Confirmed dates so far are: Tues. April 2 Southampton Guildhall (2 hours SW of London) Wed. April 3 Guildford Civic Hall (30 mins or so S of London) Thur. Arpil 4 Birmingham Town Hall (2 hours NW of London) Fri. April 5 Manchester Apollo (4 hours NW of London) Sat. April 6 Hammersmith Labatts Apollo (in London) UK Fan Club ticket prices are #10 for Southampton and Guildford, #12 for Manchester and London. I expect more dates to be added but the Fan Club are selling tickets only for 4 shows. Numanoids on Tour There will be a coach tour following Gary as usual, organized by Peter Gilbert who has been friends with Gary for a long time and does the "Images" interviews. This is a luxury coach with nights being spent in the same hotels as Gary and the band each night. I think everyone gets a chance to meet the band and talk after the shows in a party situation. Sounds like a great thing for fans. For an application form send an sae (with an international reply coupon I would think for mailing abroad) to: Numanoids on Tour P.O. We even have at least one other on this list although he has been scarce lately. We had two Aussie's very early on back in 1992 too (Eric Lecis, Stephen Smith - still with us?). >I actually haven't heard any material at all after Outland. >Can anyone tell me >how good it is or what style it's in. Outland wasn't bad, but I much prefer >the Replicas-Telekon period, Dance and I, Assassin were also excellent in a >warmer way. Berserker is probably my favourite. MACHINE AND SOUL, the album after OUTLAND, took Gary in a slighly new direction from OUTLAND. It did not continue the trajectory of METAL RHYTHM and OUTLAND but rather combined the two. IMO METAL RHYTHM was a fairly consistant and original album with the music exhibiting more guitar than before. OUTLAND (or METAL RHYTHM NATION 1814 as I sometimes call it :-) was a slave to dance rhythms that did not work for me. MACHINE AND SOUL stepped away from those rhythms and brought back the guitar played by the flamboyant Kipper who many consider to be a distraction. It has some gems - notably the ballads 'I Wonder' and 'Love Isolation' and also 'Cry'. Generally M&S is not one of most fans' favourites but it was regarded as a step in the right direction after OUTLAND but it still left most wanting more. Gary himself feels these albums lack "Numaness". Gary delivered with SACRIFICE, last year's album. He basically threw out all the influences that had been pushing him hither and thither and got back to basics. Gone are the funky guitar licks, gone are the wailing female backing vocals, back in are brooding synthesizers. It was Gary's most personal album since TELEKON. Each track has a dominating percuissive basis that annoys some but it does not cover up the genuine Numaness that is layered iunderneath. It is dark, moody and well worth getting. Personally it is one of my top 3 albums by Gary and represents the biggest return to form I have ever known of any artist I have liked in the past. One could say it brings together some of the best things Gary has done over the years with a 90s gothic twist. >Out of interest how many people are on the Mailing List and how many >>countries are represented? I realize this is probably impossible >>but maybe, just maybe there is a chance!!! There's also a chance that pigs may fly but it won't happen soon. Gary does want to tour outside the UK but will only do so in the USA if he has an album distribution deal and some financial support from a US label. IRS would not help him when he was with them. Gary is actively looking for a US record deal but really needs one with a major label to get the exposure he is wanting. If Gary does tour the US it will likely be on a limited basis unless he gets a big hit. One might hope he would at least play say New York, LA, Chicago and maybe Seattle, Houston and Miami or the like. This is pure sepculation. For now, don't hold your breath, or start saving for a trip to the UK for when he is touring there (next tour is early April 1996). But first, THANK YOU DEREK for all you have done and continue to do. It does not go unappreciated. Regarding the "it Came From the 89s" thing on MTV: I know a producer there who said he will forward a message from me to the producer of that 80s segment telling him that Numan is currently still producing great music. I told him MTV did a great disservice to Numan and his fans by not reporting on current activity. On that show they brought us up to date with the Thompson Twins' newest project, Babble, so there was no reason to be so sloppy with their research regarding Gary and A Flock of Seagulls (who also just out out a great new