To: numan@cs.uwp.edu just thought I'd publish a technical tip for the benefit of others, as some people's email style is "messy". given responses I've had in the past I shall state NOW that I'm NOT saying people have to do this - this is informational for those who may WANT to use this. it appears that some are not familiar with the ability to use editors in, or in conjunction with, email. I say this as people have words split across 2 lines, etc. the reason I thought this was worth publishing is because (as stated previously) I've worked with computers for near on 10 years - so I know how to "find things out" - and it even took ME a LONG time to find this useful command (so others may have given up in despair - or not even known that this could be done). when you want to post you can create the whole thing BEFORE entering your email system in a file (using youe FAVOURITE editor), and then just send the file. this means you can review what you've written easily before sending. to send the file (after entering subject) type ~r filename . email will then echo the filename and it's size, or say it doesn't exist if you mistyped the name of the file. then just enter the usual "end of message" full-stop. IMPORTANT NOTES - Do NOT have a full-stop on a line by itself. - "terminal" screens are 80 columns wide. if you write a line that goes past the 80th column, your line will get "split" into 2 (with no regard for words than span col. 80). ALSO note that this means your "last letter" must be BEFORE col. 80 as "carriage restore" is also a character. I don't know if this works for ALL versions of email - but it works for mine. If anyone knows how to achieve the same thing with NNTP Newsgroup postings (i.e. NOT email based groups), can you tell me 'cos I don't know how to do it in that case. And while on matters technical - I though I'd point out my new signoff. I've just received my order form from the GN fan club for Babylon 1-7. A series of seven 'mini albums', covering those tracks not available on cd from the period Beserker to Sacrifice. Whilst the ommission of Shame and the Are Friends Electric remix is regretable, the fact that two previously unreleased tracks, Tribal (from the Fury session I think) and Metal Beat (from either Machine and Soul or Sacrifice), plus the long awaited Mistasax Version 1. The first is to be released in mid-June, with the rest following at three weekly intervals. The track listing for Babylon 1 is:- Beserker (no version listed) My Dying Machine (no version listed) Here Am I Empty Bed Empty Heart She Cries Rumour Now for the first time (though its probably happened before), I noticed that I am able to order multiple copies. So if anyone is interested I am willing to order copies of these on their behalf, providing I receive the money in advance, by JUNE 15th. They will cost me 7.50, the postage is about 3.00, and I will charge 1.50 for my time coming to a total of 12.00 pounds. All payment must be in pounds sterling, cheques/money orders made payable to Leon Smith. The address is:- 5 Penyturnpike View, Penarth, South Glamorgan. Wales, UK. CF64 2QH. Now I know I will be making a little money on this, but believe me that is not my objextive. I find the lack of Numan material frustrating and I live in Wales, I can only imagine how bad it must be in the rest of the world. If you think I am likely to rip you off, or that its wrong for me to do this, then don't order. I realise this is based on trust, but I am only trying to provide a service to fellow Numan fans they wouldn't otherwise have. I hope this offer is taken in the spirit it is intended. Well, take heart: compared to the negative or dark *heterosexual* references in his lyrics, the "gay" ones come off looking fairly playful :-) Gary's forte has always been dark and negative; I, anyway, have always liked his material best when it's blackest, and I love the very early (first album and before) stuff a lot. I sympathized with it when I was younger because I was a morbid kid -- the sullen teen punk syndrome -- and Gary was so eloquently hopeless. :-) Sounds like he was something of a depressed kid himself. I still like my music dark. :-) >And is the Every Day I die line a >reference to the song, about masturbation ? I always thought it was undisputably so! I've suspected Jo the Waiter may be a reference to masturbation as well; J.O. is used as an abbreviation for Jerk Off. The Replicas lyrics (and some of the outtakes, I think, like "We Have a Technical") are supposedly based on a novel Gary was trying to write at the time. I've always very much wanted to read it. Andy, did you ever think "The Iceman Comes" had gay overtones? I always did. Unrelatedly, it's one of the two or three cuts from Warriors (probably my least favorite album, vying with Outland) I find listenable. