GARY IS ON-LINE --------------- I've been waiting for the best time to break this news and now seems right. Gary and I have exchanged emails and we have settled on a way for him to be part of the Digest. He is willing to participate but on a strictly limited basis. He wants to protect his email address and restrict the time he has to spend on-line so he will not be participating fully. He does not intend to subscribe to the Digest but he is willing to answer questions. We have agreed that I will collate them for him. Once a month I will send the collected questions to Gary who will send the answers back to me to post to the Digest at a later date. Please do not ask me for Gary's email address. I have made a promise to him not to reveal it and hope you will understand his reluctance to be too public and spend too much time on-line. He is not in front of a computer as often as we are and has plenty of other things that keep him busy. I expect this to operate much like "Gary's Questions" in the UK Fan Club Newsletters. I will accept questions for Gary on a continuous basis. Please email them to me at: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu with Gary's Qs in the subject line. That will allow me to collect them all in the same directory and piece them together for forwarding to Gary. To avoid being flooded with questions there should be some guidelines. Please : 1. Keep the questions short. 2. Avoid questions which might require long, involved answers. 3. Be polite. 4. Do not ask too many all at once. There should be plenty of occasions to ask questions. If it becomes a problem I may have to restrict the numbers that can be asked by one person. 4. Make sure the answer is not already common knowledge. I may answer those questions rather than pass them on to Gary to save him time and effort. I reserve the right to edit, censor or reject questions if I deem them inappropriate. I will eliminate duplicates. Gary may refuse to answer certain questions as well. I am doing this because I want to make it a great success that Gary will enjoy doing and want to continue. We don't want to scare him off. FYI Gary is also trying to set up his own WWW homepage. INSTRUMENTAL ALBUM ------------------ Gary has just finished compiling an instrumental album called HUMAN. It is music taken from the film score sessions that Mike Smith and Gary wrote for The Unborn film a few years ago. Most of it didn't get onto the film and so will be unheard by most people. It will be on CD and Cassette and he believesthe release date will be sometime in October '95. !!BERSERKER CD!! ---------------- After many years of waiting and many months of contentious debate here in the Digest I am extraordinarily pleased to pass on the news that NUMA are also finally about to put out the "Berserker" CD again. Gary knows this "has caused a tad of concern" (his choice not mine - I think it's more than a tad myself) in the past but the wheels are in motion to have more pressed. YIPEE and other superlatives! If it is a general release all will be able to get it; if a UK Fan Club release Ron Cole should be able to acquire them for you. So, there it is. Significant news for a change. It was omitted from the orginal UK Beggars Banquet 2 albums on 1 CD releases of Gary's catalogue but last year BB UK reissued the catalogue pairing the same albums together but giving each album it's own disc and filling them out with b-sides and other non-album tracks. Most of the 8 discs are over 70 mins long and are packed with goodies that were only previously available on vinyl or the deleted Asylum volumes from Japan. Derek gave some info about the situation at NUMA in the last Digest. Now that Gary has complete control over his work he has produced an album that's far better than the albums he did for IRS. Sacrifice could have been produced better in my opinion though: musicians of the best class, engineers... I understand it's all a matter of money. Glad to know that I'm not alone in my quest for his work! I have been a fan since I heard "Cars" in 1980 on my brother's record player. I am not happy that more of his work hasn't made it so well in the U.S. I have and love the following CDs of Gary's. Exhibition I&II, Telekon/I, Assassin, Tubeway Army/Dance, The Pleasure Principle/Warriors, Replicas/The Plan, The Fury, Strange Charm, and Here I Am. I have been looking for "Cry, The Clock Said" for literally YEARS! I am happy to know that he did put it onto CD in the Asylum set. I just found that out yesterday and am overjoyed! I neeeeeed to get it on CD. I've got everything on CD except the White Noise tape that I have. I think it was done as a double album set with Berserker. I would like for someone to let me know if it is a double set, and if so, where I could acquire a copy on other than Tape or Album. I want it badly on CD. It has the best version of "Are Friends Electric?" that I've ever heard. I know he put it on a couple other discs live, but none are the same as the performance on White Noise. I don't know any other fans of Gary Numan and find it very difficult to get his work in