To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Thanks to the kind consideration of a local independent record-store merchant who knows by now that I love GN, the "Dark Light" EP is in my hands (knowing now the same tracks will surface on the full CD, I still need the EP to tide me over...can you say addiction?) ;) The cover? White. It`s a NEGATIVE image of Gary at the mike in a hot leather jacket with steel bars on either side. The picture is slightly pixillated...quite striking and artsy. I am impressed. The music? It starts with "Bleed" (the only song from "sacrifice" on the EP). It sounds like real drums in tandem with the samples, mixed louder than on the original and therefore I think a bit more powerful. Gary seems to take a verse to hit his stride but very nice indeed. Next..."Everyday I Die", followed by "Dream Police". On both the arrangements are darker, more forboding and more dense. They both seem to mesh well with his "Sacrifice" style. "Everyday I Die" especially slams. This song get's em looking at me at the stop lights. Finally, "Listen to the Sirens", sounding a bit sloppy in parts but fun (it, frankly, made me want to pogo a couple of times). This really has me up for the full album. A great job, a nice mix, and the old songs sound downright new again. The only thing about the Cd that bothered me is the fact that it contains a post-paid card for UK fans to join the Fan Club. The lack of that contact here in the States is really beginning to upset me (although it's probably saving my bank account!)... Side note...IRS used to carry Numan T-shirts. I will call the merchandise number if it's still up and let you all know if they have any still around. Cross your fingers. Peace. Initial reactions: sounds good, but perhaps too good. In other words, it seems to me that Gary is indulging in a little too much post-performance studio noodling. It almost sounds as though he recorded in a studio and then tacked applause samples on the end of "Bleed." Now, I know I couuld be completely wrong on this, but it sounds fishy. On the other hand, the sound is so much better than "Dream Corrosion" that I should probably just clam up and be grateful. What Gary has most likely done is make the sound on this so good that you would be a fool to buy the sucky sounding bootleg (I almost did). The old stuff on it: "Every Day I Die," "The Dream Police," and "Listen to the Sirens" is great stuff. I still prefer the "EDID" on "Touring Principle," but this one is a close second. "Listen to the Sirens" could have stronger bass. Gary, I really miss the strong bass! If Gary really sounded as good as this EP, and not as poor as the bootleg (thank heavens for sample listens at the local Cd store), then it only makes me that much more upset that I'll probably never see him in concert. I can't wait to see what Mr. Pedder has to say about the fact that Gary uses no capitals on his "dark light" ep (just a friendly poke in the ribs) :-).... Thanks, Trevor S. It contains four songs which are Bleed, Everyday I Die, The Dream Police and Listen To The Sirens. Of the four I really like the way Everyday I Die was done. Also the cover art is the best I've seen in awhile except maybe for the Cars single that came out awhile ago. Also inside the CDS was a postcard that can be filled out and returned that asks some basic questions. My question concerning this is can Numan fans in the states mail this in and get a response? I really don't want to mail it as I liked to keep it, unless of course by mailing it in I can join the Fan Club or be part of the NUMIND. The atmosphere of the set and the intro was tuly gothic reminiscent of sisters of Mercy's 'Corrosion'. However surely with a gig such as this the people there are there to see the front man (Gary) after all the band changes reasonably often. People such as Ced receive a welcome but at this gig there was a guitarist called Kipper who had a large enough ego to act as though people were as interested in him as Gary. Now I don't know about anyone else that saw this tour but the guy just annoyed me as being completely pretentious. Ah well the concert it self made up for it with as usual plenty of early stuff mixed with the bits from the new album. I noticed in the last mailing that people are already planning their attendance at the next round of concerts, could such people as know send the possible tour dates. -- "I'll be your Vampire calling in the dead of night." The first impression I got was that the album will be at least as cool as Dream Corrosion. The EP's track listing is Bleed, Everyday I Die, Dream Police, and Listen to the Sirens. Bleed was a tad disappointing because it is not as powerful as the studio version. The intro sounds like it's just a tape and when the band comes in, the drums in particular don't have the force of the Sacrifice version. Everyday I Die was very cool. The intro is different than any previous version I've heard and the song is given a forceful live rendering. Gary seems to be not only going back into his early catalog more for live sets, but really opening up the songs he chooses and giving them a new lease on life. The Dream Police was AWESOME! Very rocking! Listen to the Sirens was cool but sounded a bit rushed and under-rehearsed. Gary flubs the lyrics more than once. Still, the rough-edged rendering of the song does, I guess, have some punk authenticity. There was also a postcard for the Numan fan club and NUMIND which, sadly, is useless for those