To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Last week Joey Lindstrom had a few things to say 'bout Sacrifice. Well........maybe you should get rid of that old plastic kmart stereo and get a good hi-fi system! :-) I'm a musician with an ear for production and would have to say 'Outland' had the noisiest distorted production I've ever heard from him. 'Sacrifice' pounds the hell out of my system and really shakes the walls as well as being very clean. I kinda think Gary intended the LP to be dark and 'heavy' to get his new attitude across. Harsh, pissed and back in control! Also, Ashley Pomeroy asks: >Just out of curiousity, is 'The Pleasure Principle' the only >Gary LP >that doesn't have a title track? Let's see......Tubeway Army, Dance, The Fury, Sacrifice. And not to mention The Plan, but that one doesn't count! Scorbie@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jul 1995 11:28:32 -0400 From: DavidLeck@aol.com Subject: Bits and pieces To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In reference to Sir Mix-A-Lot's obvious appreciation of Gary, the song "Rippin'" on his first album (Swass) includes samples of "Cars". Mix-A-Lot also sites Gary in the "Thanks" section of the liner notes. Since people are voicing their preferences, I thought I'd follow suit: I am partial to all Gary's early recordings, up through The Fury. I consider Warriors to be weak point in that series, but still very good. I think Berserker and The Fury are both outstanding albums. After the release of these two, something happened and Gary's music has never been the same. I still collect everything that comes out, but almost never listen to it. I did, however, find Dark Light to be very enjoyable (probably due to the inclusion of older tracks). I am very fond of Dance and I, Assassin. Most fans I encounter don't like those two albums. I am still looking for a VHS copy of "The Touring Principle". I would also like to get my hands on a compilation (homemade or otherwise) of Gary's early videos. I seem to remember: Cars (of course), I Die; You Die, Down in the park, She's got claws, We Take Mystery, etc. Does anybody have these floating around? As for Gary's US availability. It's nonexistant. I happen to have a friend that owns a record store, and who is also a big Gary Numan fan. He orders two copies of everything (1 for him, 1 for me). If it were not for this arrangement, I would be out of luck. I live in Atlanta, and in spite of it's size, the stores here do very little ordering. I have tried Tower/Blockbuster/etc, and they are very reluctant to scour the earth for titles you want. They get in the occasional import release, but they only get one copy. It is very frustrating. Some thoughts about 'Dark Light': This album is *really great* IMHO. I was able to purchase it some days ago and was really impressed especially how Gary presented the older stuff. Listening to the 'Dark Light'-Versions of 'I Dream of Wires' (although Gary's voice is a little bit weak here), 'Friends' (great 70's mood, perfectly performed) and 'Replicas' (fantastic how he powered up this song, like 'We Are Glass' on the 'White Noise' album :-9 ) was a really spine-chilling experience (in the positive meaning >;-). The only thing which was definitely disappointing about 'Dark Light' is the fact that no song of the IMHO ingenious 'Pleasure Principle' can be found on it :((( Has this something to do with Gary's new equipment? It's a pity he uses no more analogue synths at all. I think he should at least should combine them with his new ones in order to be able to maintain the old mood if needed. Just a thought... And about the overdub and sample discussions: people being 'disappointed' about Gary's 'dishonest' (or whatever it was called) live-performance really piss me off. Gary's live recordings are, as already has been mentioned here, much more 'real' than most other live stuff we know. And it is absolutely the right way to overdub if e.g. there is a microphone failure for a longer time during a song and things like this. And NOTE one thing: electronic music ALWAYS includes lots of different kinds of samples, special effects or sound patterns virtually impossible to reproduce live in a satisfying way so it's clear that some things which are obviously special effects or similar to this category are played as samples from tapes. There's no reason for considering this bad quality of an artist. Or do you want a 'Gary Numan unplugged'??? *YUCK* Just imagine e.g the sound effect during the very first seconds of 'I Dream of Wires' being played live 14 years after being recorded *BWAHAHAHAHA*.... OK, another thing: does anyone of you by chance know if there will be *ANY* GN concerts in Middle Europe in the future? I always just hear about dates in UK and the States. This is really sad. Are there no more Numan fans in Europe who don't live in the UK? Anyway I know some among my friends so there are probably more... Derek more or less ended the discussion by saing we shouldn't do it because it is illegal (in the US). I live in The