In #153 the result was that the previous Digest (#152) was included in its entirity. In addition to possibly filling the Digest up with old info and wasting bandwidth, a subject line of "Gary Numan Digest vol 1 #152" does not tell us much about the content of the post. The Digest has a table of contents at the beginning so that readers can assess the urgency with which they read the Digest. It also helps in locating particular information if going through back issues. So please, take the time to create a new email and subject line that accurately describes the content of your posts rather than just hitting the "reply" key or key combination or clicking on the "reply" box or menu item. "The Digest asks Gary" (or whatever I decide to call it) ---------------------- I sent the first batch of questions to Gary earlier this week (sorry Jim, your question will be in next month's) and wait eagerly for Gary's answers. I'll post them as soon as I receive them. Could questioners please add some personal information about themselves after their questions. Namely: real name, city/town, state/province/county, country e.g. John Doe, Anytown, Anystate, USA Fred Bloggs, Anytown, Anyshire, UK Please adjust things to your situation/country. The idea is to let Gary see who is asking the questions and where they are coming from. I'd like Gary to see the Internet is a great way for him to reach fans from far away places. Changing address etc. --------------------- Despite trying every means possible to make people remember that any changes to their subscription address should be emailed to numan-request@cs.uwp.edu I still see subscribe/unsubscribe messages in the Digest. I suspect they cannot all be eliminated. I email those who post to the Digest to tell them where they need to send their request. Remember: numan@cs.uwp.edu is for posting messages to the Digest that everyone else will read. The controller of the subscription list does not always read the Digest so action on the request is not guaranteed. numan-request@cs.uwp.edu is for making any changes to your subscription, to be added or removed. This account was purposely for Dave Datta to receive requests to change subscription info. He does not monitor the Digest articles as they come in to numan@cs.uwp.edu Any other questions can be directed to me at dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Numan Archives -------------- All back issues of the Digest are available via anonymous ftp from cs.uwp.edu but you might find it easier to get into the mirror site at aol i.e. mirrors.aol.com which has everything the cs.uwp.edu site has including the discography, lyrics and even some pictures. Gary needs help with creating a WWW page ---------------------------------------- Gary is trying to master HTML but does not know how he would go about making a home page available over the WWW. I am not too hot in this area so if anyone can help out with some guidance please email me and I can ask you specifically what information Gary needs. Thanks, That's all for now. I managed to get my copy more than two years ago via a net contact in the UK. Virgin in Glasgow had two few copies in their sale bins for around #5. I snapped them up for a friend and myself. I have never seen one since. Your best bets are: 1. keep your eyes open in used stores 2. place an entry in the Wanted CD list that gets posted to rec.music.cd, rec.music.music and rec.music.marketplace each week along with instructions on how to do it. I would also add that it is a very nice gensture of fellow fandom to make it known if you see copies of rare Numan items in used stores. I invariably buy or put on hold Numan import CDs I find in used stores as there is always a buyer in the group especailly when I charge only cost plus p&p. Unfortunately my visits to used stores ahve been rare this past 6 months and when I have gone I have found nothing. Notable points include: - They are not that late! - The Fear and Puppets are labelled "'95 remix". - A new song called Tribal is included. This is an unreleased version of Call Out The Dogs. - The very excellent Shame is also included. - Mistasax 2 (previously unreleased) is also there. Enjoy. Matthew Holbrook ------------------------------ Date: 02 Sep 95 09:22:59 EDT From: Subject: Babylon errors To: I've just been enjoying Babylon 3 and 4 and I think I've spotted a couple of errors. There is no credit for Nick Beggs having co-written Shame on Babylon 3 (Nick was from 80s pop group Kajagoogoo). Secondly, Mistasax 2 on Babylon 4 is said to be unreleased. However, this was on the B side of the blue cover Radio Heart 12" in 1987. This has been mixed up with Mistasax 1 - which was included on Babylon 2 and credited as being a 12" B side from 1987! Oh dear. The latest version is available through ftp ftp.uwp.edu and is dated at the top with "As of August 26, 1995". If anyone has additions or corrections to our discography, please e-mail them to me directly at mtolva@eagle.ibc.edu - when sending additions or corrections to the discography, like David Datta, I prefer you sending them to me in the same or similar format as the discography itself. One last note, please don't send me any bootleg materials as I won't publish those to the discography. There's too many boots out on Gary to list as it is anyway, but it goes against my "principles" to publish them firstly. The August 26, 1995 version of the discography has many corrections I've received from members already. Thanks to everyone who contributed to the latest version which takes us through the Dark Light material. If anyone has release dates or track times that are missing from the discography, forward those onto me too. Be aware, if you plan on downloading a copy or printing it for yourself, the discography is approximatly 115K and close to 90 printed pages, but IMO it's worth it for having a hopefully complete discography. Nice to hear that Gary is planning to participate in some way with us... electric friends indeed :-) T-shirt idea sounds cool. I'll keep reading untill I hear something definitive, but YES I WANT ONE, probably two or three. My idea for a t-shirt design? Glad you asked (you didn't but I gonna tell you anyway :-) Black shirt with the First Album symbol on the front (same as NUMA logo). On the back put our email address. Anyone who cares will ask about us and the very idea sounds neat. Well maybe ... License plates - I've had my heart set on "TELEKON" since before Washington state allowed seven letter plates- so if any of you other Washington State Numan fans out there want it - better hurry. If I can't get that one NU-CAR will have to do... Maybe MYCRSLDS for those of you in states with 8 letters (California, etc.) If