To: Numan Digest I was reading in the Discography that the only cover was by Robert Palmer. There is actually another one by Tik & Tok - they do "A Child with the Ghost" with the help of Gary, Tessa Niles, Martin Elliot and Pat Kyle. Gary also plays keyboards on another song on the album, while Rrussell plays vitar, bass and piano on yet another song. The album is called Intolerance and was released on Survival Records in England. Overall it's a prety good album. As I'm new to this newsletter I don't know whether this is common knowledge or a novel morsel of info. Also, when I was at school back in 1981 a band called James Freud (handclaps on Telekon) and Berlin played a lunchtime concert and did a cover of Me, I Disconnect from You. Ashley (Australia) ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 21 Aug 1995 14:53:29 -0400 From: SCaszatt@aol.com Subject: Dark Light/Assorted Stuff To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I finally got my copy of DARK LIGHT in the mail last week. So, I figured I'd share my thoughts about it. (I realize I'm about three weeks behind everyone else's reviews though.) Overall, I believe it's the best live Numan album that I've heard. I may not have heard all of them, but of those that I own (SKIN MECHANIC, WHITE NOISE, DREAM CORROSION and, of course, DARK LIGHT) it's the superior disc by far. The production and the performances are top-notch. After DREAM CORROSION's absymal production, I was relieved to be able to hear the high end. (DREAM CORROSION was a disappointment because, in my opinion, the performances were great, marred by the retched mix.) DARK LIGHT has some great moments: The re-arranged "Everyday I Die" is a breath of fresh air. "Listen to the Sirens", "Friends" and "Meanstreet" are all proof-positive that Gary can still kick when he wants to (and he sounds like he's enjoying himself in the process). "Jo the Waiter" sounds great. "Do You Need the Service?", "Stormtrooper In Drag" and "The Dream Police" were unexpected surprises. The stuff from SACRIFICE sounds great live, especially "A Question of Faith" and "Love and Napalm." Faults? Well, not many that I could find. Some people made an issue about the possibility of Gary using DAT backing tracks and possibly enhancing his vocals. I didn't mind the DAT stuff. I actually liked it when the live drums would kick in over the taped percussion tracks on the stuff from SACRIFICE. As a matter of fact, I really can't think of anything at all that I don't like about the album...except the fact that I would have liked to heard more older stuff get the treatment given to those that were included. That, and the fact that the disc makes me want to see Gary in concert more than I did (If that's possible.) Also, I caught the "It Came From the 80's" special on MTV and was, as I know many of you were, disappointed that Gary's recent music was overlooked in favor of his flying planes. It was great to finally see Gary flying, which I'd never seen before, but I'd have rather heard a snippet of something from SACRIFICE or maybe a shot of the covers of recent albums to show that he's still active musically. The other night I was driving some friends home from a night of playing pool and I had a mix tape of Gary in my tape player. One of them asked me "What are we listening to?" When I told him it was Gary Numan, he gave the usual "Who?" response. But, then he remembered "Cars" and actually started getting interested in the music. (" The Seed of a Lie" was on at the time.) He told me that he'd heard "Cars" on an '80's flashback show on the radio and he said that the DJ asked "Whatever happened to him? He was really good." The station has an Internet address...so I'm going to fill them in! (Not that they'll care, but I'll feel better.) "I'm just another old story..." I'm glad that you went and saw the movie and let it be known. Actually I can hear more than four notes of cars in the song. Well guess I'll have to go see it now, I was going to anyway for the same reason you did! Thanks , p.s. It does seem like there would be interest enough. I also have a question not for Gary but for the readership in general: are there video's for the Sacrafice songs? I have met Gary Numan on several occasions and I can't fault him, he is very polite although occasionally a cheeky begger, one time he nearly head butted me. I'm using my boyfriend's email, cause he lets me. I've been to several concerts in the UK, 8 at a time sometimes. I've been to several discos which were organised by the fans, I've also organised two myself. I also like Depeche Mode, NIN, Abba (Ha, bet that got ya!), dark