The Definitive Poll - Update 1 The FAQ is under construction! ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Wed, 07 Jun 1995 19:06:48 -0600 (MDT) From: LUKET@yvax.byu.edu Subject: "dark light" To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Numanoids, I just picked up a copy of "dark light." First let me say that $30 dollars US is capricious even for one this good. What has happened to the price of imports? Next they're going to be asking for spare organs. Anyhow, I LOVE IT!!! The "Sarcrifice" tracks, IMO, are better live than they are on the original, especially "Desire." My one disappointment was in "I Dream of Wires." This is one of my all time favorites, and the vocals were poorly mixed. The intro to the song seemed to be done partly with tape play-back from the original. My hands down favorite on this double live CD would have to be "Replicas." Perhaps some of you will disagree, but this is one of my favorites from the album "Replicas," and it comes off surprisingly well live. I kind of miss the female backing vocalists on a couple of the songs ("Hunter," "Scar"). They seem to be largely superfluous for most of the songs and I'm glad they weren't intruding in songs where they didn't belong (sometimes in the past they were). I can understand why Gary left them out, but the guy who sang backing vocals sucked. "Noise, Noise" has better sound than the "Dream Corrosion" version, but the guitar was better handles on "DC." I also feel that the guitarist is kind of a show-off who isn't that good, technically speaking. I am grateful, however, that I didn't have to waste money on yet another performance of "Down in the Park," "Cars," and "We Are Glass." On the whole I am very pleased with this live rendition, and though it could have been a tad more energetic in places, the sound is so much better than "Skin Mechanic," and "Dream Corrosion," that there is little reason to complain. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if I listen to the live tracks taken from "Sacrifice" more often than "Sacrifice" itself. As a side note, my favorite local record store played "dark light" when I went in to look for it. The salesman liked it so much that he decided to buy a copy for himself. That is the first time I've heard Numan played in a record store! I just hope it makes the indie charts in England, 'cause this one deserves it far more than "DC." BTW, other surprising inclusions on the CD are "praying to the aliens," "do you need the service," "meanstreet," "friends," and "stormtrooper in drag." All of them are well performed and sound good too :-)! I can't say that I am looking forward to them. Gary doing an 'unplugged' album? Just now that he was on the right direction again with the Sacrafice CD he is doing this... Does anyone agree? I read quit some discussions about re-releasing Berserker (and Strange Charm and The Fury as well). What is the exact status on this subject? By the way I occasionally see copies of The Fury in record stores here in Holland. Why don't I see any discussion about re-releasing Metal Rhytm? I read that Derek posted a letter to Gary thanking him for his excellent work on Sacrifice. Has Gary replied at all to this letter? I do have some items that I am willing to trade: - Pleasure Principle Video - Berserker Video - Micro Music Video (1hr54 mins version) - Radio Heart single including 'The River' - New Anger CD single - BB collection 2CD's on 1 - Asylum 3 (Living Ornaments) - The Fury CD (if I can still pick one up here) Video's are in PAL. I am interested in - Metal Rhtym CD - Strange Charm CD - (and Berserker CD off course). I live in Holland and was just thinking of subscribing to the UK Numan fanclub but I read somewhere that they don't accept any non-UK members is this true? I read some discussions about setting up a FAQ for Numan (-related subjects). I would surely appreciate it. Just wanted to throw this idea out...I obtained some info from a company in Florida called Custom CD. In a nutshell, you send them cassettes, LPs, CDs, DATs, etc. and they can create a gold master CD from it, as well as press aluminum CD copies after the master is created. ($40 for a 74 min master CD, $35 for a 63 min master, then $15 per aluminum CD copy). I propose the "hypothetical" scenario of someone taking a DAT copy of the Berserker CD that the fan club released, appending "Empty Bed...", "Here Am I", and "She Cries" to that DAT tape, and having Custom CD make CDs from it, depending on amount of interest. Similarly, how about CDs pressed from DAT masters from the Micromusic video, the Live at the Roxy 1977 LP, the BBC in concert radio LPs, etc. Any thoughts? Two quick items: For sale: "Dark Light" 12" vinyl ep $9 ppd