album. If anyone wants I can email them their label info. AFOS is on a small independent in Florida now!). To the gentleman who inquired about pooling our resources for an ad in SPIN or other magazines: I work in that business; let me tell you how much a full page ad costs. Ready? Are you sitting down? Anywhere from $30,000.00 to about $100,000.00 depending on how many times it runs, color/b&w, etc. Even the small ads inside those magazines (like 1/4 page) are between $4 - 8000.00. That leaves us with the classifieds, which, for a few hundred dolllars, probably aren't worth it. I don't think that type of ad would give us the effect we're looking/hoping for. Great idea, though. And finally, to try and clarify this whole Marilyn Manson thing again: They have a CD and a CD single out. The 6-song single is called "Lunchbox" and has a cover (track #3) of "Down in the Park". The other 5 songs are mixes of "Lunchbox"; one of those mixes is simply called "Metal". It is not Gary's song. MM just got cute with naming their remixes with titles other that the usual Song (blah blah blah remix). It is not a bad disc. They are a strange band, certainly, but that tune is pretty cool and has some great production courtesy of Mr. Trent Reznor. The catalog # is 95806-2 and it is on Nothing/Interscope (part of Atlantic). Also, I have some NUMAN FOR SALE: I will post this list every few weeks (for people new to the Digest) so all you regulars out there bear with me. I am selling some of my Numan collection because I have multiples. Here's the current list; email me to reserve any items and I'll email you with mailing info. Thanks! My name is Tom Paden. I'm an electronics engineer, rapidly approaching 40 (or as I prefer, 28H) & I've been a Numan fan since I first heard "Cars" on the radio back in '79. I also listen to Kate Bush, Enya, Stanard Ridgeway, Depeche Mode, Randy Newman, blah, blah, blah. But who I'm really excited about is Neo Eon One! Never heard of him? Hopefully you will. He's a consultant where I work who's not only a brillant engineer, but his music is the closest thing I've heard to Gary's work! He's also an aficionado. And since Gary seems to be busy flying WWII aircraft (anyone else catch that on MTV's "It Came From The '80s"?), it's none too soon. My meager music talents allow me to bang out some ragtime on the piano now & then. I look forward to my first mailings. tcp ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Aug 95 05:02:05 +0800 From: lindstrj@cadvision.com Subject: Miscellaneous mutterings To: numan@cs.uwp.edu First off, in regards to the "homemade Numan merchandise" I mentioned in the last digest... Since creating my Telekon mouse pad, I've been back, and picked up three more wonderful little trinkets. The first is a keychain with a graphic (about 1.5 inches by 1.5 inches) inside. For this, I chose the wonderfully-colorful cover for "Isolate - The Numa Years". Next, I went for the T-shirt, and this time I chose the cover of "The Fury". Looks sharp, but they messed up and cropped off about an inch off the bottom (so it seems to say "The Furu") - so they gave it to me FOR FREE. I'll save that money and have another one made. Finally, the coup de grace: I took the simplistic graphic from "Tubeway Army" (black stylistic outline of Gary's face on a white background with some black lettering) and used that for the baseball cap (which is also all white), and this *REALLY* looks sharp! I'm still waiting to have a good sit-down chat with the manager there to discuss all the details of the arrangements that we might make. Things are looking promising but there's one down side that I just found out about: color costs extra. They didn't charge me extra for color on the mouse-pad - either this is a "loss leader" or the guy who did it forgot to charge me extra. Whatever - it's a $5 charge over and above normal pricing. I think I can negotiate this way down: the reason for it is that the initial graphic is printed to their color laser printer - this is more expensive and definitely TIME CONSUMING. What I'm looking at is an arrangement where our orders are placed by me over the phone and then placed on a lower priority (say, delivery within 72 hours). Normally, your order is completed while you wait (the t-shirt took 35 minutes), but under a low priority arrangement, the printing phase can be done while other orders are being processed, thus greatly reducing the labor costs for these orders. We'll have to see (and I still need to see what kind of interest there is from YOU - please email me). In the meantime, there's not much that I've got by way of Numan images that are NOT color. About all I've got