Tour (1991?) which was recorded and was going to be released or the Emotion Tour (1992?). I am beginning to doubt that the Isolate Tour will be released because he has moved on from that time and has so much on the burner for the next year or so. It would not add much to his catalogue as the time between The Skin Mechanic and DC is only 4 years. With Live Sacrifice coming very soon I think it wise if he did not release it. How many live albums do we really need covering a short amount of time? His live renditions need to evolve some before another live album comes out. For the DC and Sacrifice Tours he has made a conscious effort to play older songs that have not been played live before. This makes them far more interesting and collectible IMO. > 2) A few weeks ago, Derek mentioned a photo of Gary and his girlfriend. > Who is she? I always thought Gary was gay. If not, then I've been > misreading (or misinterpreting) his lyrics. All I know is that her name is Gemma. She is quite attractive, maybe late 20s, with dark slighly longer than shoulder length hair with a few strands bleached in front that frames her face. Her photo appears in the December 94 UK Fan Club newsletter and 95 Yearbook. Gary's lyrics in the past have included gay references ("now only boys, that love only boys", "Jo(e) the waiter held me close, behind the door marked 'Gentlemen'" etc.) which may indicate some sexual ambivalence in the past. Indeed I seem to remember the subject came up in an interview after the release of TPP back in 1979 at which point Gary seemed unsure of his sexuality. He also has written some lines condemning gay people. Whatever, sexuality is far more complex than simply pigeon-holing people into one of two categories. I personally don't care as it is the music that is my interest. > 3) Where does Gary live these days? Where are Outland Studios located? Outland Studio's are at Gary's home. He replaced his home recording equipment in 1990 and renamed it "Outland Studios". This gives him complete control over the recording process. There's no strict schedule for an album, he can take his own time without worrying about studio rental charges, producers, engineers costs. I do not know where he lives. It's not in London. Other than that it is hard to tell. Obviously some fans know as he has allowed them to put down some tracks on tape at his recording studio. Without knowig one of them it will be pretty hard to find out. Personally, I think we should respect his privacy. If I find out I would be reluctant to reveal the info to a potential audience of thousands. Is it >also true that these two discs were also released in "extended" versions >like MACHINE AND SOUL and SACRIFICE were? Gimme! I don't think I have heard those rumours. It would be excellent if BB did put out Gary's BB catalogue in the USA. It should generate more interest in his work and give him a lot more exposure than he gets at the moment here. It may even help him land that illusive US contract. That is the only way he is ever going to tour here - with a US release and the backing of the label. The Fury CD was the regular vinyl version, the extended versions are on a special extended mixes cassette. Numa do hope to rerelease The Fury on CD in the future and everything points to them using the extended mixes for that release. Sadly, IMO the extended mixes are not really extended very much (the album is 51 minutes long as opposed to 40) and the changes are only obvious in a very few places. The Fury I must admit is one of my least favourite albums by Gary. I know I blaspheme (it's better than Outland though :-) Berserker appeared with extended mixes on cassette back in 1984. Not all tracks were extended (all but Pump it Up, The God Film and Child with A Ghost). For the 1992 UK Fan Club limited edition pressing of 2000 CDs, Numa used the extended mixes which makes the disc clock in at nearly 60 minutes. Sacrifice is his longest extended mixes album to date. As you know from last weeks Digest, a repressing of Berserker may be coming soon. It'll be a while for The Fury. I think the damand from UK Fan Club members is for a rerelase of Strange Charm before The Fury. Numa have been promising them since 1992. Unfortunately I don't think the Berserker material comes across as well live. It just doesn't have the umph! and the programmed bass and effects often don't work well combined with live guitar and keyboards. I'd have to disagree on the Berserker track. I'm the person that originally volunteered to make a couple of CD-R copies of the CD. Now that I've seen all of this strange behavior out on the list, I've decided to retract my offer to make the CDs. I'm not interested in getting into a crazy discussion about morals and ethics and such. And, yes, I was probably going to make about $3 or $4 per CD for myself - that way I can pay for the blank CDs that I screwed up in learning the process of how to make proper audio CDs (it's not as easy as you might think). If you think that $15 - $20 is too much to pay for the Berserker CD, then you should just listen to your scratchy vinyl copy. Something that you might want to think about though... If you have a decent computer setup (Mac or PC or whatever), you, too can roll your own CDs. CD-ROM recorders are less than $2000 these days - I'm sure they'll be less than $1000 by the end of the year. I've spent alot of time and money (both my own and my company's) figuring out how do manipulate digital audio data on DAT, CD-R, CD, and WAV files. It's possible for someone with any old CD-ROM drive to digitally turn an entire CD into WAV files and send it over the Internet to someone with a CD-ROM burner. ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 1995 23:26:38 +1000 From: Donald Neil Pedder Subject: Clarification of some Terminology To: numan@cs.uwp.edu O.K. I think it would be a GOOD IDEA if we could clear up some terminology in order to avoid some confusion here. A common question I've seen in the old digests is "is the ISOLATE mix of BESERKER the same as the 'BESERKER' mix?" and vice-versa, and for other songs (though not as much). before addressing that (in fact I THINK this has been answered) I think clarification is necessary. "mix" is commonly used for a number of things. the correct meaning is how the song is mixed i.e. relative loudness of the voice vs. the instruments, etc. However, since 12"'s and the like often have the ".......... (... remix)" it often is used in that context. In this context "version" is also used a lot, and this leads to confusion as "version" also refers to quite different recordings e.g. the different incarnations of CARS. Since "edit" is also a common name with 12"'s I suggest the following CONVENTION:- VERSION - for DIFFERENT recordings (e.g. CARS - ORIG./E REG/'93) EDIT - for LENGTH (e.g. BERSERKER - single/album/12") MIX - in it's true meaning (e.g. "this mix has more emphasis on voice") Obviously you can all just ignore me, but I think most of you can see the value in this. Having said that, re-BERSEKER: there is only ONE VERSION (not counting "live" recordings). there are 3 EDITS - single/album/12". all EDITS have the same MIX. ISOLATE contains the 12" EDIT. (the album edit is the BEST). re-CARS '93 (just to emphasise what I mean): SPRINT and ENDURANCE are different EDITS,same MIX,same VERSION. ENDURANCE is the long EDIT. (I like ENDURANCE a lot, not so keen on SPRINT). Another point that I would like to make is that ALBUM DOES NOT MEAN VINYL! Consider a PHOTO ALBUM. A collection of photo's! Nothing is implied as to whether it is in a traditional album, or one of those modern "flip" things. And a musical album is a collection of songs. Doesn't matter if it's on CD, VINYL, or the back of a MINTIES wrapper! In addition I would like to comment on "style" in peoples e-mails. I always CAPITALIZE people's NAMES ( or when EMPHASIZING a word). people seem to be using *...* or _...._ for emphasis. this is an INTERNET thing (i.e. not seen on the "outside") and I'm long entrenched in using capitals for this. And I think it's a common courtesy to capitalize someone's name as it helps to DRAW ATTENTION to it. Some people may not read the digest word-for-word 1st time through (due to lack of time or whatever) and it helps to make references to names more NOTICEABLE. Again you all COULD just ignore me on this, but there is value in it. regards, DONALD PEDDER. never gonna "slide out of SYDNEY and...never go back" ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Apr 1995 10:23:50 -0500 (CDT) From: Martin Wagner Subject: COME ON, GANG: Live set list poll-send em in! As a new member on this list, I'd like to intoduce myself. My name is Ed Tucker and I live in Massachusetts. I work as a Graphic Illustrator at GTE Labs in Waltham, MA. My first experience with Gary Numan was when a co-worker put a new cassette (Gary Numan: Replicas) in his car tape deck in 1979 and I was floored. This was the best album that I had ever heard. Now, I am 33 years old, so, I was experiencing some very good music from other bands at the time Replicas was released (Ramones, X-Ray Spex, Stiff Little Fingers, Siouxsie & the Banshees, The Clash, etc... ) But, this tape surpassed them all. To this day, it's still one of my favorites, and by far, (I feel) the best material that he's released. I never had the opportunity to see Gary Numan live in concert, but, some friends of mine had seen his Pleasure Principle Tour and were impressed when he emerged in his little auto performing "Cars". Remember Gary when he was on Saturday Night Live and he performed "Praying to the Aliens"? I think he did one more song, but, I can't recall which one it was. I don't have all of his albums, but the ones I do have are as follows: Tubeway Army Replicas Pleasure Principle Telekon Dance I, Assassin The Fury New Anger (There was also a compilation album called "Urrgh.. A Music War". And a live version of "Cars" was included on this. I have the video of these live songs by the same name as the album. Bands that were included were The Alleycats, Athetico Spiz, The Cramps, Gary Numan, Chelsea, etc...) Well, thanks for letting me ramble! I started listening to GN about 1979 when I was about 9 or 10. My favorite music at that time was Pink Floyd & The Beatles. I was NOT into American (i.e., Foreigner, Journey, Rush, etc) music. Being 9 & living in a slightly conservative suburb of Chicago, I wasn't exposed to a lot of new music. I turned on the radio one day, and "Cars" was playing--it had just come out. It was like a revelation from Heaven! I'm not kidding! Finally, something new, refreshing, utterly