Dark Light 2CD set is brilliant. "Stormtrooper in Drag" was a nice surprise. HAMMOND" Subject: Discography Questions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Answers to a few questions from last week's digest: The _Photograph_ LP was a West German pressing from 1981. It is extremely rare. It was pulled after Numan and family balked over something they didn't like about it (or perhaps the record contract they'd agreed to?) and only about 3,000 copies made it to market. Many consider it to be the rarest Numan item, but personally I've found other pieces of vinyl to be more elusive. In fact, I found a copy of it once in Denver for a whopping $3.00! Anyway, it is a compilation LP and contains nothing unique. Even rarer than the LP is the cassette which also got released in limited copies before being pulled. I'm still trying to find a copy of that.... The "Blue Album" simply refers to the original, very first pressing of the _Tubeway Army_ LP on limited edition (3,000) blue vinyl. This is a pretty hard find and all blue vinyl copies sport a blue cover that says "Tubeway Army" and a gatefold sleeve with the lyrics on the inside of the gatefold. All blue vinyl copies predate the white sleeved _Tubeway Army_ by a couple of months. The track listings are identical. The song "Photograph" (not to be confused with the LP mentioned above) was the original B-side to the "This Wreckage" 7" single. Hope this helps. Me! I Disconnect From You ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 11 Jun 1995 12:14:57 +1000 From: Donald Neil Pedder Subject: DONALD's "critcisms" To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I am aware that a number of people have, for a number of reasons, misconstrued ideas I have been trying to get across. I would just like to make clear my position on a few things - and YES, accept some things that I have done "wrong" - before you get COMPLETELY frustrated with me, and vice-versa. - it has been pointed out to me that when I have addressed a POINT raised by someone, they MAY see that I am "attacking" them PERSONALLY, rather than just dealing with the point. When I mention someones NAME in association with a point, it is like when you are at a P&C meeting or the like, and the SPEAKER says "and now to the point raised by Mr. SUCHANDSUCH..." - In addressing the point, I am giving CREDIT to the person who brought it up. If I in some way "criticize" the point, I am NOT criticizing the person! I'm SORRY if anyone took any of the responses in the wrong way - NOW that the situation is clearer, I hope that no-one else will be offended in a similar way. - Some have the impression that I have come in as a "newbie" with the attitude of "you're all doing it wrong - do it THIS way!". This is NOT correct. I HAVE made a number of suggestions, but they are just that - SUGGESTIONS. If you don't like it, you can leave it (be my guest!). HOWEVER, the motivation behind them is to promote UNDERSTANDING within the group. the use of EDIT,etc. being a good example. I wasn't TELLING people what to do - I was merely saying that there was a way to make themselves CLEARER, and thus avoid "uneccessary" posts seeking clarification. I HOPED that people would see the sense in my idea, rather than get defensive over whatever method they currently use. I have generally stated this in the postings, but for whatever reason, people have gone and read the posting in a "tone" that wasn't intended. i.e. people have perceived the posts as being an arrogant "do this", rather than a meeker "here's an idea with MERIT for you to consider". - in association with both of the above points I would like to point out that I have NEVER said "you're wrong". If you think for a moment on my position regarding "pointing out GARY's mistakes", then it would be clearly HIPPOCRITICAL of me to do so - and I'm NOT like that. The ONLY situation where I would outright say "you're wrong" is where it is demonstrably the case. e.g. if someone wrote "2+1=4". Where "opinions" are involved, I would never presume to do so (I would just suggest what I thought to be BETTER - take it or leave it). - so in regards to "the letter".... - I didn't say "this is wrong", I said "perhaps a different tact would've been better" (and I KNOW that I'm not alone on THIS). - whilst having a go at the ideas conveyed in the letter, I WASN'T attacking DEREK. Although he was the "author", there were 49 other people who agreed with him. My concern was the letter, not DEREK. - I was UPSET by the criticism of GARY, and was seeking to let other people know WHY this was. If you consider this then clearly "arrogance" was an incorrect tone to attribute to my post. I MAY have come on a bit "strong", but remember, I