On 'Images 7' Gary has this to say about fans 'bootleging' his material: Q: "What are your feelings about illegal LPs?, Or as they call it bootlegs?......" A: "Well.....(laugh) I don't like it.... I don't mind bootleg LPs of concerts at all, except for the fact that most of the people that make the money aren't fans, and I resent that. *I don't mind the fan making money at all*, but I resent somebody that don't even like you making money out of you and bad mouthing you at the same time probably, laughing all the way to the bank. I don't like *that*. But I don't mind bootleg LPs of concerts and *such* at all. People often give them to me to sign and I don't mind that because *only the hardcore are gonna buy those and they're gonna buy everything else anyway* and it doesn't do me any harm." (For Derek): It seems Gary's attitude towards this subject is pretty laid back. I would suggest you *clearly* mention in your next 'conversation' with Beryl that some select members of this group are about to go ahead with CD pressings of Berserker. The above comment _seems_ to suggest that Gary doesn't mind 'hardcore' fans doing 'what they will' seeing as they will buy everything, anyway (such as myself). It's going to happen behind the scenes anyway, but, Gary's personal approval would be nice so we could laugh in the faces of those who disapproved! You see, my point is this: If you're a major star who's used to selling 100's of thousands of LPs......30 bootlegs don't add up to a hill o' beans. I don't see how this could possibly offend or insult NUMA at all. But of course this is my own self serving interpretation but the above comment by Gary seems to apply to our quest. **So Derek...please make it *clear* what is going to happen*** For those of you who are ready to draw their semi-automatic typing guns, stick it up yur arse's. ;-) We are not trying to rip Gary off. *We love him*. The problem is NUMA can't live up to our needs as fans, so now we're taking it into our own hands............................. Plus...I would like to take this opportunity to thank my new Numanoid bud Mr. Tolva and my dear 'friend' Mr. Carlson (both of Chicago). You both have filled in the gaps of my collection (as I have yours) to a point I thought it would never reach. I thank you dearly for the efforts you have made. My life is complete (for the time being) and I owe it to you both. Thank You. :-) Scorbie@aol.com (Aaron Hannum) Oh yeah!....P.S. Gary isn't gay and he isn't into bondage. It was all part of the 'image' for Replicas. The ideas came from W. Burroughs (read Naked Lunch and Cities of the Red Night) as well as Phillip K. Dick's 'Flow my Tears, the Policeman said'. It was fashionable at the time to be gay or androdgynous and Gary played it very well, it seems. I do the same in my music. It's a good subject. It's obvious that it was part of the 'Image'. He *has* been accused of having 'wild sex romps' with fans after shows and he's replied 'Well...you get sucked into the rock&roll thing from time to time'! 'All I can do now is wait for the noise!' Gibson" Subject: Gary Numan lyrics/PKD references (fwd) To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I thought this might be interesting for anyone interested. I learned a few years ago that Gary Numan is a fan of Phillip Dick's work and since then, it has inspired me to read some Phillip Dick work. I'm not saying I try to or that I do understand Gary Numan's lyrics completely. I read them and they're interesting, because they're a part of him and if I did understand them completely, it would dissolve the mystery that Gary Numan represents to me. I am falmiliar with a lot of the style and since I read about his Phillip Dick inspirations, I read through some of his lyrics more carefully, noting the references and inpirations. I'd happened to check through the Phillip Dick infonet, since I've become a fan of his work now and took a look through the section of lyrical references. I didn't see any kind of Gary Numan listed and it bothered me, because the way I understand it, Gary is fairly notorious for being a fan of his work and of being inspired by his work. So, I figured I'd pop this letter to them and let them know how I felt. -------Kelly ---------- Forwarded message ---------- Date: Fri, 28 Jul 1995 12:22:29 -0400 (EDT) From: Douglas T. Gibson To: regulus@interport.net Subject: Gary Numan lyrics/PDK references Hello! I would like to add something to your lyrical references to Phillip Dick's work. I'm a pretty big fan of Gary Numan and I'm pretty falmiliar with his lyrics. I would like to point out to you that Gary Numan is a big fan of Phillip Dick's work and has made several Phillip Dick references in many of his songs. For starters, when Gary Numan was in his band "Tubeway Army" back in the late 70's, the put out three albums from 1978 to 1979. On Tubeway Army's first album, the very first song "Listen To the Sirens" starts off in the very first verse: " 'Flow my tears,' the new police song." This is an obvious reference to Phillip Dick's "Flow My Tears, the Police Man Said." On the same album, another Phillip Dick-styled reference by the title of the song, "The Dream Police." On Tubeway Army's third album "Replicas," two obvious references are made. The first one is