stores. I've been curious about the fan club and have attempted to get in touch, but got no reply. I'm relieved to know that there are other people as interested and then some about Gary Numan as I am! Anyway, I'm originally from Minnesota, farm life, small town kind of youth. I found Gary's Telekon in the cut-out section in Pamida. (Wadena, Minnesota) I fell in LOVE with the music and was intrigued by the lyrics. I especially loved the different style of music than the mainstream. I was a self proclaimed "non-conformist" who was just searching for an identity and Gary was there for me to be even more strange and different. I loved Tubeway Army and I, Assassin and hungered for more. I even made a trip 3 hours away to Minneapolis to look for his music. I found White Noise there and I've been looking for it ever since. I mean, every time I go into a music store, it doesn't matter how long, I ALWAYS check the N section. Unfortunately, a lot of people have put him in the section marked "Gary Newman" or have never heard of anything of his except "Cars." It's a great song, mind you, but definitely not the only good song from his work. I think my favorite is "Cry the Clock Said." I wonder though, if that is so, only because I don't have it on CD. I always will want something I just can't find. Makes life interesting... Some of my other favorite artists are: Bjork, STP, Alice in Chains, Floyd, U2s old stuff moreso than the new, Talking Heads, Cocteau Twins, This Mortal Coil, and Oh how I LOOOOOVE Dead Can Dance. I want everything from them I can get. I guess I don't play any instruments, although I did mess around on the guitar for a while. I have wanted to learn though. I'm an Artist. I was going to school in Nebraska at the University of Nebraska at Omaha's college of Fine Arts. Loved it there, but my job transferred me here. (I'm now in Oklahoma) I love painting and drawing and sculpting and listening to music. I collect CDs. Well, I hope I can make some new friends within this network. Looking forward to reading your comments. Bry-- ------------------------------ Date: 07 Aug 95 15:15:09 EDT From: Subject: Introduction - Matthew Holbrook To: Good day to everyone on the list, I have to say that I was really pleased when I discovered a Numan presence on the Net. I only discovered the list by accident when browsing through a book in a bookshop. Well, as you can probably tell, my name is Matthew Holbrook. I'm 26, from the UK and a computer consultant and journalist. I've followed Numan since 1979 - when Are 'Friends' Electric? was moving up the charts to number one. A friend in the same street introduced me to Numan music. I was immediately hooked. In those days I was buying most of the singles and I bought The Pleasure Principle, Telekon and Dance. As time went on and we got to 1981/82 I started to move away from Numan. I was disappointed with Dance (although I love it now) and I found Numan's constant changes of character increasingly embarrassing. I was also ridiculed at school for liking him and money also started to become a problem. By the time he stopped charting in the UK in 1986, I had moved away completely. I occasionally gave The PP and Telekon a spin. And that was it until the early 1990s. Then I saw an advert in a music magazine for someone selling Numan merchandise. I applied for this list and started buying things from it. I was hooked! Before I knew it, I had caught up on 10 or so years of Numan. 7" and 12" singles, CDs, everything. I popped along to the Dream Corrosion tour in 1993 and was simply knocked out. It was a cracker - Jo The Waiter, We Are So Fragile, You Are In My Vision up against modern classics such as Shame and my favourite Numan song of all - I Don't Believe. This was the best concert I had ever been to. The Sacrifice tour in 1994 was almost as good. I thought perhaps a little too much of the new album was played - but there was still some excellent old stuff as well - The Dream Police, Everyday I Die and Meanstreet. In the summer of 1994 I also went to the convention in London. This was great and I danced my socks off until the early hours. In February 1995 it was off to Cheltenham and a disco organised by an enthusiastic Numanoid called Steve Davis. He puts on a disco twice a year - with 200,000 pounds worth of lights ($320,000) in a village hall with an extremely gothic feel. This lasted for five hours and was excellent. These are simply the best fan-organised Numan events anywhere. The next one is on 13 October. The following week it was off to Folkestone for the Numan Birthday bash and the first Numan All Nighter. We danced from around 9:30 at night right through until 6:00 the next morning. A couple of hours sleep and then it was on the way home. I'm now gearing up for the Numan Extravaganza in Manchester on 12th August. This will include stalls, videos, two live bands playing Numan covers, a five hour disco - complete with some of the lights from the Telekon tour. It's going to be great. I should also say that I'm setting up a web site for Numan. I've done about half of the work so far and hope to get it