was upset. - I would STILL like to see a debate over "the ROLE of a (NUMAN) fan". a couple of people have put forward their opinions. How about some more? I am looking for an "exchange of ideas", not an "argument". This leads to a better understanding of where other people stand with their views. - the CAPITALS issue. I realized something this week that I would like to share. As I've said previously, I still use the same email style that I used when I was working. HOWEVER, something struck me this week. Even though I still use capitals for emphasis/names as before, the APPEARANCE of my email's has changed for one simple reason - I am NOW discussing NUMAN. I am now speaking MORE emphatically. After all, wouldn't you get more enthusiastic talking about GN, rather than some work-related matter. This means that the IMPACT of capitalizing a persons name gets "lost" in the "sea of emphasis". As such, I am going to "cut back" on my emphasis (and hope that you would know where it would be) in order for names to regain their "status". i.e. I will only "emphasize" in extreme cases, rather than ALL cases (well, I'll TRY anyway. It's hard to break habits). TREVOR last week commented on GARY not using capitals on DARK LIGHT. "I'm so distraught I think I'll KILL myself!". SERIOUSLY, he brings up a GOOD POINT. A CD cover isn't "covered with words". The digest is a "sea of words". Using capitals for names, turns the names into ISLANDS in the "sea of words". THIS is what I was trying to say in the first place (but didn't say very well). After I had addressed the points raised by people over the poll, I knew SOMEONE else had made a reference to me. I "skimmed" the digest looking for it, but didn't find it. This meant I had to virtually re-read the digest word-for-word to find it. IRONICALLY it was on this very issue! IF my name had been in capitals it would've been easier to find. That's ALL I'm saying. (And easier again if you'd made the point in a NEW paragraph, TREVOR. :-) ). I won't say ANYTHING else on this matter. It's up to you guys to decide (individually) if you can see the USEFULNESS of it. I think that's pretty much it. IF I've forgotten something then just bear in mind that I am WELL-INTENTIONED, and not some "know-it-all" trying to throw my weight around. O.K.? My posts are intended to be THOUGHT-PROVOKING, not PROVOKING full-stop. "I'm waiting for this thing to end. All I can do now is wait for the noise........" DONALD PEDDER. I've posted to this list a couple of times over a long period (it must've been years, ahem): I've been interested in matters Numaniacal since Are Friends Electric first made a splash here in the UK, but age and a complicated life have rather mellowed me since my teenage completist phase. That and the fact that his last N albums have left me cold -- once a man's discovered George Clinton, ersatz white funk becomes a tad pallid. I digress. I still have a great fondness for the early stuff and listen to everything from That's Too Bad to Warriors from time to time. It's with some delight, therefore, that I report a favourable review from Q Magazine (The Modern Guide To Music And More), which is a very popular UK publication aimed at grown-ups who still get a teenage kick from good pop music. Unfortunately, I've lost the magazine! The review's of a recent re-issue of Replicas on mid-price CD; the album gets four stars (out of five; a four-star album is supposedly very fine indeed) and a hearty round of applause. Look it up if you can; perhaps someone else can repost it? The review also mentions a couple of famous US rock stars who've recently either quoted Numan as an influence or perform covers of his; it implies that this is part of a big reassessment going on and it's now fashionable to admit to liking the stuff. Anyone noticed this? One final point: a lot of John Foxx's stuff is now available again on CD. If you like pre-flight Numan (*), buy Metamatic, The Garden and the first couple of Ultravox albums. Money back if not satisfied. Rupert Goodwins, rupert_goodwins@zd.com (*)I have a theory that it all started going wrong after he got his pilot's licence -- I can remember him performing something from Warriors on Top Of The Pops (UK teen pop TV prog) with a big smirk on his face because, as the compere informed us, 'he's just passed his flying test). (I still can't listen to Outland and Machine+Soul). I feel Gary's current material is an improvement, but not much as some of you on the list think it is. I did think the "Absolution" single was pretty good, especially the beginning "A-oh" of "Magic" (Trick Mix), which is now the sound my E-Mail program makes when I have new mail. I would like to travel to England next year for the '96 tour, since I haven't seen Gary live since 1982. If anyone can supply me with information on obtaining tickets, I would appreciate it. Toronto is usually a great source for Gary's stuff, but I've never seen it like this before! I was looking for SACRIFICE, and wasn't disapointed. Just tons of his different albums, CD singles -- all sorts of great stuff. Had I known it was going to be that good I would have taken "requests" and picked up stuff for people. The three best places were HMV, Sam's, and A&A. I don't know if any of them do any mail-order sales, but it might be worth a try if someone's looking for something. You'd have to call information for the proper phone numbers and addresses, but hey, give it a shot -- all it will cost is the price of a phobe call! Note that I didn't see anything rare (no, there weren't any copies of BERSERKER on CD), but pretty much everything else! Oh, yeah, I bought a GN t-shirt in NYC many years ago in some weird shop in some side street. It was (I think) for REPLICAS. That was the only timer I ever saw GN merchandise (besides buttons) in the states. ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 7 Jun 1995 13:59:49 -0700 From: "Martin R. Olah" Subject: Numan vs. Tears for Fears To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The drums samples Gary Numan has used recently sound like old Digidesign sound chips. I have them, and apparently Tears for Fears did also when recording Shout. Since they are very distinctive and the drum tracks in question are similar, it is natural that people assume someone is getting their song ripped off. In fact, I believe that the true source of the sample is from When The Levee Breaks, by Led Zeppelin. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 5 Jun 1995 08:26:14 -0500 (CDT) From: Amy E Logsdon Warner Subject: questions To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Does anyone recall Gary ever appearing on Saturday Night Live? No bad and a nice change from the black artwork of late and the poses seen on "Dream Corrosion", "Ghost" and "white Noise" covers. This is Gary's second 2 CD concert release in less than 12 months. Some might think that is excessive and that this album is probably superfluous. I'd have to disagree. There are only five tracks in common with last eyars "Dream Corrosion" album (Noise Noise, Remind Me to Smile, Are 'Friends' Electric?, Jo the Waiter and I'm an Agent) making it a welcome collection. Another vital different is that this comes after a highly praised album by his fans that has halted the decline in Gary's support. "Dream Corrosion" was a between album tour where Gary was still formulating his new sound and coming off a somewhat disappointing album, "Machine and Soul". For this tour Gary omitted a female backing vocalist but kept the remainder of the band that played on the DC tour, including Kipper and Ade Orange. The sound is not too dissimilar to DC as a result but with Kipper and Ade Orange helping out on backing vox, sometimes to great effect ('Magic'), other times not ('The Hunter'). The overall performance has energy and life. Gary seems to be comfortable and enjoyed himself. Pray, the opening track on "Sacrifice" is used as the concert intro and gets cut off just before the beat starts as a very faithful performance of 'A Question of Faith" takes off. Gary's vocals are in good form as he handles this song with more accuracy than I think I have ever heard before. Perhaps the "Sacrifice" songs are more in Gary's natural vocal range. One could almost believe that he tinkered with it in the studio to make them sound this good. One of the impressive things about this performance is the song choice. Gary delves back into his Beggars banquet catalogue for a majority of the material (8 tracks from "Sacrifice", 1 from" Berserker" *16* from pre-1984). "I Dream of Wires" is performed faithfully with strong synth sounds but without the heavy drumming that was so impressive on the original. 'Noise Noise' a new favourite from the DC tour is done well, but the female vox is missing and Kipper and Ade don't quite cut it. I prefer the DC version. Interestingly much of the material comes from Gary's first few albums. 'Listen to the Sirens', 'Everyday I Die', 'Friends', 'Praying to the Aliens', 'Replicas' and 'Meanstreet' on disc 1 alone. 'Listen' is faithful to the original, EdID is much more sinister and mature than the previous live performance (Living Ornaments?). It is re-energized. Gary handles the rapid fire lyrics on 'Friends' with surprising adeptness as he does on disc 2 with 'Do You Need the Service'. 'Praying to the Aliens" doesn't work for me due to the quick pace and the use of guitar where synth would have been better. 