Netherlands and last Saturday I found out that it is legal in my country to make copies from any format to another as long as it is for your private use. I found out about these facts through an advertisement from a company overhere in Rotterdam regarding services for copying LP's, cassettes, etc. to CD. They copy one(!) cassette or vinyl album to CD, including inlay and so on, for approx. $30, they can even print text for you on the CD itself. I am not sure but I think offering this service is legal in most European countries. How long will it take before copies of Berserker will appear on the market? I really think NUMA should act and release Berserker on CD. Maybe Derek could bring this up *again* in his next telephone conversation with Gary's mother? The main reason they are not releasing Berserker was, if I understood well, a minimum order of 500 copies. It is now possible to produce *one* CD for $30! I would like to pay more for an official version of Berserker. I am sure you all would... Any reactions? There'll probably be a flood of answers, so here's my 2 bits worth (plus 7/4-cent GST): The Plan, Tubeway Army, Dance, Warriors, The Fury, Metal Rhythm (although "Cold Metal Rhythm" is on that album), and his latest, Sacrifice. You could argue that technically Machine + Soul doesn't have a title track, because "Machine And Soul" differs by a plus-sign. :-) Oddly enough, his title tracks are often, with one exception, among his best songs. "Replicas" is pretty good. "Telekon" is brilliant. "I, Assassin" is... well, I'd rather not say lest the hate-mail stack up too high. "Berserker" is outstanding (although I think his "White Noise" version outclasses the studio version... the bassline is MUCH better). "Strange Charm" is great. "Outland" is better than anyone here will admit (grin!). And, "Machine And Soul" (ok ok, I'll count it!) is pretty darned good (coulda been better, this one held more promise than was delivered, like most of Sacrifice). //---------------------------------------------------------------------------- // lindstrj@cadvision.com aka Joey Lindstrom // If you're mindless, please take mine ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 12 Jul 1995 10:58:52 -0400 (EDT) From: "Edward Carmack (AEN)" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #139 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hey all.... I was delighted to find myself seated next to him in the screening room, and of course started talking to him. He said he'd seen the film previously and had actually liked it, and thought it far superior to the short story it was based on. I urged him to be honest about that, since I thought the panel idea was absurd anyway. After the film (which was sort of similar to Johnny Mnemonic) he went to play a game of golf, while I went ahead to a high school auditorium where he would later be giving a gratis performance for several thousand grade- and middle-school students. I watched the kids file in, most in Pleasure Principle-type suits or Berserker makeup, while a teacher played "The Skin Game" on a loudspeaker. I found it to be a pretty puzzling dream. The only parts that made sense are some that I, uh, didn't feel like discussing in public. (Pacifica Mix)...........5.49 4....."You Looking At My Pint?".........................1.15 Total Playing Time.....................................17.39 Review: For the second time in three years, Gary Numan's number 1 hit of 1978-79, "Are 'Friends' Electric?" has been covered. Unlike the covers done by the group Generator, these mixes not only work better, but display a greater degree of originality on the part of the group Nancy Boy. For Numan enthusiasts, both CD singles contain mixes done by Gary Numan himself. Unlike the Generator versions, Numan does not appear on these singles in any other form. Without a doubt, the best mix on the CD has got to be the 7" edit. It pretty much does everything a good single does. It hits the listener hard with a nice distorted guitar beginning, moves into a clever rendition of the the song, and seems to have fun with the song at the same time. The first spoken interval is done with the vocals being distorted as if spoken through a radio speaker. The "oh-oh" employed with great success by Numan in live renditions of this song is replicated here but at a much faster pace. The lead vocalist also took a fair amount of leeway in singing the lyrics, adding a few words here and there. All in all, this is a fun interpretation, with good distorted quitars, synth flourishes, and a vocalist not trying to upstage the music. The "Atlantis Mix" is pretty much a throw away. It starts with one of the more frequent lyrical changes on these CDs being spoken by the lead singer, "I don't think I'm an alien to you." and is followed by a long synth intro. I think the intent was to create an atmospheric feel, but it doesn't quite work. After about a minute of this low-key intro, percussion kicks in along with a low speed bass synth. On top of this whole build-up the lead singer adds repeating lines from