of us in the states. Don't know who's running the show at NuFederation (hell, maybe it's Gary) but the sleeve art is improving. I Disconnect From You ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 03 Jun 1995 22:01:11 -0600 (MDT) From: LUKET@yvax.byu.edu Subject: Why I love Warriors To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Numan Fans, I know that I've already offered some comments about "dark light" to this week's letter, but I have a real deep personal need to defend one of my favorite Numan albums. Back in 1985 I was in the deepest throws of my Numan addiction. I travelled all over the D.C. metropolitan area trying to buy as much Numan as I could find. When I found LP's I had to buy singles too in order to hear the B sides (let's face it, he's created some of the best out there). I had all of the albums up to that point except "Warriors." I only knew of it through articles in various rock encyclopedias and discographies. I had seen a picture of Numan dressed in his circa Warriors "Mad Max" wear, and was dying to hear the sound that accompanied that strange nu-image. I kept bothering the local merchants about securing me a copy, but all they could say was, "It's out of print and you'll just have to pray that it comes in used." Pray was right, at that time used Numan vinyl was hard to get. People there were snatching it up quick. Those who got it were fanatics like me and reluctant to give it up. I had purchased "White Noise" and loved it. It exposed me to "This Prison Moon," "Sister Surprise," and "The Iceman Comes." As I hadn't seen those elsewhere, I figured they must be from Warriors. They were three of my favorite tracks on the double album (I believe that this performance of "Sister Surprise" which combines the best elements of the album and single versions with the passion of live performance is the best version of the song). Then I found the shape picture disc of the "Warriors" single. Wow, not only was it the coolest picture disc I'd ever seen (a picture of a Saab Viggen Swedish jet fighter, I love planes too), but the song "Warriors" really took off on the chorus, Bill Nelson added some cool eastern sounding E-bow guitar, the Bass riff was inhumanly wild, in short. . . I was in love with it. Then I flipped over the single and played "My Car Slides." What an ethereal B side? It sounded as slippery and smooth as the title, a driftingly cool trip to a peaceful crash into the next world. I had to have this album!! When I finally got a copy of the album I was impressed. Why? It was one of the most original albums I'd ever heard. Trouser Press has called it laughable. They can kiss my ass! The use of bass is completely unique. No pop music artist has used fretless bass lines in quite the same way. The rhythm is dominant. Like "I, Assassin" the drums, drum machines, and extra percussion instruments when coupled with the groovenest bass I've ever heard create a wall of rhythm that astounds. The Bill Nelson icing works. I wish the two would collaborate again. I get the feeling that things probably didn't work too well between them on a personal level though. The E-bow guitar lofts like its on wing over the rest of the mix. It adds a dramatic touch. The sax? Many people don't like Numan's use of jazz. I like it. While everyone else plays safe with their namby pamby Northeastern big band licks Numan goes with the sulty drunken Growl of the New Orleans style licks. Gutsy and rude. Ballsy. The Carribean rhythms on "I Am Render" and "Iceman" are well handled. "Iceman" is one of the most haunting pieces Gary ever wrote. The lyrics are interesting. They say enough to open your imagination and let you play with the scenario. "These boys of passion are nothing more than faggots," well, it sounds pretty non-politically correct, but I have always felt that he was not taking a poke at homosexuals as much as New Romantics once again. (some gays don't like extremely feminine men and super masculine lesbians). But I love the groove of the song it's in. "This Prison Moon" is as wonderfully frigid and imaginative as "Iceman," but more danceable. In this particular instance I'd say that the female vocalist and sax really work well. The chorus is just plain cool. "If only the sun would shine tonight"? Cool lyrics. What an image! Talk about Isolation. The gong splash at the end is the perfect ending for the song. The album isn't as smooth in its production as some of the others. BB really stiffed him on the cash end of the project. It's part of the reason he left them. The image is unusual. True. But when was his ever run of the mill? The sound isn't as synthy. Well, Gary was exploring other avenues (i.e. bass licks that kill). I still say that Warriors is one of his best because it is one of his most unique. It is unique from his others and sure as hell different from anything anyone else has ever done. There are some Bill Nelson elements, but these sure aren't Bill Nelson tunes. I simply believe that Gary was once again too daring for the music industry and most fickle mush head listeners out there who would rather hear the same old crap rewritten with the latest technology, in the latest music fashion craze. I hail Gary as one of the few artists who truly did his own thing. I hail Warriors as a prime example of what "his own thing" is. Trevor. I vote for pleasure I vote for sleep I vote for power that I can keep I vote for words that no one hears I'm only here for a thousand years here on this prison moon.