are the covers to Tubeway Army and Sacrifice, and the latter is (let's face it) a poor choice for this sort of thing because of its almost total lack of contrast (ie: unless your friends look at your hat, t-shirt, or mug REALLY closely, all they're gonna see is a black square). Ade Orange Someone mentioned him in the last digest (as having appeared at the Manchester party) in regards to being a part of some NumaTours. He has also performed on at least one of Gary's albums (I don't have credits for Berserker). Specifically, Strange Charm, on the tracks "My Breathing" and "Strange Charm" (interestingly enough, the two best tracks on the album). Also, here's some trivia for ya: Rrussell Bell - hey, remember this guy? On all of Gary's early early stuff? How many of you were aware that he also performed on 1986's "Strange Charm", 1989's "Metal Rhythm" (aka "New Anger"), and even 1991's "Outland"? Chris Payne also appears on both "Strange Charm" and "Metal Rhythm". Here's some more: Jess Lidyard makes a cameo appearance on "The Need", another track from Strange Charm. Folks, we're all dying for a re-release of "Berserker" - but now that we've almost got that one, let's all push for a re-release of "Strange Charm"... this is really a very fine album (with the huge exception of "I Can't Stop", which is this album's answer to "Emotion" - ick!)... although by now you're all tired of my telling you that "My Breathing" is Gary's greatest song of all time. ;-) Do you think their parents named them "Rrussell" and "Ade"? Come to think of it.... "Orange"? :-) //----------------------------------------------------------------- // lindstrj@cadvision.com aka Joey Lindstrom // If you're mindless, please take mine // Numanoids On Tour '96 ------------------------------ Date: Thu, 17 Aug 1995 16:11:49 -0400 From: DavidLeck@aol.com Subject: Mouse pads and such... To: numan@cs.uwp.edu The idea about having our own Numan memorabilia created is a good one. I forgot who posted the original message (Sorry...), but they stressed that funds needed to be Canadian. Maybe one of the US subscribers could serve as middleman. They could compile all the orders, receive the money, have it converted to Canadian $, and then forward it to the proper people up north. (Sorry that I'm not volunteering for this - I would do it if I could find the time). I think First Album, Replicas, Pleasure Principle, and I Assassin would all make excellent mouse pads. If we got a large number of orders (all for the same design) and sent them all in at once, we could probably get a really good price on them. It would also probably be a bit easier on the manufacturer to just belt them all out at one time. Now all we need is some overly generous individual person to volunteer to coordinate this. Any takers? To: Someone at work said to me this week that Gary writes a column in a UK football magazine. Well, I'd never heard about this so I challenged them to bring it in. It arrived today and I think it's a piss-taker. The magazine in question is called The Onion Bag and it looks like an adult comic. Gary does indeed seem to have a section. However, I don't think it's anything to do with him as such - even though his picture appears at the top and it's made to sound as though it's written by him. The text at the top of the page is as follows: "Gary Numan's Celebrity Showbiz Product Testing Department It's the synthesiser cyborg's soccer supermarket sweep! Greetings earthlings! It's me again, Numan the Humanm, as famous and mysterious as ever and I'm joined this month by some super 'biz' pals at the futuristic digital computerised controls of my testing dept." The text consists of reviews of videos, books, games etc. It includes various insults such as "Rick (Wakeman) is one up on me because I live with my mother and he's married to a model." The text concludes with a summary of ratings - the Numanometer. Five stars = The Pleasure Principle. Four stars - Love Needs No Disguise. Three stars Are 'Friends' Electric? Two stars - Me, I Disconnect From You. One star - I Die, You Die. Does anyone know anything about this crap? Matthew P.S. Knowing my luck, this is a Numan-sanctioned project! ------------------------------ Date: 17 Aug 95 15:50:08 EDT From: Subject: Peter Gilbert etc. To: For those of who have asked, the two prolific organisers of Numan events in the UK are Peter Gilbert and Francis Drake. They organised the recent Numan Extravaganza and are also hosting the second Numan All-Nighter in November. They are also running a coach that will be following Gary around on tour next year - and it will be possible to stay in the same hotels as the man himself.