'Meanstreet', not a song I am totally familiar with seems faithful to the "Plan's" punchy sound. Inserted among these older songs are two "Sacrifice" tracks. 'Scar' doesn't seem to gel. The backing vocals are flat and the instruments seem discordant. 'Magic' comes out much better. It's hard to tell if the intro is taped or actually played or programmed. Still, the performance is good. Disc 2 opens with a surprise - 'Stormtrooper in Drag'. Again a fairly straightlaced and good job done. 'Deadliner' has heavier percussion, perhaps because of the live ratherthan programmed drums, but the backing synth is a little weak and it fails to have the impact it should. 'Bleed' the lead-off song on the now superflous EP (why did they put it out and label it stating all the tracks were on the album?), has Kipper adding some extra(neous) guitar in the later stages but overall it is again a true to the album rendition. 'Dream Police' is upbeat and updated. Excellent. 'I Die; you Die' should perhaps die or at least be omitted from a few tours. This song which rarely gets a performance that imparts the atmosphere of the original, one of my favourite studio tracks of Gary's, gets short changed again with a rushed, guitar laden, synth lite treatment. Time to put that one to bed for a while I think. Another surprise is 'The Hunter' which is performed with mixed results. Added percussion lift the song from it's original rut (can you tell it's not favourite :-), and adds texture but Kipper gets a little carried away on guitar and the backing vocals are inneffective substracting from would have been a better than the original interpretation. 'Remind Me to Smile' is performed in Gary's "power style" essentially the same as on DC. 'Are 'Friends' Electric?' gets a similar DC treatment but without the long intro. A welcome and refreshing approach. The crowd don't do too well with the response to "You know I hate to ask?" Gary's been milking the AFE intro for too long so this change is welcome. As indicated earlier, Gary handles 'Do You Need the Service' with aplomb but again Kipper goes over the top. Sigh. 'Love and Napalm' works well, and the finale is two songs that were big successes on the DC tour. 'Jo the Waiter' and 'I'm an Agent' again with little change from the DC tour. 'Jo the Waiter' goes over very well and the crowd do fine with the "I cried" line that is fast replacing the "But are 'friends' electric?" in AFE as the most enjoyable performer/crowd interaction at Gary's concerts. The combination of the new "Sacrifice" material, the inclusion of many rarely or never previously performed songs, the new energy injected into some of those songs, Gary's voice being in good form, and the generally very good sound quality make this album one that is more worthy than DC to have in one's collection. And although the "Sacrifice" material could use a little more work and Kipper could do a little less, it's definitely Gary's best live album since "White Noise" and perhaps even "Living Ornaments" though it is very hard to compare the two completely different approaches that Gary took in those two concerts. I can only recommend it. (It's a $2.00 toll you know - you'll make a FORTUNE!) SERIOUSLY - I've had a few direct emails, plus a couple of mentions in the digest, and I'd like to make a few further points. - I think there'll be enough support to warrant writing the program. It's not like I WASN'T going to do the poll if there wasn't much support - rather, IF a only had a few responses, it would take LESS time to do the damn thing by hand, than to write a program to do it (i.e. it'll take me an hour or two to get the programming done). - NILO asked about me "supplying" the results for people to do their own analysis. I don't know what OTHER analysis you can do apart from what I've outlined ("I'm in outlined..." NO? O.K. continue..) but it leads me to make these remarks..... - not only can I produce ratings for "the big picture", but if people want, I can return to them the results of THEIR vote. i.e. once you've ranked the SONGS, I can tell you what album/period ratings YOUR VOTE produces. You can then compare it with the final results (when they come out). - the final results will NOT just be 1.... 2.... 3.... I will include the RATINGS that the songs achieved, so that you can get a sense of "closeness". Songs which finish less than one point apart might as well be considered as a tie. - ANDY commented on the state of flux of rating songs. Unfortunately that comes with the territory of doing polls. (I'm NOT criticizing you ANDY, just addressing the POINT you have raised). Opinions change. (Wouldn't need to have ELECTIONS every 3/4 years otherwise!). This is neccessarily a poll about NOW. If you can just try to be as objective as possible(well, as objective as you can be when dealing with something which is, by definition, subjective), that's all I ask. Sure a week later you might have one song ahead of another, but in the big picture those 2 songs are CLOSE to each other, and in a poll of 200 odd songs - a couple of places won't make THAT MUCH difference.