bizarre for the kind of music played on American top 40 radio. Ahh . . . . Now, some 15 years later, I find that many young music listeners today have not heard of GN. Perhaps I am a bit biased, but I think that Gary was at least partially responsible for much of the (good) music of the 80's (as well as David Bowie) and much of the techno. Unfortunately I have not kept up on GN as well as I wanted--living in a cultural void can do that to fans. My main reason for writing was to keep up on GN (I thought he had stopped performing & recording), and to find out if ANYONE out there can help me find a GN song. I have a copy of a song that I am 99.9% sure that it's GN, but I don't have a name, nor can I pin it to anything that has been released in the US. I've been a G. N. fan since around 1980 and since then have collected just about all of his album and 12" single releases in the UK. Obviously I've also had ample opportunity to see him in concert, and usually get to see him 3-4 times on each tour (though I missed the '89 one). I agree with others comments on this news page that Sacrifice was his best work for many years - and I rank it along with The Fury, Berserker, Telekon, Pleasure Principle and Metal Rythm as his best albums. In Issue 128, Steve Lilley wrote asking if Berserker and The Fury were also released in extended form. When released in the UK, the cassette version of Berserker was certainly much longer than the vinyl version and undoubtedly better. Although the cassette version of The Fury was identical to the vinyl version, another SLIGHTLY extended version of the cassette was also released (catalogue no as the initial cassette but with 'C' changed to `K`). At least one song (The Skin Mechanic I think) was mixed somewhat differently throughout, while the others were almost identical to the original. Does anyone know whether Gary reads these pages, or is even aware he has a WWW page? Given his interest in 'electronics' and his recent foray into desktop publishing I'd expect him to be an avid surfer. However, I've never seen these pages referred to in the Fan Club magazine and wondered whether a long-term contribuor couldn't write a bit the www page and the Digest and see whether Beryl would like to include it in a future fan club article? He apologized for having allowed the club to lapse so seriously. He was in Canada during most of this time, and managed to meet his finace there. He said he had just completed the latest issue of the Fanzine and was sending them all out ASAP. He also pledged to get back on track with the Fanzines and wanted to keep the club going. In compensation for the long hiatus, he was giving all current members a year long extension to their memberships. It was a good conversation and I hope he is serious this time. The last issue he put out was in August 1994. He has had lapses in the past and has promised to be consistent again in the past. I'm not prepared to endorse the club without reservation until I start to see some consistency again. I did tell him I'd let those current members on the digest know that he was back to running the club. His fiance is going to be helping him put out fanzines from here on out, and he felt that would lessen his workload just enough to allow him to put out monthly fanzines again. I distinctly remember walking through the mall and seeing "Pleasure Principle" displayed in the record store window and thinking to myself "who is that attractive man and what kind of music does he make." Since that day I have been a fan and Gary has always felt like a friend. I proceeded to buy every L.P. and cassette (for the car) as they were released. As our friend from down under had experienced I too heard those words from the "disconnected" that I would grow out of my obsession. WRONG!!!! I may not be listening to an album everyday as I had sworn myself to do so in the good ole days but I definetly have not forgotten. I play no instruments, and have no special skill other than being a Mum and this news group has sparked a light that was burning dull. For that I thankyou all. My daughter thanks you for the dance around the living room while listening to "Are Friends Electric" yesterday morning. P.S. she thought it was great (she's two) I didn't know that Gary was still releasing new stuff and I'll be out in the near future looking for some of it. I/ve got a L.P. collection up to "Strange Charm" with numerous doubles, singles, and picture discs. I was lucky enough to see his "Telekon" tour and all my t-shirts are worn and fadded. I do have a good collection of pins that I'm proud of. Well I guess thats enough for now, thanks again for keeping Gary alive and I'll start working on my C.D. collection. I'll also prepare my top 15 favourite songs with "Jo The Waiter" from "The First Album" being on the top of the list. I have mentioned it to them in the distant past but I think they tend to do what's easiest, reserving the possibility of creating further sales later with compilations etc. How many would have bought the Receiver compilations if it weren't for the b-sides/different versions? I think the Berserker CD will be a simple repressing of the earlier release i.e. the cassette mixes. Ideally, it would be nice to have a double CD set containing the regular version plus b-sides on disc 