Finding Sacrifice, et al: A friend of mine owns a music store here in Portland, OR. He carries most of Numan's catalog including the 2 disc releases of Gary's older albums (back when they were called 'albums'), Sacrifice (extended), Here Am I and Dream Corrosion. The last time I was in the store, I noticed he also had a copy of White Noise and a lone copy of Exhibition. If I'm not mistaken again, Exhibition is also out of print. If people are interested, I can email/post his address. He said he'd be willing to ship discs as long as people were up front about paying their bills. Paiement" Subject: Berserker - Live in London videotapes To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Gary Numan) I finally took time this wekend to view both versions of the Berserker videotapes I own, and here are all the details, just so we can identify the differences. 1. GARY NUMAN - BERSERKER ------------------------- (This is an NTSC transfer of an original PAL release.) Released by 'The Video Collection' in the UK Copyright 1984 Trilion Pictures Ltd. Track Listing (according to tape box cover) We Are Glass / Berserker / Remind Me To Smile / Sister Surprise / Music For Chameleons / The Iceman Comes / Cold Warning / This Prison Moon / My Dying Machine / We Take Mystery (To Bed) / This Is New Love The actual videotape is only slightly different than this track listing. The introduction on the video includes some footage of setting up the stage, fans lines up waiting to enter the hall, Gary putting on makeup and answering questions. The actual track listing is as follows: Berserker / Remind Me To Smile / Sister Surprise / Music For Chameleons / The Iceman Comes / Cold Warning / This Prison Moon / My Dying Machine / We Take Mystery (To Bed) / This Is New Love [We Are Glass is absent from the tape!] 2. GARY NUMAN - BERSERKER ------------------------- (This is an original NTSC copy which I purchased NEW in Sept. 1990.) Released by Castle Hendrig. Cat. No. HEN 2 266 Copyright 1984 Trilion Pictures Ltd. 'Filmed and recorded at the Hammersmith Odeon London 11th Dec. 1984' Manufactured in the UK Track Listing (according to tape box cover) (same as other tape) We Are Glass / Berserker / Remind Me To Smile / Sister Surprise / Music For Chameleons / The Iceman Comes / Cold Warning / This Prison Moon / My Dying Machine / We Take Mystery (To Bed) / This Is New Love The actual videotape is somewhat different than this track listing. The introduction on the video includes a 2 minute Hendrig promo, followed by a little 'Live in London' song featuring some female singer which sounds alot like one of Gary's background vocals. The actual track listing is as follows: Berserker / Metal / Remind Me To Smile / The Iceman Comes / Cold Warning / Down In The Park / I Die : You Die / My Dying Machine / Cars / We Are Glass / This Is New Love --- Both videotapes features the same production and crew credits, and since it has the same copyright, was can assume they both come from the same raw footage, except that someone decided to include some later BB tracks in the UK release and some early BB tracks on the North American (or was this meant for Japan???) release. As well, both video refer to the recording as Live from London, and not Berserker. Only the tape box artwork mentioned Berserker. In an earlier post, I had mentioned a 2 hour Berserker version. I was obviously thinking of something else, as both videotapes are approximately one hour long. Sorry if I confused anyone. So, does anyone know why: 1. the tape content and the tape box description don't exactly match in both cases? 2. why would the actual track listing on the PAL and the NTSC version be different? And while we're at it, does anyone know of another version? Is there a videotape out there that's actually called Live in London on the tape box? It there a videotape that's actually called Berserker on the video? Richard ************************************************************** Richard V. It is likely that BB were approached by the rap artist and BB gave the OK. Gary may have been asked by BB as well if it was OK. What has Gary to lose? More exposure (the movie is #1 in the USA at the moment) and possibly even payment for its use. If it enables Gary to get more exposure Stateside and enables Gary to keep on making music then I'm all for it. Generally I dislike rap but the music in the TV ad for the movie has sounds quite interesting to me. Is that what you are referring to? Is it Gary's influence that is making me like it? I should go and see the movie. I'll likley just wait for the video. Don't worry. I feel I can state with 99.9% certainty that Gary is not getting vaught up in rap. Now at least the name "Rrussell" makes some kinda sense. I think I should try convincing my frien d Ross (whose name is Walter Ross Procter) to call himself