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi Numan fans, Through the TubeWay page on the Internet I heard about a Numan-digest. I subscribed and was asked to introduce myself. My name is Nilo de Roock, live in Rotterdam, The Netherlands. I work as a Software Engineer for Uniface Technology in Amsterdam, am 36 years old and a Gary Numan fan since 'Telekon' was released. Gary has never been very popular in my country, so I am looking forward to hear something from the fans abroad. My top five of Gary Numan songs is: 1. Noise Noise 2. Slowcar to China 3. This is my House 4. Remind me to smile 5. This is New Love. Other artists I like are Donald Fagen and David Sylvian. As far as I know 'Berserker' and 'Strange Charm' are not yet released on CD. Why is this so? Is someone working on trying to get them released? I only recently heard that Gary released a new album last year called 'Desire'. I haven't got it yet (Numan albums are hard to come buy in record stores in The Netherlands, have to order them by mail here...). Is it in the line of 'Machine+Soul'? I was rather disappointed by that album. One other question: I once lost the CD 'Metal Rhytm'. It was later released as 'New Anger', 'Metal Rhytm' was no longer for sale. I didn't like the mixes at all on the 'New Anger' album. Does anybody know where I can get a copy of 'Metal Rhytm'? I've been listening to Gary Numan ever since "Cars" blew up the states when I was but a wee youngin'. I shortly there- after snatched up Telekon, Are F E?, and Tubeway stuff. I'm 24 now, so I've been listening to MR. N for at least 10 years or more. Interesting Numan tidbit: I was in London about a month ago and I shopped for records everywhere. I kept coming across autographed Numan records here and there at moderate prices. Anyway, I went to this small little shop next to the GOODMIXERS pub in Camden Town, and in the "Everything for 50p" bin was an autographed lp of Berzerker(?)-i think that's what it's called. It haS a blue and white cover, anyway i'm not into it musically, but for 50p, i snatched it up. I showed it to the store owner and he didn't seem to care about giving it away at such a cheap price! ...............that's it . My name is Michael Rush and I live in Dublin, Ireland. I have been a fan since the early years, circa 1978. I have almost every album, but while growing up in Ireland it was not always easy to pick up the latest releases of his music. Now that I travel a bit (and have a little more cash), I am able to add to my collection regularly, both CD and Video. The latest purchase being Sacrifice - which I really like (Gary can really write some great love songs). My most favourite period of Gary was the early stuff - Replicas and The Pleasure Principle - I am a big fan of the synth (I got lost in the early eighties somewhere). Gary has never played in Ireland. Therefore I finally realised a dream of mine and travelled to London to see him live in the London Apollo in Nov. '93 -> Dream Corrosion Tour. It was everything I hoped it would be. Just recently I picked up the video of the same concert. Are there plans for any UK concerts in the near future ???? Other favourite bands/groups of mine are Tangerine Dream, Kraftwerk, Jean-Michel Jarre. I also like much of the Ambient music of today, which I think (and forgive me if I offend anyone) Gary has influenced from his early years (its that synth thing again). I don't play an instrument, but I have a Casio keyboard at home that I play around with on those boring days. I have promised myself one day that I will learn to play and then buy a full synth of some kind. What more can I say. I never noticed him credit the original in any liner notes, but I swear it's Tears For Fears "Shout" rhythm track that he's using. Listen to the song when the beat kicks and and you'll hear it. And to the guy asking about Marilyn Manson: I have both their CD and the CD5 in question. To my knowledge the CD5 is NOT our of print. It may not be kept in stock at most stores, but they should be able to order it for you. They are an interesting band; their version of DITP is good. It's not a dramatic reworking of the song, but it is a heavier and darker version that Gary's. Trent Reznor's production is not as obvious on that song as it is on the rest of the CD5. I quickly realize that the made-for-cable movie I'm watching, called "Midnight Tease," is one of those stupid late night soft-core movies that show gratuitous amounts of implant boosted breasts and silicone injected buttocks. Just as I'm about to move on (had to oogle a little), the scene changes and the two main characters are talking to each other on the beach while in the background, much..much..much to my horror, I hear the instrumental parts to "Love Isolation" (from _Machine & Soul_) playing. I had to watch the rest of the movie at this point, and not only did I not hear anymore Numan music, but I didn't see him mentioned in the credits at the