To: "Gary Numan - Digest" Hello fellow Numanoids, My name is Deana (Deena) I've been a member of the digest since vol #128. Sorry it took so long to introduce myself to all of you. Well let's see, I've been a fan of Gary Numan since February 16, 1980. I saw his performance on Saturday Nite Live, and was hooked. Over the years I have collected his music and enjoyed everything he has put out. My music collection is mostly vinyl, I do have some CD's, and I am working on building up my CD's. For a while Numan music was very hard to find, but now that it's easier to order I'll get cracking! It's nice to know that there are still devoted fans out there, for a while I thought I was the only one. I had the absolute pleasure of going to see Gary here in Chicago on November 8, 1982, during the I' ASSASSIN tour. He gave a wonderful show at the Park West. I had a front row seat which was right next to the stage. Anyway I ended up shaking his hand. After the show I saw Gary drink what was left of his (Coke) and throw it behind Chris Slade's drum kit. I voiced to my boyfriend how much I would like to have that Coke can. To make a long story short, I have the can in my possession! I am 30 years old now, and Gary means as much to me now, as he did then. His music has never ceased to amaze me. I have other things in my collection as well, such as various buttons, three posters, concert pics, three mini bubblegum albums of Telekon (does anyone else have any of these?) I also have T-shirts, and lots of magazine articles. I do have two books on him also, one is Electric Shadows Vol#1, and the other one is Gary Numan by computer. I had another book that was called Gary Numan The authorized Biography by Ray Coleman. I was foolish and gave the book to a friend and we have lost touch. I have been searching for this book for 12 years, PLEASE... can anyone help me find it, or would someone be willing to sell theirs? Help! well, ttfn. -Deana. P.S how about if we ask Gary to come up with some name ideas for the Digest T- Shirts? P.P.S where is Donald Pedder? Are u still out there ? P.P.P.S. This WILL become a very interesting and important part of the Digest. I do have one question which should best be answered by some Digest subscriber, if anyone has an answer, because it might be a little insulting to Gary... Why does the British press refer to Gary as Gazza? Is this some slang term popular in the UK? I am not familiar at all with this word, and have no idea what it might refer to. My info- Glen Sutton 28 y/o Artist Relations Dir. for Zendrum Corporation. (Midi Instrument manufacturer) . I became a Gary Numan fan back in 1981 when I bought Telekon in a cut out rack in a grocery store in Florida. My turntable had no needle so I had to wait a week before I could hear it. I bought it because i was a new waver and it looked very new wave. Before then, I had never heard of Gary Numan. I rarely listened to radio and I doubt he was played that much in my area anyway. When I finally got to hear it I was totaly amazed! My favorite tune was Please Push No More. I love the wobbly synth part that always reminded me of crying puppies. I was so moved by his music. I had never experienced that since first hearing Pink Floyd's Umaguma(spelling?) album. From that day on I was a devout Gary Numan fan. Over the years I have tried to collect as much of his recordings as I could. In my enthusiasm and search for things Numan, I turned a few friends onto his music. I had every album from the Beggars Banquet era, some singles 7 and 12 inch, Sharpe and Numan stuff and the collections, some live albums etc. It was a large collection and my most favorite. Unfortunately, I came upon very hard times a few years ago, and had to sell my entire collection out of desperation. It was a very emotional decision for me. But I had to eat and pay the rent. Things are slowing turming around, and I am beginning to reconstruct nearly 13 years of collecting. I am a synthesist and sound designer who was directly influenced by Gary Numan. My very first synthesizer was a PolyMoog. I head read in the Telekon sleeve the boards he used and found thie polymoog for about 125 dollars and paid nearly 250 to fix it up. Later it was nearly destroyed by some wayward children who were being babysat by my mother when I lived at home. AAARRRGGG! Now I own a Peavey DPM3se, Korg Polysix, Arp Oddysey, Moog Prodigy, Akai X7000, and A K2500. My music varies now, but I always love that early '80's synth sounds that Gary new so well. I had the pleasure to correspond with him when I was designing sounds freelance for the Peavey DPm3se. He was very generous in his help, although he told me he never thought any one would ever really care (about his synth sounds). Message to Gary: There are alot who care and who wouldn't have discovered them without you. Thank you! I am looking forward to seeing Gary Numan one day on tour. For several years now, I've had MACHMAN on my car as I've been influenced much by the Replicas LP and the whole persona of Gary as the Machman from that period. For people who don't know who Gary Numan is, I tell them my plates refer to my profession as a computer programmer or "machine-man" or Machman. It usually takes them awhile to figure that one out, but I only tell my closest of friends that I am a Gary Numan fanatic. It would take too long to explain otherwise. I was watching Micromusic last night and the person who wanted to "look for" Gary's lyrics mistakes would have a field day especially with those versions