Wross.... :-) Stephen Austra-Beck - first, in regards to mentioning Trent Reznor in the same li ght as Gary Numan... well, off the top I'll agree with you in terms of the mans music . I don't find it particularly appealing, original, or even MUSICAL. However, is production skills are top notch. And, in case you missed it, he has an upcoming cover of Gary's song "Metal" (from The Pleasure Principle) coming out. Second, regarding the do-it-yourself Numan merchandising, I like your idea of doi ng multiple runs on the same item, TO AN EXTENT. This won't work for T-shirts becau se the principal costs involved are: 1) The t-shirt 2) The transfer paper (their cost: $5 per sheet) One t-shirt uses up an entire sheet of transfer paper. We can likely arrange a b ulk discount for several shirts (they could be the same image or different images) bu t we wouldn't save much there. However, there's another area I can now save us som e cash: colour. Remember that $5 per item surcharge I mentioned? That only happen s cuz we gotta use their laser printer. But I've just purchased a Hewlett Packard Deskjet 540 colour printer which seems to do a GREAT job at printing these items out, meaning they're camera ready and thus easier to do. We *CAN* get the transfer-paper costs down for things like hats and keychains and whatnot because we (I) can print out an 8.5x11 sheet that contains SEVERAL copies of the images we want. That can then be duped to a single sheet of transfer paper, which can then be cut up and used a bit at a time (no wasted paper). All of this is moot if there's little or no demand, though. The "full retail pri ce" for most of these items is really quite reasonable. Including taxes (but not including shipping), I've managed to get the following items for my own personal collection for $63 in Canadian funds (about... hmm, something like $45US): 1) The "Telekon" mouse pad 2) A "Tubeway Army" baseball cap 3) A "The Fury" T-shirt 4) An "Isolate" keychain This isn't a high price to pay, considering you literally get to have this stuff made to order. In fact, if you'd like to custom-edit your own image ahead of tim e, and transmit the .JPG of it to me, I can have *THAT* made into a T-shirt or mug o r what-have-you as well. There's really no limit. Sure, it could be pricy if you wanted a full set of Numan coffee mugs (one per studio album = 15 mugs at somethi ng like $18 per mug, could get expensive quickly). But who wants a full set of 'em? Really, unless we could somehow drum up some SIGNIFICANT demand, there's really n ot a WHOLE lot we can do to whittle down the prices more than a few percentage point s. And my idea of simply phoning orders into them ain't gonna fly if I've gotta prin t out all the colour images anyways (grin!). In short, this is something that "tru e fans" should be seriously considering, but it's not something for the impulse buy er. Hell, if Numa Records (or the fan club) were selling this stuff at twice the pric e, we'd be LINING UP TO BUY IT, so let's not quibble too much about their pricing, which is quite low already. //----------------------------------------------------------------- // lindstrj@cadvision.com aka Joey Lindstrom // If you're mindless, please take mine // Numanoids On Tour '96 - Email me for details ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 25 Aug 1995 15:13:35 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Response to call for more rereleases To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #150 lindstrj@cadvision.com aka Joey Lindstrom said: >Folks, we're all dying for a re-release of "Berserker" - but now that >we've almost got that one, let's all push for a re-release of "Strange >Charm"... this is really a very fine album (with the huge exception of >"I Can't Stop", which is this album's answer to "Emotion" - ick!)... >although by now you're all tired of my telling you that "My Breathing" >is Gary's greatest song of all time. ;-) Please, let's give Numa some time before we start hounding them again for more CD rereleases :-) The "Babylon" series is dribbling out, "Berserker" is in process and should appear soon, "Human" - music from "The Unborn" Soundtrack sessions should arrive in October and maybe even the unplugged or ballad album later this year but I suspect they have been held back due to all this other activity. I know Numa have been wanting to reissue SC and TF since the label was reformed in 1991 and I am sure they will get around to it. I would really prefer to give them a bit of time to catch their breaths. Does next year fit everyone's time frame. Whenever I have mentioned TF to Beryl she agrees that the extended mixes should be used for the rerelease giving us all something "new" to buy. An SC rerelease I hope would contain "Time to Die" and maybe some of the single versions or extended mixes of the singles to again