the title of the second song on the album. "Are 'Friends' Electric?" is a direct inspiration from Phillip Dick's "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" Also, in the next song after that, "The Machman," a Phillip Dick-styled reference is made in the second verse: "I saw him whirr away." Gary Numan's references to Phillip Dicks work do not end there. Throughout Gary Numan's Numa label albums ranging from 1984 to 1986, he's made a considerable amount of dedication to the movie "Bladerunner," which of course was based on(though not entirely like)the Phillip Dick book, "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" Several sound samples from the movie were used in songs like "Call Out the Dogs," from his 1985 album "The Fury." In Gary Numan's song released in 1986, "Time To Die," no samples are used, but the lyrics are sung from the perspective of the android "Roy Baty," from the scene when Baty and Deckerd are sitting in the rain. I realize that some of these references aren't direct, but are inspirations, though some are direct references. Gary Numan no doubt grew up as a kid reading Phillip Dick books and has obviously been inspired by his work as a musician. I truely think he should be given credit for it in spite of his unavailablitiy in the U.S. Atleast most people know he did "Cars" in 1979/80. Thank-You! Stumbled across a nice little double album import from England, "Dark Light", recorded live at the Labbatts Hammersmith Apollo. I love it, well recorded and all the Numan songs i've loved over the years, cept 'My Love is a Liquid...", but you can't have everything, can you. But I have a request, does anyone have the lyrics to 'Bleed', this is the first time I've heard it and, well, it's sound strikes a special nerve in my brain. But Gary's accent makes it a bit hard to hear the lyrics clearly, or perhaps I've been listening to 'Bombers' and 'a Question Of Faith' far too loud and have gone a bit on the deaf side... Possible... ;)= Thanks ahead of time, with luck I'll be able to see Gary in concert with-in my lifetime! To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Receipt Notification Requested) (Non Receipt Notification Hello numanoids! So, I have to introduce myself, as newcomer in the mailing list about Gary Numan. First of all, please, don't take care about my english as I am french. My name is Jean-Francois, I'm 35, I live in Grenoble, which was olympic town in 1968, winter games. So I live between mountains, in the Alps. I work as engineer in microelectronics (integrated circuit, if you prefer). I remember to have seen Gary at the french TV when he sang at the Palace in 1980. It was the first and last time I saw him moving, because I am not so lucky to see him during one of his tour. But I am fond of his music, I have bought all his available albums in France -I saw in his discography that I miss some of the latests, as I think I am probably alone in Grenoble to know him, and retailers don't propose any of his production... Other artists I like are Kas Product (a unknown french group that does not exist anymore now), the old albums of Simple Minds, Indochine, Rita Mitsouko, Depeche Mode, the Cure, Kid Creole (and the Coconuts, sure), the B52's, Nina Hagen... I play (very bad) on my (old) Korg M1, and I have sequenced Airlane on it, with help of my PC and ears... I have vinyl albums of Gary since 1981, and it was a good opportunity for my to buy the complete collection of CD Asylum (1,2,3), so I can listen to the sirens as much as I want, without destroying my vinyls. I enjoy snow skiing, Formula 1 grand prix, electronic games, science-fiction, Garfield (the cat)... I am very happy to discover that such a newsgroup exists. I am not alone! Great! Jean-Francois. ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 28 Jul 1995 00:16:35 -0700 (PDT) From: William Norris Subject: new to the list To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings eveyone, I just read my first set of posts and I figured I should introduce myself. My name is Bill and I'm typing form lovely San Francisco. I've been a Numan fan (an isolated numan fan) for quite a while. I have to admit that his music after the metal rhythm album seemed a little empty, but I recently picked up a copy of sacrifice and I have to say it is one of my favorite cds. I'm really glad to be on this list because it is nearly impossible for me to follow numan's work. I'm not sure how much I'll be able to contribute, but rest assured I appreciate any and all numa-related info. ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 27 Jul 1995 09:58:29 -0400 From: Ahankara@aol.com Subject: replicas and replicants To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I think that it is only fair to bring up Philip K. Dick. Numan mentioned Dick as his major literary influence in the interviews that I have heard and read. The first book of his I read was called 'The Simulacra' and that is a lot like lyrics and the overall FEELING of the 'Replicas' album. Also worth reading is 'Flow My Tears The Policeman Said' by the same author. I got the recent 'Replicas' cd, complete with nice cover and great pics. Will there be more released by this label? Cheers. -Alek ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