wave, industrial, German (I wish they released more here), new wave, new romantics, lots of other stuff that you would not want to here about I'm sure. I got A Question of Faith played at the alternative nightclubs here, I've had success getting Metal Rhythm tracks played previously also, but I had to do a lot of nagging and complaining then, people like Numan here but the Djs are affraid to let their hair down. I'm studying Marketing and the Media at Murdoch University. Bored yet? Good well I'm off, my boyfriend has just got the whip out and he doesn't like to be kept waiting. "I'm a poser can't you see....." ------------------------------ Date: 23 Aug 95 18:35:36 EDT From: Subject: Live lyrics To: Gary is famed for forgetting words when singing live. He also does quite a bit of ad-libbing - particular on "Are 'Friends' Electric?" and "Me! I Disconnect from You." I've just been listening to the bootleg CD from the Birmingham part of the Sacrifice tour. On this Gary seems to be particularly bad with his lyrics. For example, about half of a "A Question of Faith" is wrong. It makes me wonder whether he tinkers with his own live recordings more than we realise? Thanks, David. But so far, you and I seem to be the only ones who think so. > I > forgot who posted the original message (Sorry...), but they stressed that > funds needed to be Canadian. This is because it costs more for ME to make the conversion than it would to have you do it at the source. I dunno 'bout down there, but up here I can walk into a post office and purchase a postal money order for $1.75 - I can then purchase American funds with no additional surcharge. I'm sure something similar must be available down there (a bank draft in Canadian funds, bank money order, etc. You can also write your cheque with the specification "Canadian Funds", but this takes a while to clear and might result in a *BIG* penalty imposed by your bank if the account is not a Canadian-dollar account). Either way, I gotta fork over Canadian currency when I buy the stuff. > Maybe one of the US subscribers could serve as middleman. They could compile > all the orders, receive the money, have it converted to Canadian $, and then > forward it to the proper people up north. (Sorry that I'm not volunteering > for this - I would do it if I could find the time). It would be a good idea *IF* we had a whole lot of interest. Doesn't appear that way. Similarly, the idea of getting bulk discounts... won't apply unless we get LOTS of sales (ie: in the hundreds), and even then it'll only REALLY get the price down on the smaller items (long story but we'd be able to get maximum use out of the transfer paper used without any loss in quality). > I think First Album, Replicas, Pleasure Principle, and I Assassin would all > make excellent mouse pads. Agreed, although I really like my Telekon one... mostly black with some nice red contrast there (plus Gary's visage smack dab in the middle). I think the "Isolate" cover would also do nicely, as would "White Noise" (I had to flip a coin between that one and Telekon for my first mouse pad). By the way, the first album (Tubeway Army) makes an EXCELLENT design for the hats and t-shirts because it already has a white background - thus, there's no "frame" to the picture. It's a little plainer (just a stylized outline of Gazzer's face) but still quite sharp... and, because there's no colour, it's also cheaper. Myself, I went for The Fury just cuz I thought Gary looked so cool with that dickie-bow. :-) You *DO* have to think your custom design through a bit. Sacrifice makes a rather lousy choice for hats and t-shirts (in fact, for just about everything save the coffee cups) because of its distinct LACK OF CONTRAST... and you're putting it on a white background to boot. Machine + Soul is also a poor choice but for a different reason: the photography and design is just plain terrible. :-) Same goes for Dream Corrosion... but not, fortunately, for Dark Light. :-) And on and on. I think the idea of "do-it-yourself memorabilia" is a nifty one, and regardless of how many others share that belief, I know I'm the only one on *MY* block with a Telekon mouse pad and I think it woulda been cheap at ten times the price. :-) Mooooooving along: Derek L: Hey guy, THANK YOU for the excellent Tour info in the last Numan Digest. I'll be writing for more info on the Numanoids Tour and passing that along to those on my list. That's a reminder, everyone: if you're CONSIDERING going to England next April to see Gary, email me. Paiement" Subject: Nash on CD To: BDahlvang@aol.com, numan@cs.uwp.edu In the last Numan