of "Metal" and "She's got claws" because what Gary sang is totally different that the album lyrics. I realise Dance was just coming out at the time and Gary was probably a little nervous his last nights at Wembley. Despite that, I think Micromusic is a fabulous video and probably doesn't do the nights at Wembley justice for the spectical that it was. Wish I was there... In case no one else uploads the details, here is a summary: - The Human CD will be released late October/early November on CD (NUMACD 1013) and Cassette (NUMAC 1013). It will be 62 minutes long and contains 36 tracks. It will be made up of music not used on The Unborn film. - A band called Techno Army are re-recording 12 of Gary's past hits - with Gary doing the vocals. This album will be coming out on Castle Communications (like the old Gary Numan Collection). - The next Numan album is due out in February and is currently called Exile. - Berserker will be out again on general release CD within the next month. I guess Pinnacle are distributing it. - Gary is filming a video about the Spitfire - but it's not his own project. - Bristol, Cambridge, Ipswitch, Newcastle, Glasgow, Liverpool and Nottingham have been added to the next tour. I will be incorporating most of these items into the NU-Zone web site. I'll mail the digest again when the pages have gone in. I received info from the fan club today..hope no-one has already posted it..any way here goes.. Record Release News 'HUMAN' An instrumental album called 'HUMAN' will be released by Numa Records sometime in late October or early Novemeber. The album will be on CD and cassette only and features over 62 minutes of music written by Gary Numan and Michael R Smith. 'HUMAN' is compiled from music written for the film 'The Unborn' but unused. Some of the bits and pieces have since found their way into more recent Numan Songs but the majority of the material will be new to you. The album has 36 tracks on it although manay of them are quite short, one or two are less than a minute for example. As Gary explains on the sleeve notes 'HUMAN' is not a conventional instrumental album but more of a collection of musical ideas, each with a specific mood or atmosphere in mind. The catalogue number for 'HUMAN' will be : NUMAC 1013 for the cassette and NUMACD 1013 for the CD. 'TECHNO ARMY' A musical team called 'Techno Army' are recording 12 Gary Numan songs for release on an album later this year. The tracks will be reworked in a more dancey style compared to Gary's originals. Gary's involvement is fairly minimal but he will be singing all the vocals afresh. The 12 tracks are to be taken from the various stages of Gary's career but already included are 'Are Friends Electric ?', 'We are Glass' and Cars. The album will be released by Castle Communications but no catalogue has been assigned at present. LATE NEWS The working title for Gary's next studio album, due for release in Febuary '96 is 'EXILE'. Don't bank on it being called that at the end of the day as he has a habit of changing his mind about song and album titles at the last minute. The album 'BERSERKER' is about to be re-released on CD. This album is available in music shops within the next month or so. If you want to listen to Gary's rough working demo's of the new 'EXILE' album you can call the 'NU-MUSIC LINE' on 0891-600-545. Each month Gary puts on, usually anyway, two tracks. Please bear in mind that these are rough demo's put out on the phone line to give you a basic idea of how the album is progressing. Sometimes they have guide vocals only, sometimes it's only the music, but they are always very interesting. Other Numan phone lines are the monthly update line on 0891-600-544 and the monthly interview line on 0891-600-565. Gary will shortly be having an interview with Sound on Sound magazine. Gary is to film a video about the Spitfire fighter which is expected to be released at the end of the year or early next. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Numanews Mailing List) Hey there hi there ho there everyone, it's me again, fixing a mangled email message I sent to the last Numanews and answering a quick question from another Numanoid, whilst cleverly slipping in a bit of Music-tech trivia about Himself.... First the question-- >Date: 4 Sep 95 09:44:00 +0100 >From: Sean.Francis@psemail.ps.net >Subject: Outland's Not Bad (Pt. 2) >To: numan@cs.uwp.edu > > I must agree with A.J. regards "Outland". It's really not that bad ! Wellll, I admit to really liking "Dream Killers", "Heart" and "From Russia Infected", but three songs out of a whole album is an all-time Numan low for me. I think _Sacrifice_ is on a much better track, requiring only a bit more attention to the drum loops to be completely killer. > What's all this 'Janet Jackson rip off' stuff about then ? I've not > listened to her "Rhythm Nation" album myself. Are the rhythms on > Outland really that close to hers ? Whilst on about rip offs, I seem > to recall JJ releasing a single called "The Pleasure Principle". Nuff > said. You can't copyright titles. The overlap is in the format of the album and in a couple of the songs themselves; I pointed this out to Derek originally and IMO it has become sort of his 'touchstone' for why he puts _Outland_ at the bottom of his personal list. I should point out that the parallels may not be deliberate on Gary's part-- there's a famous copyright case where George Harrison was proven to have unconsciously lifted the melody line for "My Sweet Lord" from a copy of "He's So