It makes it all worthwhile. I'm working at an exhibition at Earl's Court in London over the next week. As I can't afford the fee for the data connector for my mobile phone, I won't be reading any e-mail during this period! Please bear with me. Gary has now visited NU-Zone and likes it a lot. I'm due to visit him in early October to talk about NU-Zone and his own web site. I'll keep you posted as to how that goes. Matthew Holbrook P.S. Is it still available in Japan? Intro: Hi, I'm Kevin DuArte in 77 i fell in love with the syth while hearing the John Williams score for "Close Encounters", Then in 79 I heard "Cars" on the radio and it seemed to put all of my fetishes together: technology, psychology, sci-fi, and music. The images and music of Telekon furthered that synthesis in 80. Boy, I wanted to play a synth but my family said they couldn't afford one and no one I knew had access to one. I did not get to begin working with them until college. I stumbled into the wrong class (a synth class) and was told to leave! Anyhow, during the early 80's my love of the syth was kept alive each year by the next Gary Numan project and I thank him greatly for his hard work. In the late 80's it appeared that he had no exposure so I formed a Fan Club of about 70 people, largly in the San Francisco Bay Area. We made requests to radio stations (Thank you Live 105, KFJC!) making flyers (I worked at a newspaper and no one noticed) for all the record stores, and talked with the owners and workers about Gary's current projects. I found everyone always receptive and to a large amount nostalgic about the Beggars Banquit work. They were glad to hear that he was still making albums. Stations were glad for the requests, and dance clubs played them (you might have to bring your vinyl as many didn't have copies!) and stores were interested in ordering when they knew there was still a market. I even once had the gas station attendant by my home tell me his stories about his years as an early Numan fan. I never found the negitivity that there appears to be in England. I stopped doing this after it looked like IRS was going to promote him stateside. In 1991 I shot a video feature called "The Last Mechanic". It was based on ideas from the first four albums. I never got the chance to finish the overdubs so...if I finish the project this winter I'll let people know. Q's for Gary Numan: I was wondering if Gary wouldn't mind chatting about his studio technique. I'm interested in finding out how he mixes his vocal tracks (ie. does he use one reverb on the whole mix or one on the vox tracks and another for the music, etc.). I'm also interested in finding out what microphones he likes for studio and/or tour. -Thanx K. ps. thank you Derek for all you are doing, cheers! ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 15 Sep 1995 10:15:53 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: Berserker mastering differences To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi, As, reported in # 157 I have noticed that the 'Berserker' track on Babylon 1 sounds different to my "Berserker" CD so I checked it out last night along with my other CDs with versions of this song on it ("Isolate" and "Here I Am"). It is amazing how mastering varies from disc to disc. The Babylon version is sharp but perhaps lacking in low range. The "Isolate" version is a bit muddy. The "Berserker" CD seems to lack the full high end of Babylon. The "Here I Am" version (single edit versus extended mix) is full and clear, has a great punch to it. Something else also bothered me about the Babylon mix so I compared a brief section of the intrumental intro. It appears that some of the versions have the channels switched. The clearest indicator is the wailing guitar at about 20 secs into the extended version. It comes predominantly from one channel: Berserker CD - left Isolate CD - left Here I Am CD - right Babylon CD - right I didn't get a chance to try out my UK cassette or tape of the vinyl to see which was the original but it certainly is a curious phenomenon. The switch is evident throughout I think because the programmed bass(?) alternates channels with each note. One thing I also noticed is the inferiority of the "Isolate" mastering. Try Listen to the right channel only on the track and it sounds awful compared to the other versions. I suppose it's another question for Gary. I may have to cut down the number as there has been a big influx since the first answer session was posted. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. If so, can Derek or anyone let me know how I can get reprints of the back issues...I can offer to pay mailing costs and copying costs if need be. Let me know please. Also, I'm looking forward to hearing the new releases (I have yet to hear Sacrifice, and I hear its not to be missed- what Numan recording is?). Just a note- I play keyboards, and every time I go to a music store that has Keyboards with built in sequencers I program Cars into it and lable it as a demo, so whenever some unsuspecting customer comes in and plays the "demo" they get Cars. Its cool to be halfway across the store and hear Cars start playing! Sometimes I'll try to record it as close to the original as possible - meaning same tempo and type of instrumentation - but most often I will record it as a house ortechno/rave version similar to the Sprint '93 version. I love the Multivalve version...it is a great reworking of the original concept...amazing! I am still looking for the Sharpe + Numan record that Love Like A Ghost came from. I had the 12" picture disc (until desperate times forced me to sell it :( ) and have yet to see a copy of the LP it originated from. Any suggestions? I have no idea