1 and the extended versions on disc 2. That would be a *wonderful* comprehensive release. I don't know if Gary has the rights to the IRS era material. I doubt it which would exclude the remix of MDM. That also puts in doubt the appearance of Don't Call My Name, Heart and Whisper on the ballad album. Gary mentioned he was rerecording some tracks - perhaps those are the ones in order to get around IRS's stranglehold of the copyright. I believe that if and when "The Fury" gets rereleased on CD, they will be using the extended mixes version rather than the versions that was originally released on back in 1985/6. That would be 51 minutes worth so there would be plenty of room for the b-sides. And Strange Charm, which does not have a extended form, would easily have room for the b-sides. >In other, Numa should redo its catalog titles the same way Beggars >Banquet did theirs, with complete non-LP bonus tracks. Gary must have >approved that for BB to have done it; I cannot imagine why he wouldn't >approve the same thing for re-releases on his OWN label. I don't knw how much control Gary gets over his BB catalogue. I don't think it is much. >What does everyone else think of this? Derek, do you think--once Beryl >has said Numa has green-lighted the re-releases--that this would be a >good idea to bring up? I think it is something I can bring up again but I am sure it has been discussed by Gary and Tony. One can only point out that rereleases with bonus tracks will probably generate sales among people who bought the discs the first time around. It would certainly be a whole lot more exciting than the straight albums. Financially it also makes sense as long as the cost of adding the tracks is not too high. Lilly" Subject: Reissues? To: Gary list Numan Just got my first message from this list and am in heaven already. I am sending my message to Punkboy voicing my support for reissues of "Berserker", "The Fury", et al...I have been looking for these two for some time, and someone keeps posting a "Numan for Sale" list on rec.music.marketplace listing them, only to say he can't part with those two at the moment when you ask about them (QUITE frustrating!) I also agree that adding B-sides would push the interest factor right over the top as far as I'm concerned. Glad someone thought about it... In other dreams...does anyone have VHS of any of Gary's MTV-style videos? Other than "Cars", few of us here in the states have ever been priviliged enough to have seen them. My appetite is whetted (make that ravenous). Again, nice to see this list. Anyone wanting to correspond personally, please feel free to do so. I'll be here in my car if you need me. It's going for $24.95 + $2.06 (Ca. sales tax)+ $3.00 to send it to you via U.S. mail, so for $30.00 US dollars you can get a copy of Sacrifice in your hands. I'm not doing this for any financial gain, I'm just doing it because I'd appreciate it if I didn't have a copy of it, that someone out there could be able to acquire it for me. So here's your chance, if you're interested E-mail me your request and I'll get on the case. Also if anyone knows anything about acquiring videos like "Dream Cor- rosion", "Shadowman" or post Berserker album track videos let me/us know, there are a number of us out here that would love to view them. Plus any info about getting sacrifice on vynil would be most welcome. So contact me via E-mail and let's talk. Take care. Video has always been an irksome problem for the group because unlike CD, there are different international format standards for video and TV (the US, Canada and Japan are NTSC, the UK, Australia, New Zealand are PAL, France is SECAM etc.). The "Shadow Man" and DC videos are UK only video releases and thus they have to be transferred from PAL to NTSC format which can run $30 per hour if done commercially. When "Shadow Man" came out I was able to get a one off deal with a non-net Numan fan who made NTSC copies for the 10 or so people who wanted them. Several people also wanted their own PAL copies so some 4 PAL copies were purchased altogether directly from the UK Fan Club. I obtained Beryl's permission to have the 10 or so NTSC copies made. So, there are a few PAL and a few more NTSC copies around. No commercial release of NTSC copies has been made. With DC, Beryl did mention that they were thnking of making some NTSC copies for NOrth America but I don't think it happened. I can ask next time I call. But again we are on our own. When the North American rep for the UK Fan Club open for business it wil be possible to get the PAL copies and then perhaps an arrangement might be made for some NTSC copies to be made. That reminds me. I'm not sure I collected all the money for the Shadow Man videos back in 1993. I remember taking a $3 deposit but the $7 balance was due when my world came apart in 1993. If anyone has been harbouring pangs of guilt for not paying up please contact me. I could do with the money at the moment :-) Derek __________________________________________________________________________ Derek Langsford "Numanews" dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu The Gary Numan Digest SDSU Dept of Biology email numan-request@cs.uwp.edu San Diego, CA for information or to subscribe __________________________________________________________________________ ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 29 Apr 1995 23:23:36 +1000 From: Donald Neil Pedder Subject: What it means to be a NUMAN FAN To: numan@cs.uwp.edu WARNING! people who are prepared to class the last 5/10 years of NUMAN as "notsogood" may be offended (then again you may "see the light"). This is a BIT LONG but I hope you will persevere. this is an important point for me (and for others too!). Firstly I would like to say that I am fairly comfortable writing this e-mail even though "flaming" doesn't sit comfortably with me. the reason is that I can see from past digests that people in this group are QUITE WILLING to look at another persons viewpoint and CHANGE THEIR MIND (No pun intended). Some people can be very "pig-headed" with their opinions, but that doesn't appear to be the case here! The cause of my angst is "the letter". each reference I saw to this got me all churned up inside, as I disagreed strongly with ANY criticism of GARY for a NUMBER of reasons. 1. Firstly I try to follow the policy of "if you don't have anything nice to say then don't say anything". SURE, people may DISLIKE his recent stuff, but instead of just writing it off, you should apply CONSTRUCTIVE criticism. i.e. this song could be better like this - if you think the song is BEYOND improvement (as some people may) then SHUT-UP! I know it's been said that GARY himself wasn't happy with everything - but that's still no reason. Why kick a dog when he's down? 2. The reason I like NUMAN so much (as noted in my "intro") is the great VARIETY of stuff he comes up with. At this point I will discuss THE SUBJECT! WHAT IS A FAN? Well, the word is obviously derived from FANATIC - and it is my PERSONAL opinion (this is a disclaimer - please don't send any "counter-flames") that if your opinion of someone (in this case GARY) fluctuates according to "what have you done for me lately" then you're not really a FAN. A FAN (of which I am one) looks forward to everything - doesn't think "I HOPE this will be good" SURE I can be disappointed (initially) but that doesn't diminish my anticipation for the next time (more on this soon). I think a TRUE fan looks forward to the next time no matter what happened the last time! (If you're wondering about the generality in my speech here it is because I think this applies to ANY fan - music, sport, whatever). Some have said that SACRIFICE has restored their anticipation for more stuff. Wrong Attitude from my point of view. SPECIFICALLY about FANS of NUMAN. Some people have a mindset with their music that they like a certain style and they don't want to see that changed. You CANNOT have that attitude with NUMAN. He's great because he does stuff like NO-ONE else. And whilst there are things that no-one else has done - there are still avenues to be explored. A lot of people on this list really like TPP. Yeah! Great Album. But how would it be if EVERY album was like it! Imagine GARY releasing TPP II, TPP III, TPP IV, TPP V,etc. Don't you think that would get boring eventually? I do! I mentioned disappointment earlier - Here's the story. I like OUTLAND. It's not one of my all-time favourites , but I LIKE it. But, I must say I was disappointed initially. this was the FIRST time ever I was disappointed by GARY, and you know why? Because it was the FIRST album that wasn't a MAJOR departure from the previous album (METAL RHYTHM). GARY does something different almost every time, and this was the FIRST time he didn't. METAL RHYTHM is a true classic. LIKE IT OR NOT - It is COMPLETELY different to ANYTHING ANYONE has ever done before (think of what classic means - derived from "class". METAL RHYTHM is in a CLASS of it's OWN). Some people don't like it,FINE. Doesn't make it any less of a classic. Now we have OUTLAND. "What? still using those rhythms!" EVERY album before had something distinctive about it, but OUTLAND was ALMOST METAL RHYTHM II (and M+S METAL RHYTHM III). BUT I'm still a FAN and still LOOKING FORWARD. If NUMAN had NEVER released the other stuff I STILL would've liked these albums. NOTE: I think the period DANCE-METAL RHYTHM was the BEST EVER. 1. bring in some SAX. And how about some FUNKY BASS. 2. let's chuck some REAL NOISE in here. 3.Follow that with some neat little stuff with the rhythm section, and (after all these years) let's get some WOMEN in here (I know some of you don't like it but it IS an added dimension - I'm still waitng for a bona-fide duet), and now (4.) let's get REALLY POWERFUL and blow the people out of their lounge-room. 5. let's get almost orchestral with our arranging, and finally (6.) let's REALLY beef up these Rhythms so that melody is almost incidental. 3. I know (now) that DEREK added a cover-note to say that this didn't speak for everyone, but it would've been better if there were TWO letters. Then there would be an alternative letter for people to put their name too if they liked SACRIFICE, but HAVE been happy recently anyway! That's enough from me. I think you get the point. I AM happy to discuss this further should anyone wish to take up on some of these points (and I mean BEYOND just saying "I though MR was shit" - but you should know that now anyway). regards, DONALD PEDDER. never gonna "slide out of SYDNEY and...never go back" ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
