Mr Phil makes a big decision Unplugged ------------------------------------------------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 1995 14:44:15 -0400 From: jmg@interport.net (James M. Graham) Subject: To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Regarding several issues form the last newsletter (passed on to me by a friend)... A) For clues to a basic understanding of the writing on "Replicas," (should a clue be desired) read "Exterminator" by Willam Burroughs. After doing so, see if "Replicas" doesn't seem like a "Burroughs Rock Opera." There are also references to the works of author J.G. Ballard... B) Henry Rollins is not signing "bands like DEVO." He is re-releasing some of his favorite albums from the 70's / 80's that the huge parent conglomerates don't see fit to issue due to expected minimal sales (a la Gary Numan). He has released Devo, Tom Verlaine, Alan Vega and Gang of Four among others. This is a noble thing to do even though his neck is bigger than his head... C) Regarding the thread about someone making copies of the BERSERKER cd...It seemed to me that the source was just offering a few "devout" fans a chance to hear a great record (and it is awesome), not trying to get over on NUMA...I guess I just don't understand the whole holier-than-thou-I-am-the-police attitude when, seemingly all this person was doing was emmulating a typical deadhead transaction...Those cd blanks are not cheap, you know, and the machines cost 5K...Calm down...I think I just might get me one, cause you know...I could be dead by the time Gary gets off his ass. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 1995 15:14:23 -0600 (MDT) From: "BRIAN D. HAMMOND" Subject: Big Mistake To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello Fellow Numanoids! This is Brian Hammond, who with a very red-face from embarrassment would like to apologize for that bizarre message on sunday's digest. That was personal mail I *thought* I had sent to a friend. Instead, in a case of extreme dementia, I sent it to the digest instead. I had no idea I had done this until I read my digest on tuesday. Sorry for the confusion. I feel *very* stupid right now. So, in an effort to recover my dignity, I have a question to ask: It was mentioned in passing here a few weeks ago in an introductory message, something about Numan on 8-track. I was under the impression that Numan was never released on 8-Track although some people may have recorded LPs and cassettes of his onto blank 8-tracks. Is this correct or were there once Numan albums released on 8-Track? If there were, which ones exactly? Thanks! Me! This sexual preference thing about Gary Numan and some of his fans is getting way out of hand and is just so fucking sad. Will you all just piss off! Also to you seekers of the (so far) impossible CD ..... > I cannot condone any form of copying the CD without Numa's permission. As for the Berserker CD thing, give it a rest please, the same territory is being covered over and over and everyone knows the situation. Learn to enjoy your vinyl or cassette copy ... if you have one. Otherwise get one! Good day to you all, Paul. ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 25 Jul 1995 07:59:30 -0700 (PDT) From: "J. Will you all just > piss off! What is this? 1. Calm down. 2. If Gary writes a song, especially a provocative one, it will be interpreted. 3. What is "so fucking sad?" I grew up in the center of Nebraska. I know that songs like Jo the Waiter and Slow Car to China were, personally, rather important in being a constant and accessible reminder that there was life outside of there and that people weren't universally intolerant. 4. Bondage isn't a sexual preference, it is an activity. 5. If you don't think that sexual activities and orientations, gender confusion, and displacement are not theme's in Gary Numan's music, you must have a wildly different record collection from mine. 6. This is a discussion group, not a tirade group. If you wish to flame, do it on your own time. J LeRoy -- ---------- J. I hope that when I download the discograghy I don't get too many surprises! I mean I've got German versions, Japanese versions, picture discs, interview singles, the works! I'm very happy to have found an outlet where I can share my passion with others. I'm new at this so be patient! Right here in Sioux Falls, SD. I mean it's only fair -- I'm right in the middle of all of you, right?? (except for the Aussie, nothing personal) :) :) :) -- just kidding, let's just all hope he makes it back here someday soon. Jeez I'm enjoying this!!! ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 24 Jul 1995 14:10:18 +0200 From: e9225365@student.tuwien.ac.at (hr) Subject: Unplugged To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #142, Derek Langsford wrote: >I notice many are dreading the potential "unplugged' album that Gary has >plans to record. Of course there are some songs which would probably sound great in unplugged versions (especially piano only versions would be very interesting and suitable for some of Gary's songs). And yes, I agree, the 'Down in the Park' piano version which I know since I have the 'I Die:You Die' single (B-Side is 'Down in the Park' - piano) is absolutely great. I like it especially as I play the piano myself for 11 years. What I basically wanted to express is that it's part of Gary's music that some effects are created by his synths and that it's part of electronic music itself. And I guess I'll never want to hear songs like 'I Dream of Wires', 'Berserker' or 'Cars' in unplugged versions because the *are and will ever be* typical synth pieces and at least I think those songs can't be performed in any good way without synths. BTW, he really IS going to put out an unplugged album? P.S.