why this is so -- hey, language is a virus from outer space, right? -- but it certainly predates Mr Webb. As was said, it was used by Smash Hits in the 79-81 period when Gary Numan was at his most famous (I have many happy memories of reading Smash Hits while listening to the latest 12" single from Gazza played on my ancient record player), and it's stuck. This was the magazine which in 1980 published the letter I reproduce below from memory, in its entirety. "Dear Smash Hits. "I've seen all of Gary Numan's important little places. Now, it would be too cumbersome to do a full poll about these things so rather than collate positive votes I am willing to collate any negative votes which I assume would be far fewer in number. So if you disagree with any of the following statements that I'd like to send to Gary as being representative of the Digest subscriber's perspective, please email me. 1. We strongly recommend the extended mixes of 'The Fury' for any future CD rerelease. 2. We definitely want you to continue releasing extended mixes CDs of your albums. 3. And yet - Babylon 3 >includes the original version of Shame - which is an IRS track. >What is going on? It is odd. Perhaps a Fan Club-only release is OK as it is not available to the general public. Or, the extra movie sample intro is what Gary has added to technically make it an original rendition although I think he'd be treading on very thin legal ground. Babylon 5 should give us answers as it is all IRS material and should be appearing very soon if the Fan Club are keeping to their one very three week schedule. I wonder if Gary has mixes of the IRS material that are different from the releases? If the rumour is true that it was outside pressure that pushed "Outland" in towards a dance-funk style perhaps there is a mix which is how Gary wanted it to sound initally. Another special Fan Club release perhaps? Yet another question for Gary. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. "Gary". I have a cousin in the UK named Gary and we always called him "Gazzer" when we were growing up. Imp - you've got my blessing on the t-shirt idea and I'm gonna back right the heck out of the picture. I don't have the time to organize anything on quite this scale and, as you pointed out, your shirt is likely going to be of higher quality due to the printing process (although my Fury t-shirt is still pretty damned good in the quality department). Allow me also to cast a vote for using the straight Tubeway Army stylized-face logo, but with a twist (let's hear from others on this to see what they think). Since this is going to wind up looking just like the NUMA record label logo, let's go all the way and make it ORANGE-ON-BLACK instead of white-on-black. It would add a tad of color to what is going to wind up being a relatively simple design, and the colors go well together. Oh, and may as well save me the price of an e-stamp and consider me also "signed up" to buy one of these (in size XL). :-) Gary's responses - like everyone else here, I am EXTREMELY impressed. I've got more questions to ask now! :-) Thanks BIG TIME both to Gary himself and to Derek Langsford for turning this into a reality. //----------------------------------------------------------------- // lindstrj@cadvision.com aka Joey Lindstrom // If you're mindless, please take mine // Numanoids On Tour '96 - Email me for details ------------------------------ Date: Sat, 16 Sep 1995 12:45:40 -0500 From: blast@edge.net (blast! magazine) Subject: past digests... And now for the introductions. Born March 8, 1972. Same month, same day as Gary himself :) Hopefully, I won't let my birthday pass by again without realising it, in view of this bit of information. I live in Akureyri, Iceland, son of an Icelandic father and Belgian mother - which made me an alien - sort of. Local xenophobia and all... I mention this because that is, I think, the reason why Numan's music appeals to me. My first contact with Gary's music was when I bought in '93 or '94 Robert Palmer's Addictions I or II- don't remember which one at the moment. I dream of wires appealed to me so much that I _had_ to try more of his music. So I contacted the CD companies on the net and got myself the Best of 79-83 (& White Noise too - although I couldn't appreciate that one at first). I now possess 21 CD's (12 titles) - the best of, then the four-by-two rereleases of the Beggar's Banquet days, extended Machine + soul (9-track, unfortunately), M+soul 2, White Noise, DC, Dark Light, Sacrifice, Isolate, Document series presents (A slight mistake) and the Other Side of Gary Numan. I like virtually all his music and I like to see him experiment and evolve. I think he can make average records as much as he damn well pleases - it's always wonderful to follow his tracks. Gary is my favorite artist, though I also like very much Sting/Police, Robert Palmer (an experimenter, much like Numan, though quite different - does that make any sense?), Prefab Sprout. After that, the list goes on... my tastes are varied - classical, Vangelis, Eric Serra (particularly The Big Blue), Jean Michel Jarre, rap (De La Soul & Cypress Hill), Peter Gabriel, Deep Forest, Chris Rea, Pet Shop Boys... enough. I'm still a student at the University of Akureyri (http://www.unak.is :)), and my main interest lies in computers - using, programming and drawing. My literary tastes incline towards classical and Sci-Fi, notably Dan Simmons and Stephen King in the latter. I owe to Dan Simmons my interest in the poetry of Auden and John Keats. Philosophy and ethics are also very interesting to me, and that's probably why I'm an atheist. Well, brevity is the soul of wit. I won't make this any longer.... logging off -Laurent F.