the song along with the alien one above. The problem here is that the mix just doesn't go anywhere or become overly interesting. It struck me as being included merely to flesh out the CD single. Anyone familiar with Gary Numan would immediatly recognize the "desert mix" as being one of the two done by him even if it didn't say so on the CD jacket. The _Sacrifice_ style percussion starts this one off and gives it away. Once the vocals begin, a second level of complementary beats are added along with the synths and bass synth. The overall effect is an interesting cadence that changes the feel of the song by giving it almost a swinging beat effect. In the interludes, the bass synth stops and a nice high keyboard plays while the vocalist speaks the spoken parts. In another lyrical twist, to the line, "I can learn about little girls" is added "I like little girls, don't you?" to which another band member replies "Yes." I found the liberal take on the lyircs on both CDs to be somewhat refreshing. Not a bad mix, but the "Pacifica Mix" was better. The last mix on volume 1 is the "Crash Mix" which struck me as being very similar to the 7" Edit. Perhaps I need to hear the CDs more, but as of now this one wasn't that different. It seems to have a slightly stronger percussive beat with the drums, but other than that the bass synth and guitar didn't strike me as that distinct. Still, not a bad mix. Unlike the "Atlantis Mix," the "Three A.M. Mix" on volume 2 actually works for me. It too starts out slow but this time the attempt at an atmospheric feel is successful. Again, one hears that slow dance beat (almost like a house beat played in slow motion). Again, the lead singer throws in spoken lines and lyrical additions along with snippets of "oh-oh" from the edit version. Where this version really distinguishes itself from the "Atlantis Mix" is when the keybaords start playing in the background and that heavily distorted guitar kicks in. When everything starts going at once, it creates an interesting sound. This isn't something one would play all the time, but on occasion, it isn't that bad. Once again, the "Pacifica Mix" stands out as Numan's mix by the obvious _Sacrifice_ style percussive beats. In addition, however, one is also treated to a wall of flowing synth sounds that vaguely reminded me of his use of them on the song "Absolution." The combined effect of the beats and flowing synths make this perhaps the most daring version on both CDs. The combination works to create an entirely different cadence and feel for this song. Only the "oh-oh" parts and the interlude spoken sections bring the listener back to the original that this is a cover of. Really quite interesting, and while not as up-beat and "fun" as the 7" Eit, still a strong departure from convention for Mr. Numan, and a good addition to the CD. "You Looking At My Pint?" is a very short piece that guarantees that all the songs on these 2 CD singles will end with a question mark. It is a fairly silly, typical b-side song. It has the sound of early Wire at a pub during a fight. Fast paced, with lots of drums, drunken sounding "ay-ay-ay-ay" singing. Nothing great but that's okay. Packaging was simple, with pictures of the band on both sleeves. The inside of the sleeve contained the bare minimum of information (no mention of the band members names anywhere) and little else. I suppose the packaging is up to industry standards, but don't expect anything fancy beyond that. In summation, these are pretty good mixes. Especially the 7" Edit and the "Pacifica Mix." There is a spirit of lightheartedness and fun on these CDs. The 7" Edit in particular has a lot of little things going on that will make repeated listenings both necessary and enjoyable. For purists, the liberal use of lyrics might be a problem, to me it was perfectly acceptable and helped create the impression of youthful energy that I got from both singles. If nothing else, these guys strike me as pretty easy going and probably a riot to hang with over a pint or two or three or..... Erland Rating: 1.5 Me! I accept your rebuttle and find validity in your points, however, I have found times when (and perhaps this was a knee jerk reaction to one posting) the questioning of his sexuality was for the sake of simply knowing and _this_ is what I find to be an invasion of privacy. I don't wish this to turn into a tedious and repetitve debate amongst us, but I do believe that a person's orientation and preferences are a private affair although when one becomes a "star" one literally opens one's (what's with this "one" business!) life to scrutiny and therefore, sexuality becomes to a certain extent public domain. Perhaps being from Wisconsin and having to deal with many homophobics, I've become too sensitive on this issue. I bow to your and every other member's right to discuss Gary's sex life as it relate directly to his music and creativity, but find any purile discussion of his sex life revolting as many people would, to have anyone's private affairs put underneath a microscope and dissected.
