I've been listening to Gary for quite some time. I have several of his tapes which I've now acquired on CD. I have a couple of his albums and have become frustrated. On the double CD set of Dance and Tubeway Army, my favorite song, "Cry, The Clock Said" is not on the CD. I nearly cried when I realized years ago, that the song was not on it. I have since been searching desperately to find it. Can anyone help me? I have: Here I Am, Replicas/The Plan, Dance/Tubeway Army, The Pleasure Principle/Warriors, Exhibition I & II, The Fury, and Telekon/I, Assassin. I have almost all of those on tape, including White Noise. On that (tape) my favorite version of "Are Friends Electric?" exists. Has anyone ever seen or heard of it on CD? I have Radio Heart on vinyl single--but it's warped... Need another copy of that, oh.. I also have Strange Charm on CD. Been a big fan of Gary's since 1984... Right around there. I have the Berserker album (vinyl) and need need need it on CD. Even though some of the songs are from Berserker, I'd really like to see it in it's entirety on CD. The White Noise tape is perhaps a bootleg. It's from the Berserker tour. I had heard years ago that it's a double album set--White Noise and Berserker. Is that true? And if so, where can I acquire another copy of White Noise? I even had a video of the Berserker tour, but it only worked in Brittish VCRs. I Couldn't use it in the states. So I gave it to one of my friends. I am just yearning to get every song from Gary on CD... Primarily "Cry, the Clock Said." I love love love that song. I've always loved Gary's lyrics, very eerie... Telekon is my fav. too... Too many good songs from him to choose a fav tho. I need more help to find the rest on CD. Can anyone help me? Please catch me on America Online. I'm BDahlvang@aol.com. This being not a part of the 2 fer offers from Bega and/or Japan. Derek, the answer is yes!!! I have a copy. It is fantastic. "Replica's" In it's own package. It was offered by Music International LTD., 36-38 Caxton Way, Watford, Herts WD1 8uF. It has great pictures, liner notes and the words to all the songs. Great new package. Release date is 1995. I think this is a division of beggars as they have a small logo stuck on the back corner of the rear panel. Now on to the thank you's. Thanks to all the fans out there. I thought I was alone for the last 14 years. I am so grateful to Derek and crew for putting this whole thing together. I found Gary's music in late 1980, to late to ever catch him live. I had a chance once here in Detroit, but I had a college final on the same night as the show (the I, Assassin Tour). If I knew he would never have been back, I would have gone. Back to Derek, should you ever tire of assembling this digest, you just let us know. I have only been on-line for 3-4 months now. This digest has been the best way, actually, the only way to kep up on Gary. Before this digest, my only hope was aimlessly wandering the strret of the country looking for Numan imports and the like. Thanks ever so much Derek!!!!! One last bit, I am toying with the idea of going to England for one of Gary's shows. I have spent a small fortune on his lp's cd's and the like (close to $5,000). My only concern is getting a bum seat. I mean, if I travel half way around the world to Gary, I mean, I want to see him. Perhaps even have a few words. It's not like he's coming half-way round the world to see us here in the states. My question is: If I go,,,, does anyone know how I can get a great seat (first three rows?) In addition, where to stay? And finally, a telephone number to order tickets through? Any help would be appreciated. Guess while I am writing, I want to get my hands on all the Babylon series and Images releases I have been reading about. I will pay exceptional money for both. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu A rather presumptious subject line, but it got your attention. One of my fondest memories is seeing Gary Numan perform live, at the Max Bell Arena here in Calgary (Canada), way back in 1980. I decided about a month ago that I *MUST* see Gary Numan perform live again. Since he's not going to be coming HERE again for a very, very long time, it looks like Mohammed must go to the mountain. I have therefore decided to start saving NOW for my trip to England, in time for next year's tour. Optimally, I'd like to catch multiple shows, even all of them if it's possible (are there organized NumaTours?). I'll be able to stay with some relatives and may even bring a fellow fan along with me to keep me company. I'm expecting to blow anywhere from $2000-$3500 on this little trip. Cheap, at triple the price. Do YOU want to make this trip, too? That's a lot of money, but let's face it folks - unless there's some sort of miracle, he simply isn't coming back to tour North America. The ONLY way we'll ever see him live is go to England. So consider making this trip yourself. If there are others interested in going (you'll have to make your own arrangements to get there, lodgings, etc.), I'd be quite interested in arranging a small meeting between us, to allow us to put some faces to the names we see regularly in the Digest. Something casual, like a small pub somewhere where we can convince the owners to play some Numan music while we sit and drink Guinness. :-) I'd like to ask anyone who's got information on next year's tour to email me with it (Derek Langsford is tracking down dates and venues for me). Are there any fan promotions associated with the tour that you know of? Let me know. Anything that you can think of that would add to the experience of a Numanoid in Britain, send it along. I will, in turn, maintain a small database with this information and pass it along to all interested parties (ie: those interested in making the trip), including starting up a small private "mailing list" which I'll use to disseminate new information as it comes in. Life is short. I told them about the impatience and anxiety the unavailability of this album on CD was causing; the debate about pressing CD copies if Numa do not release the disc soon, and the harm that keeping fans waiting is doing. I outlined numerous reasons why it should be reissued as a general release and rebutted comments I have heard from Beryl and Tony that were potentially holding the reissue back. I even addressed ways they could release it to maximize sales. In effect I gave every reason I could think of for releasing it to the general public. I also implored them to reissue the CD before any other albums are reissued (they have been wanting to do STRANGE CHARM and THE FURY before any others). I hope it will