give us all something new to buy. Meanwhile let's give them time to catch up. I don't want to have Beryl, Tony and Gary pushed too hard by the Digest subscribers, especially as we are just about to have Gary take part in the Digest. Does "killing the bird that lays the golden egg" ring any bells? :-) "My Breathing" took my breath away when I first heard it after getting the CD. IMO the album is a bit patchy but I aggree about "I Can't Stop". "The Need" is also up there among what I feel are Gary's less accomplished pieces. Having said that, I want to hear why the rest of you hate this song (and the rest of the album) so much. Educate me! -A.J. P.S. I was watching some dumb movie the other day, and in one scene some guy was talking to a woman who asked him, "Do you like metal?" The guy replied, "Only if it's heavy." So they went off to some "heavy metal" club, and guess what song was playing as they walked in? New Anger! I couldn't stop laughing for 10 minutes... ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 30 Aug 1995 21:28:38 -0500 From: David Datta Subject: Quick note To: numan I am just now installing the uploaded lyrics and someone uploaded sacrifice, and some other files so I thought it may be a good time to mention that almost all of Gary's lyrics are available in the archive. To access the lyrics at ftp.uwp.edu: % ftp ftp.uwp.edu use "anonymous" as your user/account name use your complete e-mail address as your password (@ and all) ftp> cd numan.gary/lyrics ftp> get song.or.album.name You can use the "dir" command to get a list of the files there. If you get an error about local filenames, it means that your system cannot handle the long filenames. Shorten the filename on the get command. For example the command ftp> get i.assassin assassin will get the file and rename it to "assassin" on your machine. Some notes about file names for the lyrics, the machine here is case sensitive, the file 'Index' is different from the file 'INDEX' or 'index'. -Dave P.S. If you have problems, please mail me directly at datta@cs.uwp.edu, not the list. Gary wanted to film the Hammersmith concert - as he was recording the music to be released. This would have been the same as Dream Corrosion. However, no cameras were available that night and so no official video was made of this or any other Sacrifice performance. I believe there might have been some back stage camcorder stuff for a possible Fan Club video release. There are several bootleg videos of various parts of the Sacrfice tour. Howeer, the Fan Club has come down on people selling these. The chap I know who was selling one is no longer so. Also in #152, Ralph Milam asked about a CD of Automatic. I'm still trying to get a copy - but I know that the catalogue number is 839-520-2. I removed this question and answer from the transcript of the session (all typos are the big man's, not mine): Tiberius4 : Who were your main influences when you were getting started? S MixALot : Parliment, george clinton. more so bootsy collins that's my dream to be the bootsy of the 90's. other ones are Kraftwork, gary numan, any one doing weired sounds. I don't want to sound like anybody else. Obviously James Brown too. So it seems Sir-what's-it was influenced by Numan after all. Interesting. Which they use "Cars" as their theme music when coming out of commecrials. The host started talking about Numan and proceeded to play the Cars video. Unfortuantely my vcr was not ready so I was unable to record this "event". The host basicly said the same as the MTV show did, that he is still making music but that he is also doing flying too. Now my question is how many and what songs did Numan make into videos? The last one I remember is on off of the Warriors album. Also this past weekend, while driving around St. Louis. I spotted the following plate [ INCARS ] on a car going the other way. Does anyone on the digest have this plate, the car is from Missouri. I'm going to try and get a personalized plate with NUMA on it if possible. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu I thought it might be a bit of a laugh to search the Internet for any Numan references. Expecting not to find any, this site popped up. A few down loaded files later and it seems that there's quite a healthy Numan following on the Internet. Anyhow, "hi" and all that. It's Monday. It's a Bank Holiday. I'm at work and a little bored. So I thought I'd send whoever runs this a quick mail so I can find out more about this Numan gathering. I am a Numan fan (of course) and I'd be very interested in getting in touch with other Numanoids around the world. My email address is sean.francis@ps.net. This might not work as I've have trouble with this addressing recently. Alternatively try sean.francis@psemail.ps.net or 100557.3713@compuserve.com. Turn off the lights Turn off the sound !
