They are: 'Warriors Tour 93' by Fin Costello - which is a photobook of the Warriors tour, mostly in black and white 'Gary Numan: the Songbook Volume 1' which contains 'Tubeway Army' and 'Replicas' material plus one or two things off 'The Plan'. Does anyone know if there were any more songbooks? On the subject of 'Dance' and 'I Assassin', I feel that the former was, in some ways, a bit of an experiment that nearly came off whilst the latter is a truly dreadful album, probably Gary's worst. Personaly, I think that 'Sacrifice' was Gary's best album since 'Warriors' and perhaps even since 'Telekon'! Apparantly, his collection has gotten so large that he's resorted to looking for games in rather low-success-rate places. We spent all of saturday hunting down cartridges in thrift shops like Salvation Army stores. While we did find many common games (and used up lots of time and gas in the process) nothing rare or even potential trade bait cartridges were found. The highlight had to be lunch considering how disappointing the actual hunt went. Still, I think the day did John some good. He also mentioned that you tried calling him last week when he was on the computer. He seemed very excited by your call and I hope you try again soon. He's dying to talk to you. Not much else is new. Going to my first Rockies game on sunday with Laura. Mary Mowrer arrives on wednesday (26 July) and I'll be showing her around Denver for a day before she heads off to Boulder. Then on the 27th of July, I'm stuck playing operations manager for the next 10 days. That's something I'm not looking forward to at all. That's the news here. Gibson" Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #140 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings! I had entered my introduction to this Gary Numan digest last week and have just received the printout of the digest. First, I would like to say that it is very comforting for me to see how man fans Gary Numan has and to know that there are a lot more. I don't know anyone personally who listens to Gary Numan's music, except a guyfriend of mine, whom I turned onto Gary Numan's music, which now he loves. I enjoyed reading all of the messages in the digest, analyzing each in hopes of learning more about Gary Numan through info and leads. I have a comment/correction to make about my intro last week. I couldn't make it to the compulab last week, so I wrote up my intro and had a friend enter it in for me. Well, he added something that I would have never intended to put in my intro. Ok.I do like the song "Praying To the Aliens," but I don't believe that the contents of the song are in any relationship with my views in regards to religion and the biogenetic manipulation of homo sapien genes. I like the title of the song and it is a cute, quirky little song. I will admitt; however, that my personal views have influenced my love for Gary Numan's work. To me, Gary Numan and his music seems "other worldly." So, while a lot of people may find his music strange, I can listen to it and feel right at home. You could say that some of his work serves as home-sick lullabies for me. I will not elaborate. Now, I have a question. I realize that this might seem like an awkward and personal question in regards to Gary Numan, and I am a bit embaressed in asking, but I wouldn't mind knowing since I like to know all I can know about Gary Numan. The friend I mentioned earlier that I had introduced Gary Numan's music to has a sexual preference in bondage and he likes Gary Numan's music in that some of the music (songs most notably from "Metal Rhthym," "Isolate," and "The Other Side of Gary Numan") give him the impression that Gary Numan may have a kinky preference in sexual orientation. To ease his mind and enlighten me, can anyone tell me if any of Gary Numan's music or songs give you that impression too? Thanks bunches!--- K.A.M. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 1995 02:59:48 -0400 From: PhilipJ414@aol.com Subject: Gary Numan Digest V1 #141 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Phil in Sioux Falls here. First of all, I'd like the person out there who used to live here that E mailed me to please do so again as I was a bonehead and somehow lost his mail. (I'm pretty new at this guys, thankyou for your patience. A word to Clea -- I feel as you about "Dance" and "I, Assassin". I remember when Gary stated he would be ending the Numan/Machine part of his career in the Living Ornaments material, and wondering what's next? When I heard "Slowcar to China" for the first time, I was in a mall buying a boombox with a cassette of "Dance" a friend had just bought me. I was much more interested in the music than the potential purchase. I loved the change and was impressed at how well he'd pulled it off, especially the vocals. "I, Assassin" is one of my favorites as well--I especially have always loved the delayed sax on "We Take Mystery (To Bed)" Early Version which was a B side to an EP of the album cut. Very romantic stuff in my opinion. I've never had any idea what the song is about, and if someone knows please share, but I have slowdanced to it, this much I can tell you. Phil's final thoughts are of Henry Rollins. I heard he was starting up a label and signing such 80's artists as Devo. I really know nothing more about this, but doggone it, I just think it would be cool if Gary could get signed to someone on this side of the ocean he'd