end either. If that's dismissive, then I apologize. My point last week was that this just isn't an important point and I fail to see why it was brought up to begin with. Apparantly, I just see things differently than Mr. Pedder, but to me block capitals strike me as shouting. This may seem silly to him, but I *know* that many others feel this way as well. What I am resisting is any attempt to create some uniformity on this issue. Just use the format you are comfortable with and leave it at that. I've never met a computer science major (or anyone associated with computers for that matter) who was so dense that they confused the use of *around a word or sentence* to convey emphasis for being a computer command. I don't particularly care about the differences between university conventions and the outside world. Emphasis can be conveyed through *..* or BLOCK CAPITALS, or !!!. All work, and whether one method is more "logical" or not just isn't that important. As for the exclusive use of quotation marks argued here last week by Mr. Pedder, I can only say that singles have always been listed in this manner in the "outside world" in discographies. ------- I don't feel that Numan was kicked when he was down in the letter sent to him. Mr. Pedder's argument assumes that Numan was/is as distraught about those 3 albums as Mr. Pedder was/is over his broken engagement. Personally, I see a huge difference between the two (that's my assumption); one is very personal, the other was a career mistake from someone who has been in the public's eye for over 10 years at the time of the albums in question. If anything, the letter might have dispelled any lingering disillusions that Numan might have been harbouring that those albums were going in the proper direction. The slightly (to me) negative feedback might have come across as constructive criticism from a group of extremely loyal fans who actually care about his career. ---- I made a mistake about the "Dark Light" release in last week's digest. The CD EP will be released on 15 May 1995. The whole album will be released in early June (probably 1 June 1995 according to the guy at ABCD). Sorry about that. ------ The _Judybats_ cover appears on the "Daylight" CD single b/w "Alliwanntdois Fuck Your Hair" and "Cars" on Sire records. Personally, I think this is one of the better covers made. The group did a tasteful rendition that didn't strike me as being derogatory but complimentary. Sadly, the single comes in one of those annoying "enviromentally safe" cardboard cases. ------- I apologize for forgetting your name, but to the person who helped _Jack 'o' Nuts_ cover "My Shadow In Vain", do you know where I might find a copy of this EP? I've had no luck here in Denver. -------- Add my vote to putting the digest on a biweekly schedule and against it being a Newsgroup. That example of "Gary Newman" was spot on. As a digest, we remain a forum only for those who care enough to join and participate (even those I disagree with). ______ If anyone is able to find out what Marilyn Manson single contains the "Down In The Park" cover, please let the rest of us know. I'll certainly do the same. _____ Me! I Disconnect From You ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 15 May 1995 23:37:26 -0600 (MDT) From: "BRIAN D. HAMMOND" Subject: Various Thoughts II To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Sorry, I'm back with just a couple more thoughts. ---- I'd love it if Numa would release these box sets. I prefer the method suggested by Derek last week, but find it unlikely that they'll release it this way. Some sort of continuation of the _Asylum_ series by Numa would be very nice. ----- Since Mr. Pedder's definitions of version, edit, mix, etc... was only a suggestion and he was only looking for feedback, then, with no offense intended, (and nothing personal), I don't like it. These definitions don't come naturally to me. The same person who might confuse "Cars (Classic)" with "Cars" would instead confuse "Cars Mix", "Cars "Version" or "Cars Edit" unless they were privy to these definitions from the beginning. I'd rather have to explain that I'm refering to the "Cars 'E' Reg Model" mix rather than the "Cars (Sprint)" version, for example, than to explain what my definitions for these terms are. I still feel that refering to the songs like the labels do will suffice and where there is some confusion, as in the "Cars" remixes, a simple one line clarification should do the trick. That's my vote on this issue. Mr. Pedder is right, I was wrong, an Edit does not imply that the version is shorter (although this *is* definition 4 in my dictionary). Having said that, this was not the point. Regardless, the "Magic (Extended Edit)" will work fine for identifying that version rather than using specific definitions that don't come naturally (to me) and aren't followed by the industry. ------ Me!