you were really morbid you could put IDI UDI or CRTDRVR (Crash the driver) Of course putting THE FURY on a pontiac Fury would be redundant... How about a really obscure one: TBWYARMY Hey that one is pretty good, maybe I'll use it.... HAMMOND" Subject: NAGNFC - July 1995 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Greetings! I just received my July fanzine from the North American Gary Numan Fan Club. It was almost a month late, but at least it arrived. Sadly, there was no great new information to pass on. It did contain information pertaining to the 6th Annual Gary Numan North American Fan Club Convention. I sincerely doubt that this convention is for just club member (the more the merrier!) although, if you plan on attending, you might want to call Jim Napier - who runs the club - and let him know who you are and of your intention of going. I personally have never gone to one of these events, but I've been told by past attendees that they are a pretty good time. Anyway, the necessarry information: What: The 6th Annual Gary Numan North American Fan Club Convention Where: Ithaca, N.Y. in Jim Napier's backyard When: 21 Ocotber 1995, starting at 2:00pm Who: Call Jim Napier (607) - 273 - 7909 for more directions and details. Why: Because it's fun. Other Fun Facts: Festivities will include free refreshments and pizzas. There will be many Numan videos shown and audio played. A raffle will be held along with prizes for "Best-Dressed," and "Best Lip-Synching." Tents and sleeping bags are recommended should you desire to camp out in his backyard rather than spend the night in a motel. If anyone here does end up attending, a review for the Digest would be great. Me! I thought there had been a major screw-up. The intro before Shame sounds just like the intro preceding . . . Outland. It's exactly the same. Just as I expected Outland to appear, Shame started. Matthew ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Sep 1995 21:16:09 -0400 From: Dangerimp@aol.com Subject: Tshirts To: numan@cs.uwp.edu i have been a silent member of the digest for quite some time, and i finally have something to add. i believe it was > lindstrj@cadvision.com < ...could be wrong... who has been offering advertising specialty items to the digest members (e.g. keychains, mousepads, etc.). whereas i think this is a WONDERFUL idea, i feel compelled to share some knowledge. contrary to what LINDSTRJ feels, the technology to which he is referring (generally, "heat transfers") is pretty POOR looking stuff (regardless of the substrate; ceramic, cotton, what have you...). heat transfers are usually considered acceptable ONLY as a comp for the client. not something with any guarantee or longevity! for the record, i have a small design studio in boston (impx graphic studios), and i find myself sourcing out such materials all the time. BUT WAIT! i didn't post, simply to be an arrogant shit (really!)! i'm prepared to make an offer. whereas i DON'T want to get into items such as keychains, mugs et al., i DO have a screenprinting shop that is quite capable of the producing high-end screenprinted Tshirts. the print shop is owned and operated by good friends. together, we have created killer shirts for MACMILLAN PUBLISHING, MICROSOFT, AND WBCN (a local radio station). DEREK is the one who really prompted me to post this offer, when he added the following: >> "I think it would be "cool" to give ourselves an identifying piece of clothing. One thought I had was putting a colour printing of either "Replicas" or TPP on the front and then: Are 'Friends' Electric? "Numanews" The Gary Numan Digest (numan@cs.uwp.edu) on back. Surely out of I assume over 260 subscribers we could get 50 orders. If rec.music.gaffa can do it for Kate Bush why can't we? We have the technology!" << yes, derek, we DO have the technology. and my offer is this: if 72 of our 260 (wow! really?) numanews subscribers email me with a VERBAL PROMISE to purchase one (or more shirts), i will do everything necessary to executing such an order... this would include agreement on the text and image used, number of colors, color of shirt, creation of artwork and separations, well.... you get the idea. most importantly, if i get the requisite 72 orders, i can make them AFFORDABLE for everyone! YEAH!! i do this all the time, anyway, and HELL! i've learned so much about gary from you all, that i think everyone deserves it! my immediate suggestion, would be a BLACK shirt, with the cover art from SACRIFICE (only difference being that i would probably vignette the side of gary's face, to avoid a harsh line), with our digest net ad on the back, as per derek's suggestion). so, by all means, HAVE THOSE MOUSEPADS MADE (just don't be disappointed if the quality isn't "all that.")! my netad is: Dangerimp@AOL.com email mail me DIRECTLY (not to the digest), with a note in the subject line saying "i want [X number] of gary shirts" if you're interested. there is no time limit, folks. i'm not going anywhere. give it some thought. if there is a legitimate interest in a WAYYYYYY COOL gary shirt, i will make it so. imp out. ------------------------------ Date: 02 Sep 95 03:23:49 EDT From: Subject: UK Numan Web Site - NU-Zone To: Hello everyone, I'm please to say that my Numan Web Site (NU-Zone) is now open for business. You can catch it at: http://www.county.net/machman/numan.html The site is still in its early stages and it is set to grow rapidly over the coming months. The following services are offered initially: - An introduction. - A UK singles discography. - A UK album discography (with shots of all studio albums). - A complete tour listing. - The start of a biography (1978-1980). - A miscellaneous page (details about me, the fan club and links to other sites). The things I am working on now include: - Later years of the biography. - A complete songs database - sorted by title and record. - A feature on Numan-linked bands - starting with GN2. - A news page. - Some form of advertising for Numan events. I expect this to grow into a major site. All comments are welcome - there is a facility for contacting me at the bottom of each page. There are a few problems that I will be correcting. A couple of errors of fact seemed to have slipped through. For some reason I thought the B side of S-G-C was Noise Noise. Not so. Also, graphics with a large B&W content have been corrupted (the system administrator converted them to interlaced GIFs). A couple of the images are slightly too large and I am looking at reducing them. The server holding the pages is also quite busy and performance can suffer. I find early on Saturday morning UK time the best time to get in! I will mail the digest each time I add something major to the site.