Fine" on a record changer at a party he'd been attending. You can really reach and claim that the whole organization of _Outland_ is a mirror of _Rhythm Nation 1814_, with the "Intervals" replacing the "Interludes" on the Jackson album and the samples from the movies used identically to the snips of television and radio on the Jackson disc, but that's pushing it. The really hard-to-excuse stuff is in the song "Soul Protection," which if compared to the title track "Rhythm Nation" on the JJ album is almost embarrassingly similar: identical phrasing, only a few altered chords, vocal call-and-response, and wide similarities in the lyrics themselves, masked by the fact that you have to compare the verses of one song to the chorus of the other: Johnny's got a job People of the world Spreading the cure Today, are we looking Self employed, he's a For a better way, of One-man crusade Life--SING! {We want to give you your {We are a part of the Soul Protection} Rhythm Nation} I think that it's probably reaching a bit to stretch this one fairly blatant slip into calling all of _Outland_ a ripoff of the Jackson album, but listening to them back to back really is an eye opener. I'm a bit more forgiving of Gary now than I was then, having studied a lot about copyright issues in preparation to release my own music. The above could have easily come from him hearing the song on the radio or in a store, and having a bit of the structure stick in his mind well enough to prod him into writing a tune; not exactly cause for a blanket condemnation of the album, much less the artist himself. My own gripe about _Outland_ is that it was, in comparison to the records that came, say, two before it (_Strange Charm_) and two after it (_Sacrifice_), a sloppy and uninspired effort. Gary really does best when he writes for his own muse, rather than trying to satisfy the higher-ups at major labels. This may limit how far he goes these days in the major markets, but better good music than famous music. To quote Sean, 'nuff said. Topic #2-- the latest Numan digest had the unfortunate one-liner from me: >Date: Mon, 4 Sep 1995 16:00:02 -0700 (PDT) >From: atomic@netcom.com (Mike Metlay ++ Atomic City) >Subject: still trying.... >To: numan@cs.uwp.edu (Numanews Mailing List) > >13 tracks. Anyone? Anyone? Bueller? Anyone? Needless to say, unless you have been closely following my trials and tribulations here with some degree of sympathy (hi, Ziggy), this message is meaningless, so let me try again: I still have had no luck finding a copy of _Machine+Soul Extended_ that actually has all 13 tracks on it (I have the one with only 9 tracks), and am still searching desperately for a copy....anyone able to help me? BTW, I still have a copy of the _Dream Corrosion_ CD EP for sale, make me an offer. Final bit of Numan trivia: This year, KEYBOARD magazine is celebrating its 20th year of providing a major trade vehicle for synthesists, pianists, organists, and so forth, in all styles and from all points on the globe. It's worth noting that in the past, Gary's albums have received good reviews (when KEYBOARD knew of their existence at all; they still think that _New Anger_ and _Outland_ are all he's done recently). However, he got slammed big-time in the latest issue of the magazine (still on stands, cover story about nearfield monitors) in a 20-year retrospective article called "20 Sounds That Must DIE!" about synth cliches and overused sound effects. I doubt many of the magazine's readers will agree with the prioritization of the sounds mentioned on the list (although everyone will agree with most of them, like the Emulator shakuhachi sound that starts off Peter Gabriel's "Sledgehammer" and makes up most of the first Enigma album); the reviewers seemed largely interested in picking apart the famous cliches on the Roland D-50, a synth that Gary used almost exclusively in making _Metal Rhythm_ and _New Anger_. As a result, Gary was far and away the nost-named cliche offender on the list, showing up in three out of the twenty top slots for songs like "Cold Metal Rhythm" and "Devious" which reek of D-50 sounds like Fantasia and DigitalNativeDance. For a readership that thinks of Gary rarely or not at all, this is hardly an inspiring reminder...oh for the days of the Wave Team.... I plan to write a letter to KEYBOARD protesting the omission of the Korg Wavestation and its instantly recognizable wavesequencer, but I won't mention Gary if I can help it. After all, _Outland_ and later albums are equal or worse offenders where that beast was concerned! :) shame on me, mike -- 'ambient techno' is an oxymoron =========================================================================== Mike Metlay ~ ATOMIC CITY ~ P. Having said that, I >want to hear why the rest of you hate this song (and the rest of the >album) so much. Educate me! Hate is too strong a word for me. But it certainly is not one that I regularly put on the CD player. I have often been quite critical of the album as a whole but it does have a few bright spots. I am not sure what FRI is about but it sounds a little insulting, a crass criticism of Russian society as the Soviet Union dissolved. I may be way off base but it just seems unbecoming. What concerns me with this album is that it took Gary in a direction I personally did not like. To me the album is too derivative of a lot of dance music that was around at the time, the percussion in particular. Combined with the wailing female backing vox which had quickly grown tiresome by the third