Digest, BDahlvang@aol.com asked: >I see that Nash the Slash has something to do with a song or so on the >Dance/Tubeway Army cd that just came in the mail via Music Machine. I love >Nash and am looking for the CD of And You Thought You Were Normal. Anyone >have any info on that? It would mean a lot to me. Thanks! First let me tell you that Nash played violin on 3 tracks from the Dance album: Cry the Clock Said, You Are You Are, and Moral. Nash has also toured with Gary as opening act, and even showed up on stage with Gary a few times for violin solos. Such a solo can be seen on the MicroMusic videotape. Of particular interest for Nash fans is the Hammersmith Holocaust bootleg. It features Nash at the Hammersmith Odeon (London) on September 15, 1980, as the opening act for Gary's Teletour. This is a very limited edition released that was done by Nash himself (he recorded it, had it pressed, and took care of distributing it). It is to my knowledge the only vinyl bootleg of Nash. His album And You Thought You Were Normal as well as most of Nash's work is not available on CD format. As you can see from the discography (included below, which I have been compiling over the last few years), only the following items featuring Nash are available on CD: 1. FM Tonight featuring Nash on vocals, violin and mandolin. Certainly some of Nash's worst material, extremely commercial. Even Nash admits they went in the wrong direction with this album. This CD can only be found used, as it has long been deleted from stocks. It is an interesting release because the CD format contains almost half of FM's previous album, Con-Test, which was never released on CD. 2. Highway 61 soundtrack, which can only be obtained by ordering from Nash itself. The story for this one is... Nash was commissioned to write the movie soundtrack, and he did. When the final edit was done on the movie, Nash was shocked to see that only two pieces of his were used for the movie, the rest of the soundtrack being filled up by popular 70's hits. Nash then decided to himself release the entire work he did for this soundtrack. Note that you may find the official Highway 61 soundtrack in record stores, but it contains only one of Nash's tracks. If you really want this second CD, ask me and I will let you know how to get a copy, assuming there are still some left around. 3. FM Black Noise, featuring Nash on vocals, violins and mandolins. This is Nash's first released recording, and is a strong piece of progressive rock from what started out as a great Canadian rock band. This album was finally re-issued on CD about one year ago, and should be fairly easy to find in North America, although it may require a special order. Note that this re-issue was remastered from an orignal vinyl copy of the album because the original tapes could not be found. 4. Of course, any Numan material on CD featuring some of Nash's wild violin work. NOTE: I removed all track and release info from this discography to make it shorter for posting. I you are interested in the complete document, which also includes a little biography on FM and Nash the Slash, just ask me. My name is Stephen Austra-Beck. I'm an Austrian residing in the United States (in response to your interest of nationalities represented, Derek). I'd like to respond to David Leck's suggestion on 17. August to act as a middleman to compile and convert U.S. funding to Canadian and coordinate orders. I would also suggest to our friend Joey Lindstrom to consider compiling orders for the maker to run multiple issues as demanded rather than one by one. That will save you time and the dealer as well. Let me know if I can be of service. One personal comment, anyone who see's it fit to mention the name Trent Reznor in the same context of Gary Numan is commiting an incredible sin. Mr Reznor can't do anything original and is sadly overglorified when there are so many others about so much better than he. Forgive me, I have a profound distaste for NIN, and in my view have no place in mention with Gary. Thank you so much Derek for your work; and especially for your effort in convincing Numa to release BERSERKER; at long last! I can't wait! I'm hoping they see fit to re-release THE FURY and STRANGE CHARM as well eventually. Yes, "My Breathing" is excellent, but I'm so partial to "Call Out the Dogs" for some reason myself. Well, after using a graphics editor, I quickly cropped and converted a GIF of Gary's Telekon cover to reduce into the required business card size. It looks great! It's like a floating head (spooky ,eh?) As long as you have a BMP image which is about 1.5" by 3", it'll work fine.