be happy with and who would respect his music. I'm unsure if Gary would even be interested; it's just as an American fan I'd like him to have some solid representation over here. This is all I have to say. I've been a fan of Gary and his music since he first started. I used to live in Britain, and I was in the fan club. I like all Gary's stuff, but my favourites are "Complex", "Down in the Park" and "Jo the Waiter". Apart from Gary's music, I like all kinds of stuff, from Megadeth to the Rankin Family. I'm not easily categorised. I have a special soft spot for the early syntho-groups like Ultravox while John Foxx was with them, Orchestral Manoevres in the Dark, Human League and the like. There seems (at least in Canada) to be an upsurge of really good, catchy synthopop at present. It makes me feel hopeful. I believe the "pop song" is an art form that rarely is perfected. I play (badly) keyboards and saxophone. I also play the spoons! Midge Ure had just been invited to join Ultravox. I hope you find it interesting. Thanks John for allowing me to post this section here. Taken from In The City Ultravox: Past Present And Future by Francis Drake & Peter Gilbert "In The City" is an Ultravox fanzine. BILLY, WE HAD A LOT OF LETTERS AT ONE STAGE AS A RESULT OF YOU APPEARING WITH TUBEWAY ARMY ON THE OLD GREY WHISTLE TEST AND TOP OF THE POPS. PEOPLE WERE WRITING 'IT LOOKS AS IF ULTRAVOX ARE FINISHED AND BILLY'S GOING TO JOIN TUBEWAY ARMY'. HOW DO YOU STAND NOW WITH TUBEWAY ARMY, BILLY? Billy: "Well, it started off through you two putting me in touch with Gary Numan and him asking me to do the OGWT, so I did that and then it just so happened that we did a TOTP because it was up in the breakers the same week, which was amazing luck for Tubeway Army, to have the single played twice on television in the same week, and then it just escalated from there. So I just carried on doing TOTP." DID YOU EVER CONSIDER JOINING TUBEWAY ARMY PERMANENTLY, BILLY? Billy: "Yes I did. Obviously when something shoots straight up to No. 1, it's quite interesting and of course, to get the atmosphere around you when something like that happens. The feeling of the band before and after, I mean, 'cos one minute the band are carting the gear up two flights of stairs in South East London, a place where Beggars Banquet had stuck us and nobody gives a f*** about you, the next minute you're No. 1. Just seeing the effect that, that has on a band, I mean I'd never seen that before and it was interesting. You tend to get caught up in it a bit because they start talking about themselves as having power, - really, like they would go up to the keyboards player and say "Well, you should do this tour", it's really sort of interesting. IT MUST HAVE BEEN A VERY TEMPTING SITUATION FOR YOU THOUGH? Billy: "Oh, it was, but it wasn't what I wanted. Well, you can imagine what I mean, it was and is very much a Gary Numan thing. The band has only just been put together and they're great, really nice people." IS THERE ANY HOPE OF THE REST OF TUBEWAY ARMY PUTTING ANY OF THEIR IDEAS FORWARD? Billy: "Well, yeah but not as much as I would like. Y'see, I would prefer a band which is what we're getting together at the moment with Ultravox." DID IT EVER OCCUR TO YOU THAT WITH YOU APPEARING WITH TUBEWAY ARMY A LOT OF ULTRAVOX FANS WOULD BEGIN TO WONDER JUST WHAT WAS GOING ON? Billy: "Yes I did but in a way I didn't mind because I wanted to be noticed and I was pleased that I was doing it. It was good because Midge came and brought me these clothes, it sounds calculated but, like, I wanted to be noticed and Midge felt good that I was noticed. It got a lot of people thinking about us..." IT OBVIOUSLY KEPT PEOPLE REMINDED OF ULTRAVOX AS WELL? Billy: "Yes it did and it was good just to see the fact, that Ultravox were involved in what was happening to Tubeway Army." BILLY, WHY DO YOU THINK ULTRAVOX HAVE NOT BEEN AS SUCCESSFUL AS TUBEWAY ARMY? Billy: "Well, I know one of the reasons we weren't making it as far as appealing to a lot of people and that was because we were changing around to much, dilettantic in a way, the way the writing was done. I mean, I'm a bit to balme as well because I like things like that. It's been characterestic of our writing all the way up from Tiger-Lily. We'd say "Oh let's try a Beatles type thing" or "Let's try a Stravinsky thing now." DO YOU MEAN LIKE THE SONG CALLED QUIRKS? Billy: "Yeah Quirks, that explains it. It makes for interesting rehearsals but it's an excuse to get into something. What I mean is, it just changes people around too much while they're trying to listen to an album and they get confused. Whereas you can listen to a Tubeway Army album and it's consistent." Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Gary, of course, achieved worldwide star status in 1979 and 80 whereas Foxx only managed modest success with his solo work. The following is a snippet from an interview with John Foxx from a television show in France back in 1980(?) when he was touring for "Metamatic". The whole interview appeared in the FoxxVox mailing list courtesy of John Carramao. ----- After an unintelligible question: John Foxx: "I try to ignore things like rock music and certain ways of singing and behaving that I didn't want before that time and made a new stance out of it really. I mean the music is pathetic, as a response to whats happening now. All it did was it gave some initial clue to one or two possible ways of behaving in the face of a big change, the big change that's happening now. But reality outstripped it very quickly I think. A CARICATURE OF THAT WAS PROBABLY GARY NUMAN WHO AT THE SAME TIME STOLE ALL OF YOUR IDEAS FROM ULTRAVOX. John Foxx: "Well he didn't steal them, he was welcome to them as far as I was concerned." YEAH? John Foxx: "Oh yeah, I mean it's......I don't think anyone can steal ideas. I think as soon as you put them out they are everyone's property. I really believe that. It's as simple as that. At least he had the grace to admit where a lot of his ideas came from. He was very generous in that respect. ----- It'd be interesting to know if there were any other respects where John did not feel Gary was generous. I guess this does not get us much further wrt what John thought about Gary in the early 80s but he certainly did not begrudge him any ideas that Gary may have obtained from Ultravox. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I wouldn't mind hearing Gary produced by Steve Nye, who has worked with David Sylvian and other artists who are known for creating very personal music with a distinctive sound. David Lord also co-produced Peter Gabriel 4, aka "Security," and could also give Gary a cool sound. Gary, of course, produces himself just fine. But this whole thread of "who could produce Gary?" is, I suppose, a concession to the fact that if Gary wants to land a US label contract that will actually kick-start his career instead of bog it down, like the misbegotten IRS stint, he's going to need to get back in with some A-list people. Martin ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 17 Jul 1995 11:16:26 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Response to Nilo on "Berserker" To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #140 Roock.Nilo.de@uniface.nl states: In recent digests a thread was going on about making a CD from a DAT tape of Berserker. Derek more or less ended the discussion by saing we shouldn't do it because it is illegal (in the US). Laws in most countries regarding copyright are almost identical. Italy's bootleg industry has all but been shut down because the Italian Government tightened its laws after outcries from other countries. So, I believe that what was proposed before is not only illegal in the USA but also elswhere. I live in The Netherlands and last Saturday I found out that it is legal in my country to make copies from any format to another as long as it is for your private use. I found out about these facts through an advertisement from a company overhere in Rotterdam regarding services for copying LP's, cassettes, etc. to CD. They copy one(!) cassette or vinyl album to CD, including inlay and so on, for approx. $30, they can even print text for you on the CD itself. I am not sure but I think offering this service is legal in most European countries. They make *one* copy, not 60 or more. That is legal. 60 copies would not be for private use because they would be being "sold" to others. The exchange of money for a copy (even with no profits involved) constitutes a commercial transaction. I'm sure if you asked them to make 60 copies of anything they'd say "no". How long will it take before copies of Berserker will appear on the market? I really think NUMA should act and release Berserker on CD. Maybe Derek could bring this up *again* in his next telephone conversation with Gary's mother? The main reason they are not releasing Berserker was, if I understood well, a minimum order of 500 copies. It is now possible to produce *one* CD for $30! I would like to pay more for an official version of Berserker. I am sure you all would... It is impossible to tell. I spoke to Beryl about it last time I talked with her; I discussed it with Tony a few weeks ago. I will continue to mention it at every opportunity. I am reasonably sure it will happen. I just need to convince them to do it. They are very busy at the moment with other projects. Orders from this group alone at $25 each would likely cover most of the costs of making a batch of 500. I don't think it's a matter of finding a means to do it but Numa having the will to do it expediently. Any reactions? I cannot condone any form of copying the CD without Numa's permission. I will, however, continue my endeavours to persuade Numa to repress "Berserker" and to make it a general release so all who so desperately want it can get it. I may write a letter to Tony outlining the arguments and imploring them to do so in the near future. I am hoping that Gary completely reinterpets the songs he choses rather than trying to perform every aspect of the studio versions only with acoustic instruments. "Down In the Park" is simply beautiful in its piano version. One has to expect changes that radical in order to see that this may not be the bomb that many are anticipating. Without a contract with a larger US records company that is unlikely to happen. Likewise with continental Europe. Gary played a couple of nights in Belgium on the Emotion Tour in 1992. They were his first dates outside the UK in years and he has not played outside the UK since. Any dates outside the UK are dependant on him getting signed by a label and his albums being distributed in those countries. He also needs some publicity and financial suppport from that company to tour. Your best bet at the moment is catching him in London on his March/April 1996 tour.