song on "The Fury" the album just didn't do a whole lot for me. As Gary has said himself, it lacked Numaness. It was competant and perhaps enjoyable on some plain but I like Gary's music for certain things and "Outland" did not meet meet my needs. "Outland" was so mainstream and uneventful IMO. A few tracks stood out : "Dream Killer", "Heart" and "Whisper" (the ballads). M&S was a move in the right direction but a few tracks were far below par (Generator, Poison, U Got the Look) and it did not have songs that impressed me as much as some of his earlier work. "I Wonder" and "Cry" came close. In #155 Sean.Francis@psemail.ps.net said > I must agree with A.J. regards "Outland". Track down a copy of JJ's "Rhythm Nation 1814". Look at the song layout. Now listen to the title track. Ring any bells? This and "Soul Protection" are uncannily similar. When the album appeared many commented it was Gary goes Prince and JJ and then of course Gary covered two Prince songs with the M&S releases. I don't know if JJ's TPP has anything to do with Gary's. Maybe they cottoned on to the same literary reference. SECONDLY, i made a suggestion in my initial offering, to recreate the SACRIFICE album cover on our shirt. one person mentioned that they liked this idea, but *several* people stated that the tubeway army/numa face logo would be the way to go. i must admit, i think they are right, for the following reasons: * that logo is quite simple, yet compelling and would look very dramatic on a Tshirt, whether black-on-white (like the album) or white-on-black (a reverse of the album). * this would make our shirt a one-color, two-location image, as opposed to the SACRIFICE image, which would be a two-color, two-location image. what this means, is that the price point would be lower---less expensive to everyone. * if this is successful, and everyone is happy with the product and fulfillment, there is no reason why we couldn't do other shirts later, with different, perhaps more complex artwork. this shirt is a no-brainer for me, and would allow me to gain everyone's confidence that i'm not some scumbag who can't make good on his claims! anyway, it really DOESN'T matter what we do, i just thought i would open up the forum for discussion. BTW, if this turns into a big mess of arguments and differing opinions, DEREK, DAVID DATTA and IMP (me!) will act as official decision makers for the sake of simplicity. i hope that's cool with y'all. i'm very excited about the possibilities: i've never actually SEEN a gary numan shirt (or anything else for that matter, save buttons), so this will be quite fun [and functional]. any questions, or orders should be addressed to: Dangerimp@AOL.com (yes, AOL sucks) imp out. ------------------------------ Date: 07 Sep 95 17:07:33 EDT From: Subject: Vinyl Isolate / Outland not that bad (3) To: In #155, Edward Carmack asked about a vinyl copy of Isolate. I don't think there ever was one. Isolate was an extended mixes album and so would not have fitted on to a single CD. I guess it is the same idea as M&S Extended and Sacrifice Extended Mixes - both of which were only available on CD. Also in this Digest, Sean Francis was talking about Outland not being as bad as some have made out. When I first got Outland I hated it. As time went on, some of the tracks grew on me. I tend to get to like songs after I have heard them live (Dream Killer, Outland and My World Storm on Dream Corrosion). I also get to like songs when I see the reaction to them at Numan discos. Although terrible Numan anthems, Soul Protection and From Russia Infected always fill the dance floors. Then again, so does Machine and Soul... But, maybe someone else has had some luck in >places I have not tried...... Massy Despite "Outland" being out of print it is usually still quite findable as a used CD. Finding an import might be very hard but the domestic is still around. It unfortunately found its way into used stores in great numbers soon after release, some as cut-outs. With the whole of LA to check out just look around and you'll surely find a used copy. New copies will be rare though as stock rarely is left to gather dust on shelves. Email me if you turn up blank. I'm sure I can find one down here in your weekend getaway town - San Diego :-). Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi. I can't recall if the Japanese release Asylum was out of print, but I did see a copy at a store in Toronto, Canada. Can't remember the price, but it was good (about $80) considering imports from out there is about $60 for a single CD. -------------- omega@io.org small sig, eh? -------------- ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 8 Sep 1995 21:28:46 -0400 (EDT) From: Glen Sutton Subject: Zendrum To: numan@cs.uwp.edu 9-8-95 To whome ever recieves this...... I am Glen Sutton, Artist Relations for Zendrum Corp. We are interested in contacting Gary to invite him to endorse the Zendrum Midi drum and percussion controller. It would be ideal for his small studio and on tour as well. People like Peter Gabriel, Mark Mothersbaugh, Gerald Casale, Mick Fleetwood, Andy Summers and many more are representing us here in the states. But no in in the UK so far. As an admirer of his work, style, and contribution to electronic music, I believe he would be ideal for the Zendrum. Please respond ASAP with a means to contact him. So far i have written and faxed, but no response as yet. The endorsement would include a Zendrum for his use (no cost) and addition to our US and European Advertising.
