I was wondering how much it would cost if we of the digest pooled our resources and took out an add in a magazine like Spin or Details let`s say to advertize on behalf of Gary & Numa? I sure someone somewhere is in a position to pick up this idea and bring it about, co-ordinating it and setting it up. It`s already been suggested we bring Gary over for a show but this would be more realistic and could help him (and us) don`t you think? Any comments everyone? Michel Lafontaine ------------------------------ Date: 14 Aug 95 14:27:57 EDT From: Subject: Discography To: I've just been looking at the discography - a very comprehensive work. I've got a couple of small observations. The That's too Bad/Bombers doublepack 7" was reference BACK 2, not BACK 1. Secondly, Rael is not Jess Lidyard but Bob Simmonds. Jess only stayed to do the demo tapes. He returned later to play on The Tubeway Army Album - where everyone was credited with their own name. At least I think I'm right! Matthew Holbrook ------------------------------ Date: 14 Aug 95 14:27:59 EDT From: Subject: Discography - further revelations on Rael To: Just another quickie on the infamous 'Rael' and my previous message. I now think we are both right. Checking my records, a picture of Bob Simmonds was on the single and the name 'Rael' appeared underneath him. He also played in the live shows. But, it was Jess Lidyard who actually played the drums for the recording. So, was he Rael or was he not? And does it really matter?! A question in one of the fan club newsletters in the early 1980s asked the same question and Gary answered that Rael was indeed Bob. I have many updates and corrections since the last update that I made, but I may ask members of this digest to send me information on the few pieces of Numan material that I don't own. If everyone is fine with this, I'll begin work right away on it and with David Datta's assistance "uploading" it. I first heard Gary Numan in 1978 when I spent a couple of months in England. The first song that I heard was "Are Friends Electric." For the next five or six years I collected a number of his albums as well as some of the older Tubeway Army ones. I must admit that I haven't really listened to too many of his songs lately (mainly because I no longer have a turntable). However, I have always wondered what he is doing. I think the last time I had heard his name was sometime in the mid to late eighties when I read an article that he was going into retirement and planning to write scores for movies. All time favourites: Are Friends Electric, Cry the Clock Said, In a Subway Called "You" ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Aug 1995 10:34:32 +1000 From: Ashley Fletcher Subject: Introduction To: Numan List Subject: Time: 10:30 AM OFFICE MEMO Introduction Date: 17/8/95 Hi I'm the only Numan fan in Australia (debate welcome). I arrived in Australia in 1980 armed only with a cassette copy of the newly released Telekon. I then proceeded to build a healthy collection of all material up to Strange Charm (Do many people have the head shaped picture disc single of Berserker? Is it rare or not?), at which point (ie. the cross over to CD's) material became very hard to find and very expensive on import. I actually haven't heard any material at all after Outland. Can anyone tell me how good it is or what style it's in. Outland wasn't bad, but I much prefer the Replicas-Telekon period, Dance and I, Assassin were also excellent in a warmer way. Berserker is probably my favourite. At the moment I don't play any instruments but have always thought about buying a keyboard or two and a drum machine. My other musical interests are extensive and include The Sisters of Mercy, PWEI, Depeche Mode, Def FX, Nosferatu, Vangelis, Ultravox (and the rest of that scene), Leather Strip, NIN (first album), etc., etc. Although I don't buy his stuff anymore - I still listen to him on a weekly basis and enjoy watching Micromusic occasionally. Out of interest how many people are on the Mailing List and how many countries are represented? Again you'll need luck finding it. >Tony B.- do you have it for sale? I have it but it is one of the vinyl items I am holding onto, I'm afraid. Chocolate Chip Kudos are in order for Derek, who continues to make things happen for all of us Numanoids. Thanks Derek! About the Berserker video, I think the PAL format and the US release are the same. The track listing on the back of the US video seeems to be wrong. Does anyone have a high quality stereo version of the long version of Micromusic that could transferred to DAT? I realize this is probably impossible but maybe, just maybe there is a chance!!! Thanks, KevinL1712@aol.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 13 Aug 1995 09:53:49 -0700 (PDT) From: Lisa Mesplay Subject: Numan in "Dangerous Minds" To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Pleased to report that I am NOT going crazy. If anybody heard the radio spots for the movie "Dangerous Minds," did you notice the four-note synth descending progression at the very end? Sounded suspiciously Numanish. Well, we went to see the movie yesterday and stayed through the music credits. Lo and behold! Gary wrote one of the songs for a rapper (sorry, I don't remember the name of the song or the rapper -- not my genre) which contained that four-note sample from "Cars"! The incongruity of Numan credits in a movie containing mostly rap is worth the price of admission. Can one of you hardcore types find out why Gary became involved with the soundtrack project? ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 95 20:45:23 +0800 From: lindstrj@cadvision.com Subject: Numan Merchandise To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Many of us have bemoaned the fact that we can't get ahold of any Numan "collectibles". Those few that were made available have been, for the most part, bootleg and of dubious quality. I offer a partial solution. I would like you to take a look at the following and let me know, via email, what you think of this idea as a whole. If the response is generally positive, I'll go ahead with it. /===================== I went down to a local business today with my copy of "Telekon" under my right arm. I emerged with my copy of "Telekon" under my right arm, and a Telekon Mouse Pad under my left. Price: $9.95 + 7% GST = $10.65 (Canadian). This thing is *QUITE* cool! So here's the poop: I will have Numan-related stuff MADE (to order) and ship it to you at my cost (including shipping costs). Here's what's available (no prices yet): Merchandise /========== o Calendars o Coffee Mugs o Watches (have Gary's face staring at you when you check the time!) o T-Shirts (front-only, front-and-back, 8.5x11 or 11x17, etc.) o Sweaters (same) o Aprons o Baseball Caps o Keychains (largish pic) o Jigsaw Puzzles (not overly challenging - large pieces) (Note: the fabrics, used in the caps, sweaters, etc., are white: no other colors are currently available. Similarly, the coffee mugs are white too.) Images /===== o Every album cover (except Asylum 1 and the Babylon series, unless someone can send these to me as JPG images) o Inside cover art from those CD's (except as noted above, plus not including Berserker). Note that as far as the "Original 8" albums are concerned... while I've got most on vinyl, the album jackets are too large to be scanned entirely. You can request a partial scan, or settle for anything available on the CD reissues. o Assorted other NumaPics (a small collection, an electronic catalog may be made available soon) I'm looking into the idea of setting up a web page that'll have all this stuff on it, including the ability to preview the images that would be shown on the merchandise that you ordered. ANY image could be used - if you've got some great Numan shots that might look great on a T-shirt or ball cap, please contribute 'em. Note that this isn't limited to JUST Numan stuff, but bear a couple of things in mind: 1) I'm doing this at-cost, so any non-Numan stuff will be done "when I get around to it". This is being done as a service to GARY NUMAN FANS first and foremost. The folks at Laser Plus (that's who does the actual work) will be keeping a set of diskettes on-file that contain my personal collection of images, so I'll be able to order stuff by telephone and have them ship it to you. Non-Numan stuff (and stuff with images outside of my collection) will, necessarily, entail a trip down to the store, and I can guarantee that I'll only be able to get down there once a week. (They're equipped with a hundred thousand dollars worth of hardware but not a modem in the place, sorry). You can, however, avoid a delay by emailing me your image prior to sending in the money. 2) You'll have to provide the image file. Payment: The best bet is a money order or bank draft. These are, for all intents and purposes, CASH, and I can cash them and buy your merchandise the same day. Cheques: I'll accept cheques, but bear in mind a couple of things: 1) I won't order your merchandise until the cheque clears. 2) Cheques will take 1-2 weeks to clear if drawn on a Canadian bank or trust company. Foreign cheques (ie: American banks) will take, I'm told, between 20 and 25 BUSINESS DAYS (ie: 6-8 weeks, thereabouts). Currency: is Canadian. Period. Cheques and money-orders sent in any other currency will be returned (this includes US dollars - there's an exorbitant fee involved in the conversion). One Canadian dollar, at the time of this writing, can be purchased for roughly 74 cents US, so you'll save big-time by making the conversion at your end. Taxes: all orders are subject to the 7% GST (Goods & Services Tax). This tax will be built-in to the advertised purchase price: I won't surprise you with it. When I draw up this catalog of stuff, you'll be able to QUICKLY determine the price (just add merchandise + shipping, and shipping will be cheaper per-item if you order more than one item). Is it worth it? Well, only you can be the judge. Me? I'm both a Numan fan and a satisfied customer. Prior to writing this, I've checked out the quality of the merchandise and found it to be quite good. I've spoken to a few past customers and they appear to be quite happy with the products they've ordered as well (including T-shirts - they don't seem to wear out after just a few washes... a problem that has snuck up on more than a few Numan fans in the past). As to pricing, I believe it's quite competitive. The RETAIL pricing ranges from a low of $5.95 for the small keychain, up to $34.95 for the sweater (add $10 if you want a front-and-back). The manager seems amenable to the idea of arranging a discount for us, and any discount I can manage will be reflected in the catalog price. I love my Telekon Mouse Pad and I can't recommend them enough. Be the first (and only) on YOUR block to have one! Or maybe a Replicas Mouse Pad? How about a Sacrifice Mouse Pad... :-) //----------------------------------------------------------------- // lindstrj@cadvision.com aka Joey Lindstrom // If you're mindless, please take mine ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 14 Aug 1995 13:45:02 +0000 From: spmoo@global.co.za (gavin moffat) Subject: NUMAN ON TOUR To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hello there! I remember reading quite recently about an organized tour that follows Gary on all of his concert dates. >From memory (and that is all you'll get, because I have no clue where I saw this info), this tour was organized by one of the people who seem to always be around Gary, who interview him and who was supposed to write that book mentioned in the Exhibition release, but never made it. All I remember of the name is Peter Gilbert or Paul Drake or some other combination of these four words (but definitely not Peter Paul or Paul Peter :-)). Does this ring a bell with anyone reading the Digest? I do remember that you could register for this tour, and everything was organized, including transportation, lodging, concert tickets, etc. for all shows on the tour. Mind you, I don't know if such a tour is being organized for the upcoming Spring 1996 tour. I am only saying that this has been mentioned somewhere, and I suppose it has happened for some earlier tour. Nonetheless, it would be interesting to find out more info on this. I'm sure NUMA (Beryl) would know more about this, because I suspect this Peter Gilbert (or whatever) guy is a familiar face around the Webb family. Sorry for the long text. I hope this info is of some use. The reference number is MUSCD509 from Music Collection International. The full lyrics are included and there are new liner notes from Vox magazine's Steve Malins. The original artwork is included and there are some new pictures on the back of the CD booklet. Behind the CD is the picture used for "Are 'Friends' Electric". The CD is available on budget and it looked great. Matthew ------------------------------ Date: 13 Aug 95 14:53:05 EDT From: Subject: Report from the Numan Extravaganza - 12 Aug 95 To: Hello everyone, I've just arrived back from the Manchester Numan Extravaganza. This was a great event, although the travel problems experienced by a lot of the attendees marred it slightly. A small stage had been built in the hotel. An impressive lighting set was used and most of the letter 'T' from the Teletour '80 lights had been rigged up. Its panels were able to glow red, white and amber. Two live bands were present - each playing for about half an hour. First On was Glasshouse - they've toured with Numan twice before. This time they covered tracks such as Scar and Films. The other band was GN2. They covered tracks such as Down In The Park, The Joy Circuit, Call Out The Dogs, Cars and America. Both bands did their own tracks as well; both bands were excellent. Gary himself was present at the event. He stayed right until the end at about two on Sunday morning and then moved with the people staying in the hotel to the bar. I managed to get a few minutes with Gary. We talked about the web site I'm creating and I got a couple of autographs. He wants me to help in get to grips with this thing we call the Internet. Ade Orange (keyboard/bass player from the Dream Corrosion and Sacrifice tours and at least one earlier one) was there and so was Gemma (Gary's girlfriend). There was also a large Fan Club stall. Unusually, Beryl was not there. The disco also went well - and we managed to complete it without setting off the fire alarms this time! Tracks greeted with most enthusiasm were I Don't Believe, Scar, Love and Nepalm and A Question of Faith 12". These also happen to be some of my favourite tracks. A video lounge was also available with all the up-to-date video footage. I only managed to see a bit of this (I was too busy dancing) and most of this was to do with Like A Refugee single from 1994. A good time was had by all. The next events for me are the mega disco in Cheltenham (13 Oct 95) and The second Numan All-nighter (Folkestone - 25 Nov 95). To: numan digest Lots of stuff I want to say,so here goes: I was just about to suggest that we try to get Gary on-line, but since I already had a letter on the digest coming up I decided to wait; serves me right! At least it shows that I was thinking in the right direction...But it`s great news, regardless of who thought of it first. I guess I`ll have to sign as Andre instead of Michel,it seems to confuse a lot of people! But then again as long as I get the answers to my questions and feedback I shouldn`t complain :-) When Gary did Change your mind and Radio heart he charted with both here in Quebec, and the videos were shown too.Do you know if he`s thinking about another collaboration ? He should keep it in mind since it worked twice and they say that 3`s a (strange) charm. The trick here would be to work with someone who`s distributed in north america already... I`ve also been thinking that he might do a cover of a well known 80`s song, maybe dance oriented since they sell well and there has been an upsurge of interest for 80`s music; witness the new-new wave... If Numa is flooded with requests for this proposed single wouldn`t it put them in a good position?I am NOT suggesting he changes style but I think he could pull it off since he`s done covers before and rather well too. The same logic applies to the proposed unplugged album and I agree with Sue Ashworth on this, after all isn`t the point of an unplugged to feature the songs in a new light?Everyone seems scared that he`ll include Wires on it!For those who are really against the idea can you imagine We have a technical...? Thanks Derek for your answers about the discography and what I was missing. for the record I was looking for the B sides of the singles actually since I`ve got the albums and my goal is to have at least one copy of every song preferably on Cd if not on vinyl or cassette. So if anyone has these B sides:Puppets (original or ext),Adrenalin,Love is the doctor,Ice house and Shame that would bring me up to date (I think). I realize there is very little chance of finding them but if someone has them and could at least make me a 4-track cassette of them I`d get to hear the songs at last. Dark Light wont be too hard to find if it came out 2 months ago,I just hope I can get my hands on Dream corosion since it`s 1 year old... If Berserker comes out as a fan-club release how do I contact Ron Cole (and who is he?)That one I don`t want to miss on CD! Me thinks we`ll end up chartering a plane to go to England by the looks of things! And when we get there let`s fill up the first few rows with North American fans.Maybe we should take a bus to the show instead of a taxi:)!