off the ground in the early Autumn. Now back to me. I've got a Yamaha SY85 synth which I tinker with when I've got time. I'm afraid I don't have the time to use it seriously. Most of my time is taken up with writing, surfing the net and listening to Numan - currently the Babylon series of back-catalogue CDs and the Dark Light double album from the Sacrifice tour! Numanoids won't like me for saying this, but I like most music. The closest Numand-type music is Depeche Mode, Human League etc. But I really do have wide ranging tastes! Apologies if you've heard a lot of this before, but as I'm new, I don't know what has been said before. I'm really looking forward to Numan stuff coming down the wire! Actually showed Numan 3 times, once during which I think was the Cars video. Next looked like around the time of Living Ornaments and the last was during a Dance video. Each shot only lasted about 5 seconds so can't be sure on the songs. What really suprised me was the last bit of the show. Actually showed about 30 seconds of Numan around time of Warriors flying in the WW2 era planes. Said that he was a formation aerobatic pilot besides still making music. Unfortuantely they didn't elaborate on the music he is doing now. During this time they were playing (of course) Cars, probably the only song they were sure people who watch MTV today might know. Well enough of that, would be interested if anyone else saw this. Did see that someone did mention that they are playing old videos/interviews. Does anyone have a copy of these? To: gary numan digest As a few of the members wrote about saving the money to go to England (perhaps during next years tour) to see Gary in concert, it's prompted me to write to you all since I did just that in 1988 for the Metal Rhythm Tour. All I can tell you is SAVE, SAVE, SAVE, because it's not cheap to fly to England and see a few shows. My 7 day trip in 1988 was about $2000 USD and I'm a fairly conservative person by most people's standards. In any case, I saw Gary at all three shows at the Astoria Theatre in London in 1988 and I can tell you that it was "open" seating - first come, first serve. There were Numan fans lined up outside the theatre 4 to 6 hours before the doors even opened. That's dedication! I can also tell you who might consider flying to England to see Gary's shows that Beryl saved me a pair of tickets for each of the three night's that I saw him at the box office just by writing to her and asking her to do it since I was coming from over 2000 miles away. Very nice of her to do that, but then again I was also impressed with meeting Gary after the second show too! Just a few notes to micromuzak and lindstrj from the last digest. Good luck to you going to England to see Gary and all! I can tell you my experience seeing Gary in concert and meeting the man is something I'll never forget. If you're wondering why my name and my adress don`t match , it`s because I use my " friend`s " computer (yeah, sometimes he`s electric ...) and I don`t bother changing the settings. Downloaded the discography this week , there are a few omissions (2 versions of Your fascination , 2 compilation albums on Receiver records & a single , Like a refugee ( I wont cry) on which Gary`s voice is simply / utterly fantastic in case you haven`t heard it. When is the next update planned ? Dream Corrosion is listed but I keep seeing people talking about Dark Light , are they one and the same? Which brings me to what I`m missing : I still remember Adrenalin My world storm Dream corrosion( aka Dark Light ?) Not bad for a guy that lives in a city where about 2 stores carry his music! Any chance of my finding them? Last year the music for Cars was used here in Quebec for a beer commercial (Labatt`s Ice), complete with rotating pyramids a la Pleasure Principle era ,it was a very sci-fi / numanish piece, but how does Gary feel about his music being associated with this product ? I thought he didn`t drink or has the copyright expired or what ? Then again if he was well paid for it`s use why not... Seems a LOT of us are planning a trip in the UK for `96 ,I`m very much interested in keeping up on this...As for meeting him I guess we`d all want that and I think he really likes his fans but how would you react if a bunch of fans from overseas think they`re somehow more special than others? Of course from our perspective we are and we help keep the dream alive just like any fan , our problem is being so far and out of touch, we`d really hope for something extra like a chat or an autograph. You can be sure that if we`d live in the UK we`d have seen him again and again and I for one wouldn`t feel so frustrated , I could see him tour once a year. How do you reconcile our needs and his wish for some distance ...? I ask this for the sake of doing it properly and out of respect for the artist. I`d like everyone to really enjoy the experience. ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 07 Aug 1995 11:39:48 +0000 (GMT) From: Andy McHaffie Subject: vinyl To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Ive decided to get rid of all my vinyl.
