To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Philip Jacobson from Sioux Falls, SD asks this question of Gary-- In one of your recent responses to a question, you mentioned you have a cat. My grandmother has always maintained people who have cats are a notch above everyone else. Anyway, I've decided I would like to name my next cat after your current one, so could you give me the name and perhaps a bit of his/her history? I would also like to thankyou for hanging in all these years -- it has meant so much to so many of us. And pet your kitty for me too.:) ------------------------------ Date: 20 Sep 95 12:48:00 +0100 From: Sean.Francis@psemail.ps.net Subject: Asylum 3 To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Hi all. I just had a friend return from Japan and can bring you some Numan trivia from the Far East. "Asylum 3" is still generally available new, as are Asylum 1 and 2. There was a Numan section in all the record stores visited. Around 8 in total, and some of those were not that big. The 8 visited were in Niigata and Tokyo itself. The Japanese "Outland" CD has yellow art work. Same design as the blue artwork on the UK CD. The Japanese release of "Metal Rhythm" appears to be the same as the US "New Anger". Both CDs carry quite large booklets with all the lyrics in Kangi and English. "Sacrifice" was everywhere as was the last single "Absolution". All the copies seen were UK imports. Moral : Gary still has a good following in Japan. Later, Sean. ------------------------------------ email :- sean.francis@psemail.ps.net ------------------------------------ ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Sep 1995 11:55:09 -0800 From: dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu (Derek Langsford) Subject: back issues and latest live album To: numan@cs.uwp.edu In #158 blast@edge.net (blast! magazine) asked >hey there...i lost access to the net awhile back (well, nov. 94 to be >exact) and i've missed out on the digest since then...well, until i >regained by ability to go on-line (which started with digest #156)...how >can i get back issues of the digest...was there a new live recording since >"Dream Corrosion"?...i'm so out of it lately... Back issues are available via anonymous ftp from two sites: cs.uwp.edu (good luck getting on - very busy) or mirrors.aol.com (much easier to get to) Go to the pub/music/lists/numan/digest directory and all the back issues are there for you to download via ftp. Gary released a new double CD/Cassette live album in June 1995 titled "Dark Light". It was the concert he gave at the London Labatt's Apollo on Nov 5th 1994 as opposed to the 12th which is what the insert says. Includes only 5 songs played on the "Dream Corrosion" set and sounds a lot clearer. Most view it to be Gary's best live album since "White Noise" and maybe even Living Ornaments. Contians a lot of material from "Tubeway Army", "Replicas", "Telekon" and "Sacrifice". I highly recommend it as I think most fans would. Again it's UK Only NUMACD 1012. Email me if you'd like my review. Derek -------------------------------------------------------------------------- Derek H. Langsford dlangs@sunstroke.sdsu.edu Dept. of Biology Tel. It sounded like they are a part of the CD-ROM that he and Mark M is putting together. He is quoted as saying something like "Picture a pissed off Monkees" when describing the band. I'm still looking for a winner in the "Unscamble the Secret Message" contest from my post last week. I'm not particularly fond of extended remixes, so if just one version of an album is going to be pressed, I'd say give me the concise, edited version. Of course, I'd like both versions to be available. My name is Darlene Copeland and I am a student at Agnes Scott College in Decatur, GA. I thought that the Gary Numan "magazine" would be of interest to myself and my boyfriend. I have been listening to Gary Numan for only a short while (as a fan). I am interested in many other kinds of music ranging from The Exploited to Dead Can Dance to David Bowie to Beethoven. I don't play any instruments at the moment so I would not be of aid to any potential bands. Just finishing my Masters in Ergonomics and living off the government. I've been a fan since about 1987-8 (whenever Strange Charm and Exhibition came out), but have only been able to go to the concerts in the last four/five years (Outland was the first, @Hammersmith Odeon). Life hasn't been the same since. Last year went to Birmingham, Guilford and Milton Keynes on the Sacrifice tour. I thought it was pretty cool to hear Stormtrooper in Drag live for the first time. Other than Gary, I listen to Chili Peppers, Fugazi, Primus, Depeche Mode, New Order, Blur (sorry), Metallica (sorry again) etc. etc. I play bass guitar in a couple of bands - one crap covers band (but we have fun), and one more serious called 'Charlie King's Big Fight'. Charlie writes all her own stuff and we've done some recording (CD single already out - limited edition natch, same as 'Thats too bad / Bombers'!). More recording soon, except we've lost our guitarist, careless I know, but he's gone to live in thailand to be with his girlfriend - women. who needs them. Any how, thats it for now, glad to be part of the group. I hope we can have a laugh...... cheers Phil. (Oh yeah, I've also got a PPL, if you're interested.) ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 20 Sep 95 23:30:59 From: Marvin TPA Subject: New Addition To The Numan Mailing List To: numan@cs.uwp.edu Gulp! I'm new to this group, and apparently, I have to introduce myself... I've been a Numan fan ever since the Tubeway Army days. So it's no surprise that I'm just (JUST, mind you!) over 30, but with a mental age of about 20 (phew!). I never learnt to play an instrument unfortunately (but I can load most types of CD-player), but I'm trying to get lessons for my oldest daughter - then she can teach me. Oh, and I live in Yorkshire, England. I've always been interested in music, and my tastes range from indie to pop, and from rock to dance (but I don't like jungle, rap, hip-hop, etc). Artists in my collection include Therapy?, Kate Bush, Pete Murphy, Rush, Curve, Killing Joke, Annie Lennox (sheesh!?), Magazine, Fields Of The Nephilim, and so on. Oh, yes - I've got loads of Numan stuff as well (duh!). Since it's confession-time, YES - I am also a member of the UK fan club, but only since 1992. There are also a few questions I would like to pose at this point: - Will the Babylon CD's being released by the fan club cover all remixes of the Numa back-catalogue? These were meant to be the definitive collection of all the old stuff, as far as I was aware. For example, some of the mixes from the Berserker era already appear to have been skipped. The next release (due any day) is Babylon 4, but will it include all mixes of "I Can't Stop" not previously released on CD? (Yes, another confession - I'm a completist, a train spotter, an anorak!!!). - Does anyone out there know if it is possible to get any or all of DRAMATIS's material on CD? (They were Gary's early backing band). They had one album and several singles, which would all sit together nicely one CD, I suspect (including remixes, of course!). They were on the Rocket label, not Numa, but I still wonder if it's worth putting the idea to the "Numan empire" about re-issuing the old Dramatis stuff. It was pretty typical early 80's synth; but hey, it's what I grew up(?) on. [Derek, could you possibly suggest this idea to Gary?]. - Finally (phew!), on a different tack, is Gazza himself on the 'net? I gather that he has recently started dabbling in PC's for his own artwork etc, and so I wondered if he had personally ventured into cyberspace. [Hi there, Gary, if you're reading this!!!]. That's it for now! If anyone has any comments or answers, please get in touch! Bye for now ... --------------------------------------------------------- Paul B. Using Netscape, the first 13 files (in alphabetical, NOT chronological order) look like... > >Up to higher level directory > 1.10.Z > 1.100 > 1.101 > 1.102 > 1.103 > 1.104 > 1.105 > 1.106 > 1.107 > 1.108 > 1.109 > 1.11.Z > 1.110 > The first entry is Volume 1, issue #10. The '.Z' extension means it's Unix compressed - you'll need a program like GZIP.EXE (for Windows) to convert it to text. Other platforms will use something else... The next entries are issues #100-109, followed by #11 (compressed), and #110... According to Derek, issue #1 is NOT on the archive, was only a test or something. Note that 'numan.gary' directory has these directories beneath it: discog/ lyrics mail.list pictures press/ reviews Enjoy! BAY AREA BANDS Vol. 3, #12 devoted the entire issue to Gary with an exclusive interview and discography. I have not read this zine, but F5 says that the 10 pages are filled with info on Gary's favorite bands, being famous at agw 21, and his views on religion. I will post my thoughts as soon as I read a copy. Should you wish to check it out yourself contact: BAY AREA BANDS c/o Steve Kelly, 1931 California St. #3, Mountain View, CA 94041. While we are on the subject of zines...do any of you know of any paper or electric Numan zines? I would be interested trading a copy of my music zine SCREED for a copy. Do any of you publish any zines? Let's trade! stay in orbit! Terry Burke ------------------------------ End of Gary Numan Digest ******************************
