It seems to me that his biggest problem with IRS was others MEDDLING with his style. Gary needs a producer who will CATER to the style of the artist. I picked Lanois because he's got an excellent reputation for doing exactly that. He'll suggest, he'll occasionally push, but the artist has the final say. I'm not saying Lanois is the only one who can do that - that was just a name I tossed in off the top of my head. But if you think Lanois can only handle Peter Gabriel stuff, I invite you to check out Lanois' own albums, especially "Acadie" (which features a few Neville brothers and even a couple of Enos). ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 14 Jul 1995 08:28:57 -0700 From: dr13@ix.netcom.com (Terry Burke) Subject: Numan cover songs? I have the DiY home-taper PLATZANGST's version of "I Dream of Wires". (contact: interfear recordings PO Box 1324 Muscatine, IA 52761-1324) Anyone else record their own versions of Gary Numan songs? Send me your want lists. Also, let me add my name to the list of people who are interested in hearing the unplugged live album once it is recorded! I think it would be very interesting to hear an artist predominantly associated with electronic instruments do something acousticly. Some of the songs that might work well are: Complex Down in the Park (instrumental) Jo the Waiter A Child With The Ghost Stories I think it will limit Gary to some of the slower songs, due to the fact that a lot of his compositions are based on the rhythm tracks he lays down initially, which would be difficult to reproduce with acoustic drums. Witness some of the problems the Cure had during their Unplugged concert. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Why do people dislike 'Dance' and 'I, Assassin' so? I really like them. In fact, there's very little of Gary's work that I don't like...excepting M&S, which I've only listened to once since I bought it four months ago. As for Dark Light, I don't care if he uses DAT or not, as long as he sounds good. I'm not advocating a Milli Vanilli type thing here, but I see no reason not to use technology that's available to make something sound good. I think we've all been to concerts where the one is disappointed by the quality (or lack thereof) of the sound, and I appreciate the effort taken by Gary.