push them to making the decision to forge ahead with the reissue. I have done this unilaterally rather than go via the Digest for comments because of my desire to do this in a timely manner and to argument over wording, content etc. My only criticism was that they have been going back and forth on repressing the disc ever since the original run ran out, and that by not being a general release it denied thousands the opportunity of hearing the album with CD quality. I will report to the Digest their response and hope I have built up enough trust with Tony and Beryl and the Digest has enough respect from them to respond with the urgency that this matter deserves. Apart from the obvious 'God is dead' parallel, there's the line which goes "We're independent from someone" which I feel is in tune with Nietzsche's theme of freedom from the constraints of imposed Judeo-Christian morality. Maybe Gary was also hinting that in a sense he was soon to follow Zarathustra's example of renouncing the world due to disillusionment with the ignorance and depravity of the rabble (critics?) - "This dark facade ends", "This wreckage I call me, would like to leave you soon". I also recently purchased Nine Inch Nails' The Downward Spiral, and in the song 'Heresy' Trent Reznor is screaming out that God is dead and no-one cares, along with generally disparaging remarks about Christianity. Numan and Reznor have been alluded to as soul brothers of a sort, so maybe this is another common thread running through their music. Any comments would be appreciated. I assume that NUMA is probably Gary's best bet for inside the UK. It would be too expensive to sign with a major label and too costly for his career. As soon as one signs with Sony or Warner, you have to do what they tell you to do. I'm hoping, now that Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails) has completed his cover of "Metal" that, perhaps, Nothing Records/TVT/Interscope/Warner in the states might have some interest. I guess that might have more to do with how much backing he can do -- but, then again, look at Adam Ant's popularity of late. There seems to be one available now without 'The Plan'. This is a review that was sent by my mother: Tubeway Army - Replicas Music Collection MUSCD 509 At he time when Hole does Cars and Dave Grohl, once of Nirvana, performs Down in the Park, Gary Numan and his Tubeway Army are enjoying bonkers rock accoladery. This re-issue of the second Tubeway Army album -- a snapshot of the brief week in 1979 when Numan was a hip John Peel favourite -- shows why. Songs like Me! I Disconnect from You, Down in the Park and the vanguard monster hit Are 'Friends' Electric? not only helped the ungrateful Human League and Depeche Mode into the charts but also established Numan as a highly skilled and intuitive pop musician. The giant synth riffs and robot beats are derivitive of Low-era Bowie and Numan's true love, John Foxx-period Ultravox, but they had great tunes and even now are extraordinarily potent. Apart from Praying to the Aliens, which is still, frankly, crap. * * * * David Quantick I believe that's a 4 star rating. Anyway, I don't know what paper it's from, but if that's important, I'll find out. Nilo, you did not explicitly say you were going to tranfer your *vinyl* to CD and it sounds like you are just going to do one copy for yourself. That is perfectly legal, even in the USA. I may have assumed you were thinking you could make CD copies for everyone who wanted one. That would not be legal and is what I get upset about. > Is NUMA doing any good at all for Gary I wonder? (By the way is there > more to NUMA than Tony and Beryl?) Gary's business is in *bad* shape: > limited production facilities, no producer, no airplay, no video's, no > contract outside the UK, falling sales, etc. All this just now Gary > has found a new promising musical direction. Numa is basically Gary (musician, producer, engineer, mixer, cover artist), Tony (manager, tour organizer, businessman) and Beryl (Fan Club coordinator, costume consultant). It is strictly a family business. It seems like Gary is in a bit of a bind. They do not have the means or budget to promote Gary's work and for that reason they are always looking for a record deal with a larger company. The IRS deal has made them wary but they do want to sign with a big label if they can. I know they are especially interested in getting Gary's albums released in the USA. Gary does get airplay on independant radio stations in the UK but the big outlet, Radio 1 have ignored him for years. To gain increased UK sales he would have to do so despite the BBC. Gary needs some vehilce to bring him back into the public eye and respectability. The UK is famous for pushing advertisment jingles to the top of the charts. Gary needs something like that. I wonder what came of his work for that French perfume company. Gary has stopped making videos because they are expensive to make and get cvery little airplay on UK or European TV. BBC 1's Top of the Pops, wouldn't show it. His MACHINE & SOUL video did get shown on some satallite shows but that is not going to get the biggest exposure possible. I had high hopes after Gary supported OMD but nothing happened after that. Tony said sales for SACRIFICE halted the downward trend but were not as good as they had hoped (My reviews on the Internet didn't make it a big seller :-( ). > I believe NUMA is satisfied with the money they make by selling > whatever they can (compilations, live albums, unplugged, etc.), to the > hardcore fans, mainly in the UK. I would rather see Gary producing one > real quality album in three years than what he is producing at the > moment. They acknowledge their fan base continously and know that that is what keeps Gary's career going. Gary said M&S and Outland almost killed his career. I think they want to expand their operation but are loathed to invest in it for fear of it not working. I have tried to connect them with someone in a New York City fiml studio who is offering facilities and time gratis to help them along but so far nothing has happened to my knowledge. It is so frustrating as we all want to see Gary succeed and for more and more people to hear the music he is capable of producing. Most people only know of AFE and Cars and nothing of the 13 other albums he has released. Ideally it would be good for a big US company to sign him, promote the next album and use that to introduce them to Gary's back catalogue which I'd like to see issued on CD in the USA. Sigh, it's hard being a Numan fan at times. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Dept. of Biology Tel.