(Especially not if I get a lot of respondants). The problem is how to be objective when you have the "current fave" syndrome. Naturally I've listened to SACRIFICE quite a bit recently. One of my fave tracks is "Bleed". I HAVEN'T listened to TPP for "a while". My fave from that is (probably) "Films". so the recent SCORE is; BLEED - quite a lot. FILMS - 0. However I DON'T see myself putting "Bleed" above "Films" when I come to do my vote. You just have to try and take a step back and say "What do I REALLY like?", as opposed to "what am I listening to the most?". In fact what you can do is PLAY that stuff again - and see what you enjoyed the most. (Gives a good excuse to listen to NUMAN, doesn't it?!). - I haven't had any FEEDBACK yet on what to include/exclude. The reason I mentioned THE PLAN specifically is that it wasn't an INTENDED release. If it had been, then it may have been quite different. i.e. sounded more like TUBEWAY ARMY. I AM intending to include AUTOMATIC,"Refugee", etc. though. This is about NUMAN (100% pure or not). Although I expect these to poll fairly poorly generally, I think a couple of songs could be "up there".specifically "Voices", and MAYBE "I'm on Automatic" (it's one of those things where the SONG itself isn't "great", but people RELATE heavily to the LYRICS. "been there, done that"). - I called this "the definitive poll" because it is ALL-ENCOMPASSING. I thought afterwards than some may see this as arrogance (i.e. a "snub" of other polls). this is NOT the case. I didn't respond to the 2 recent polls ("live" set/fave artists - whatever happened to the results of the latter?). SORRY GUYS! I wasn't "snubbing" - just didn't have time to do it before the deadline, which brings me to my next point....... - There is no SET deadline for this. I say again that I want to hear from intending respondants. the REASON is that I then know when to "close off" voting. if 20 people say they intend to vote, and quite quickly I get 20 responses, then I know there's no need to keep the poll "open",and I can tally the results. However if in a few months we're still going, and I've had say 16 voting forms come in I can say to the other 4 "are you still IN?", and keep the deadline open for a while if so. The point is that I don't want to RUSH people, but I don't want to keep the poll open uneccessarily long either. Telling me you intend to vote is just that - an intention. I'm not going to hold you to it if you change you're mind. I just would like to know HOW MANY are voting - not URGENTLY, but sometime soon. - AN ALTERNATIVE METHOD OF RANKING THE SONGS. This occurred to me this week. Don't know why I didn't think to suggest it before. Instead of ranking an album at a time (as I have suggested), you could go through the songs and give them an initial RATING out of 10. THEN you could go through and RANK all your 10's, then your (9.5's?) 9's, etc. IF you did this though, you would have to keep in mind that ALL the songs are NUMAN, and rate accordingly. i.e. if you finish up with 60 10's, then you haven't done much towards breaking up the task! If you use this method you want to end up with ABOUT 20 10's, 20 9's, 20 8's, etc. If you can do this, you will probably find this is the BEST way to go about it. - Finally, to those who at this stage aren't intending to go "all the way" I'd just like to say that I WILL accept "top 20's" as stated, but I'd just like to say that I ANTICIPATE letting this go for 3-4 months min., and to have "the whole thing" done in that time you only need to do an album a week. It's not THAT much of a time investment. (and those of you at going to University in the Northern Hemisphere - you may not have much time NOW, but before polling closes you guys will be on summer holiday! much more free time). Those of you who think it's "a bit much", just HAVE A GO. If you DO find that it's too much (e.g. it takes you 3 hours just to decide on No. 1),then don't worry. you were right! BUT, you MAY find that once you start it's actually quite easy/fun (e.g. you have "knocked out" 30-40 songs in an hour, and maybe have enjoyed having an "excuse" to listen to GN). The MORE people who do "the lot", then the MORE representative the poll becomes. - will have "voting forms" ready in a month (mid-year exams to worry about before then). DONALD PEDDER.
